It being such a hot summer day, checking out the art at the Gagosian was a doubly great idea. My initial thought was the Picasso exhibit at the location to the west of Central Park, but a friend told me about the Takashi Murakami Japonisme exhibit at the Gagosian which was near the Genesis House. Perfect! The Gagosian gallery area wasn't huge, but held a lot of pieces, both large and small. The staff encouraged me to not get too close, in order to protect the artwork, but I was still able to see the textures and to locate the little fun surprises hidden in the paintings. This was a great exhibit for even those who are not normally into art. read more

Gagosian featured the striking paintingd of Takashi Murakami. He uses a very distinct traditional Japanese art in the shown work. Later he progressed to brightly colored pop art. He is well known for what he created called as Superflat art movement. Street and lot parking. read more

Did you know that there are three Gagosian art galleries? Two I have been two in a span of two days. The third one is undergoing renovations. Today I went to the gallery on West 21st Street to view the Takashi Murakami exhibit. The paintings, both large and small, were infused in color and rich detail. It was enjoyable and I looked at several paintings with delight. The famous fish poster is being sold for $100. It wouldn't fit in my apartment but I can visit Gagosian and see this fine exhibit till July 11th. The front desk kindly kept my backpack so I could go around unfettered. Water bottles are to be put in bags before viewing. There were many visitors here today especially Asians. read more

One of the free things to do in the Chelsea neighborhood is to get a glimpse on what's new at this gallery. It's quite interesting what we have seen today at this location together as well at 24 th st. A huge gallery I say to fit two huge sculpture exhibit item. I am not into sculptures, I prefer paintings but hey , it's free to roam around this gallery. I can imagine whenever they held gala night on this place! Must be awesome. Is it worth coming in ? I flew in to see the Avedon 100 exhibit. It was beautifully displayed and the care taken to select the proper lighting, location and organization was impressive. What was truly appalling was the petty and poorly trained staff that could not be bothered to answer simple questions (where are the closest restrooms, what is the next exhibit, etc). So much time is spent worrying about backpacks, purses and standing too close to exhibits that it is almost comical. Perhaps management could remind the staff that they are not the artists nor are they the patrons that support the arts (in most cases) but instead employees who are there to PROMOTE the enjoyment of the arts and culture. Do not judge your patrons by appearance and treat everyone with kindness and respect. read more

Another one of my favorite galleries. This location is smaller than the others but always has great exhibits set up. Security inside as well as staff on handy. Face mask required but no proof of vaccine needed. Nice space between visitors and nice size crowd read more

exhibition: the shows here are great and the gallery is spacious, lots of large scale installations are on view here. service: "camera phone only", but they didn't mention that anywhere in the gallery. So I was very confused when I was approached by the security guard while trying to take a photo with my another camera. If you didn't specify the rule in the first place (e.g. write it on the door or tell us before entering), then that is your problem, not the visitors' problem, you cannot just come to stop us when you see us trying to "violate" your "rule". Worse still, what he said to me at first is "iPhone only" (I do use iPhone but why are Android users not allowed to take photos?), later on he said "camera phone only", I do think he needs some serious training to be honest. Later on, I can feel the security guard spent more of his attention on me as if I was trying to do sth bad. I later on took some pictures with my iPhone and he came to me and said "so you do have an iPhone", I really don't know what to reply, I do have a camera phone, so what? Why are you still trying to blame me on this camera phone thing, it's not like I intentionally take photo with my other camera knowing that it is not allowed, can you just give me a break? Really the most passive aggressive gallery security guard I've ever encountered. He cannot even leave me alone when I exited the gallery and flipped through their catalogue. I really cannot read anything knowing that he was there looking in my direction. All in all, the show was still great, but the experience could've been better. read more

Currently showing a hefty installation by Richard Serra: "NJ-1". Visitors of the renovated SFMOMA will immediately notice similarities with his installation there, titled "Sequence". Like the one in SF, this structure is meant to be walked through as well as around. Walk all the way through in one direction, and then back in the other. Marvel at the way the sky's light plays upon the walls that cast their shadows to the floor, and the sensations that you might experience as the structure opens and closes around you. Look up and down, close and from afar. Wonder at the velvety orange surface upon first sight, only to see its ruggedness up close. This extremely large room is well suited for displaying something massive like Serra's sculpture currently on display, and has a skylight that offers some interesting lighting to the area, although I thought the track lighting used with "Sequence" in SF allowed for more fun plays of light on the floor. The guards here are friendlier than the one on 24th, and as usual, free entrance, woot. read more

Group of friends and I randomly stopped by here during a break in-between events at the nearby pier, and was pleasantly surprised to find art galleries open to guests close to the water. Simple, and the staff is unobtrusive unless you want a lesson in the art history. It's a mostly private art-lovers gallery here. I'm impressed at the displays, but like Ligaya T. noted, some of the galleries seemed... out of place. Not that I'm an art expert, by any means, but our group noticed it. read more

The Picasso exhibit was amazing - one of the largest free collections I have ever seen in one place and better than the Chelsea Art Museum hands down. Featuring the later works of Picasso rarely seen outside of private collections, a true treat. A friendly and knowledgable staff compliments the art. read more

How many Gagosian galleries does it take to screw in a lightbulb? My gawd. I went to the wrong one the first time, looking for Picasso, who I don't always like that much. But this exhibit was awesome. There are two I wanted to have for myself, could I afford it. I took out my ipod touch to make a note of the names, and the security guard, in broken English, tried to tell me to put it away. "Please, no, put away" "Why?" "No." "Why?" "No photo, please" "It isn't a camera, see?" Then he walked away. I made my notes, then left. Of course, I deleted my notes, and have no idea what the names of those paintings are, but the exhibit was nice. oh, and it was FREE! read more

Go check Henry Moore's large scale sculpture before it's gone. Size impacts, and this time, I felt so little next to these giant sculptures. The Gagossian gallery once again does not disappoint me, not event a bit. Everytime is always a wonder to come check these great artists. read more

On my last visit to this location of Gagosian Gallery in October the best thing was the cables. They were draped across the floor in long, slender coils that got smaller and accumulated in little piles near the display equipment. Very nice. The videos they were powering, not so much. They were by Douglas Gordon and were shot in the Scottish highlands: views of a lone grand piano in the hills, set on fire and burning. I had no intention on visiting this gallery. I came here for my school project and I was fascinated. The steel sculpture by Richard Serra is amazing! I had never seen anything like this before. I could not take pictures, since I wasn't allowed to. But its worth a visit. read more

I don't know why I would need to review the Gagosian galleries. Everyone knows they are one of the best to bring in blue chip artists. The spaces are huge and viewing everything is always relaxing. The staff is always hospitable. Unlike smaller galleries that are trying to prove themselves, Gagosian galleries knows their top rank and do not act arrogant. Come in, look at art, enjoy. read more

I just got done walking through Richard Serra's 'Inside Out' sculpture at Gagosian. This sculpture is huge enough to walk through and made of steal. When entering the gallery, the colossal structure greats you and you enter it. The piece begins as a long and narrow pathway that leads further into itself.The narrow hallways dip and wanes at different vertical points within the wall. This played with my equilibrium and made me feel disorientated and slightly dizzy, while walking through. After you've made your way into the maze, created by the massive sculpture, you come across elliptical spaces within it. Winding through you find your self on both the convex and concave sides of the ellipse. Each two different spaces with two very different psychologies. One closed in and trapped the other free and spacious. read more
