Be caution if you choose Anacapa Oral Surgery (Camarillo and Oxnard) Long story to be short: they will overcharge you a lot by playing all kinds of tricks! Detail of my experience: Early this year, I needed to do oral surgery and my dentist recommended Anacapa Oral Surgery which is in my insurance network. Dr. Marwood Stout at Anacapa Oral Surgery first did a consultation session. I was asked to pre-pay $280 and was told that they would adjust after going through the insurance. Then in my insurance account, I found that the "submitted fee" they claimed was $250 (note, it was not $280), and the accepted fee was $138. My insurance paid in full, so my cost for this service is 0. But Anacapa Oral Surgery never refunded any amount to me. The worst thing happened next: for the oral surgery, they asked me to pre-pay $3450, and they asked me to sign a package, and again, they said they would do adjustments after insurance payments. Then at the end, the submitted fee they claimed was $1939 (though I paid $3450) and this time my insurance paid $894.5, and it shows that my cost is $944.5. After this, they only refunded $894.5 and refused to refund the rest of the balance. Let me do some simple math here: my cost should be 944.5, but I paid 3450 and only got 894.5 as a refund. So I overpaid $2555.5! For consultation and surgery together, they overcharged $2835.5! I talked with Anacapa Oral Surgery, and they just gave all kinds of excuses for not paying back. They basically were saying "I understand insurance can be confusing and it might be in our office's best interest just to save our patients money and use the package fee without involving insurance at all; but our goal is to give top notch service and a successful outcome to our patients at a lower reasonable price and get them whatever payment the insurance makes back in their pocket". Sounds like they tried to save money for me... funny?!! As one more step, I called my dental insurance (Delta), and the representative clearly stated that at an in-network provider, Anacapa Oral Surgery was wrong, and then a case was created by Delta to do further investigations. Guess what? Anacapa Oral Surgery then told Delta that they did not claim many services that they did to me, including IV sedation, bone/gum tissue econtouring, temporary healing components, CT scans, an extraction, bone grafting, and collagen barrier placement.... What can I say now? Why did they not claim them? Did they really do these services without me or insurance knowing? Currently, Delta asked them to submit these claims so it is still unclear to me what will end up with. I am sharing this story here, and hopefully if someone thinks this is helpful. read more

I had a difficult oral surgery: removal of several buccal tori in December 2023. Dr. Stout and his team did a great job. Their communication was clear. I particularly appreciated their careful and detailed instructions. The aftermath of the surgery was painful, as was unavoidable; but Dr. Stout's team did a great job of anticipating that issue, telling me about it, and providing the needed pain abatement medications up front. While I would prefer not to have such a surgery, they did a great job, and I was very pleased and grateful. read more

My entire situation was handled in one visit. Julie, on the other hand, is the brain of the operation. I have never met a nicer and more competent dental employee. This woman answered all of my ridiculous/nervous questions and did it in a manner that showed that she really does care. She basically held my hand thru all of it, and it's all very unfamiliar to me. She hooked me up with all the take home supplies and meds. They worked me in as an emergency without having a proper appointment and handled it. I've been home maybe 2 hours and Julie has already called to check in on me. I highly recommend that you fill your prescription at their office to avoid the pharmacy chaos. Due to a bike accident I needed the care of an oral surgeon on a Saturday in June during COVID-19...that felt almost as daunting as the injuries that I had suffered, and they were significant. Stitches in my upper and lower lip, teeth knocked out of position, a hole in my top lip, etc. I was incredibly fortunate that my on-call dentist called Dr. Stout. He met me at the office and treated me like I was part of his family. Every doctor and dentist that I've seen since has marveled at how well he had patched me up and how well I was healing. I was pleased myself, but to hear other professionals give such high praise really drove home how truly fortunate I had been. This place was awesome. It's been a little over a month since I've had my wisdom teeth pulled and I couldn't be happier. I had my consult in Oxnard and my surgery done at the Camarillo office. Everyone from front office, tx team, billing, CT scan lady :0), everyone, was just awesome! Dr. Stout and his team are wonderful!! I was so scared of the general anesthesia and they were reassuring, very kind and very understanding. I am never afraid of any dental or medical procedure, yet, this time I was. I proceeded forward and had the procedure done. I woke up, alive!! Just as promised!! Seriously! Now, two weeks later, after an extraction, bone graft and a tissue graft. NO pain. None. I had a bit of swelling, some bruising, but no pain at all. Amazing! When taking an x-ray to look at my wisdom teeth, my family dentist found an odontogenic keratocyst on my lower jaw. My mom looked high and low for a good oral surgeon and after concluding her research, she ended up taking me to Dr. Stout. Best decision ever! Over the span of 5 years, I've gone to him for 4 surgeries, starting with removing my wisdom teeth and cyst, and now all the way to restorative bone grafting and implants. Everyone knows he's a pro with wisdom teeth, but, I'm here to tell you that he absolutely nails it in all other aspects as well. OKC are aggressive with a high chance of reoccurring and he did an outstanding job of getting rid of it. On top of that, he has the cutest, sweetest, office staff!! They've all been amazing and helpful and made the paperwork side of things as easy as possible. My dentist referred me here for an emergency surgical extraction of a crown/tooth that had broken off below the gum line. It had become infected and was very painful, the right side of my jaw was visibly swollen. My dental ppo covered half of the almost $2,000 procedure, and I was prepared to pay an additional $500 up front, with the balance paid in a few days when I got paid. I was told that I'd need to be anesthetized as the procedure was traumatic and would require "chiseling." I was refused treatment until I paid in full. I then had a 3 way conversation with them and my provider and was told they would confer with the Dr. and his team(?) and they would get right back to me. A week later I hadn't heard anything, so I called them and was told they wouldn't accommodate me. Upset doesn't cover it, I was stunned. I then called my dentist back (the wonderful Camarillo Smiles!) and asked for another referral. I was sent to a practice that saw me that day and performed the procedure with kindness, compassion and outstanding senses of humor. It took literally 5 minutes, local anesthesia only, completely painless and "trauma" free. The whole thing was 4 hundred dollars and change. They completed the procedure before I was aware they had begun! The surgeon gave me a card with his personal number, and told me to call him over Memorial Day weekend at any time of the day or night with any issues or undue pain, and he would be available. I showed my gratitude by treating the entire office to lunch. I'll be needing a couple of implants in the near future. Guess where I'll be going? read more

Once I stepped foot into Dr. Stout's office I felt extremely well informed, comfortable and in good hands. The staff was so helpful and basically held my hand throughout the process with explaining what would happen and a plan not only with the financial part but what to look forward to surgery day. The day of surgery it went a lot quicker than I expected and painless! I was fortunate to have a painless recovery and a week later his office called to see how I was doing!! I am extremely happy with my beautiful dental implants and this isn't even the final set!!! Dr. Stout has the best bedside manner of any surgeon I have ever had the experience of utilizing and I highly recommend him for any procedure you may need as he is a true perfectionist and will work hard to ensure you are happy with the results. Dr Stout's bedside manner needs improvement. He tried to charge me $700 for general anesthesia to pull a tooth and do a bone graft when the normal procedure is to numb the area with a shot. I had always gone to Dr. Wilgus, however Dr. Stout was a network provider for my insurance. It turned out I did not save any money going to him. I had the tooth puled and the bone graft done by Dr. Stout. BIG MISTAKE!!! I had the procedure done on February 2017, I was overcharged and made to pay for this service even though I had verified with my insurance how much this should cost. Their office took months to submit the bill to the insurance. I actually had to call my insurance company and ask them to call their office and make them submit the bill. Once the bill was submitted it turned out they owed me a refund. This was in July of 2017. Their office manager, Marie told me I would be mailed a refund by the end of the month. Guess what? no refund!! I called again periodically and was told the same thing. Finally today, November 17, 2017, I was told Marie is out of the office with a family emergency and as soon as she comes back they will give her my message. I have never written a bad review about anyone, however, I really think this is over the top and patients should know about this. Had to get my wisdom teeth out. I went and everything seemed okay, until I woke up from the procedure. Luckily he was about done when I woke up. He never called that day to make sure if I was okay or the next day. I was also in pain the very next day, the pain meds that he prescribed didn't work. When I called the office they kept on saying that the pain I felt was normal. I told them that I was in so much pain that I was crying. They still didn't want to give me different meds or have me come in. Finally after giving the lady over the phone a few choice words she made me an appointment for a Friday. That is a week from when I had the procedure done. I was so pissed off I hung up on her. They don't want to accomodate you but they sure want their money right away. When my insurance was taking a long time to pay they kept on sending me bills. I ignored them and they called me as well to say that I at least need to pay more. I was like I dont f-ing think so. This post is for the front office staff who are 3 of the most incompetent, snotty girls I've ever had to deal with. Called 3 weeks ago to get my daughter in for a wisdom tooth extraction and specifically told them that my dental insurance will not cover the extractions and that medical needs to be billed. This is a $2000 procedure and I cant afford to pay up front and wait 6-8 weeks to be reimbursed and that I needed them to bill medical. She said they would bill medical for me as a courtesy as they see this alot. Get to the appt today and a different girl tells me that dental wont cover the extractions and that I need to pay up front and get reimbursed by medical! Im immediately livid because i specifically told them I couldnt do that!! She took us into a room and kept telling us they would do what they can to help, but that I would have to pay up front. How is that helping?? So I told her I was going to call both dental and medical to verify the coverages, which is THEIR job! I spent tye next hour on the phobe and found out that medical will cover quite a bit of the bill and that they would give a pre-auth. The first girl never came back into the room so my daughter went to get her and we were told she was busy and to go up front. We had to discuss the situation all over again with someone else and now in front of 3 other patients!! This new girl I was talking to had a smirk on her face the whole time like she was amused by how upset I was. No matter what I explained to them they absolutely would not do what they said they would do from the beginning and that is to bill medical for me. His staff were so pleasant and made me feel very comfortable. His reception area is beautiful, complete with bottled water for clients and a flat screen TV which was playing on my favorite movies. If you want the best care by a specialist that knows his stuff, come here. The assistants are so friendly and kind. I never knew how easy it was to have surgery till I got my wisdom teeth out here. They do a phone check on you the day of the surgery when you go home, and a week after, just to make sure you are doing fine. It really feels good to be cared for like that. It is clear they value the patient's health and satisfaction. Whatever knuckle heads wrote a bad review about here seem like the type that are exaggerating and blaming the doctor for problems they may have inevitably. People don't realize there is always risk of pain, swelling, exc. I work in a surgery center and I know that no matter what, some people just don't have the best bodily reaction to surgery, so the bad reviews seem invalid to me.
