My daughter asked me if she could get her hair highlighted before Senior photos. Anaala was recommended by a friend, Unfortunately, it was a complete waste of $360. I could barely tell that anything had been done to her hair. I called the salon and spoke with a receptionist who said she would forward my concerns to the owner, Nicole. Nicole called me pretending that she had no idea what I had called about in the first place. Insulting. Her "Senior" stylist was only charging the "going" rate. I've had some bad haircuts in the last year. My dear stylist left my usual salon during the pandemic and it's been very difficult to find someone else I like. So I decided to try Anaala on Atwood and it's my new favorite salon for hair! Nina really listened to me and gave a full consult before starting in. She was really nice and I am now only going to her. She helped me fix the shape of my hair, and gave an excellent scalp massage. I've booked another appointment with her two months from now. I like having Anaala in the neighborhood, it's close to my home and work so it's super convenient to drop in for a facial wax when I end up with some free time in my schedule. I usually have good luck getting in with a couple of hour's notice or even as a walk-in, which is nice. It's a small space and doesn't feel like a luxury salon, which makes their high prices for many services a little harder to swallow. Their wax prices are pretty comparable to other salons, though, which is why I go here. I always find parking a pain, so when the weather is nice it's easier just to walk over if you can. Since I tend to make last minute appointments, I take whichever technician is available. With one exception my experiences have been good and even that wasn't a disaster, it just wasn't what I'd said I wanted. Other than that I've been happy with the service at this location. read more

When I moved here from Chicago I was having a hard time finding a stylist that was as well trained and knowledgeable as I had in the city. I tried many stylists at many salons - and was thrilled to finally find Kayla at Ananda Salon @ Hilldale. She is ridiculously easy to talk to, professional, and has the up to date knowledge and skill that I was looking for. It is not cheap - but is IS REASONABLE. You know those crazy people who decide they want a haircut and choose to have it because they have an opening THAT SAME DAY.....and then end up unhappy? *Raises hand* I have a tendency to have spontaneous hair cut decisions and end up being disappointed. My usual salon wasn't open this day, so I chose Anaala. I'm giving this 3 stars because of the following: LOCATION: Really close to my house, which is always a plus. There's a small parking lot for the tiny plaza it's in, but it's there if you don't miss it twice driving in traffic. STAFF: Very personably and friendly. They knew it was my birthday that day and they were sweet enough to greet me and give me a small little gift. Very unexpected, very impressive. Bonnie was my stylist and she kept me relaxed and we could've talked for hours. Unfortunately, I wasn't as happy with my results as I thought I was. I'd asked for a layered shoulder-length cut as a new start for my 30th birthday. The whole process was fine and I was happy at the end of my appointment. My hair looked great! Went out to dinner, loved the pictures of my hair, etc. But when it came to me styling my own hair at home, I noticed that my layers weren't blended in well. It was pretty much two layers--I could grab the bottom layer and hold it back in a ponytail and the top layer would look like I had a bob. I thought it was just me, that I sucked at doing my own hair, but isn't the point of having your hair done the way you want it is to that you can style it yourself on a daily basis? I even showed her pictures and it was close, but no cigar. I let it go. I didn't come back per their policy to have it fixed. I was more disappointed in myself that I didn't wait for my usual stylist to be available. I'm not telling anyone not to go to this place--they seem really great. I would just warn you to make sure you reaaaaaally love the end result and you're able to work with it in a daily basis and it's not just masked with how it was styled professionally. read more

I love Aveda salons, so when I moved to Madison, I sought out one and ended up making Anaala my salon of choice. Easy appointment making online or by phone. Different levels of stylists at different prices for a haircut (typically for most Aveda salons). Stylists are usually punctual with appointment times. My old salon did a bit more in terms of services that accompanied a haircut (head massage, hand massage), but Anaala definitely meets the expectations of a great Aveda salon. read more

Yes, I'm a guy and yes I get my haircut at a salon. While not cheap, Ananda does a great job at 'ok' prices. The Aveda products help and they give a killer head massage before you get a cut. They also tend to have beautiful women working there so that helps take the sting out of going to a salon for a haircut... Overall - recommended. They also have a 'spa' there with massages but the hours for the massages seem 'hit or miss'. Only 4 stars because you get what you pay for at Ananda. read more

I'm not sure where my original review went. But, it's now almost past two months later and the damage done to my hair by one of their "butchers" has still not mended. I think another warning is worth repeating. Do NOT use this place for a men's cut. Or, if you do, pay the deep fee and have someone good do it...As I said, about 2.5 months ago, I went in for what I hoped would be a simple trim. I was assigned someone named KiKi. It might have been "Creepy" or "Kinky." All I know is, I was hoping to grow my hair longer. Stylist reviewed pictures. Stylist said she understood, "When in doubt, leave it long." So, I was surprised when I looked and had hair shorter than I had seen it on my head since I was in 6th grade. "Creepy," knowing she blew it, actually said, "You know, in order to get where you wanted to go, I had to take lots off." What am I? A bush?...It was not until I got home that I discovered the back was totally uneven. By now, I questioned if "Creep-Creep" had some kind of hearing disability or had, like, zero training...Next day, I went back very angry. One of the stylists was able to, sort of, repair. She did not want to push her associate under the bus. I get it. But, she did say, "Yes, I am not sure what she (Kracky) was thinking." ... Now, I am left with some kind if Woody Woodpecker doo. I have decided it is worth it to drive to Milwaukee and visit a salon who hires only people who know what they are doing, that is in the next three months when my hair is back to any kind of normal.... If this Kinky is still there, def. do not ask for her or settle for her. If she has been fired, well, I am sorry. But, you need more training...Even if they would have me back, I doubt very highly I would visit here. read more

If I could've put ZERO stars, I would have. I just passed the mirror in the living room and caught a glimpse of myself, and more importantly, my hair. it's HORRIBLE. All I asked her to do was just follow the same line of the cut that I had, and just clean up the sides and take out the weight around the crown. The sides of my head look like they were cut with a dull steak knife! At one point she handed me my glasses and said, "See this part? It'll probably calm down in a few days." W T F?????? Then towards the end, she goes, "oooh!!! it got all puffy from me running my hands through it! Let me wet it down." She did, then she handed me my glasses and said, "Okay! What do you want to do now?". "Um, aren't YOU supposed to tell me that?" "Well, there isn't a guy that I know who doesn't have a specific "thing" that they do to their hair. Um... do you want some product?" Starting to seethe.... through gritted teeth, "Yeah. That would be nice... and do you think you could maybe dry it seeing as how it's 13 degrees outside?" What really pisses me off is that I SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR A SENIOR STYLIST. When I was told that they didn't work on weekends, I was assured that I would have someone who was "mid range". This b*&%# was TWENTY years old and had been cutting hair for a year. THAT's "Mid Range"??? Jeebus. I can't even look at myself in the mirror. My recommendation to anyone is: DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. My recommendation to Ananda is: Don't lie to customers. I would've been fine if you had said that there were only beginner stylists available. I would've simply scheduled for a day when a more experienced stylist could cut my hair. also, get a comfortable place for customers to sit while they're waiting, and get a curtain for the window. I don't have much good to say about my experience with the Anaala Salon on Atwood. To begin with, they have only two chairs in the waiting area. The entire time I was there, there were more than two people waiting, so some people had to stand. The haircut itself is....not good. I had brought in a picture, and it's nothing like it--really a completely different cut. Where I wanted it to go down, it goes up. Where I wanted it to go up, it goes down. It's inches longer than I had asked for--it really wound up being much more of a trim. Usually when my hair looks like it does now, I'd go in for a haircut, except I just left the salon. (sigh) Weirdly, nearly everyone left with a wet head. They don't seem to blow dry after a standard haircut. After all of that, the customer service when I was trying to check out was horrible. read more

Horrible. It's been almost a month since I got my haircut there and I'm still wearing my hair up to hide the awful cut and color. At Anaala they engage in "double booking" which means while you're waiting for your color your stylist will take another client and do their haircut. I think that's pretty tack when you're paying over $100 for your appointment. Sure, I'll just sit here in the foils while you do someone else's hair for forty-five minutes....Not to mention the place is cramped and the sitting arrangement is awkward. Skip it! Unless you like paying a lot of money to wear ponytails for weeks on end. So disappointing. read more

Truly one of the most awful massage experiences of my life (and I'm a massage therapist - it was worse than massage school). My major gripes: 1) Price was disparate for service offered; the massage itself was basic Swedish technique. No deep tissue or other slightly more "advanced" therapeutic techniques (as promised). 2) Noise level was unacceptable. For all but ten minutes of my hour, there were two chatty people right outside. The therapist should have at least stuck her head out the door. 3) Inappropriate draping techniques. The massage therapist, obviously self-taught, had zero knowledge of the proper (and legal, according to state statutory provisions) to expose parts of the body for work without making a client uncomfortable or breaching basic decorum. In a word: never. As in, never go here. Ever. read more

Anna at the Atwood location is a miracle worker! She's the nicest hairstylist around, and she always makes a point to remember you. My brother also sees her and she remembers we're related. We have a great experience every time we go in. Not only is Anna a wonder person and truly kind, she's also a phenomenal hair stylist! I walked in with long, curly, frizzy unruly hair, and walked out with an inspirational, super short, undercut (much to the shock of the other women in the room!) The receptionists are always lovely and everyone in there is pleasant. Yes, it is pricey, but it is a salon. They never skip on the full package. read more

I paid $45 for a manicure and it was not good. Nice employees, but it was definitely not worth the money.

'Manicures": I went here with 5 others including my mom and sister the day before my wedding to all get manicures. All they did was file the edges and paint on polish, and most (not all of us) got hand massages. They didn't take care of cuticles or buff the nails at all... The polish that they put on looked like something my 5 year old neighbor girl could do, it was hanging off of the ends (so the polish could peel right off) and the polish didn't go all the way to the cuticle or sides of the nails. It looked horrible on me and the other girls that didn't have long enough nails to do a 'french'. The 2 girls that were deemed to have long enough nails for a 'french' looked okay, although one of the manicurists had to call the other one over to paint the tips on for her. I did have them re-do a couple of my nails before I left but they were so ugly for my wedding, I had to remove the nail polish the night before my wedding and just go bare because I didn't have time to redo it (as did one of the bridesmaids). Very disappointing experience that a girl doesn't want to have the day before her wedding. advice for Anaala: put better descriptions of your services online and clearly state that out for your customer/s before the service starts as it might not have been what they were thinking/wanted. Everyone just seemed confused. Also, if a customer doesn't want to fill out a sheet with their personal information on it then they shouldn't have to, that should be a choice. advice for customers: go somewhere else, way too expensive for what we received (little file and slopped on polish), front desk didn't have a sign or pamplet available for us to look at in the lobby (they had to print more) so I couldn't read any descriptions to see what service was being performed on us. Heaven forbid I would try any of their other services... read more

Both of my visits to Anaala (Hilldale) have been good ones. The first was a cut, with Violet. It seems the head massage before the cut is part of the deal: I didn't know that: it felt GREAT. The reason I think she did a good job, is not that I got a spectacular new cut. Instead it was just this: she listened to my preferences, understood what I wanted and didn't want, and suggested some new things I hadn't thought of, but that fit well with what I wanted. I always have that horrible feeling when I walk out of a hairdressers of 'is that me in the mirror? Oh no, what have I done...", but this time, I was reconciled to it within hours. Two weeks later (which is my test of a good haircut), I was still happy with it. The second was a colouring and highlights, and I wish I remembered teh name of the stylist, because she did an even better job. My hair is quite thick, and even though I'd told them this when I made the appointment, she saw immediately when I came in that they hadn't made enough time for it. Unfortunately I didn't have as much time in my schedule as she said she'd need. But she somehow made it happen. She worked briskly and non-stop for 2 solid hours, and the result was just perfect. I'd told her that I wanted it natural-looking but blending into my last colour-job. She suggested 2 shades, and I couldn't quite imagine it working, but told her "OK I trust you" - and I'm glad I did! It looked much better than anything I would have chosen myself. The place is more expensive than 'regular' salons, but I think it's worth it. read more

I followed my stylist to Anaala from another salon -- upgrade! The Aveda products are awesome, but still second best to Emily. She always has super awesome ideas that are executed to perfection. I've had cuts ranging from classic to edgy and always walk out looking like a movie star. I finally stopped going to the Hilldale location because the customer service was atrocious. Atwood is much better, although they need to have a better waiting area (only 2 chairs shoved in the corner like an afterthought) and it would be helpful if the receptionist would ask to take people's coats (there is a coat rack, but it is behind you, so I didn't even notice it until my 3rd or 4th visit). I asked for highlights and my stylist (who I won't name but who told me she had a few previous careers and is currently in school for her next career so she seemed distracted and not very dedicated to the task at hand) told me I should consider some lowlights. I agreed with hesitation, just asked that they be subtle. Instead I got dark chunky streaks a la the 1990s. My layers were incredibly chunky and uneven. Some layers were several inches shorter than others and I only seemed to have them cut on one side of my head. They were cut bluntly, like harsh blocked edges. Awful. I chose Anaala initially because I wanted a more natural experience but not at the expense of a decent looking haircut! I will never go back and would encourage other potential clients to read the reviews first. Their low rating seems warranted and I wish I would have read it before I went :( read more

I live in Boston, but for the last few years have been waiting until I come home to visit my parents to get my hair cut and colored at Anaala at Hilldale. It's refreshing to walk into a Spa/Salon that has an East Coast hip feel with the friendliness (and prices!) only know in the Mid-West. Violet is my stylist. I can't say enough about her. She takes her time to truly understand what I want done (I have curly hair and I'm super particular) and I am always happy when I walk away from her chair. I want to like this place but can't. Everyone I've seen has been super nice, but the end product hasn't been great. I had a shellac manicure that chipped after three days. I've never had a shellac manicure chip - they always grow out first! My leg waxing was super quick and painless, but then I discovered big patches of missed hair. I've come to enjoy the Aveda salons and how they go about doing things, but the reason I go here is EMILY. I've been getting my haircut by Emily for two years and I will not let anyone else cut it. Every haircut is always met with enthusiastic approval from my wife and Emily goes out of her way to make me feel great. I DO NOT recommend the Anaala salon on Atwood. I went in for a simple cut and color. My hair was dyed dark brown. I left the salon with wet hair and when I got home to blowdry, I noticed a completely bleached white and singed spot of hair the size of a dime. It was about an inch away from my hairline above my forehead. I immediately went back to the salon to have it corrected, they fixed the color by re-dying the bleached section but my hair had singed off at an inch from my scalp in the section. They took no responsibility for it, saying they had no idea how it could of happened. I was insulted and stunned when the stylist suggested the possibility of a lit cigarette burning my hair on the way home. The salon is over priced for the services they provide. read more
