It seems most folks leaving reviews here were either renters or first time kayakers - congrats on finding a great place ! I'm just dropping a note to voice my support for ACK as a great shop for even more experienced paddlers and sea kayakers. Dave has been in the industry since the Spring River days and probably has more time on the water than a lot of his customers have been alive (although, who knows if he actually has time for paddling anymore). Over the years I've bought a kayak, some replacement parts and materials for another one, clothing, gear, paddles ... the list goes on. When I needed a replacement part he gladly took on the challenge of talking to to the manufacturer and figuring out the correct part and getting it in (and this is not always easy if you have an older boat ! ) Dave's super chill, super nice, and runs a great shop - as he says "every day is demo day" ... if you're shopping for a boat, he'll put you on the water and let you demo it. A couple times a year he has reps in for bigger demo days with new models. And check this out - he purchases new boats every year as rentals so you're always riding on current tech, and then sells them off each year. He also really knows what he's talking about, even down to the materials and manufacturing technologies in some instances, and really works to put you in the best boat for you. It's not just Dave either, many of his staff are serious kayakers (and members of the local club, for instance) and have thousands of miles under their hulls. His selection of kayaks can't be touched by local box stores, even the more basic rec boats he carries, and he has a selection of supplemental gear (ie paddles, lights, etc) that are higher end than anything I've seen in chain stores. The Annapolis Canoe & Kayak is a great place to rent boats. We rented a tandem kayak for $30/hr. I guess the price is reasonable for this area. The kayak was in great condition and they will adjust it to your height. We probably returned 15-20 minutes late, but the guy did not mind. Everyone here is so chill and friendly. I highly recommend renting from here. There is no boundary for where you can take the kayak. If you feel adventurous and energetic, head toward the bay as far as you can! They also sell shirts and boating-related knick knacks. They have limited parking out front, but we had no trouble parking here on a Sunday afternoon. read more

The best way to see the Chesapeake, hands down, is in a kayak. It's silent, it's low impact and low maintenance, and best of all...it's human powered. The area has quite a few outdoor sporting good sources available, but for sheer knowledge on the art of human powered water travel, you can't find a place more knowledgeable and friendly than Annapolis Canoe and Kayak (formerly Springriver Kayak). I'm a hardcore enthusiast, but the owner and staff of AC&K treats EVERYONE that comes looking to paddle, from the newbie to those of us with permanently salt-water pruned fingers, with respect and a willingness to share their extensive knowledge of watercraft, portage, safety, and most importantly, where to paddle. They are a wealth of information in this soggy but fun activity. The store carries a plethora of boats...many of which can be demo'ed off the dock directly across from the Naval Academy on Spa Creek. There are almost too many craft to choose from, but the staff can help guide you depending on how much paddling you want to do, and where you want to go. And if you're not quite ready to dive into the sport just yet, rentals are also available for both on site, if you want to paddle around Spa Creek, or offsite...if you plan on taking a paddling vacation. The bonus to AC&K...Cocoa, the Chocolate Lab. She's the owner's big, beautiful girl and she usually hangs around the yard. Did not have time to shop around for a better price, but seemed reasonable. Never had a more pleasant renting experience in my life whether or be cars boats or gear etc. Quick friendly service and no BS. Could not believe how quickly we went from parking to in a kayak. All in all we probably had the boat for an hour and 15 min but there we're no attempts to complain about it or get more cash out of us. Boat was in great clean shape. everyone else we saw seemed to be having a great time too. paid 30 bucks for a double kayak for an "hour" as I write I realize Priscilla just wrote all the exact same things ..so I'll make it quick: good place...head for the bay! was way cool to feel out in the open water versus sticking right in town by all the docks. read more

I came down to Annapolis Canoe & Kayak mostly because they had a Groupon deal and I'm a sucker for paddling. The location is great - street parking isn't difficult to find and the neighborhood is lovely. You set off into Spa Creek when you embark in the boats, which is lined with boats and homes and trees with green herons. The staff both times I've been there has been good-humored and easy going. We had our choice of sit inside or sit on top, which is great, and they didn't worry about a long tutorial since we'd before indicated we paddled pretty often. You do have to hop into the boats from the docking square rather than slide in with a ramp, etc., which is always fun for that fleeting moment where you feel like you're going to fall in and die. I do wish we had paddled out toward the Severn and the Bay rather than into the dead-ends of houses up the creek, but that will have to be next time. The paddle was pleasant, but you're steering around sailboats and looking at mostly houses. I was that was something they covered when we asked which way to go. read more

I've visited Annapolis Canoe and Kayak twice to rent paddleboards and both experiences were absolutely lovely. The first time they let me and my sister have intermediate boards even though it was our first time out - ever. They gave us a brief introduction and we were on our way up Spa Creek for some lovely views! The last time I went, about two weeks ago, it was a lot more crowded. They gave us a call when they had boards available for us and even held them for us as we finished lunch. We didn't have watches and were about 25 minutes late past our rental time and they didn't charge us any extra. Overall, great paddleboards for renting and extremely friendly service! read more

What a great way to get onto the water! Annapolis Canoe and Kayak got us situated in our tandem kayak and we were off exploring Spa Creek in no time. Going down and up the Creek was a great way to see some beautiful boats and houses while getting sun and light exercise. The hour long rental was the perfect amount of time to explore, not feeling rushed but also not over extending ourselves but paddling for too long. The staff here have been very friendly. We've gone twice now and certainly plan to keep this adventure on heavy rotation when day tripping in Annapolis. This store is located in a great place. Accessibility from everywhere. It's close to so many restaurants for a quick bite after some physical activity. All the staff are eager to help and the shop feels so inviting as you're welcomed by kind faces. When my family and I stopped by the other day, I happened to lose an earring that means so much to me. I got home, I was heartbroken, so I decided to give the store a call and see if they had found it. The staff was so helpful to keep a watchful eye out for it. The next day I called back, to ask if they had found it. Someone said they would look for it for me. They found it!!! And even agreed to mail it to my house so I didn't have to make the trek all the way back. So thankful for the hospitality of the employees and eagerness to please. After sitting in it and every other boat in the store that met my criteria I ended up purchasing a different boat than the one I originally planned. They were incredibly patient with me. Their prices are the same as larger retailers and discounters, and the customer service you get is awesome. The new temporary space they are in is super nice, while they wait for the old space to be rehabbed. I will never use Kayak Annapolis and encourage others to not support this company. Kayak Annapolis offered a 50% coupon voucher on LivingSocial. I purchased the voucher and called to make a reservation a few days prior to the expiration date (they run 3 tours a day and the last few days were on weekdays so I did not anticipate any problem since I was willing to go on any tour on any of those days). However, they said that they were completely booked the next three days. I asked if they would extend my voucher to the next available tour since they were booked through the voucher period and was told no. I responded that was unfair since I was calling within the valid voucher period to redeem it. To my shock, I was told it was "my fault" for not using the voucher in the beginning in the summer when I purchased the voucher despite the fact that the voucher was valid until the end of August. I explained that there was no requirement that I use the voucher in the beginning of the summer and I was looking forward to using the voucher at the end of August to celebrate the end of summer. Kayak Annapolis, which was obviously doing good business and would not have been putout in any way by extending my voucher to the next available tour, could care less that I was unable to use my still-valid voucher and refused to make any concessions. This company clearly does not care about honoring its offers and could care less about customer relations. In fact, I complained to LivingSocial about this incident and LivingSocial, on its own behalf, gave me a full refund credit since Kayak Annapolis refused to do anything to rectify the situation. While the tour may be great, I would rather support companies that are honorable and customer-oriented. I highly recommend using any of the fantastic Annapolis walking tours to learn about the history of Annapolis and use any other local company for kayak rentals rather than endorse Kayak Annapolis. I am a local in Annapolis and there are so many great companies here. Companies like Kayak Annapolis should not be supported! read more
