The Irvine News and Views is the only source that gives in depth reporting and investigates in detail what has been happening here. We now have Districting and an election coming up in a few months. This is going to be our best source for finding out who is running and how they envision our future. The coverage of the development of the Great Park is of special interest as we now live here. I thank them for their coverage, important investigations and great dedication to the health of our community. We look forward to reading articles on our environment, our schools, business development and the sharing of what is happening around town. With its name and style of reporting, this publication presents itself as a valid news source. However, it is not. With news publications, there is of course always the element of subjectivity as it is easy for a news source to get the balance wrong in terms of presenting both sides. But they are legitimate as they try to report facts. But this publication unfortunately does not report facts. For example, it is currently and repeatedly claiming the members of a group known as Irvine for Responsible Growth (who are gathering signatures to slow the pace of building within the city) are paid petitioners. It is also claimed that this group is trying to "essentially halt all commercial and residential growth". These claims are completely untrue. The campaign has very little money and so must rely completely on volunteers and is not about stopping growth. Given the positions it has taken, this publication appears to reflect the interests of the Irvine Company - a company privately owned that concentrates on developing real estate - that owns among other things the Irvine Spectrum Center and Fashion Island. It is a shame. Our city of Irvine has a population of over 250,000. We should have a good newspaper covering local issues that is balanced and informative. Regrettably, the Irvine City News takes advantage of this gap. If you can control people's information (even with falsehoods), you can control their choices. That seems to be the goal of this publication. Its goal is definitely not to inform the public and let them decide for themselves.
