In December I had an appointment with Leslie to have my hair colored. I took a picture of my own hair from my previous month's appointment and the hair extensions that I have so she could color match, and she dyed my hair black instead. It took a month of back and forth emails with the owner Tabatha to convince her to let me come back to the salon to show her what my hair looks like and she agreed to fix it. Now, after the fix it appointment, my hair has three distinct colors starting from the top of my head down to the ends and it looks ridiculous. I expected them to be accommodating and agree to continue fixing my hair until it was the color that I asked for but I was treated like it was an inconvenience to do the right thing. Tabatha informed me that she expected me to pay to fix their mistake so I told them that I would not return. Alexis, the stylist, muttered "Perfect" under her breath as I walked away because she was happy that they got rid of the problem they created and now they don't have to continue working for free to do the right thing. I have been to see Amanda twice and she's knocked it out of the park both times! I have VERY thick and long hair and it's incredibly difficult for me to find a stylist who can not only work with it, but who can color it in a reasonable amount of time (in other salons I've had upwards of 7-hour appointments!). I am very picky about my hair and Amanda is the first stylist who I am 100% happy with. She takes the time to get it right and STILL does it faster than anyone I've ever been to, even dealing with the old color and coppery tones in my hair. She does have an apprentice working with her and she does do multiple clients at a time but this does not bother me AT ALL because she still somehow gives you her complete personal attention and makes sure you are 100% satisfied with your hair. It is not cheap but you get what you pay for, especially when you have long thick hair like mine! I would much rather be happy with my hair and pay a little more for someone who knows what they're doing, and Amanda does. PS - do your due diligence when you're looking for a new stylist - pick a stylist based on their portfolio and experience with what you want, don't just pick a salon. read more

Went in for nails and that might've been my mistake. Just wanted some simple gel French tips. They came out cloudy and patchy and the lines for the French were uneven and blurry. They're okay but they're definitely not worth 53 dollars for them to chip 30 minutes after the appointment. I won't go here again. Twice I've gone for a cut and twice they seriously botched my hair, requiring weeks of growth and "repair" haircuts from other salons to fix. When I went for a color, they quoted me one price, and when I went to pay they added another 30 or so bucks onto my bill. When I asked them why, they said "The cost we quoted you was just for the service. We add on the cost of the products at the end that we used to color your hair." What?? So when you go for a color, they apparently don't tell you the real price, and the price they do quote you "without" the product add-on is the same as other salons who don't charge "extra". And what salon anywhere else charges additional for the stuff they use to color your hair?? Seriously? Not another salon in Madison, I can tell you that, so now I take my business elsewhere. read more

I am writing this review because I am completely and utterly disappointed in the color service I received at this salon on 03/13/20. I wanted to make sure to write this and include pictures, before my hair has a chance to grow out. The first picture ( bottom, right) is the one I showed the stylist, as reference to what I wanted. This picture was shown at the time of my color consultation. Not once was I told that this color could not be achieved on my hair. The rest of the pictures are the outcome of my color service. The next picture (bottom, left) shows that my hair goes from super dark/almost black to light brownish/blonde at the tips. It is not blended at all and looks nothing like what I asked for. The final picture (top) shows that my roots/out growth went untouched. All my greys are still exposed and were never colored. I did mention at the consultation that my greys seem stubborn and grow back quickly, usually within a few weeks (typically about 3),but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't have been dyed with the rest of my hair. I have never had a stylist leave my outgrowth untouched. I thought that to dye them was a give-in. It looks like nothing was done to my hair, except I was given blonde tips now. I would rather a salon be upfront and communicate honestly with me. For example say " I cannot complete this look on you," and either direct me to another salon or a stylist that has experience with this color. Even if that means losing business or rescheduling the appointment for a later date. It is not okay for salons to take on jobs they cannot execute and then charge such exorbitant prices for a job so poorly done. The salon was advertising a promotion that offered 50% off a color service for first time customers. I happened to be a candidate for this offer. When I was being checked out they did not automatically discount me I had to ask " is that the total with the promotion?" Maybe that was a small unintentional mistake, but since I was already irked I added it to the list of another reason this business lacks integrity. I will say that the cut turned out well and the stylist was nice enough. But I don't go to salons for nice small talk. I go there for quality service and getting what I paid for. $130 ( that's with the discount) is a lot for a cut and a color that's not even close to what you asked for. Please don't take on job's that cannot be completed correctly. It's not fair and it's not right. read more

Julia Grace Salon is conveniently located on the west side of Madison near West Towne Mall. I've been going for nearly a year now and honestly couldn't be happier. I originally started going to Julia Grace because I met the Owner, Tabatha, at various community and business events around town. Her personable disposition and expertise is clearly shared with her fantastic and talented staff. The Salon is urban-chic while simultaneously being cozy and inviting. It always feels like I've been on a mini getaway after I leave. Not only is the Salon and Owner fantastic, so are the talented Stylists. With my crazy schedule, I'm terrible at booking ahead and have had the pleasure of working with a few stylists who could accommodate my last-minute requests. My usual stylist, Kirstin, is extremely talented, highly experienced and is currently on Maternity leave. She had a girl! Since she's been on leave, I've worked with the equally experienced stylist, Amanda, and just today, the up and coming Claire. I simply adore Claire. Despite being fairly new, her talent is undeniable and her personality is sweet and endearing. She is wise beyond her years and was very thoughtful about my color requests and delivered a color I'm thrilled with. I am sadly no longer a young and natural blonde, however, when ever I leave Julia Grace Salon I feel like I've shed years off my life with a new cut, style and color. Voila! Life is good! They had a group of girls for hair and makeup come to my hotel so my bridesmaids and I could sleep in and have breakfast and mimosas while getting ready. :) Everyone's hair looked INCREDIBLE and the makeup stayed in place all day and night. They were prompt, friendly without being overbearing, and competent, so I've been back for a couple of haircuts since then. I used to live in Madison and now I live in New York but still fly back to Madison every month and I feel like I rarely have time for highlights in New York so sometimes I keep on going back to Amanda whenever I am around. She is the best colorist for long blonde hair and knows how to take "gold" out. Her services are by no means cheap - $175 last time with taxes and tip (New York prices are lower), but she is really good. Amanda makes sure to go to annual conferences dedicated to hair styling and coloring and she is on top of all new trends including non-chemical hair extensions. I strongly recommend her. read more

Every time I have an appointment she listens to what I'm thinking and then is able to suggest what would make the cut I want work for my face shape. I always leave feeling like a million bucks. I have a pretty fast paced lifestyle and it was refreshing not to have 3 hours at the salon to get partial highlights and a nice haircut (I was in and out in an hour and a half). She did a fantastic job with my bangs and my boyfriend remarked that he thought it was the best highlight job he had seen on me yet due to how she balanced the color with lowlights. In the fine print it said that only new customers could participate. I was a customer as of 6 days. I called and asked if they could accommodate me so I could go again and they would not.
