I was very excited to be at Lifetime. I was invited as a guest and walked in feeling motivated and…read morehappy to experience the gym. Unfortunately, that completely changed after taking a class with the instructor, Alexander Liviner. From the beginning, his attitude came across as arrogant and superior -- exactly the opposite of what I was hoping for. At one point, he made fun of me for being slow. It was completely unnecessary. If he was trying to be funny, it wasn't funny at all. It felt humiliating rather than motivating. I also got a little confused with the weights and accidentally grabbed the wrong one. Instead of guiding me or correcting me in a professional way, he made a facial expression that made me feel like I was stupid. A coach's role is to support and teach -- not to mock or belittle someone who is trying. It also felt like he clearly favored more advanced participants, giving them more attention while others were left feeling invisible. I left the class embarrassed, disappointed, and honestly regretting that I took it. It was a horrible experience. Lifetime should choose instructors who lead with encouragement and professionalism -- not arrogance or favoritism.

I have mixed feelings for this branch. This is a significantly smaller version of lifetime located…read moreconveniently at Wellington station. Lots of parking options. However since it is closer to the city, it's small and has limited amenities. They offer a variety of classes, but their gym space is very crowded. I found their spin and yoga classes comparable to boutique club classes. Their other cardio/lifting classes are better suited for beginners. Their staff is very friendly and they have some tables to work. The only thing outside the small space is that it gets VERY crowded. Which means you're waiting on equipment, the bathrooms get dirty quickly and hard to find locker space. They only have a tiny sauna in the change room which is always full during prime hours. I would not pay a hefty membership fee for just this location.

A few weeks ago I complained yelp style about the epic wait/disorganization (who wants to wait 3…read moremonths to start PT?) of the scheduling staff. This is still true and will likely still be true for me (and you) in the future. But I wanted to update about the quality of treatment because it stands out. I've been getting PT for chronic pain for the past year and a half and have worked with 5 physical therapists at different practices. 4 out of the 5 didn't seem to know what they were doing with me and I got hurt pretty badly. Sometimes more than once if I stuck with that person because I thought that's how PT worked. The only PT who seem to know what they were doing was private pay ($$) so I didn't have the highest hopes for this program. But after my first day of finally starting with a PT/OT regimen I realized they really understand chronic pain. Which is great, because literally everyone I have worked with so far hasn't. I love that they have OT here, no other chronic pain program I have been to or looked into has it, because they teach you how to properly do things so you can protect your body. They also build in biofeedback, stress management, coping, and CBT. Holy comprehensive. So if you've started going to a pain clinic and found that it doesn't seem like the best fit, get a first appointment here (2 months + out) then expect your PT/OT eval 3-4 weeks later, and first appointments 2 weeks later. If they recommend the weekly group program the wait may be longer. Stick with your crappy pain clinic until you can finally get in here and I think you'll be glad you put up with waiting like I did.

I recently started going to F45 in Medford. The staff is very friendly and they provide you with a…read moregood overview at your first class. I like that they do a mix of resistance, cardio and hybrid workouts. They typically have a little bit of everything in each day. This is more cross training based so expect to lift light and fast. If you enjoy the heavy lifting with low reps to build muscle, this isn't for you. If you're looking to get lean, then this is a great workout! My only issue is that they advertise a 45 min class but the workout itself is closer to 35mins.

The crew that comes here is pretty hard core and they have a wide offering of classes- as early as 5am (!) for the first class of the day. I loved their music, too (straight hip hop generally and no techno like other F45 locations). The parking situation is pretty good and there is a really good nail salon right next door for those wanting to hit a gel mani right after the class. I was highly impressed with the motivation and instruction this class gave me. I had a baby within the year and after 7 straight days of this class I felt like I legit dropped the 10 pounds I had left to lose. This is the perfect work out for mothers - 45 mins in and out and Saturday you can treat yo'self to that 60 min work out. I am attaching a pic here- I've gotten more and more fit the more I go. I did have to join the Somerville Location b/c it was closer to where I live in Cambridge, but I really loved the Medford spot. If not for the traffic I prob would have joined here.
