There was a small parking lot including a handicap spot installed at the upper church level for easy access. It's had new windows put in and there's a Justice Garden in full bloom that helps feed the hungry. They even have a farm stand at the corner of Hidden Valley Rd and Butterfield Rd. Sat am 9-11am in the middle of summer! Who doesn't want a beautiful ripe tomato! Over the years ministers have come and gone but I have to say, Pastor Bev has been an exceptionally bright light leading the memorial service we had for my mother. Her kindness and uplifting demeanor was very welcomed. We were guided through the memorial service steps and found this most comforting in our time of grief. She even made house calls to my bedridden mother at the end of her life. This was so appreciated and my father bonded with Pastor Bev over her caring approach to soothing my mother. She continues to visit our home now that my father is not able to regularly attend church services and they have lovely chats on our back deck. This is the sort of thing you hear about in small communities and we're very fortunate to live here to experience this touching and compassionate gesture. There's a wonderfully talented choir of singers accompanied by musicians that offer beautiful arrangements before, during and after the Sunday service. The Sunday School kids all have some time with Pastor Bev before they're excused to go downstairs that's often both hilarious and heartwarming. She's incredibly engaging and you can tell how passionate she is when interacting with the young members of the church. Overall, since this is the church I've always known almost my entire 54 years of life, it's about time I reviewed it! But the five stars goes to Pastor Bev!

On the one hand, the ethics are socially liberal which aligns with my reading of the Gospels. Also, the church welcomes people of any denomination as well as non-Christians and agnostics, important because my partner and our children absolutely don't identify as Christian. On the other hand, in an odd series of events I learned that the pastor had shared information I gave her in confidentiality, and also that what she shared was quite inaccurate. Apparently, she wrote me in an email, she reported to church leadership that I believed my children were superior to the others in the church and was determined to keep them separate. When I tried to correct this misunderstanding with the pastor I found myself -- and my two children -- suddenly and completely pushed out of the community. My children were no longer welcome to attend worship as they had, I myself was censured and forbidden from church activities unless I stopped "asking for help" and "making people feel sorry for me." And the leadership actually contacted my husband and asked him to help "reign me in." As a result, I've lost my husband's support for bringing my children to any sort of church. He's quite disillusioned. And I'm rather broken-hearted. The take-home message is that this church is wonderful and open right up to the moment that it isn't, and honestly the odds are you'll have a fine experience yourself.

On Sundays at 10:00 am the celebration is usually at the Corte Madera Recreation Center, on Tamalpais Drive just west of Highway 101. During the week, classes are held around 6:30 pm in the learning center at 199 Greenfield Avenue, in San Rafael. That's just off 4th Street right before the San Anselmo border. I'm learning to ride Golden Gate Transit, to check out cars from City CarShare, and to ask for rides from my colleagues. On weekends My Lady will either check out a City CarShare car or rent a car from Enterprise or Alamo. Why do we do this? Because there is a wonderful atmosphere in Marin County. People are peaceful here. The air is fresh and the sky is blue. The sun is warm, and there are plenty of sun dresses, shorts, and bicycles. The services at GGCSL are well worth attending, too. The music is fresh, the minister, Rev. Karyl, is inspiring, and the congregation is welcoming. The theme is offering "practical spiritual tools to transform your life and help make the world a better place." It's a great contrast to the cold and fog of the Richmond District, that's for sure.

The philosophy of Hillside is that all are welcome. No matter where you are on your faith or even if you're a nonbeliever, you are welcome at this church. It is free and open to all those who come through it's doors. This is a place where you can ask the hard questions or the ones you felt perhaps embarrassed to ask. If it's not for you then okay, no worries. We just want to make sure you ghve a welcoming, safe place to explore. The church leadership is top notch. The pastor, Steve Pridemore, is a gifted orator and has insightful sermons. After every sermon, I am always fulfilled and almost always learn something new. The congregation is friendly and diverse. Also noteworthy is that there are about 300+ members which probably makes it one of the largest churches in Marin and certainly Southern Marin. It's also an active church with tons of different ways to get individuals and families involved. The church has an annual trip to a Mexican orphanage that the church has supported for several years. The church has several active small groups that enable the congregation to, as the name implies, focus on topics and conversations among smaller groups of people. This can be huge when somebody is trying to become more actively involved and engaged with the church community and create deeper relationships with the other individuals in the church. Hillside also organizes several retreats throughout the year and participates in the annual leadership Summit. I've personally been to the leadership summit and one of the men's retreats and can attest to how awesome both of these things are. There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer within the church for the two Sunday services. Volunteer opportunities include ushering, working in one of the many childcare rooms, playing an instrument or singing in the band, working the projector, working with the sound system, getting the coffee ready and all the treats before the congregation shows. I am likely missing several responsibilities here, but you get the point. The church building is made up of two buildings. Both of the buildings, the parking lot area, the playground, and the general landscaping are all nice and tidy. So many churches I've seen have gone failed to keep their church and the surrounding grounds nice and tidy, but hillside has not. There are two buildings to Hillside - the uppermost main building and the lower Annex building. If you were visiting for the first time, be sure to go to the uppermost main building. It's pretty obvious, but just want to be sure you know which one to go to. The doors are all wide-open Sunday mornings and you can pretty easily tell where to go. Still curious? My impression was that he was aiming to succeed the current pastor (which happened soon) and treated anyone, visitors or member as a potential threat to his objective to take over the church leadership. Bad start. I left my handbag there and I went back to pick it up. When a woman member handed to me I could tell it was opened and searched. I had prescription pain medicine to deal with horrible nerve spasms that occur in my vertebrae more and then. She let me know that she found it and became instantly judgmental and critical as if I was some addict. I was deeply offended by the hostility she display and vile criticism she hurled at me -- a decent Christian with seminary training and wide experience in the church on many levels. Afterwards, i never heard from them again and needless to say, I never had an desire to return to this place, especially with Pridemore who lived up to his surname in personality. Very unfortunate. However, I will say that I do get anxious when preachers talk a lot or when the priest during mass takes longer than usual. There are very few pastors that will keep me engaged when they preach and without my being restless. The pastor at this church had me listening attentively. I was NOT bored at all. I enjoyed every minute of it and I live in San Francisco but this church is worth every mile traveled. Pastor Aparicio has the gift to preach. He engages his audience in a spiritual and peaceful manner. The musicians and the lead singer (young guy) have so much talent that they are a gem waiting to be discovered by a recording label. I know because my sister who is a Soprano singer with extensive background in music agreed with me when I showed her their youtube videos. My son, who is a 21 year-old, was also there and he too enjoyed the church service. The people there are very nice and welcoming! We had a great Sunday afternoon and when the service ended, we were invited to have lunch with them. I attended St. Raphael School in San Rafael where I received First Communion'. Thereafter I received Communion regularly at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I don't remember that we attended but it must have after mid-morning as it was very crowded with overflow standing at the back by the choir loft. In 1951 I often stood with my uncle in the back. We moved to the City in the summer of 1952 where I attended church and school at St. Thomas Apostle out in the Richmond District.... I have never forgotten going to Sunday Mass at Our Lady. I love the new church! BTW, I turned 80 last April.
