Attended my first NYFW show here, and it was amazing! A beautiful venue for New York Fashion Week. I was told by someone who worked here that it's the oldest synagogue in NYC. The space is wide open, airy, elegant. There's also stairs that lead to an upstairs area, which for NYFW, they set up as a bar. The lighting is beautiful here too, and the shows were fun to watch. I would definitely recommend this space for any fashion shows or even parties / functions. They also have beautiful artwork on display! read more

In a nutshell: Great venue for Advertising Week to select for the Culture and Commerce Lunch! THE GOOD Easily convenient, just a couple of blocks away, this former church space and beauty is ideal for different types of events, the decoration only enhanced the experience. THE BEST Service, I would say that not having to ask my water to be refilled is already an accomplishment, LOL! I enjoyed the salad dressing, very complimentary of the fresh vegetable. The vegan risotto could have benefitted from salt and a warmer temperature than the room's, however, the colorful dessert options and the pinot grigio were the true highlights. Loved being at this repurposed synagogue for an event. All of the old architecture is there, and there is much to explore if you can take a step away from the bar. The balcony (which in a synagogue may have been a women's section) is now set with pillows and curtains, for people to sit and shmooze it up. Where the bimah (the podium or platform in a synagogue from which the Torah and Prophets are read) used to be is now a platform for art, music and fashion. Oy, a shanda. (love it) read more

I had my wedding here and it was AWESOME! Rental was 12 hours long and included the chairs, tables, plates, glasses, silverware, sound system, lighting (and technician!), security, and candelabras. Comfortable, central air, wheelchair accessible. Lighting tech is amazing (and a very nice guy, will meet with you beforehand to determine your theme, show you all the options, etc.) Cocktail hour was great upstairs while they set up dinner below, had plenty of room and people went nuts over the interesting architectural details. They don't lock you in and make you use only their approved vendors, nor do they charge extra for using your own people. Hours of rental give you enough time to load in without any stress, and it's great to have a location where you can do everything under one roof. Worth every penny. read more

I bought a vip ticket to New York fashion show in Angel Orensanz Foundation on 02.11.2023. they sold more tickets than the seats, and they told me to wait half of the show on the balcony until they bring additional chairs. when they found additional chairs, the show had already began and they told me that I can't seat to my seat after the show began and that I should stand. I came here for a sorority sister's wedding and I have to say it's very picturesque :) The Angel Orensanz Foundation is definitely one of those beautiful venues hidden in the city.. The inside of the church looks very gothic and historical. It looks even more amazing when the building is lit up. Great place to hold an event! read more

I came here for the Fat Friday event celebrating Mardi Gras. I will hand it to the organizers, it's the most authentic Mardi Gras event this city has to offer. I'll never understand why in a city that will embrace any reason for a good time (Santa Con, anyone?) this New Orleans tradition is almost completely ignored. Maybe we just can't stop listening to EDM long enough to appreciate some brass. Speaking of, the live jazz band was absolutely fantastic. It was lively and easy to move to, no sleepy background nonsense here. The venue itself is gorgeous, the pictures don't exaggerate, and there were lots of nooks and crannies and attention to detail and funky lighting to really bring the space to life. The crowd for this event was more Burning Man than Bourbon Street, but I think that's a naturally occurring overlap anyway. Most people did come in costume, but there were a few folks in regular clothes. My only issue was the drink ticket system. You had to pay for tickets which you then used to buy alcohol. Just let me pay for my drinks directly! I had to wait on line for tickets, then for drinks, and at the end of the night had a bunch of leftover tickets. I didn't ask if I could be reimbursed for the tickets I didn't use, I just shoved all the cans I had spent money on in my purse, cuz I'm classy like that. read more

I attended a wedding recently at this LES Synagogue converted to shabby chic monument to a Spanish Sculptor with a gift for self promotion. It is a cool space, especially with the large balloons and lighting scheme they installed. This was a shmancy affair complete with an overly long service and snacks containing $ ingredients but little taste. The dinner was quite good however Speaking of taste... what was with the Neil Diamond impersonator? Overall the space was pretty cool though. One thing I noticed. They have the ceremony and main meal on the main floor and cocktails in the balcony above while they set up in between. If you are having a wedding or something here any elderly relatives are going to have a really hard time getting up the steps and might get left behind. That is a real concern. read more

The place has charm and looks great once it's decorated and the tables set, but to work with the Angel Orensanz people is a nightmare - or extremely difficult at best. Misleading information, lies, weeks of unreturned phone calls and emails, sudden hidden fees and a general atmosphere of disorganization will leave you exhausted and irritated. I've been to quite a few part-e events here over the years. Last few have been sponsored by microsloft so of course that means open bar and models bringing drinks around. Hey I dig that. Of course the music at a tech event, even if it's somewhat star-studded, always seems a little off. Perhaps it's not late enough into the witching hours for good music to come on. Still there was plenty of booty shakin and fun. Years ago I remember going to some slammin parties here. Don't recall back then who hosted. The space is fun too, it's a converted church of some kind, and has lots of little nooks, and corners, and high vaulting ceiling. read more

I heart this space.... WIth the "work" lights on it isn't much to look at but turn on the "magic" lights and this place turns into something you only hear about in fairy tales. I've only been here once, but it's a really great space. The event I attended was a Yeah Yeah Yeahs show put on by Motorola. The sound was ok, but that might have been from the sound system they rented for the performance. I wish this place would host shows normally. I love that it has some history and is still going to good use instead of being torn down. If you get a chance to attend an event here, do it! read more

If you can afford it, book this place for an upcoming special event. It's the site of an old synogogue and has held on to many of the beautiful details and windows from its former incarnation. A little spooky but elegant, this place can be transformed into anything you would want it to be. It's also often the site for fundraisers and celebrity nuptuals (eg. Love this place. Not much more to say about it other than it reminds me of the old, untouched 17th Century playhouses that still stand in Bergamo, Italy. This venue has tons of old world charm, and with the modern day sophisticated events that tend to transpire here, you're sure to have a good time. read more

I had my wedding here and it was absolutely amazing. It's expensive, and it's definitely not for everybody, so make sure you check out this place in the light of day so you're fully aware that it's not a pristine hotel or gallery space. But, if you can get past the underwhelming exterior and you want a venue with "character", this might be the spot for you! Also: bringing in your own caterer opens the door to more affordable food that doesn't suck (unlike other venues with pre-packaged in-house catering). In sum: I think AO is the most unique and special venue in the city, and I'm so glad I chose it for my wedding! read more

The space is very beautiful, but I would *highly* recommend that you think long and hard before using this space for a wedding. I had heard rumors of the management there being unreliable, but we checked it out anyway. They told us that our desired date was available and that they were holding it for us. We saw it and loved it. We brought our parents in from out of town to see it. They also loved it. We were getting ready to book it after going to see it for the 3rd time and suddenly they didn't have the date any longer - apparently it had been booked before we even saw it the first time, but they dragged us around for a month anyway. Without really even an apology. You would think that in this economy, if someone was prepared to shell out that kind of money to rent out their space and you made a mistake like that you would be beside your self with apologies and trying to find a solution... Your wedding day should be stress free - you shouldn't have to be wondering if you can trust them! read more

This is a great, intimate venue to see bands. Even when standing in the back, you are close enough to see everything. The stained glass windows and other ornate details often found in churches and synagogues give a sense of closeness and you leave with no doubt that whatever you experienced is up there with one of the best moments ever. Even if the band sucked and the event was boring. I was lucky enough to catch a closed concert with an open bar. Lucky me! read more

Recently attended a wedding here and the venue is beautiful if you have an appreciation for old architecture. The place was beautifully decorated. The ceremony was held and afterwards, they used the space for the dinner, band and dance floor. Upstairs they had the hors d' oeuvres, which overlooked where the ceremony took place. The staff was extremely friendly and efficient from passing of the hors d' oeuvres and mini desserts on sticks to those on the dance floor without interrupting the festivity, to cleaning the tables to even folding the napkins every time you got up, to checking coats in and out, . After the wedding, they broke everything down without any disturbance to the few guests that were lingering. If they didn't work for the Angel Orensanz Foundation, then whatever catering company did the event, did a fantastic job. read more

They have a mechanical chair that brings the person up the front steps and into the venue, and up into the balcony for the cocktail hour as well. read more

Very intimate venue that is actually a converted temple from years gone by. The lighting is sensational as can be seen in the myriad of photos. The sound system, while certainly loud enough, was a touch distorted in both the base and treble ranges. I was there for a wedding last nite. The downstairs area hosts the ceremony, and the combo of the lighting and decor lend to a stunning event. The cocktail portion is moved to the 2nd floor u-shaped balcony which offers a nice overview of below as they set up the lower room for the main reception. The cocktail area gets a little tight and movement isn't the easiest, but it works well enough. The bartenders worked extremely slowly and my confidence in their drink knowledge is lacking. We returned to the lower room for the reception. The variation in lighting is stellar. The servers were friendly and attentive--except for the bartenders who didn't seem so psyched... I'm not sure if ill ever return to this diamond in the rough, but given the opportunity, I'd be comping at the bit. read more

I was here for the first time recently for an event, and approaching this place at night is seeing a beacon in the dark. Lit up in bright blue and purple lights, this neon-lit church is like the scene of a religious rave. A great venue with lots of space to stand and mingle and plenty of room for seating. There's also a mezzanine with bleachers perfect for escaping the party for some people-watching or a quiet chat. The museum is on the top floor but, to my dismay, was closed off during the event. The acoustics were great and I'm kicking myself for skipping out on concerts being hosted here. A gem of the Lower East Side that every New Yorker ought to see for him- or herself. read more

The pictures might look nice - but run away from this one. Last year the buildings department shut their doors after the balcony floor nearly fell in (look it up) - our event was a month later - and they would not give us back our money! And we were not the only ones. DO NOT WORK WITH THESE PEOPLE - they might tell you they're back up & running, etc. - but they are not honest. RUN AWAY from this venue. I called to set up an appoint to look at this space for my wedding, even called to confirm the appointment. I traveled from the east end of long island to see what look at this space. The pictures I saw online were simply breathtaking. When I arrived at Angel Orensanz I was ushered in by the very same man I spoke with on the phone. I told the gentleman, Al, that I had an appointment with the event space coordinator Maria. For some odd reason they had no recollection of me ever calling or making an appointment. After a complete run around from Al he told me that Maria wasn't even there! After 3 failed attempts to call her Al said that she was at a conference and would be back by 4pm (it was 2 at this point) I left my contact information with Al and he assured me that Maria would see us at 4 as soon as she returned that day. Oh... I forgot to mention that I had to give my information to him THREE SEPARATE TIMES as he misplaced it every time. By 4:30 i still had no call from Maria, no text and no email so I took it upon myself to go back to Angel Orensanz. Guess what?? She still was unavailable. Now almost 2 weeks have passed and I still have not been contacted by anyone. I guess this venue does so well that they don't need our business. From what I saw this venue needs a TON of work. No wonder they were shut down a while back for unsafe conditions. The place needs a lot of sprucing up. It may be pretty in pictures but do not be fooled. The bathrooms are extremely small (2 stalls for men & 2 stalls for women) not ideal for a venue that claims they can fit 230+. Overall i am so very disappointed and even if I was called today I would not book this venue based upon the extreme disregard and unprofessionalism of the staff. If this is how they handle a simple appointment to book the venue I would hate to see how the rest of the planning process would be with them. read more

Angel Orensanz is an amazing event space. A real lower east side institution that has survived the test of gentrification. Clearly they are bastions of learning to adapt by making a beautiful, functional and accommodating place in a world of over priced living and retail spaces. I have been working in A.O. for years on various movie and television shows and watched it grow from sketchy structure that would make OSHA cringe to a space that is clean and unique. It is a former synagogue, rich with Lower East Side history from the immigrant community and more recent art scene. It also has an amazing built in light show which can be custom made with lots of options all ready to go. I have never hosted and event here but I can tell they are accommodating and have all of the necessary materials to put on the event of your dreams. There is a lot of space here, lots of bathrooms and rooms, a stage, place for staging, lighting board and a kitchen space including dishwashing. Built in power (Camloc out-limited to 100amps a leg.) The only problem is the load in is kind of a pain. No elevator. Also hard to run cable in except for the front door or one second floor window. read more

WARNING - DO NOT BOOK THIS VENUE! I fell in love with the space, planned a dream wedding here and when they had structural issues, they went silent. They actually didn't return e-mails or phone calls to let us know the status for weeks. I was going on the NYC Department of Buildings site to find out if I would actually be able to host the event (invites had gone out and 200 people from around the world were coming). I understand the situation was unpredictable (although likely to be blamed on poor maintenance, incompetent staff and an overall lack of attention to detail), but they couldn't possibly have handled it any worse. After a month of trying desperately to get an answer, I was told they would be closed and my wedding had to be cancelled. They weren't apologetic and even worse months later they STILL haven't refunded my deposit. I was told "we don't have the money" to return the deposit. Well, that is interesting because when I stopped in to the venue I found Maria and the others are working there, so presumably the thousands of dollars I (and countless other brides and event organizers) is being used to cover payroll for people sitting there doing nothing. Meanwhile I've had to take on so many expenses with swapping venues a couple months before the big day (most places book over a year out) the pricetag of my wedding has nearly doubled!!! To think they did this not only to me but countless others just makes me sick. This place should be shut down permanently. It is a crumbling structure that could have easily killed people when the support columns started 'swaying' (google it to find out what happened). However, the real reason this venue should be close its doors forever is because it is run by a group of crooks. read more
