I have no complaints over the price and quality of the food. This review is about the ambiance. This is a great spot for the youth crowd (21-40) when the weather is not good enough to eat out on the patio. The noise level is almost where you cannot hear the person next to you. I would suggest the add some acoustic tiles to the ceiling to try to help bring down the decibel level. Otherwise enjoy. read more

Anchor Pub & Grille has become a destination for me in Boston. They usually have a twin lobster dinner special and on my last visit, it was Twining Tuesday. They offer a twin lobster dinner with one side for only $18.95 all day on Tuesdays!! What a deal! I had fries for my side, but their brussel sprouts were pretty good as well. So you can imagine it gets very crowded and packed on Tuesday nights with the locals. Not only is the price fantastic for lobster fans, Anchor Pub catches the lobsters in their own traps every day so it is fresh and perfectly prepared. Service is reasonably good considering on Tuesday nights, they do get slammed. They do not take reservations so wait could be as much as 1 hour depending upon your arrival time. They have both inside tables and bar seating and outside patio seating in good weather. They do also offer a great variety on their menu, but where most places charge $40 or more for twin lobsters, Anchor Pub & Grille is known as the place for their twin lobsters with the best price in town! read more

I was waiting for my food at The Anchor Pub this evening when the room filled with smoke from the kitchen. We were evacuated and several fire trucks responded. we were eventually allowed back inside. I returned to find that my food order was sitting there, covered with a take out container. I tried to eat it, however, it was luke warm. When I complained and paid my bill I was told that there would be no adjustment, as there was nothing that could be done. My family went out for dinner here last night. This place is mostly a bar, with a side dining room. Based on the recommendation of our very nice waiter, I opted for the swordfish tips special. While it was a generous portion, the swordfish pieces were served in a casserole dish filled with an excessive amount of water. The pieces were all very watery and fishy tasting, even after being covered in lemon juice and butter. When the bill came, we were surprised to see that we were given two prices: one for cash and one for credit (there was about an $8 difference between the two for our party of four). There are a lot of good seafood restaurants in the North Shore, and based on this experience, I'd opt for someplace else next time. read more

Buyer Beware! Go for the drinks, not the food... We ordered the special of the day, 2 lobsters with sides. Upon receiving my lobster, it had a bit of a strange sulfur smell but I tried not to overthink it...sadly, I should have trusted my gut because the taste was also very off-putting. I have had lobster many times and have never experienced such a foul odor or flavor; and both my husband and I have an awful taste in our mouth after eating it. The butter also smelled strange. I am genuinely worried that I will be puking tonight after eating a few pieces. What started as a nice date night has turned into a disturbing experience. A bit disappointed but it's ok. It's our fault for not checking first. So, I ordered the Irish Eggs Benedict (I really loved how they made the corned beef hash), brother and sister got Corned Beef Hash and eggs, and friend got the Ultimate Anchor Breakfast (the French toast was good). Food purchased was $53.00. After "taxes and fees", my bill came to over $64.00. They listed out a 10% tax on my bill, so I would have understood being charged ~58.00. when I asked where the other 6$ in charges came from, the bartender indicated it was credit card and to go fees? it gives odd that he didn't list this on my bill - it's also distasteful to pay 11+ dollars in fees without even dining in. I have not experienced this at other restaurants. They also don't answer the phone if you wanted to ask about these 'charges', i.e. what is the credit card fee and what is the fee for to go orders. The Anchor is a VERY popular hangout. The Tiki Bar has generous pours and prices on all the food and beverage items are very reasonable. They also allow well behaved dogs on the patio. The only ding on the ambiance is traffic noise. The shrimp Scampi pizza is excellent, and the specials vary, but again, you really cannot beat the prices for a seafood restaurant. Portions are big. Huge. Food service was great except a couple of items came out cold. Odd. Stuffed clams. Same order, one clam hot; one clam cold. 2 cups of clam chowder; one hot, one cold. I'm guessing maybe the regular chef had the night off. This place is always packed. With good reason. Very reasonable prices. Gargantuan portions. Servers are friendly and efficient. The food was "ok." We enjoyed the atmosphere and sitting outside. We had a couple drinks and they were good. Staff was friendly and helpful. We had a grilled cheese (that was not grilled and then microwaved) and lobster roll (cold). The lobster roll was good bread was crunchy. This may be normal but for some reason I thought it was soft. The Anchor used to be a great go to for seafood but I have been there twice in the last few weeks. First was a Tuesdsy afternoon, I had fried clams. Dark brown and tasted awful. The oil they were cooked in was done and should have been changed. The second visit was today, Saturday night at 6. I got fried scallops, same result, dark brown and ruined flavor. I sent them back. Something has changed in the management there and It isn't good. The cooks should know better but do nothing and the management that should have systems in place to keep the oil fresh obviously aren't paying attention. It's still a nice place for a drink but stay far away from fried seafood or prepare to send it back. The Anchor seems to be living off of instead of living their reputation. Sad. read more

My coworkers and I wanted to come here as we heard it is a very popular divey bar with good food and cheap drinks. Since it was Labor Day weekend we expected it to be busy but not as busy to have to wait an hour for a table. Seats are inside and outside. They offer shots which is a plus and a variety of cocktails, beers on tap, and more with their full bar. We shared a few combo appetizers plates which included mozzarella sticks, onion rings, chicken wings, French fries, and jalapeño poppers, oh my! We also shared two large pizzas one with bacon and pineapples as well as mushroom and bell peppers. I loved the variety of appetizers and even the pizza dough was decent! Before heading home after dropping our daughter off at school we found the Anchor Pub. A good local spot packet with a lively crowd on a Sunday early aftwrnoon Excellent atmosphere and Great staff. We sat at the bar which had a coupke spots open. The clam chowder was some of the best we have ever had. It was full of clams and potatoes along with great flavorful seasonibg. We also had a couple Lobster rolls which had a good amount of lobster and just a slight hint of mayo. The prices were reallt good especialky for what you get. WOW! Want a find this place is. I did a search for "inexpensive pub food". When this came up , I checked out the menu and pricing. Both looked very nice. When my wife and I got there ( located at the start of the bridge over to Salem) it was a full house. The bar length is huge! I mean HUGE and it is a rectangle. We went at 6:00 pm on a Sat night and had to wait about 30+ minutes to get a seat (there are dinning rooms as well). The place is very well staffed and despite how straight out they were, several of the staff checked in on us several times. The patrons were so friendly it seemed odd in this day and age. In the end ( of our wait) a patroning couple came down a considerable way from up the bar to tell us they were leaving and to come get their seats at the bar. It was like being at "Cheers" ( the show). The food was spot on and so affordable. Service was quick, neighboring patrons were super friendly. I can't wait to go back. read more

Had an appt. in Beverly so decided to try the Anchor Pub for a late lunch. What a great surprise. Their lobster roll is not only one of the best deals around, but it's fantastic - absolutely stuffed with fresh lobster, maybe 1/2 lb or close. Not only that but the french fries were so good I ate all of them and I never do that. My husband had the meat loaf and loved it - even the sides looked great, really fresh brussel sprouts and carrots and skin on mashed. The place was mobbed at 2:30 on a Wednesday afternoon and almost everyone at the bar had a plate of food in front of them. Everyone who worked there was super friendly too, great vibe. Now we're going to look for excuses to go to Beverly just to go to the Anchor again. The only thing I could have asked for was Allagash White on tap, but the Seasonal Sam filled in just fine. read more

But today was disappointing the three bartenders outside were more concerned about putting their order in for their lunch than taking care of the three live girls at the bar that wanted a vodka soda. On a monday. And then she Got mad because we didn't know she totaled the bill on the back side of the slip. Boy did she give us a nasty look. My friend treated me to lunch there today for my Birthday. My first time there. Very busy place, but we didn't have a very long wait for a table. The girl greeting guests was very pleasant. We both got the fried Haddock sandwich and opted for fries instead of chips. The food was very good and not skimpy at all on the fish portion. I would have given 5 stars except our server had zero personality. It seemed like we were a bother to her. The hubs and I came here for lunch yesterday; they opened at 1130, and 1230 the bar was packed, which was a bummer because we love sitting at bars. They had a lot more seating back by the bathrooms and pool table. They also had a cute little dining room area with a beautiful bridge mural. It took a few for us to be acknowledged and offered a table. But once seated, service was swift and helpful. Actually, how fast we got our drinks with how busy they were was a pleasant surprise. With most dive bars, I like to try out the wings to get a feel for the place. These buffalo wings were tender meat and crunchy on the outside, and oh my, that buffalo sauce was SPICY, and the heat built up with each bite! Maybe a bit too much sauce on them, but we managed to finish them all! Next time I think I would ask for the sauce on the side or lighter toss. They have daily specials, and the server was kind to describe a few. I chose the seafood pie, it had shrimp, lobster, scallops and haddock in a butter sauce topped with breadcrumbs. The dish was super decadent, and I could not finish. I chose to upgrade to a side salad along with fries. They are generous with the portions here, and the price is wicked inexpensive. Hubs got the fried haddock with pub fries and coleslaw. He said everything was tasty, but the coleslaw was a bit bland. Next time, we will aim to be there right when they open so we can sit at the bar, but there definitely will be many more meals here! read more
