After trying to troubleshoot it myself (and making things considerably more confusing!), Stephen came out for a diagnostic and quickly sorted through years of previous repairs and workarounds. He discovered that one controller output had failed, a previous contractor had combined two zones as a temporary fix, one of the drip valves had failed, and the original valve wiring needed to be remapped correctly. Rather than simply replacing a single part and leaving me with an aging system, he took the time to explain my options without any pressure. I decided to replace the controller, all five valves, solenoids, and wiring so the entire irrigation system would essentially be brand new. The workmanship is outstanding. The wiring is clean and organized, every valve is labeled, the controller is programmed and clearly documented, and everything now works exactly as it should. What impressed me most was Stephen's professionalism, honesty, and communication. He patiently answered all of my questions, explained what he was finding, and made sure I understood why each recommendation was being made. It's obvious he takes pride in doing the job right rather than just getting the job done. If you're looking for someone who is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and meticulous, I highly recommend Stephen and Tried and True Irrigation. This was one of the best home service experiences I've had, and I wouldn't hesitate to call them again.

Every contractor I've ever dealt with sends written confirmation of the appointment, cost, and scope of work before the job, and you agree to it by responding. This never happened. We set up an appointment for 9/14/26. According to CSLB, the service fee and terms should be put in writing so there is no confusion and both parties are in agreement. When Stephen arrived, he checked the system. After he finished, he again mentioned charging $150. The plumber from the insurance company had already run tests to determine where the problem was. I was uncomfortable paying him because we did not have an agreement in writing, and a licensed plumber had already done an assessment. Stephen also told me he wanted me to leave the water to the sprinkler system on for a few days so he could come back and check the area in the front yard that had previously had a pool of water. I had already mentioned this issue to him earlier. I was against leaving the water on, because the system was not working properly and last month's water bill was $205. It didn't make sense to run a malfunctioning system and wastewater. After he went around the house, he showed me on his cell phone the prices of each item that needed to be replaced. The total came out to approximately $2200. A few hours later, I had an appointment with a plumber for my water heater. The shut-off valves for the sprinkler and water heater. The shut-off valves for the sprinkler and water to the house needed the knob replaced (according to the plumber from the insurance company). We felt that a landscaper would not be comfortable removing this. He said he would send me an estimate. I showed him the sprinkler pop-ups that Stephen looked at earlier, and they had been vandalized. All I saw was a clear plastic tube sticking up out of the ground. Stephen was upset because I did not pay him, so he took the sprinkler heads. This is ridiculous extremely unprofessional. If it were me, I would put everything in writing. Stephen told me he did not want the job because he felt he would not get paid. But if you are a licensed contractor and have a written contractual agreement, and the customer doesn't pay, you can take them to court.
