As promised, I like to give restaurants second chances. It so happened a few of our friends kept raving about the Tavern, so we decided now was the right time. We came a couple Saturdays ago at lunch time. It was packed but we didn't have to wait long for a seat. The interior met expectations, and we loved all the wood, and the high arch seats. Started with the artichoke spinach dip. This was delicious! The pitas were fried and added a wonderful texture. Hubs got his burger which he devoured and a friend and I split the vegetarian quesadilla! This was so well seasoned and the caramelized onions melted in my mouth! Drinks were pretty good as well. Might have to try them for date night dinner again!

Went to The Tavern at the Hawthorne Hotel and overall it was a really good experience -- the place has that classic Salem/old-hotel vibe and it's a great spot for dinner or drinks. Food was solid and the drinks were on point. Everything came out pretty quick and most of the staff was friendly. Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars: the vibe was a little creepy (which I know is kind of the point in Salem lol), and the boy who seated us was honestly pretty rude and made the first impression weird. That said, I'd still go back because the food/drinks and overall atmosphere are worth it -- just hoping the service/hosting is better next time.

Awesome tavern restaurant in the lobby of the historic hawthorn hotel. Staff was great; friendly and worked quickly. Food was super tasty and portions did not disappoint.

The Tavern at The Hawthorne was a classic place to have dinner. The haunted hotel is decorated for the spooky season, the servers are great, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu, and the food tasted awesome. I got the Seafood Stew, and my gluten-free, vegan wife got the Coconut-Curry Bowl with Tofu. We will return.

Easy to make reservation and no wait time at all to be seated. Waitress and staff friendly. The ambience and decor is old fashion classy. There was a wedding reception next door and music traveled over. It didn't bother me, in fact it was fun to see the party crowd and wanted to make me want to dance. The food was very good and tasty. The drinks were very pretty.

We were very happy to be able to make a reservation at the Tavern in the Hawthorn Hotel for dinner on our trip to Salem. We decided to darn our witches costumes and head to dinner for some fun. The service was fantastic and the wait staff was not even phased that we were dress up like lunatic fools LOL! I ordered a Downeast Hard Cider for a cocktail and the gourmet grilled cheese with an added chicken breast and onion rings. It was exactly what I was in the mood for and very good. I ate half and took half home. The leftovers were just as good. The Tavern was cozy and relaxing and the perfect ending to the night after running around Salem all day. An added bonus to having dinner at the Hawthorn is parking. They have a guest parking Lot for anyone eating at the restaurants or staying at the hotel. Parking in Salem around this time of year is very difficult so this is big. What a fun experience.

Great lunch experience. Love the atmosphere. Service was on point. Check out the menu! Lots of veggie options.

This tavern has a lot of potential, but unfortunately, it feels like it's stuck in the middle ground. Maybe stuck in tourism? They know they will always have business so why spend time and money on making it epic... The atmosphere is casual and laid-back, which is perfect for grabbing a drink with friends or walking-in to get off your feet. The interior is cozy enough, but the vibe felt a bit dated, with some areas that could use a refresh (some areas smelled odd like moldy?). The menu offers the usual tavern fare--burgers, fries, wings, and sandwiches but a bit more elevated. For example, the veggie curry was good and the grilled cheese was oh so fancy and FLAVORFUL but both those dishes were severely overpriced. We had a table of seven and other than those two dishes, everyone else stated that the food was decent but unremarkable. Each of us ordered two to three drinks each (we basically went down the drink menu). The drinks were on par with what you'd expect for a local tavern, with a solid selection of beers on tap, though the cocktails were underwhelming in both presentation and taste. Never have I ever received an Old Fashioned with crushed ice and no cherry. I decided to ask for a different version each time (definitely with NO crushed ice--JAIL) to see if they would get better...nope. Service is friendly enough, but it can feel a bit slow during busier times. The staff seems stretched thin, which might be the cause of the occasional wait (and poorly crafted drinks), but they were polite and did their best to make you feel comfortable. All in all, this place is fine if you're in the area and craving some standard pub food and drinks, but don't expect any culinary surprises or a particularly memorable experience.

It was pretty busy but our server Matt was able to handle the floor well and we never felt like we were forgotten. My aunt and I both ended up getting the baked haddock which was delicious and I finished with the Nutella affogato. For drinks we also had the harvest margarita (tasty!) & the cosmic mule! I'm not a huge fan of mules so it wasn't for me but my aunt liked it!

We were in search of a dinner spot when our original plans fell through, and we were able to walk right into the Hawthorne Hotel! The building is old, charming, and gorgeous. The food and drinks were superb - I loved the seasonal pumpkin martini! The nachos came with a huge portion and were tasting and filling. We both enjoyed our entrees - my burger was just what I wanted and the onion rings were crispy! We don't recommend the old fashioned though. The only downside of the meal was the service - it took us nearly 2 hours to have our meal. I'm fine with slower service, but our server wasn't communicating the holdups to us and we saw a lot of others around us finish their meals first who got in much later than we did. More thoughtfulness from the server would have saved the experience. Overall, I'd recommend it, but leave yourself some time in case the service is slow.

It's a great location, service was a little questionable. First they cleared my table while I went to the restroom. Then I ordered a Brie burger, it clearly states Brie in the name and description. I was given blue cheese. When I questioned the server she said it was Gorgonzola cheese and that's what it said in the description. Totally gas light me! It doesn't say that in the description at all.

Another fabulous dinner at The Tavern. I wish I remembered our servers name. He was so attentive and nice. Tonight the Hotel and dining room were so festive looking for e upcoming Holiday. And to see the outside tree lights through the windows was beautiful.

You enter old world charm with this cozy restaurant. Everything is cooked to order so don't come when you are in a rush but definitely come when you have time to enjoy it. The service was great it was a little on the loud side but that was mainly due to one large party. Everything we had was delicious and just the right size I'll definitely be back. #chickenpanini #meatloaf #saltedcarmelmartini #coconutcurry #cheeseburger #cremebrulee #churros #cheeseboard #willflyforfood #dinner #salem #Massachusetts

Hello! Is the dining area accepting reservations for the first week in October? Thanks in advance.

I would call them they will be inundated

I am staying at the hotel for one night (10/19/20) and am interested in having dinner here. Is it wise to make a reservation? Thank you.

Yes! Please book a table well in advance. You can book via Yelp (but go to Nathaniel's - that's the other restaurant in the hotel -- all reservations are made via this listing but seating is primarily in the Tavern) or call 978-825-4311 to speak…

I ordered the steak tips and my only complaint if I was to have one was the limited options for the side. It was onion rings or rice . It came with a salad that was lame ... I'd drop the salad for a veggie or sauteed onions and grilled black green peppers . I ordered onion rings and excellent onion rings. I really wanted cream spinach, garlic spinach or mashed, or baked potato or corn , carrots anything? Grilled garlic green beans even better with my tips . They said the meat was dry and more like flat pieces of steak cut up into 3-4 inch pieces of steak than "steak tips." More like, the tip of nothing. My dad who has a legendary appetite left his food half eaten. My brother called me the next day to apologize for taking me to a place that had obviously gone downhill since the last time he had eaten there. As a vegetarian, I expected to order a salad and was psyched when I saw on the menu that they offered a Greek salad. But what they brought was not a Greek salad. It was a big bowl of rusty iceberg lettuce. The server saw me picking the rusty lettuce out of the bowl and she sent it back to the kitchen. What they brought back was another massive bowl of cut up iceberg lettuce, with a couple pieces cherry tomatoes and cucumber, and a clump of feta on top. The chef needs to google the recipe for Greek salad. On the way out I mentioned to the server, "What you brought me was not a Greek salad." She said, "Well it's OUR Greek salad." Nope, that's not how this works. Just take it off the menu if you're not going to even try to make an effort, please. Also, can I just note that the ambience of this restaurant is like a medical waiting room. It wouldn't be that hard to try to create a more pleasant environment. Basically, anything would be an improvement.
