First of all I am a "dog person" but have always been appreciative of cats. Especially polydactyl (Hemmingway) cats. So I searched. That's when I found Kalamazoo Animal Rescue and this beautiful young Domestic Short-haired black & white Tuxedo polydactyl female. We were put in touch with Suzanne A. Who turned out to be a fantastic representative of KAR. I appreciated the seriousness of the interview questions. When my wife & I met Elizabeth it was an instant connection. You can tell the excellent care "Lizzie" received as a foster cat in the care of Suzanne. It's been close to 9 months now since we adopted Elizabeth. What joy, love & happiness Lizzie has brought into our home. She has become the center of attention. I have shook up alot of family & friends who now have to think of me as that "Cat Dude". I can't completely express my gratitude for KAR & Suzanne. I highly recommend KAR if you are a responsible pet owner. Lizzie was spayed, shots up to date & chipped. Then to top it off they never even called me to tell me they messed up.... what kind of place operates like this, very unorganized, cluster mess! very unprofessional and inconsiderate! DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL! This isn't the first time they've messed up with handling my dogs.

This review is for a spay appointment we had in January, 2021. What a way to start the new year! First, the new building! It looks so beautiful from the outside. Clean, well-designed, and you can tell that it is them from the enormous dog statue inside! :) For pandemic spay appointments, you call in and reserve a spot on the calendar when they open the schedule for new bookings. I had to wait over an hour on the phone, but that is because they were closed for almost 2 months, I believe, because of the move. The phone staff were incredibly patient and kind. We drove up on the day of Rosencrantz's appointment, as directed. We waited in line while staff went car to car and ascertained who we were, and put an identifier on our car under the windshield wiper. We filled out the paperwork. Note: Everyone must be masked, and the cat had to be in a hard-sided carrier, per their emailed instructions. The staff members were masked and I felt safe in conversing with them. Then your car gets to the front of the line, and you hand over the carrier. Poor Rosencrantz was so unsure of what was going on! But I digress. At 4-4:30, you drive back and wait in line to pick up your pet. When we were able to get R, the staff member delivering her was very kind and patient with his time, while we asked questions and he gave specific directions. One thing that would have been good to put on the original directions is to quarantine them to a small room for a while, once you get home, and to have fresh litter. Upon reflection, that makes TOTAL sense, but sometimes we don't think ahead. The price was SO reasonable: $40 for a spay, and $20 for 2 vaccines. That price is much appreciated. It is able to be so low because of grants and other funding (thank you!). In all of our interactions with staff, everyone was SO kind and caring. I never felt rushed or had an unanswered question. Highly recommended!

I didn't think the people in the parking lot waiting for the place to open were very polite. I was the 2nd car in the lot but other people ran in front of me to check in so I became #4 (not the fault of the Humane Society!). After you check in you go get your dog, but you have to wait until the person in front of you has checked their dog in before you go. Which was kind of a problem in the freezing cold. Especially since I didn't want to lose my spot again to everyone else that was jumpy! My dog was fine after the surgery. She was drugged up so very lethargic but overall everything with the surgery went well. The staff was very nice and friendly. They were talking to the dogs and the people. I wish they would just have a better system to drop off that could be less of a run for it method!

I'm writing it out of a great feeling of resentment because I believe that I was fed bold-faced lies by the staff in order to push me toward an adoption. The sign on the window said that the cat I was considering was a five year old male. On the Saturday before our adoption, we asked a staff member of the cat's medical history. We were told that the cat had been very timid and was losing some weight, and that it had a distended stomach possibly from worms. That wasn't anything we couldn't handle so we decided to adopt. We wanted a 5 year old male because we had a cat and the two would complement each other well. When we sat down to sign the papers, though, that's when the truth started to come out. At least partial truths. Apparently, the cat had no teeth. We asked why, and they had no answers. It also had a heart murmur. I know the former staff member INTENTIONALLY left this out, because the distended stomach was there with this information. She just straight up left it out! We still went through with the paperwork, and at the end, they informed us that the cat was actually 7 years old. All of these things collectively should have told me to cut and run, but in the end the cat needed a good home, so we followed through with the adoption. A few days later, we took the cat to a vet. The vet informed us that actually the cat was more like 10 years old.... oh, and it was also a girl! So we went from a 5 year old male, to a seven year old male, to a ten year old female. CAHS either has no idea what they're doing, or they are purposely handing out false information in order to get pets adopted, which I'm certain is illegal. I likely won't pursue legal action because I'm sure no one will care, and I obviously will love and care for the pet that I've adopted. But folks should be aware of what's going on here, and be prepared for some deceit. CAHS should face some accountability.

It said to adopt your lucky charm today for only $17.00. So, we stopped to look. It was on ST. PATRICKS day. First dog they brought in , was a sister to the one that caught our eye. She gravitated right away to my husband! Although, we should have checked out a few dogs before deciding, we said yes to adopting her! far from perfect match. If there is such a thing called an alpha personality. She definitely tries to be such. She (Roxy) is improving as time goes on. She is a loving dog , but has times of having too high of energy. Asked for a cat friendly dog. She turned out ok in that regards, as long as we work out her sometimes too high of energy level. The workers, that were there, were nice and organized setting up vet, spaying and our pick up date!

I love cats and follow a lot of local cat rescues on social media so I can see photos of cute cats…read more I saw that Second Chance Cats of West Michigan was having a party for their 4th anniversary so Nate and I stopped by with some cans to donate. The facility is pretty large and has three rooms for the cats, but they also have many cats in foster homes. We got a tour from a friendly volunteer who introduced us to all the cats and let us hang out with the kittens. Since it was their anniversary party, they also had food and refreshments. We loved seeing all the cute cats and most were very friendly, although some were (understandably) napping. They take donations throughout the year, so I'm planning on saving up more cans to drop off. They also host events and you can visit them during their open hours on the weekends. They do have a suggested donation of $10 for visiting, which I think is really reasonable for the good work they are doing for these cute furry friends!

Staff is very friendly and willing to help without being overbearing. You can bring your fur baby with you to shop around which is always such a joy to expose them to life outside of the house in a safe and welcoming environment. They also offer grooming services (I have not used them so I can't speak further on any details regarding that) !
