Following discharge from a five day stay at Sunrise Hospital for acute pain from spinal & leg…read moreissues, I was transported to this "skilled nursing facility" for care and PT rehab at the recommendation of Judy at Sunrise. Upon arrival at the facility I was taken to a room with a bed which was motorized but wouldn't work and looked decades old with an extremely uncomfortable plastic mattress. The room's furnishings were very dated and the recliner so old my husband covered it in a sheet so it could be more sanitary. The bed, the recliner and the AC unit were all very noisy from age. The room itself had damage on the wall and had the look of a much needed update. Staff was kind and courteous but my husband and I were immediately concerned when we asked if my meds had been acquired as I'd been told they would before I left Sunrise. I was also told that I'd be seen by a doctor they'd assigned to me within 24 hours. As the day progressed and still no meds were there and we realized they were past due and one anti seizure one must not be late, we asked but still they only offered excuses. My husband went home and got my meds there because we couldn't get a straight answer. I was non-ambulatory and used the call button after my husband left for help to my wheelchair to use the bathroom and kept pushing the button and no one came. This went on for half an hour and I finally tried to get to the wheelchair and didn't make it and went down when my left leg gave out. Pain was excruciating and my blood pressure was steadily going up, still no meds. CNA & Nurse were there and tried to help but it was explained to me that the ratio of patient to CNA was 13 to 1 and patient to Nurse ratio was 15 to 1. They had no time to spend with one patient. The next morning my husband came very early and still no meds or visit from the doctor they'd assigned and my blood pressure was so high the CNA couldn't even get a reading on her portable machine. We asked that I be seen by the doctor but were told that would not happen but he was sending his Nurse Practitioner since now my BP was at 191/110. The Nurse Practitioner was very knowledgeable and concerned and ordered an emergency medication to get the BP down quickly . My husband was very upset that we still had no meds nor had I seen a doctor since I was in acute pain and my BP was so high. He started to pack my stuff up and asked to have the resident Case Manager, Melissa Maguire, come to speak with us. She was very helpful and arranged medical transport from the facility to Boulder City hospital (we live in BC) where I was stabilized from the high BP and pain. I never returned to this facility and the lack of proper care is something I'll never forget. They're terribly understaffed and incapable of acute care because although they tell you doctors come each day and the paperwork you receive says you may choose your doctor, when we requested to see the doctor we never did. I asked to change from the unseen doctor Jason Gubler to any who was present and I was told no he was assigned to my care. After perusing his reviews on several websites I should count myself lucky. Don't bring a loved one here if they require acute care nor one who isn't mentally cognitive because they'll suffer the consequences. My family took me home to care for me and we employed Home Health Services and I'm so happy with my progress.

Marie is very understanding when I have concerns about my partner. The staff receptionists are welcoming and can answer any question you may have. There are so many people working and helping my partner. Different staff members have called me about various concerns and questions. I really like this important communication. They seem happy to be there. I am thankful and appreciate their hard work and dedication. On their website, it will let you know what activities your loved one participated in for that day. All 'Management' at Sunrise has gone through the trials and tribulations (some still are) of being Caregivers themselves. To me, this made it real. I wasn't being sold (again) by some corporate sales person. I WAS being understood by someone who was or who is, in my shoes. Tears were shed by all. Valerie, Director of Sales, is not only a Caregiver herself, but went out-of-her-lane to guide and comfort me. Ashlee, the ED, well she's as real as you can get. She started as a Caregiver at Sunrise. Who better to build and lead an incredible, compassionate team than one who has been at Ground Zero? Mary at the front desk. She's my anchor. BUT, the only thing of importance or validation is how my family member is doing? Well, in two days, he will celebrate his one month at Sunrise. He came from basically bedridden, in his room, with no social interaction, to walking to/from meals on his walker and wanting to spend a lotta time in the living room with other residents. To me, this is a miracle. Yes, he does have a DPT come in three times a week, but if he didn't have the WILL to get up and walk to meals and living room, well, PT would have no impact. My family member feels safe, happy, and loved here at Sunrise and he prefers their meals to take out! I feel incredibly blessed and gifted. You have no idea what it is like to finally feel that I have made the very best decision for his care and happiness, and this time, I made the right decision.
