Everyone we met was super nice and cared about finding the perfect family for the puppy, without being off putting. We brought our reactive 5 yr old dog for a meet and greet. First we had them on opposite sides of the fence on leash. Once that went well, we moved our dog inside the fence, still of leash. Once that went well, we took a short walk together. After that, we went back to an exam room(they are a vet too) and got them both drinks. We filled out the final paperwork and took him home. What set them apart were the things they gave us to make the transition easier for the puppy- dog bed from his foster and crate, balance of his bag of food so we can transition, toys, and starter doses of flea/tic/heartworm meds. She gravitated right away to my husband! Although, we should have checked out a few dogs before deciding, we said yes to adopting her! far from perfect match. If there is such a thing called an alpha personality. She definitely tries to be such. She (Roxy) is improving as time goes on. She is a loving dog , but has times of having too high of energy. Asked for a cat friendly dog. She turned out ok in that regards, as long as we work out her sometimes too high of energy level. The workers, that were there, were nice and organized setting up vet, spaying and our pick up date!

They continue to take in and take wonderful care of the abandoned cat and dog population. I am continually amazed at their dedication. Even when abuse and criticism is constantly being thrown at them. The work that they do at this non profit, is amazing. Day in and day out, they show up. They accept these special beings, even when the reason for giving them up seems trivial. They receive animals who have gone through unimaginable abuse and some who lived a beautiful life, but the owners were done with them. Imagine, for a minute, that this is your job day in and day out. Giving these souls the best period of their lives. Giving of themselves until they have nothing left and then keep giving. The job of the employees and volunteers at HSSCM is NOT to place as many animals in homes as quickly as possible. YES, there are tons of animals that need homes. However, they are making sure they go to the right homes, with low chance of returning to the shelter. They use expertise and the repetitive knowledge that they gain by being there every day. You want a tiny kitten because they are cute, but you are never home? Not a great fit. You want a German Shepherd because they are sweet and beautiful, but you have kids and a full time job. Not a great fit, they are a working breed and will find a way to stay busy. You want a mix breed Great Pyrenees? No fence and no experience with the breed? Not a good fit. Even with a fence, they can jump it (even 5ft). These animals are returned day in and day out. They take them back with open arms and hearts, because it's their mission to find them the best home. I can't help but be upset at the complaints. They have a beautiful atrium for the cats, WITH A REAL TREE! The dogs have a beautiful place to go for walks. None of this is free. They work hard to get donations. They take the abuse and threats that are thrown their way and keep doing the job. They live on very little pay and almost zero appreciation. If you are denied an adoption, buck up. Read up on the instances of animal abuse by people who continually adopt from shelters that don't have the ability to be discerning. Be glad that they care so much. Volunteer your time. Help them bring in donations. I have no skin in this game, really. Other than the fact that I have spent time talking to the employees and volunteers. I know the dedication that is involved. Also, I truly love animals. I only want what is best for THEM and not me. PS - the Mutt Market was amazing. The crafts were awesome!!

This is the worst and i mean worst place for anyone to either take your animals to. I emailed to…read moresee about if they would put my 11 year old cat down because he urinates everywhere and i have done everything to correct him and have several cat litter boxes that are changed every week and then i get an email this morning from Kathleen and told me that we do not put down any animals. Then she said that you need a real reason not just urinating on your porch and also said that a vet clinic will not even put the cat down either because of that. With that said i have tried every option even trying to get him to a new home which no one would even response back to me and trying to break the cat from urinating everywhere because of my mother in law one time feeding the outside cats that go neighbor house to neighbor house this cat saw her feeding them and now i can even get him to break that kind of issue. One time i called there to see even if they would take him. They told me NO but yet they want everyone to donate food and other stuff to them. I had a dog there and had then give him shots and an operation so he could not breed any females. That was years ago and they mad the wife really angry towards them. I was not there because i was working at that time. This place has really gotten worse.

I found a cat I liked and asked about him. I was told he needed to see vet first. I thought ok, then asked when he will be available. In a few days was the best I could get out if her. I then asked to adopt him now and pay all necessary fees etc. and I would pick him up when ready. I was told no. First come first served she replied in an imperious manner. I said I am first why can't I arrange adoption now. I could tell she just wanted to get rid of me and just said "NO!!!" And dismissed me. I asked.if I could be called or emailed when he is available. Again a big fat NO. Just look on our site. Firstly, why can't a pet be adopted prior to vet procedure, if the applicant is willing to wait and pay all fees ahead if time? Secondly, they need to find a more courteous person to deal with the public. These animals are not her personal property and she is not god.

They offered a "living room" setting with toys so we could watch the puppies play. This is a large facility and I can only imagine the complexity of managing such an operation. Our experience was the owners took a great deal of time at check out to ensure we were fully informed about all aspects of ownership (vet check, registration, feeding, potential for deworming, etc). Our veterinarian was very complimentary of our puppies health. There was a need to treat for worms but we expected that. The owners were very nice and caring. Our experience was positive and we would recommend evaluating this business for your own needs. We love our puppy. We are retired and she has given us hours of smiles and laughter. We have had her 3 weeks and every day is something new and energizing.

First of all I am a "dog person" but have always been appreciative of cats. Especially polydactyl (Hemmingway) cats. So I searched. That's when I found Kalamazoo Animal Rescue and this beautiful young Domestic Short-haired black & white Tuxedo polydactyl female. We were put in touch with Suzanne A. Who turned out to be a fantastic representative of KAR. I appreciated the seriousness of the interview questions. When my wife & I met Elizabeth it was an instant connection. You can tell the excellent care "Lizzie" received as a foster cat in the care of Suzanne. It's been close to 9 months now since we adopted Elizabeth. What joy, love & happiness Lizzie has brought into our home. She has become the center of attention. I have shook up alot of family & friends who now have to think of me as that "Cat Dude". I can't completely express my gratitude for KAR & Suzanne. I highly recommend KAR if you are a responsible pet owner. Lizzie was spayed, shots up to date & chipped.
