We absolutely LOVED working with Anne for our engagement shoot. We chose Alemda Beach in the Bay Area (where we met) as the location and really lucked out with great weather and lighting. But the weather is only as good as the photographers skill and she was able to use the environment perfectly. Her expertise shone through her direction throughout the shoot, but she was receptive to collaboration from us as well, which made it feel like we were partners in capturing the moment rather than us just being the client and her just being the photographer. Anne and her assistant, David, photographed our wedding in July 2012. They both also did an engagement shoot with us a few months prior to our wedding. Photography was one of the top priorities for my wife and I when we were planning our wedding. We were looking for someone who was skilled, but still easy to work with. We preferred a candid/photojournalistic style of photos (we especially wanted the photographer to be discreet during our religious ceremony), but we still needed to take some posed family portraits to keep the parents happy. Our ceremony and reception venues were also fairly dim, so it was important that our photographer could take good pictures in low light. Anne possessed all of these qualities, and she offered her services at a very fair price (important for our tight budget!). We also particularly liked that she gives her clients the digital originals of her photos rather than charging for prints and albums (his is probably why we found Anne to be more affordable than other photographers. After the wedding, she sent us a pack of DVDs full of high-res picture files, which we'll use to make our own wedding album. Anne had told us that she could create an album if we wanted, but in the end she likes taking pictures better than hassling with prints and albums. This suited us just fine. Anne and David were an absolute pleasure to work with! Even though my wife and I are introverts and don't usually like to be in pictures, we immediately felt comfortable with them during our engagement shoot. When the weather decided to be uncooperative (it rained!), Anne totally rolled with the punches, and brought fun props like umbrellas and scuba gear. We ended up having a blast with our photo shoot in the rain and got lots of memorable and unique photographs. Anne took a good mix of photos: some were romantic, others were fun, and a few others were artsy. When my wife and I finished our engagement shoot, we couldn't wait for Anne and David to photograph our wedding. On our wedding day, Anne and David delivered. Their photos were beautiful, despite the dim lighting in each of our venues. Anne was especially good at using her candid style to capture the little moments that we might have missed. We (and our parents) also loved the portraits that Anne and David took of our families. (Before the wedding, Anne asked us to make a list of portraits and who should be in each of them, which made the whole process nearly painless.) We were also impressed that Anne and David stuck around for the entire reception, so we never felt rushed to do all the little "staged" events (cutting the cake, first dance, etc.). We loved all the pictures that Anne sent us (about 1,000 from our wedding), and we highly recommend her work. For Christmas, my mother-in-law made small wedding albums as gifts to our family and friends, and they were a huge hit. Even people who weren't able to make it to our wedding said that when they looked at the album, they felt like they had been there. Anne makes my family look so good! Anne is energetic, relaxed and focused when she is taking pictures- this is the perfect combination when you are taking pictures of a 9-month old (read: short attention span). Our most recent photo shoot with Anne was in September and I was so happy with the results. Anne aims to please, so I am confident if there had been something I didn't like (which there wasn't) she would have redone the shots. The photos show my baby and I relaxing and enjoying life in our own home-- WAY better than the crispated shots we probably would have gotten in a studio. Anne Kohler shot our wedding (June 21, 2011) at San Francisco City Hall in such a way that our photographs are truly works of art. I was looking for someone to work with us, rather than directing the day to suit her needs (as I have witnessed many photographers do at other weddings). Instead Anne was non-invasive, catching all the important moments as they unfolded naturally. At the same time she has a good eye for unique composition, and whimsy. Anne was very accommodating and met with my family of 4 at 7:45am so we could get my toddler son at his happiest time of day. She had great communication leading up to the appointment and called me to give pointers of what to wear, bring, etc. She got very real shots of my family and offerred several times to have a re-take if we didn't like the shots. What can I say about Anne. She photographed my best friend's wedding, and could not have done a better job. Anne has done several projects for us. Her specialty is photography of people, but we hired her to do some bottle shots of our wines (R&B Cellars). We have a musical theme running through our brand, and Anne took that and ran with it. She was so creative in her approach and she did extra work to make sure that her bottle shots were perfect. Anne photographed my daughter's wedding (fifty people in our not-enormous house, with less than a month's lead time for Anne) and did a wonderful job. The wedding took place on an off-and-on stormy December afternoon sliding into evening, with variable and tricky lighting, but Anne met every challenge, both technical and personal. She captured a whole range of moments - from the scurrying-around preparations to the dancing, and from posed and unposed group shots to intimate close-ups. Her style is creative without being forced or self-consciously "arty"; she focuses on the moment and lets it speak. We had initially hesitated to hire a photographer because we were afraid that a professional might be intrusive - but we had no worries at all with Anne. She seemed at ease with everyone from my 88-year-old mother to an assortment of visiting toddlers. Most importantly, my daughter and her fiance, who live out of state and couldn't meet Anne until the day of the wedding, seemed immediately relaxed with her, even though my daughter normally hates having her picture taken. We couldn't have been happier with our experience with Anne. We did an engagement shoot with her -- which was incredibly fun -- and she photographed our reception several months later. We contacted Anne at the last minute to help us shoot some engagement photos and she was totally accommodating - she even drove to the Peninsula from Alameda to work with us on a Saturday afternoon. We were both a little nervous about getting the photos taken, but Anne put us at ease.
