Driver's are not helpful especially if you are not from the area and have no clue about where to exit and direction to go. It's possible that they're new Driver's and don't know the route. Buses were clean and the drivers were very polite. Oddly, half of them were new drivers and did not necessarily know the area outside their route. For visitors to Ann Arbor, the public transportation system is almost certainly sufficient enough to render the renting of a car unnecessary. Only on Sundays are the schedules much reduced. The route system is extensive and provides good coverage of the entire area in and around the city. The cost is minimal and free transfers are provided upon request when boarding. There are also longer distance routes to neighboring communities throughout the region. One of these ExpressRide routes provides transportation 27km west of Ann Arbor to the quaint little town of Chelsea. Another ExpressRide route provides transportation to the suburban township of Canton, 26km to the east of Ann Arbor. From what I experienced, the buses were always reasonably clean and ran on schedule. I originally gave 3 stars, but later found that the Michigan Flyer AirRide shuttle bus service to DTW airport and to Michigan State University are provided in conjunction with AATA as well. The drivers seem to think they doing us a favor but without the riders they wouldn't have a job driving the AATA bus. So, I guess I could say we doing them a favor by helping them keep their job. I have been at the YTC waiting while my bus is parked without a driver. Waited for a good 10-15 minutes for the driver to come strolling out of the YTC building late with the facial expression of not caring that they late and holding the paying customers up. It would be different if they late cause of traffic or something but they was just sitting in lobby chat chatting. Another driver was late standing outside smoking and chatting. GOT TO DO BETTER. Maybe customer satisfaction cards need to be available for customer to complete. The mobile site (mobile.aata.org) is so useful for checking if your bus is on time or how long it's running late. It has saved me countless hours of waiting out in the cold! I do wish that the 609 ran just *one* more bus later on in the morning, but it is pretty convenient as-is for anyone who needs to travel to/from the West Side (or Dexter) and works a 9-5 or 8-4. read more

I occasionally get public transportation envy. When I visit Chicago and ride the El and the Metra, when I visit SF and ride BART & MUNI, and most recently when in Atlanta. Southeastern Michigan is not necessarily known for our public transit options. We are, after all, home of the Motor City and highways named after both Ford and Chrysler. But, I have to say that the AATA is generally a pretty positive (sometimes surprisingly so). It's usually close to on-time, and most of the time you can also use your phone or their website to track the exact location of buses. Coverage is pretty darn good, I just wish it ran later at night and that certain routes ran on the weekends. However, I understand that there probably isn't the volume of ridership that would make that viable. So, it's understandable, and I'm thankful for what it is. Easy, cheap, and pretty reliable. Still, I can dream of more integrated regional transit, and I do, oh I do. read more

However, it is not great and I have found myself consistently wondering how a town with such a high tax revenue can't get their buses right? -If rainy or snowing, consistently 10 minutes late. Sometimes 20. -Website is down and the track your bus system never works. -for a while they had a feature where it tells you what stop your bus is at, but unless you are an Ann Arbor wizard, I have no idea where the intersection of 6th and tahqumennon is! -Drivers have given me sass before for no particular reason. read more

I've lived in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area for more than 10 years but only rode "The Ride" for the first time within the last month. Part of the reason I've avoided using it is that going from the far east side of Ypsilanti to anywhere downtown Ann Arbor takes a minimum of one change of bus and a minimum 1.5-hour time committment, while I can make the same trip in my car in 25 minutes. However, my car was in for repairs in a shop off Carpenter Road recently, and I decided to give the bus a try instead of trying to arrange to have a friend get me there. The bus arrived at my pickup spot within about 2-3 minutes of when the online schedule said it would be there, and when I changed buses in downtown Ypsi, the next bus was also very close to on time as well. Additionally, the driver in the first bus was extremely helpful when I told him it was my first ride on the bus and he went out of my way when I got off his bus to make sure I knew where to wait for the next bus and told me what time it was expected to arrive. Overall, I had a good transportation experience for $1.50. read more

Mass transit almost doesn't exist in the midwest, so it would be unfair to compare Ann Arbor's mass transit system to the systems in bigger cities, where you can stand on the corner and catch a bus every five minutes. Compared to that experience, AATA will be disappointing; but when you compare it to walking, it looks a heck of a lot better. Just remember to wear your Midwest Perspective Glasses. If you plan to travel around town, the best thing to do is pick up a bus schedule, which will tell you the times for every stop on every bus line. If you time your trip right, you won't have to sit at the bus stop waiting a long time for the bus to show up. It costs a dollar to ride the bus, and they haven't figured out how to give change, but if you want to put a five-dollar or ten-dollar bill in the hopper, I'm sure they would take it. If you happen to be out late, and find that you can no longer drive safely, AATA offers a Night Ride cab service, that will take you anywhere within the city limits for $5. The shared cab service begins after the bus lines stop running, so don't despair if you miss the last bus--unless you live outside the city. AATA buses tend to be crowded, stuffy and noisy. I lost a really nice glove as I was getting off the 4 bus a couple of years ago, and I think it is still out there somewhere, riding around the city and looking for me. read more

The AATA has a deal with the University of Michigan so that peeps with a student ID can ride for free, and not just to and from class. You can go all the way to Ypsi for some Ugly Mug love if you want, or grab some vegan chocolate cake at Whole Foods. In a perfect world, the buses would run later and more often, but it would also be a waste of energy and gas because there's not enough of a metropolis here in Ann Arbor to inspire that kind of commuting. For the midwest, this is a really pleasant and relatively well-planned public transportation system. I use it every day to commute Ypsi-Ann Arbor. It's so practical! And free for UM ID card holders! The buses are kept up, it feels safe and is usually on time or close to--you can track the buses via the website to see if yours is late. I *do* wish they ran some of the heavily used routes (like the 4 running between AA-Ypsi) a bit later--maybe keep it running until midnight or 1? This is the worst public transit of any city I have ever lived in. The buses are constantly 10-20 minutes late and this has been a problem for at least 4 years. At least around Ann Arbor and UM, this is a painfully unreliable means of transportation. You would think there would be improvements in the system considering it has had this bad reputation for so many years, but apparently the management doesn't actually ride the bus to realize how utterly unreliable the bus system is. The "bus tracking" web site from The Ride is painfully inaccurate and has such a delayed refresh time that it is useless to try and time the bus arrival. I take the 12A every day and it is always on time. The hours could be extended a bit, but I understand that Ann Arbor is a small town. The buses are clean, the drivers are friendly, and the routes take me where I need to go. Ever since May of this year their expanded service has really help me out. I live in Ypsi and have 4-8 buses an hour most days going to Ann Arbor and back. Pretty much always on time and clean. And flavorful peps too. So much better than driving if I don't need a car at work. read more

It is awesome that the buses are free for students. They are practical, they're everywhere, and they usually make your life easier. The only thing I am disappointed about is HUGE delays when it snows (up to 40 minute delays?! 40 minutes of waiting out in the cold?) and their customer service. It is just awful. I lost my ID on the bus and when I got to the office to pick it up, they said the 'may have mailed it back to the university'. That secretary literally laughed at me and told ME that I had lost it 2 weeks ago (false) and that they usually mail IDs back to the U by then. They couldn't find it in the office and had no idea where it was. I waited a month and I got nothing in the mail, so I called them again ... when that same rude secretary told me that my ID was in the office, that I could pick it up the next day, and then she hung up on me. I am pretty dissatisfied with the actual office and the people working in there. Really rude, disrespectful, and really inconvenienced me for a month! But the bus drivers and the bus schedules are pretty good. read more

They call this AATA public transportation but it cannot transport at all. The buses are always late and they are very rare. Plus they have very limited buses in weekends. I think they are saying to people who do not have a car that "stay at home and do not go around. you do not have the right to go anywhere since you do not have a car". That is what I understand from the "public transportation" here. I think the US has to learn from Europe about the ABC of public transportation.The system here in the US make people to own a car immediately which is not good for world at all -but they do not care about the world-. I take the bus a lot and have done so since moving to Ann Arbor back in 2006. The buses are clean and the drivers are usually very friendly and helpful. I've ridden city buses elsewhere and AATA buses are definitely cleaner and I feel more comfortable on them. Also, I love that transfers here and free and so are the EMU shuttles and the connecting U of M buses. The only real improvements I would like to see are more weekend service and more service for the Route 6 bus since it is an Ann Arbor to Ypsilanti bus having it run every fifteen minutes vs every half hour would be terrific! read more

While this service provides the lone low cost public transportation in the city, the AATA is far from efficient, and not the best public low cost form of travel in the city. Both on the weekends, holidays, and after 10pm, and Saturday after 5pm??? Public low cost transit from Ypsilanti to Ann Arbor is not available. If you have to work on a holiday, after 10pm (mostly severs and restaurant employees) on a weekday, or weekend during any evening and your budget doesn't have room for nightly cab fare, you're out luck. This puts those without the means at a large disadvantage in this heavily competitive job market. The AATA has a surplus of countless millions yet refuses to find ways to make transportation easier to those whom need it the most. Where expansion and improvement has come to the system? Through various routes to University Hospitals and other buildings. If this Ann Arbor transit system is ever to make the impact other transit systems around the country have made they will look at whom they are most frequently serving, those most need of their services; To begin to maybe, possible look at how best to bring speed and efficiency to their lives through transit around Washtenaw county. My rating is really for the Wave bus in Western Washtenaw County public transportation system. Their website states *Note: These times are the earliest pick-up times. Riders may encounter up to 15 minute delays due to traffic or weather conditions. I understand about the later times but twice my kids have been to the bus stop a few minutes early to find that the nus has already been and gone. The only problem with this is the next bus is not for 2 hours and my kids have missed 2 days of school because the bus has shown up as early as 26 minutes early that I caught. Now my kids have to show up a half an hour before the posted time online. Wasting time that could be spent doing something else. Who is responsible for this bus line? I have been using the ride for 9 months now and I can say that I have never had a bus arrive within 15 minutes of the promised arrival time. Most of the time, 3 buses are meant to have passed before one actually passes me. It is honestly the worst public transportation system that I have ever used and does not seem to take into consideration that people are waiting out in the sleet and snow for 30 min + to get on a bus that they are paying way too much for. read more
