I like this place. They got me in for June and May 2022 for the small group training. I like the fact that it is a 7am class and the programming and instructor are really good. The cost is $260 for 1 month which is not cheap but also not like, Equinox prices for personal training. Will likely continue in the summer/fall 2022 if they have the space. Parking is a little tough if you do not have a Somerville Permit (need to find a meter in the AM or just hope you do not get towed in front of the Car Wash place). Overall a great spot in the Cambridge/Somerville area. Reminds me of Ethos in the South End. read more

I'm updating this review since it's been a year and I'm still getting to the TR at least once a week. My favorite class is the Thursday 6am spin class. Derek and Regan are my favorite instructors for different reasons. Derek is great at creating a class that mimics an outdoor ride. Whether we're modeling our workout after part of the Tour de France or just taking on a series of hills, I always feel like I left with a great workout. Regan always choose fun, upbeat music that helps you to power through her drills. I feel like sometimes a class can be repetitive, but the music and her attitude make the class go by pretty quickly. I also recently tried a Wednesday 6am bootcamp class that meets outside at Conway park. I'd never worked with the two instructors (with Sean + another instructor who I hadn't met before). I normally DESPISE bootcamps, and it can suck being the new person to a group. But the instructors had great attitudes, were really funny, and made the class enjoyable by changing up our activities frequently. It involved a lot of partner work, but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. AND--I felt twinges in my abs from all the planking for at least a week afterward. (Which means I should probably do this class more often.) The only downside to these classes is that I would really love another 6am spin class (although obviously not possible if the indoor space is already in use). I feel like a lot of people would do a Friday AM spin class if it were offered. I'm giving 4 stars mostly because I've only found the 6am spin class to be the one class that I really consistently attend, but the Training Room is an awesome place to take classes if you want a low stress, low-commitment trial with a new activity. read more

Amazing! I have been working out at/with The Training Room for about ~2+ years. I started with in person classes which are invigorating, varied, fun and always kicked my butt! The instructors are stellar: they guide you, offer variations, focus on form and challenge you( no matter where you are in your fitness journey). During the start of the pandemic I transitioned to online classes and have been doing them ever since. Highly recommend! Thank you to Hua (my absolute favorite class is her 50/50) and Tyler for keeping me fit and inspiring me to move at 7am. I love the variety and am always learning( during Thanksgiving last year Hua programmed a plan where exercises spelled various foods... how freaking creative)!! My form, strength and conditioning have all improved significantly since joining. These instructors really care. Now go try a class!! read more

Overheard tonight at Maren's 50/50 class: "I come to 50/50 three days a week, and this class is definitely the hardest." Ladies, remember that episode of sex and the city where the girls go to a club opening and Miranda reveals she fits into her skinny jeans? I had that moment last week, and I attribute this not insignificant feat to the Training Room. I took a cycling class at the other location, but the schedule at this one-- Somerville Ave tucked behind Porter--works better for me. I've taken 4 or 5 Tuesday night classes there now, with Maren, Heidi, and Regan. At first I wasn't sure I could go for a Tuesday night asskicking with Maren, the regular instructor who's pretty intense. But after a handful of classes with her, I'm used to it(I come from yoga, so loud voices and being encouraged to MOVE IT LET'S GO is not normally in my wheelhouse), and I really enjoy her class. Studio owner Heidi is good, too, as is Regan. I find they all talk enough during class to keep me distracted from how much work I'm doing-- a must for a lazy exerciser like myself. 50/50, btw, is a split class of spin mixed with strength exercises-- squats, planks, lunges, and the like. It's a mix on and off the bike, not 30 minutes on followed by stretching. The studio also offers kettlebells, spin mixed with kettlebells, straight up spin, and personal training. At $70 for 6 group classes, it's money well spent. Also, real humans work out here-- not size 0 lululemon models, which is refreshing. The facility is nice albeit a little small and clean and I think there's even a shower. I dig the Training Room, and am stoked I found it. Thanks, Yelp! read more

I started taking personal and group classes from Training Room since September 2018. I used to be a couch potato and and never enjoyed exercising unless it's a game. Two years later I can see my muscles growing and feel much more confident. Hua is my personal trainer. She is very professional and fun to work with. She helped me to stay motivated and that's the main reason I can keep doing this for this long. Her 50/50 group class is also one of my favorites. It's a pity that I can't take this class during pandemic as I don't have a stationary bike at home. By taking online personal training and group circuit training classes during this pandemic, I'm glad that I stayed strong and didn't gain weight :). I highly recommend Training Room to people who want to make exercise their habit. read more

I was reasonably fit for my advanced age, having worked out on my own at home using YouTube videos and books since late 2014 (and I used to swim years ago). I had accumulated injuries over the years, and was continuing to injure myself from time to time as I worked on my own. I felt I really needed proper training. I went to the Training Room in Somerville to get kettlebell training but ended up working weekly with a personal trainer on many additional functional skills. I started working out with Kevin a year and a half ago. He is very knowledgeable, a great teacher, and he is always learning. He is kind, funny, and always in a good mood! I started doing two sessions a week in November, and my fitness level has increased sharply. I am doing a lot of kettlebell work and just started doing chinups (something I never thought I would be able to do). All the trainers at the Training Room are awesome, and you would be fortunate to work with any one of them. read more

I have been going to the TR for over a year now. I always purchase the unlimited monthly group class package (the personal training and small group training are a bit too pricey for a grad student). The TR is the best gym I have been to, for several reasons: 1. The emphasis is on getting stronger/faster/technically better. It is not on looking decorative in a swimsuit. I have never heard one of the trainers say something like "this is for bikini season, ladies." Of course you will see physical results from regular workouts, but your attention will be directed to the exercises you're doing, not your summer vacation photos. 2. This gym does not make most of its money from people who sign up for long memberships and don't go. The longest "membership" you can purchase is one month. People keep coming back because they're getting a great service. 3. The group classes are excellent. People attend them at all levels of fitness and a wide range of ages. The trainers often give a couple options for exercises so everyone can find a way to challenge themselves. Heidi (one of the owners) is particularly great at getting you to push yourself, but I haven't had an instructor I didn't like. I'd encourage a new client to attend several types of classes taught by different instructors to see what's available/what you like best. 4. There's a good mix of cardio (mostly cycling) and strength training options. If you want to really work on heavy lifts, then small group or personal training is probably best. But if you are not an experienced lifter (or you want to stick to moderate weight, or do some supplementary training), the circuits classes will be very helpful. "Strength training" classes at some other gyms involve swinging around some little dumbbells. Here, you can work on deadlifting your body weight or more (for example). read more

Not sure why I'm only now getting around to writing a review, but, here it is: the Training Room has been a game-changer for me. I've been attending various classes at both TR1 and TR2 since late 2014. For about a year and a half, I attended 1-2 classes per week, but with no real consistency. I struggled with my weight, and didn't see any change because I wasn't sticking with a program. In early 2016, I had to take a break from most of my fitness routine due to problems with my neck and shoulder. After going through months of physical therapy and finally being cleared to work out, I decided to invest in myself and work one-on-one with a trainer at the Training Room. In May 2016, when I first started training with Derek, I was extremely limited in what I could lift/push overhead. He took great care to write a plan for me not to coddle my problematic shoulder, but to actively improve it and make it stronger. Within weeks, I was feeling AMAZING - no more pain and numbness in my shoulder and extremities! It took very little time for me to progress from no overhead motion at all, to being able to do assisted pull ups and chin ups, TGUs, and overhead press. Under the guidance of Derek and the other fantastic trainers at TR, I've continued to make progress and put up numbers I never thought possible. I've taken several of the classes available at TR - cycling, circuit training, 50/50, and kettle bell training. It doesn't matter which instructor's class you take; they are all equally fantastic and give individualized attention where needed. The classes are small and good for any fitness level. I've been expanding my horizons at the TR and have some additional input. 1.) Heidi is definitely a co-owner. 2.) And now I've taken a bunch of classes with her shorter, louder counterpart, Maren. Maren runs class like a drill Sargent who cares. It's always hard...scratch that it's always F*cking Hard. But she is impeccable when it comes to form. From spinning, to push-ups, to Turkish Get-Up's, Maren's got your back. 3.) Derek. I love Derek. Real world cyclist, personal trainer, spin instructor, and primal moves pioneer. He is always changing up what's happening but my favorite is when he does rides and maps out the class to parallel parts of the Tour de France or a ride through the Swiss Alps. 4.) Tyler's circuit training class is my favorite way to end a Monday. I think the best way to describe him is PEPPY. He's serious with a ton of energy, and zooms around the room making sure all 12 of you are doing your 30 second circuits just right, and his hands on cues are some of the best I've had. 5.) Sean is like 6.5 feet, super duper muscle-y, and teaches classes that will carve you into the machine you always wanted to be. At least that's my hope. I like his classes because he is so big that when he demonstrates something, it's exaggerated enough for my oxygen deprived brain to understand. I've done both his advanced kettle bell class and the sports conditioning. They are challenging every time, but you are always doing something new and fun. I have been coming to the Training Room for about a year and a half. I've taken Spin classes, 50/50, Bells & Wheels, Yoga, and even done some small group training. I've taken classes with Heidi, Maren, Tyler, Regan, Sean, Derek, and Alex. One of the things I love most about this place is how focused they are on proper form and attention to injury. At the beginning of every single class, every single instructor asks if anyone has any injuries they need to be aware of. They also usually provide modifications if something is too hard. I hate going to the gym and not being able to do something because I'm too tired, not strong enough, or literally not capable of doing but not knowing what else to do instead. I'm rather surprised by the comment from Chris P. that Maren critiqued form without providing instruction. I've never once heard any of the trainers say "that's not right" or "that's not how you do it." Everything is always framed as a suggestion: "you should try bending your knee more" or "hinge more to get the bell up". The trainers are always available after class for questions, as well. Overall the best things about the setup at the training room: -Flexible pricing structure and options. No monthly fees or commitments. Take one class or take $100. Come for three months and then don't. Take 1 personal training class to get better at something specific and then never again (which I did). -Variety of classes. There are a large variety of classes, and if there's not something you want, they can probably add it if enough people are interested. -Variety of trainers. Everyone needs something different in a trainer. Some people dislike Maren's tough love. I need it. Regan likes to do speed work on the bike. I hate it. -Personalized attention. I've been taking two classes a week with Maren for about 7 months now. She knows what I'm capable of, what my injuries are, etc. She knows when I'm not working to my full potential and she's not afraid to call me out on. She also knows when I'm just having an off day and will tell me to take it easy and rest up. And I'm sure the other trainers are the same way. read more

I ended up at the Training Room last year after searching for classes in my area to help kill the monotony of my solo exercise regime. I had taken off 50lbs on my own, mostly through long, arduous cardio machine workouts; runs; and general flailing in the weight room (not the best method for someone with lower back issues). I was looking to mix it up and hopefully drop the remaining 30ish lbs. My first class was a Saturday morning 50/50. Now, after two years of almost daily workouts I assumed I would be in good enough shape to take whatever was thrown at me. I mean, I was still overweight but come on guys, I could run 8 miles! Cocky? Yes. Smug? Oh yes definitely. Correct? Heck no. I had to enlist assistance getting out of bed the next morning. I knew then that it was time to rethink my fitness approach. While weight loss and vanity were definitely driving forces behind my workouts, the main point was to set myself up for an active life without any real restrictions. Having done so much work on my own however, I was a little timid about having other people involved in my workouts. And I still didn't really think of myself as someone who saw a trainer. (Those people all have little dogs and peons to fetch them skinny lattes, right?) After several months of taking 50/50s and some spin classes it was obvious I needed to work on some flexibility stuff in order to do a lot of the exercises without hurting my back (and to get the most benefit from the workouts). I finally approached Heidi after a particularly squat heavy 50/50 and asked if there was anything I could do to actually, you know, squat. She replied that there were a million things I could do, which is how I ended up as someone who sees a trainer. And it's been great! My budget and schedule only allow for monthly training sessions and Heidi has accommodated that fantastically. I have made larger strength gains in the last few months than in the entire previous year and I am generally excited to workout. The lack of back pain that previously came with my unguided forays into weight/strength training is also a huge relief. For serious, this place is great. Everyone who works there is a rock star. It's a gracious studio in a great location. The clientele is diverse, making all fitness levels comfortable. Every dollar you spend absolutely pays off. The classes are super fun. Trained here for 5 months while on a clinical rotation in Boston. Went from 200 lbs. to a sexy 177 lbs. I purposely lived in Somerville to work out here and still went after I moved to Dorchester. This is the best place I've ever worked out at because of: *Small classes. *Face-to-face interaction with friendly people. *Convenient online booking system. *Clean towels. *Gradual, yet challenging workouts. But the real reasons to come here are: Maren for her infectious energy, Heidi for her fun workouts, Lauren P. who will make you love burpees and wall sits, Lauren E. for her rockin' Vinyasa yoga , and Danny for his amazing Kettlebell workouts (and his random stories). If you want to make a positive change in your health, nothing works better than surrounding yourself with caring and knowledgeable trainers. Invest in yourself (like I did) and enjoy your new self. I have never been good at exercise. I was that kid who sat on the sidelines because my PE teacher was scared I'd have an asthma attack. Yes, I'm still asthmatic, and I bring my inhaler everywhere. The Training Room is the only place that has a way at making me feel strong. I love their cycling classes -- all of the trainers are awesome. I'm a big fan of Derek, Heidi, Maren, and Regan. There's a real sense of community at the Training Room, which is very similar to the way I feel about the vibe of Somerville in general. I've taken some boot camp classes and small group trainings. I started coming here for training after my trainer Regan left Healthworks. I'm still here a year later. The workouts with Regan now are so much different from what they were at HW. Now we have more space and equipment. There really seems to be a method to their workouts and they ask you to set goals to work toward. What I especially love about the TR is that I walk in and all the instructors/trainers know who I am and ask me how my progress is going. I like the small gym feel of it. I've only gone to a few classes but the ones I went to were challenging and the session flew by. I like that they have two locations now and that the new location allows for more space. read more

I'll join the chorus: fabu! I go for the circuit classes with Tyler, and when I can make it kettlebells with Sean. I'm sporadic at Bells & Wheels and 50/50 with Maren; they're by no means worse classes, just I like weights better than bikes. These instructors are all excellent. They know their stuff cold, they're great examples, they teach techniques clearly. Classes are kept small enough that you get personal attention, and there's an ironclad culture of no shaming. I love the ceiling in the weights classes -- you can grab light weights and treat 'em as cardio, or go heavier and push for a PR, both paths are fully supported. I love love love the boutique format! It looks expensive up front, but there's no fat: you sign up day by day for just the time you'll actually use. These guys are in business to make you buff, not to sucker you into a membership that you won't use much, and it's a world of difference. They're not phoning it in, and you won't be either. read more

AWESOME. i love the idea of this place. small personal classes so you can get some instructor attention. everyone is supportive of each other. i havent tried the personal training sessions but the people who do them seem to love them. i LOVE maren. she is SO nice and an awesome trainer. she motivates you and is really positive. im pretty fit as i was a competitive athlete all my life and these classes kick my ass. my boyfriend is not too fit (yet!!) and he likes going because the trainers support him. you push yourself so if it's a bit too much one time, you can take it a little bit easier.. or if you really want to push yourself to the max, you can! you sign up in advance. classes are starting to fill up fast! i mostly do the 50/50 class because i dont like being on the bike for an hour and i really only do cardio-type classes but they are all good. read more

The Training Room is a great gym. All the instructors are incredibly friendly, knowledgable, and helpful, and put together interesting and challenging workouts. The gym is clean and bright, and the classes are small. I also like that you can book & pay for classes online ahead of time. The classes may seem a bit pricy, but they are worth every penny! The advanced spin class with Suzanne is my favorite - a 90min spin class that is more like a real ride than other more general fitness-focus spin classes. The class is tough, but Suzanne is so encouraging and keeps the class interesting so the time just flies by. It's the perfect winter training for triathlon season! read more

Love the Training Room - I've had chronic knee pain for years that has held me back from the sports I love (triathlon & skiing) - Hua Chin has been helping me get back into shape & just as importantly, she's great in dealing with my injury and finding a training path that works for my knee issues AND will hopefully have me back to triathlon training soon. I have been going to the Training Room for several months for personal training with Jayne. The experience has been an incredible journey of learning what being fit truly is. The emphasis is on building strength where it matters most not where it looks best. I can feel the results in my daily activities from running to weightlifting. I have shoulder issues and Jayne has helped me strengthen my shoulder to both remove what was daily pain but also allow me to do activities I struggled with like playing hockey. If you want to get in proper shape, feel better on a daily basis and have some fun then go to the Training Room! read more

This place is simply amazing. A small gym where you get the attention to form that you get from private trainers, TR changed my consciousness about my body. Nowhere else have I been able to access my core with as much precision and strength and to learn to do basic but crucial exercises (i.e. real push ups) while training with smart, well-informed trainers who know their stuff cold. If you like sports-- as supposed to simply working out-- this place gives you that too since you learn to train not just how to get in shape. I've learned to do Kettle Bell training with Maren (one of the owners and a force of nature!) and love the fact that she (and her co-owner Heidi) emphasize learning the necessary techniques required to do this kind of training. They schedule workshops where students can start from scratch and slowly build up a safe and precise way of training that is a million times more effective than winging it, something that simply does not have a place at the TR. Maren and Heidi maintain high expectations for their Kettlebell students because they truly care about their progress. There are different levels of training from which students graduate as they perfect their form. And there is lots of comradery and general good feeling through the process. Since my first review a few things have happened: 1. I achieved the goal of doing a push up. I can do quite a few, actually, and even "harder" versions with weight or with my feet elevated. So rad. 2. I switched from training with Heidi to training with Alex. He trained me for a bit over a year. He proved to be even goofier than I am but was dead on serious about getting me strong and I am forever grateful. I swear, he tricked me into being able to deadlift my bodyweight (a good thing, really!). It took a while, but I got there, and it was fun. (But don't worry, I am still a very active member of the Heidi Shalek fan club!) 3. I upped my ability to cardio. Ooof. I started training at TR in February 2011 and nearly died (mild exaggeration) after my first 50/50 class. Since that isn't a good feeling and Heidi knew I could do better (she was training me to do better, after all), I kept going and started to learn how to do effective cardio. 50/50 classes and eventually, 60 minute spin classes, became something that I looked forward to. Yes, they were still challenging and I left with jiggly legs and catching my breath, but I could see vast improvements to my speed and distance. After a class a few months ago a fellow classmate came up to me and said that she was trying to chase me all class, which kept her motivated. Rock star moment! 4.Kettlebells and heavy objects ain't no thang. They are so fun and I know how to effectively use them, which makes working out at home with one much easier and safer. Since I relocated a few months ago, I have received compliments on my KB swings, deadlifts, and sled-pushing form from trainers in other classes. 5. That previous review? I was definitely over 150 pounds and working toward just getting under it and a little leaner. Now? Hovering at 15-20 pounds lighter and a hell of a lot stronger, not just physically, but mentally. Whatever you want to achieve workout-wise, you can do at TR. There is a trainer for you. Before moving, I took classes with just about everyone and loved what each trainer had to offer. Like I said, Alex made me stronger and made deadlifting fun and not scary. He, along with Heidi, made a past shoulder injury not hinder my ability to work out. Chris is probably one of the nicest people I've encountered and structured his classes excellently. If you need a place to start, go to one of his classes. Tyler will move super fast, super effectively, and super smartly. Maren makes you want to be your strongest for yourself (and probably for her too). She dishes tough love but it works. Watch anyone there do their thing...there's something to learn. I'd be confident working with any TR trainer. I live in NYC now and can not find a place with a facility or staff as nice or classes/training sessions as effective. In full disclosure, I cried after attending my last class prior to moving. TR means that much to me. For anyone looking to make changes to their body and lifestyle, don't hesitate for a minute....TR will be the place. read more

Like other reviewers, I'm hesitant to give this place the 5 star review it deserves because I don't want to share it with anyone. I've always wanted to join a gym, but the idea terrifies me because I don't know what to do in one. Left alone with free weights or a machine, I would either stand around awkwardly or somehow manage to injure everyone within a 10ft radius. Plus, as a lifelong procrastinator, it's not like I would actually GO. This is why the Training Room is perfect for me. I have an unlimited monthly class pass. I HAVE to be there, at a certain time to get the workout. I HAVE to go specific classes often as I can, so that the cost per class decreases with my pass. The classes are stupendously small (generally between 4-10 people) and run by great trainers who pay attention to your form and encourage you to give it all you've got. So every week there are tons of different options that are all included on the pass: kettle-bell training, 50-50 (half spinning, half body resistance work on the mat), 100% spinning, yoga, circuit training, jump-roping & kickboxing, and a boot camp every Monday at 6am (I'll wake up for that one day, I swear). I've been doing it for 3 weeks now and so far it's been great - I sleep better, my stamina has skyrocketed, and my body just feels ALIVE - this must be what happens when you feel both terrific & sore all the damn time. This gym is very well organized, doesn't smell like sweat, and its very clean. However, I would have liked to have a more helpful instructor. I attended several of the 50/50 classes, and I suppose I wasn't doing all of the exercises in perfect form so Maren pointed out that I wasn't doing the exercises correctly but she did not offer to help during the class or after the class. In most gym classes I have taken, the instructor is willing and encouraging about correcting form. Instead Maren stated that I should pay for private sessions, which is unaffordable and not something I am interested in. read more

I'm not one to write a lot of reviews, but it feels really important to give a shout out to Tyler at The Training Room because of how he's helped me get stronger. I first started working with Tyler ~2012/13. I was having terrible SI joint & foot pain and was disabled in a lot of ways. I had finished multiple rounds of physical therapy & was told to do pilates by my Physiatrist, but that was too much too soon. I was connected to the TR by a PT at Spaulding Hospital. I was fortunate enough to be matched with Tyler. I can't remember the details, but I know that Tyler has helped me go from that weak state to my current state of having a 4.5 yo daughter whom I can carry around. I also recently started to do some light trail running which I have not done in 8 years. There was a 2.5 year hiatus in working with Tyler (2018-2020) because I moved to southern CA. After trying a couple local gyms earlier this year, I realized how high level the Training Room staff is compared to what's out there and decided to reach out to see if Tyler could see me remotely during the pandemic. He has been able to train both me and my husband and give us highly attuned training via zoom. I joked with my husband about how Tyler is the Jerry McGuire of the training world because he gives you the kwan - "love, respect, community". I said that other people may look at us training with Tyler and feel jealous that we get the kwan. We can't say enough about Tyler and his passion for his craft of personal training. He studies everything from breathing, to posture, to minute details of movement & form. If you want a stickler in the best of ways, he's the guy. And, as a bonus, you also get the Kwan. read more

I started going to the Training Room after quitting cross fit. Wow, what a difference! Unlike my crossfit classes, these guys are focused on making sure I do the exercises correctly and closely monitor the class to make sure we are using the correct form. I learned to do many exercises that crossfit never bothered to ensure I do right, correctly. They have a great mix of classes- I personally love the sports conditioning, circuit training and 50/50 classes. The trainers are just fantastic! Love this place! read more

Great place, love the no membership business model -- makes it all about fitness, instead of making $ on how little you use the facilities like the big gyms do. All the instructors are amazing, even in classes they make a point to give individualized instruction. OH and the music makes it worth it alone. The Training Room was exactly what my workouts needed! When I first arrived to Boston 2 years ago, I researched gyms and went with a "Club" style gym down the street. But here is the deal, after a while, those workouts on my own became stale, boring and lonely; even WITH taking the free classes. So my first point regarding the TR is: 1. VALUE: Since your workout is with a skilled, professional, personable trainer every time you walk in the door, you get a good workout every session. Therefore you don't waste your time, hence, get results. This is if you take classes or sign up for training. In addition, once you do your assessment, there was NO pressure sales pitch at all. Heidi was very respectful of how much I wanted to spend and worked hard to find me a partner to match my budget. The last point regarding money which is AWESOME is there is no automatic withdraw process. Hence, you pick the date you want your month to start and your unlimited classes are 30 days from that point. This is great because you are in total control. If you are going out of town you are not locked into paying for something you won't use. Most gym's don't have that luxury. Therefore my next point is: 2. PERSONABLE: I have had the pleasure of taking a class from almost every instructor and can say that each one is amazing. They make first time participants feel comfortable and welcome simply by being the enthusiastic professionals they are. They are committed to interacting and knowing the goals, activities, fitness level and injuries of each individual. They make you feel like part of the gang right off the bat. It was so fun! My final point is: 3. QUALITY: Like I said, every workout is worth your time. Maren is so realistic when it comes to people and the way they live their lives. She encourages you to go all out because why would you waste your time doing a workout that doesn't have a purpose. Maren is very passionate without being overwhelming. In addition, it was very important to her that we understood what we were doing and why we were doing it. She trains and coaches you with the anticipation that you can do workouts on your own one day. Again, they are realistic and respectful of your finances, hence personable. There are no gimics here, the trainers at The Training Room just want what is best for their participants. If you are thinking about joining a gym, give this a try first. I've had nearly 300 sessions at The Training Room, in both of their Somerville locations. I started out doing personal training with Jenny Cunha, who I absolutely love and adore! You can check her out on Instagram and see how inspiring she is! I was only doing 1/2 hour, twice a week. Now I do two 1 hour circuit training classes and an hour of personal training a week. I have accomplished so much over these past several years. When I first started, I was 38lbs heavier, had horrible back pain, tons of stress. Now I am pain free, and stronger and fitter than I have ever been! Every single person that works there is a delight. They greet you with a warm smile and welcome. There are all different shapes, sizes and levels of fitness, and no one feels uncomfortable or out of place. They modify all exercise to your specific needs. They recognize and celebrate when you have a breakthrough. I just love it there. It feels like home! I am constantly being challenged. My biggest joy is being able to do 5 perfect body weight chin ups! I worked hard to get there, but could not have done it without the expert training I received. They give excellent queues for good form and execution of all the exercises. I see the same faces over and over, which is a sign of customer loyalty and dedication! Highly recommend! read more

I've always struggled to justify a gym membership because I like to workout outside and practice yoga. All in all it just never seemed to make financial sense. Enter The Training Room to save the day!! TR is pay per class, personal training session or group training session. No membership fees need apply. BRILLIANT! This allows the flexibility in my workouts that I love. And let's get serious for a second THEY KICK YOUR BUTT! I love a great workout, but most importantly I love a workout 1) that emphasizes safe, correct technique to avoid long-term injury 2) with instructors who recognize your personal capabilities and push you to meet/exceed them each and every time. This is an all-around excellent personal training and class-based instruction gym. I'm a former client only because I moved out of the area. I have to say, the toughest part about leaving Somerville for the North Shore was knowing I wouldn't be able to make it to the Training Room nearly as often. I'll echo others here and say that the entire staff is great: my trainer Jason was incredibly supportive and basically an encyclopedia of exercise, nutrition, and wellness knowledge. Maren took me from a spinning newbie to someone who owns a pair of cycling shoes with clips! And Heidi took me through a couple of kettlebell classes -- including swinging -- without any fatalities. The Training Room is great for all fitness levels, whether you're a self-starter looking to augment what you're already doing, or you've always been intimidated by the gym culture and are just looking to get started in a friendly and supportive environment. If you want to stay fit over the coming winter months, you'll be hard pressed to find a better place to do so. read more

I am a huge fan of The Training Room. I have been training with Maren one of the owners for many years. The trainers there have seen me through various injuries and are now seeing me through a pregnancy. They specialize your work outs keeping up on current research and information on the best techniques for working around and on different issues. The gym itself is a pleasure to work out at. It is open, clean, and bright even in the dead of winter. Not only is the personal training wonderful but the classes that they have are fantastic as well. The spin classes work for beginners and experts alike. And the Yoga classes are really amazing. All in all I am a huge fan of the space and the amazing people that train there. I've been working in private sessions with a personal trainer here for several months and the results are wonderful. I am a senior with back, knee and shoulder problems and prescribed "physical therapy" hasn't been helpful (not worth the money or time). In the weeks I've been with Tyler here my back issues have vanished completely, my shoulders are much stronger and mobile, and knees are improving. I was concerned about a grunt-and-sweat mentality (not at all my style), but the trainers are knowledgeable, skilled, attentive, and extremely careful. My progress has been slow and steady. I recommend Training Room highly for people nervous about joint and movement issues, who want to get started gradually without pain. Also, people here look normal (not model-sized). As I get stronger I hope to be able to attend the classes. read more

The fitness industry has been growing so rapidly in the past few years that it seems like there's a new gym sprouting up in every neighborhood. Unfortunately, many of these facilities are overpriced and have long-term contracts that clean you out if you decide to cancel. What's worse is that a lot of these places are staffed with trainers who are either inexperienced or overly pushy about making the sale. And even though there are also some amazing trainers out there, it doesn't come cheap. If you want to maximize your time at the gym by hiring a trainer, you're looking at a pretty huge chunk of change when combined with your already steep membership fees. At the Training Room, Maren and Heidi have taken a different approach. No monthly fee. Only training. They offer one-on-one training at competitive rates, but you can also do partner or small group training, which lowers your expense dramatically without sacrificing the quality of your workout. PLUS, they've got drop in cycling, yoga and some bootcamp/cross training type classes that are interchangeable if you buy a package. But the best part is that these classes (and the trainers who run them) are top-notch. No other gyms are doing that! But aside from the financial aspect of things, this is a beautiful and well designed space with plenty of windows and all new equipment. The trainers are some of the best in the city in my opinion, and when you're around them you can tell that this is their passion. Both the girls are so committed to their vision that it is a pleasure to be around them. And I know that any money I spend there is only going to help them succeed. I love this place! I've only been going for about a month, and its pricey compared to gym membership. But the key here is I actually GO to these classes. And I feel it the next day. I much rather spend a bit more on something that gets me results. Trainers are greats and everyone is friendly. I've also noticed that these classes comprise mostly of women. Traffic in the area can be a be hairy after 5pm, but there tends to ample parking on Somerville Ave. read more

In town from NYC and trained here for 2 days - had a phenomenal experience and wish we had these guys in New York! Even if you're a newbie to circuit training, don't be scared. This place is fantastic and super supportive! Took 50/50 class with Heidi in Somerville - she was super supportive, explained everything thoroughly, and took the time to show me around the studio and make me feel welcome. The hour and exercises were tough and exactly what I needed. Also did circuit training with Chris, he was extremely welcoming, demonstrated every exercise really well, and provided lots of adjustments & suggestions THANKS GUYS!!!! read more

Hello. It's been almost 2 years and I'm still happy as can be with TTR. The place has changed a bit since my original review, but in good ways. There are plenty of special classes to try in addition to the regular ones. The May-August outdoor boot camp was great last year and should be awesome this year. (Heat will be a killer come August, though. Bring plenty of water!) I'm still learning new ways to do exercises, even old standbys like pull-ups. The trainers focus a lot more on kettlebells now, which is cool. The only bummer is that they still won't take my request for Slayer at the end of a workout. Oh well. No place can be perfect. ;) The bottom line is that I see no reason to stop coming to TTR. If you're interested, come in and give them a try. A little patience and a lot of hard work will pay off, whether you're looking to add muscle or lose those extra few pounds. read more

If I could give this place 15 stars, I would. It is wonderful. I have been going there since the new year, and I have not been disappointed yet. I started going here because I wanted a "drop in" exercise place near my apartment, so I found the Training Room...... The classes are small, you get individualized attention, and the workouts vary by level. Heidi is always giving revisions to the exercises, if you want to go harder, or you need an easier modification.... I feel like my fitness has improved 10 fold, and I can't say enough good things about this place! read more
