    I have an autoimmune diagnosis and transferring to this clinic has been distressing and defeating…read more I didn't expect an "expert" to try to invalidate my diagnosis, argue with all my symptoms, some of which are life threatening, and pretend my abnormal labs & images are normal. I don't know if its because Im a woman, but I feel extremely invalidated and depressed every time I talk to my doctor. Since he won't acknowledge the other problems my disease is known to cause, no other OHSU specialist apparently will either. Its the familiar, being sent on a wild goose chase to a bunch of different specialists who pretend like its not autoimmune related because this doctor has too many patients and not enough knowledge to acknowledge the full extent of my disease, and this is supposed to be the clinic that specializes in it. Hes announced he is giving me 3 months of treatment and if Im not better, plans to drop me. So you better hope humira or Inflectra work, because that is all this clinic does for every single autoimmune disorder and patient, at least women, who are known to have trouble getting the right meds, and if it doesn't work, they drop you like yesterday's trash. My doctor should consider reading the literature on the disease he claims to be an expert on. On the bright side, at least I get 2 Inflectra infusions. A lot of rheumatologists won't deal with my rare disease, which is what I thought OHSU was supposed to be for. Note to OHSU: vasculitis exists, especially when other autoimmune disorders are present, but I guess one dead patient is one less patient.

Which is crazy since I have almost all of the symptoms . I have seen a specialist in rheumatology in another state and he said I have a rheumatic disease, it's rare and hard to diagnose. No help from OHSU Rheumatology, to even see me. I've also seen one of their other doctors in Dermatology, his name is Eric Simpson. He was one of most arrogant rude doctors I've ever seen. He didn't even listen to me as the patient. This place might have been a nice hospital a long time ago, but all the good doctors must have left.. including the supposed doctors that screen there referrals. Which obviously don't know what they are doing. The PNW really need better medical, the people are suffering and this place and the physicians don't care. I will never support a establishment like this and I will tell everyone, about how they treat patients

The whole purpose of their existence is to discredit the doctors they sent you two. So if you're hurt on the job, and Sedgwick or Saif ever sends you to this place, I recommend you get an attorney. They sent my wife there for an evaluation. They made her do all these movements to try to establish her pain level. She said she was in pain, and the doctor recorded on his digital recorder that she felt no pain even though she was telling him she was in pain because, get this... It didn't show on her face. My wife is as stoic AF. When she had our child you couldn't read on her face that she was in pain. When she got third degree burns on her hand, you wouldn't know it by looking at her face. Yet, this so-called doctor, went into the room to examine her already having made up his mind that he should discredit her claim of being in pain. My wife has worked for the company where she hurt herself for 15 years, and we never thought for one moment that we would sue them for her injury. But after experiencing the length they are going to go through, sending her to quack doctors who will say whatever they want, I think we're going to be looking for an attorney. My greatest regret was not having been in the facilities while she was being examined. Because he would have gotten a piece of my mind.

    I signed up for VA benefits in 1968 shortly after my honorable discharge from active duty. I…read morerarely used any of the services offered except for my student loan benefit mostly because back then employers offered excellent medical insurance at no cost to employees. So I figured since I was getting great medical with zero out of pocket cost I'd let some other Veteran who was less fortunate take my place for VA medical. That and VA hospitals did not have the greatest reputation back then. So fast forward a few decades and along comes Obamacare. I was self employed by this time. With the astronomical monthly cost of this new "affordable care" coupled with insanely high deductibles and co-pays, I started taking advantage of this long dormant benefit. To be clear, I joined the military because I felt that it was my duty as a citizen to serve. I never expected free medical for life. but I have to say, in my old age, living on social security, having this VA health care benefit has been a blessing. I'm still in very good health especially considering my age and my use of these benefits has been minimal. I have a great PCP and usually go to the Hillsboro clinic for medical appointments. Recently I had a very serious, life altering medical emergency that saw me going to the VA hospital ER for the first time in my life. It would not be an exaggeration to say that they saved my life. I would also not be overstating to say that everyone there was totally amazing. Especially the ER nurse who brought me back to life. And the nurses and doctors on 6D who were all angels of mercy. Best care anywhere. I'd say it was a great experience except that I came closer to death than I have ever been. But everyone there took amazing care of me. As sick as I was, I needed nothing. Food was great once I was able to eat. Nurses were all friendly, cheerful and took care of everything. And the doctors? And especially the resident MD who was my primary care person there.... incredible. I gather some of the Va facilities in the US are not as stellar. But the Portland VA hospital is well known as being top tier. My Sister the Shrink who lives on the east coast told me that this facility is the best in the country. I couldn't agree more. I am so grateful to the hard working, dedicated staff at this hospital. I come here now and then for tests and so on so it's not just the emergency care people who are great. I've yet to have an even mediocre experience here. If I had to complain about anything it's the fact that parking here is impossible. However, Trimet has a bus route that drops you off at the front door. Plus there is a free ride share program for all Veterans needing transportation to/from any VA facility in Portland. Have a child/grandchild who is enlistment age? Encouraging them to serve in one of the armed services has a great many benefits. This is just one of them. One of my kiddos is former Army and I'm sure he would agree.

The…read moreonly reason that I manage to get the care that I need is because I have learned the people to communicate with when I need help. It's taken 7 years of going to this particular VA to ensure I get the care that I need, but ultimately, the timing is dismal (months, weeks, even years to access needed care, depending on the care) and, as mentioned by other reviewers, veterans are often treated extremely poorly. The poor treatment, in my experience, has been rooted in a history of gaslighting (particularly women, but I'm certain men, too) in medicine, poor pay, poor funding, and general low morale among employees. Generally-speaking, the providers are good, but I concur with the reviewer who mentioned that residents are working on, and assessing and treating, veterans without their knowledge in many cases, or approval. Also, without appropriate accompanying doctors. The doctor may or may not come later. We don't generally get a say, so I've made a stink a few times because having a doctor tell a resident, while injecting saline solution into muscles near my shoulder, "don't go too far or you'll hit a lung" gave my horrible anxiety a spike, destroyed my minimal energy for the day, and gave me a vagal response. We should be given the option of a resident, the VA should not be offloading full appointments on them, which is largely what it's doing because relying on goodwill to attracted employees is abuse (of both employees and veterans). I have read people blaming Trump, and frankly, I agree with them, but I want to be clear that the VA has experienced continued and extensive defunding through congress for decades. It is shameful, considering they're the ones voting to take us to war. Suggestion for Accessing Care: If you're unhappy with the poor care, you need to do more than write a poor review online: call and write your senators, representatives, contact the social workers at the VA to get assistance. They're busy, but the social workers (you can search VA Portland "patient advocate") will do the best they're able to help you access care. I also have found that both psychiatrists and psychologists (if you happen to be seeing them at the VA) are excellent at helping get you needed information or directing you to people you might otherwise be unable to contact (they refuse to publish anything but general phone numbers on their website and so you often sit on hold as "number 18 in line"- another shameful way the VA treats patients). It's the specialty clinics that are the worse. I do the best I can, often waiting for a window when there are no appointments at the VA specialty clinic I need, to request community care. Do your research, though, as with the VA, it is often "turn and burn" clinics and doctors in the community that accept the embarrassingly low pay the VA will approve for treatment. They also are told to deny a good range of care, that is often very helpful, because of costs. So, your health isn't a priority of the government, the VA in general, or the VA in Portland. PT at this VA is the absolute WORST. Primary care isn't always bad, though I have had to request a switch to a new provider at various times when I was unhappy. Access to care, even in the community (outside of the VA), is backed up and scheduled way out. The only priority I've heard of is for cancer patients. Everyone else has to wait, unless you want to fork out money on your own as a disabled veteran. Private practitioners are expensive though, and most disabled veterans don't have that kind of extra money to spend. In the end, I believe the system is functioning as-intended: the goal is for veterans to die, get sick, become homeless, and fail to access care. The fewer veterans the better. Also, because accessing care is a full-time job, I think you all are missing the point: they don't WANT you to access care. They want you to give up. They don't want to invest in you, your health, or your wellbeing in any way. Anyone who doesn't realize that is fooling themselves. It's the same with all social services in America, they want to eliminate or remove as many as possible, or create so many hurdles to access that people give up. And they do, because they're working so much just to make ends meet they do not have the energy. These are OUR tax dollars, friends. Start recognizing that and holding our government accountable for all these preventative measures and, maybe, just MAYBE, things could improve. Also, the VA in Long Beach was a million times worse. The sheer volume of patients makes everyone there miserable- so they're mean, terrible providers, by and large, and they literally create barrier after barrier to accessing doctors and needed care. Here, at the Portland VA, it takes a lot of work, but keep your own phone list with people, their roles, and their extensions so you know who to contact in the future.

I have been trying for three weeks now to get a simple statement showing my payments to MFCC for FSA substantiation and just now received an email bounceback that their office is closed all week. Firstly, it's impossible to reach the front desk - voicemail only. Then they call you back from an unlisted number, so it's impossible to know who is calling. Argh. Then, the doctor requires that you submit new patient paperwork via email for her to review before you are allowed to make an appointment. The reason given is that she might decide she doesn't think you fit in her practice. It then takes a week to hear back after emailing over the paperwork. after which, you need to follow up with them, if you want an appointment. No courtesy call the day before to remind you there's an appointment, so you call to see what's doing there and have to let it ring out and call again. Receptionist answers finally and confirms yes, you do have an appointment. You arrive 10 minutes early, then wait until 25 mins past the start of your appointment time to speak with the Doctor. The Doctor is thorough and nice (if quite defensive about being called out for being so late). Attempts by staff to draw blood - the student MA's attempt is painful and she aborts mission. (Bruise is already looking pretty gnarly) Bring in the senior tech to have a go at the other arm - who can't find a vein and aborts mission after digging around for a bit. At this stage, I've been at their office for 1 Hr 40 mins. They tell me they will write a script to go to a lab and have blood drawn. Knowing my personal compliance level to find the time to drive to yet another appointment is very low, tell them not to bother. Needless to say, despite friendly student medical assistant and thorough/friendly Doctor, I'm still in the market for a new GP. A busy schedule, low tolerance for being gratuitously poked with needles and a general aversion to waiting = this probably isn't the right place for me.

I have been with Dr. Carr for many years and she is one of the most caring and friendly doctors I have ever been to. She makes it feel like a true family doctor visit. Its rumored that in the future they are going to have natural medicines and massage therapist. Its truly a one stop shop.
