This is the oldest grading service in the United States and the most unprofessional. ANACS was notified by phone of an over charge to my credit card, l requested a credit back to the card and was told the amount of the overcharge could be used for future grading services. Before I ended the call l advised the female representative that l would dispute the overcharge with my bank. l contacted my bank and disputed the "overcharged amount", which was processed the next day. A couple weeks later l called to get an update on my order and was advised it was complete and being shipped "today or tomorrow". My coins were returned "ungraded" in used, filthy sticky coin flips and with a statement that "ANACS would no longer be accepting my submissions. What fool in their right mind would do business with ANACS after this type of extremely deceptive treatment. I filed numerous complaints with several agencies nationwide regarding their failure to process a credit back to my credit card. Had l read the reviews about the company l never would have used them. ANACS deliberately refunded my money in two separate transactions. l wished company reviews would allow consumers to give zero stars when a company deserves a "0" because that's exactly what ANACS' score should be for this review. I sent them a 1909 s vdb penny for authentication and grading. I purchased it at a coin show for $ 1300. from a reputable dealer who said it was Extra Fine and would grade 45. ANACS confirmed the authenticity and graded it 45 as expected but marked the coin damaged. they did not note the type of damage or whereabouts on the coin. I called ANACS for a further explanation. They advised me that their grader had made no notes or offer any further details. They said I should resubmit the coin at my expense and they would look into it . I have already paid for this service ( including shipping , grading , and insurance ). If this company was reputable they would either give me and explanation or offer to harbor the cost of shipping and handling as it has been paid once already. It is certainly not my fault they did not note the damage that they claim they found. In addition, their customer Service Manager, Andrew, was abusive and rude and told me he would do nothing to rectify this and said Too Bad and hung up on me. Sent my coins off with a turnaround time of approx 4 weeks. They received them in May - I am still waiting and get fobbed off with excuses any time I call or email. Starting to think they lost them,,,,, 4 months is really not acceptable but trying to get them to refund the money I paid and just return the coins is a waste of time - they don't do that apparently no matter how long they take. I found a high quality coin that I needed graded by anacs looked at the pictures I sent them and said the coin is a fraud that it is a damaged coin not a mint mist strike it is a mint and strike point I know it for a fact I've already had it appraised by other coin dealers and they refuse to deal with it because of their arrogance and their rudeness they think they know it all. I must apologize the company was correct about the coin. However I can only date them 2/5 stars because 1. They should have done a better job explaining why they made the decision. 2. ANACS is pretty good but like nearly all grading services don't fully catch problem areas of many specimens qualifying for the less desired "details" grading category. I have submitted a coin to them where upon closer examination I noticed parts it were cleaned they did not catch. Nonetheless ANACS overall does quality work but isn't nearly perfect in their assessments (as none of them are, not even PCGS or NGC). In terms of holders the typical holder is a yellow color design, inert, in non-corrosive hard plastic with a bold black lettering description. Some of their labels can have fancy designs and pictures too along with the description. There is a tilt on the top edge of the label so a slab can be identified if kept standing up and looking down from above. ANACS also makes holders to fit its slabs. ANACS (like SEGS) is great for variety coins too. In many aspect they're similar to SEGS. ANACS posts populations of their graded coins by type in their online directory though you need to have an account with them to view this detailed information. ANACS also alerts you by email of the current status of your submission such as when it was received and how they graded before you get them returned, etc.. ANACS might wish to consider making a price guide to what they believe specific coins and exonumia in their slabs are worth on the market based on grade. I was told I should use this service to grade my 1799 coin. It's cheaper and faster. I thought, why not? I was at a coin show and filled out the submission paperwork at their booth. I found out the cost of the grading, and paid for it. And gave them my FedEx acct for shipping, but never found out what an approximate cost of shipping the graded coin back. I received the coin a few weeks later, with minimal paperwork- essentially a packing slip. I guessed at the total costs, because of no paperwork in the box. But after recieving he FedEx bill, the way they shipped to me was 4 times more expensive than the cost to grade, and more than the coin itself. I spoke to them about it afterward, but they don't have any idea of shipping costs, and said they aren't responsible for that. Geez, NGC and PCGS always knew beforehand and I paid their return shipping at the time of submission. I had no idea I'd be paying 4 times more by using Anacs. The total cost outweighs the benefit of using this cheaper grading service. (I gave them an extra star because their grading was fast. But that's about all the good I can say) read more

ANACS was the FIRST grading service out there, they began in 1972, started by the American Numismatic Association, Overall, I love the holders that they have, nice clear plastic you can see the entire coin, much like PCGS. In regards to the quality of the grading, ANACS is very good, but they would be considered 2nd tier behind PCGS and NGC, NGC BTW, is now the official coin grader of ANA. I've personally had good dealings with ANACS, they're very reasonable in their grading prices and well worth it. The other 2nd tier grading company would be ICG but go with ANACS if you dont go with PCGS or NGC. read more

ANACS is one of the three leading coin grading services, the other two being PCGS and NGC. ANACS initials stand for "American Numismatic Association Certification Service" and as the name implies ANACS is associated with the ANA which is perhaps the USA's oldest non-profit coin collecting society. All of the major grading companies, including ANACS, will authenticate, grade and then "slab" or encapsulate the coins in an air-tight plastic holder to help preserve the coin. Grading and slabbing will in general enhance the value of your coin. The only exception to this is if the grading company mis-grades your coin lower than what it should be - this will lower its value! There is an element of risk here, i.e. grading errors, but if you feel your coin was rated too low you can always crack it out of the slab! The positives of using ANACS are: 1) They do not require a membership fee before you can submit coins for grading, NGC and PCGS do 2) Their grading fees are lower than PCGS or NGC. Right now ANACS is running a special where you can submit 10 coins to them for $119 which includes free return shipping. ANACS also has special rates for bulk submissions. The main negative of ANACS is that coin collectors do not seem willing to pay much of a premium for ANACS graded coins. Collectors seem to pay the highest premiums for PCGS graded coins. Based on my experience I believe ANACS grades their coins quite accurately, at least as accurately as PCGS and NGC, and so I do not understand why there is a premium gap. It is important to note that ebay does recognize ANACS (along with PCGS, NGC, and ICG) as being reputable services and these are the only grading services which can be cited in you listings (if you have a coin graded by any service besides these four you cannot advertise the grading of the coin.) I like ANACS service but have been disappointed by the lack of market recognition of the value of ANACS graded coins. It is for this reason that I rate the service as a 4 instead of a 5. It took 18 weeks to grade and authenticate 13 coins. Then, they mailed (ups) without my street number. I had to file a claim with ups to get them to agree to resend, and admit their "mistake". They did a lousy job authenticating and their "master grader" could not give an explanation for there ineptness. They only stated the basics, like asking about algebra or calculus equations and being told how addition and subtraction are calculated. They cannot do the math. I believe the fact that they did not include a street number on my mailing address shows how poor their service is, or that they did it intentionally hoping that i might not file a claim? Why?? ...I won't say. You can figure it out. Again, they put no street number on my address. How? This is auto-generated. My address is correct in their system but not on the ups address. Then when confronting them with photo proof of their mistake, they try to convince me that I am wrong or delusional. There is no customer service at all that will help you if a problem arises. Inconsistent grading, many hidden fees, crappy customer policies, and they take forever to grade. I began using ANACS several years ago to grade a bunch of Morgan and Peace dollars. What I got back made very little sense and showed zero consistency. I decided not to use them again and wish I'd stuck by that. I've since had several of their ridiculously graded coins regraded by PCGS and they received much better grades. At a recent coin show, ANACS had a submission table and I thought maybe they've gotten better, so I took two high grade medieval coins in for grading - that was two months ago....I called to get an update and they're still 'waiting for consultation' with no 'consult' date in sight. I asked them to return my coins and refund the money I had paid them - for which they've done nothing. They said "no refunds", but they'll send my coins back and give me credit to submit more coins which they'll probably will sit on for months again.....this just stinks. They keep your coins essentially hostage while they dilly dally and do nothing. This will absolutely be my last use of ANACS - they're inconsistent, unreliable and downright pretty sleazy....never again. I feel pretty stupid trusting these clowns again. If you want another opinion on the grade and authenticity of a coin and you want it quickly, try ANACS. I have used ANACS on several occasions and was able to get a better price ( including the cost of certification) than selling the coins uncertified. I have also bought coins from local dealers and had them certified to confirm the grade that I had purchased them at. ANACS works well for me, the PCGS NGC graded coins are more popular. The drawback to PCGS and NGC is that you need to send your coins by mail, and it can take well over a month to get them back. Since ANACS is located within a half hours drive from my home, I can just drop off the coins to be certified and pick them up when they have been graded, which is usually within a two-week time frame. read more

Experts aren't experts, but they'll still charge you. I sent in 4 coins to be graded. Two were graded fine. One was to large (52mm) to be encapsulated in their slabs wick I didn't k ow about, so they didn't grade it, but still charges me. I had a foreign coin from the 1500's that I knew was real. They said it was a counterfeit replica, yet still charged me. The two coins they graded were a 2 cc Morgans. Pretty common. Sounds like the expert didn't know anything about the Foreign coin so he called it a counterfeit. After receiving it back, I took it to two coin dealers that both confirmed it was silver and genuine. They tested it and all. If I had authentication it could have easily sold it privately for 2,000, but since I didn't, I sold it to one dealer for $500. Highly doubt two reputable dealers that specialize only in coins would say it's authentic and pay me $500 for a counterfeit. I will never use ANACS again. Lazy amateurs, not experts. read more

Worst experience ever!! Terrible customer service and the coins were poorly graded. These coins bring lower prices for a reason. You will be wasting your money. I had to remove most the coins from the holder because the grades were inaccurate and the coins would be much better sold raw than to have the ANACS name on it. This is FACT!!!! Also had numerous coins returned ungraded because they do not have the knowledge to authenticate all coins. Sent back ungraded with no refund as well. Your supposed to be a professional grading service and you return 8 coins without resolve. Your coins are better Raw than in an ANACS Slab!!!! I sent in coins to Both ANACS and PCGS at the same time. Still waiting for the PCGS coins to be graded, and it is pushing a month now. I Got my coins from ANACS in less than the fifteen days their site said it would take. All the while I called PCGS and they extended their wait time for regular graded coins from 15 days to 30 days. As for turnaround time and customer service ANACS wins by a landslide from my perspective. Grading accuracy was good on the coins I received. One of ten was a bit higher than what I expected, and another one a bit lower than I expected. I also really like their holders, because you can stack them tightly in a box and can still read what the coin is. All the other companies you have to pull them out of the box to read them. This may sound unsubstantial, But when you have hundreds of coins boxed, and you are looking for one coin, it is a BIG timesaver. read more

I've had good experiences with US coins here but I will never send Ancient Coins again. It's a long, long wait for Ancient coins. From the time ANACS receives them til they're graded it seems to be about forty days. They send them to an independent grader. I will still send them my US coins even though the coin holder provided isn't very attractive. read more

ANACS Coin grading company is NOW an honest & trustworthy grader of coins. Their slabbed coins garnish lower premiums due to low standards many years ago. About 2-3 years ago company hired more professional graders & now grade as strict as PCGS or NGC. Very Tier 1 company now, but gonna take time to lose old bad habits/reputation! read more
