This was a great short hike. A bit challenging at the beginning, but overall worth the beautiful views. We typically come here on Friday nights for sunset hikes. It is fairly quiet at that time. This trail gets packed on weekends. read more

Wrapping up Earth Day with this trip to NY. Call me a hater but this one was on the tougher side! Up up up through the woods until you get to a clearing and think it's over. Aht aht more uphill to the lookout. The lookout was great - the older I get though the more timid I am about heights. I peeked over the cliffs and promptly scooted my booty back up on the rocks. Down wasn't that great either but the jagoff woman who had to make her SHOCK and SURPRISE known about my group of plus size baddies hiking the same trail as her put a revenge pep in my step. This is a one and done for me. I like a challenge but I prefer scrambling with my uphill and this didn't have it. People say 40 minutes to the top. These people lie. read more

Anthony's Nose is a great hike! Alltrails says it's moderately challenging, which I would agree with. I would say that there's 3 starting points to this trail: - the first would be right when you get off the bridge but there isn't a real parking area and only fits a few cars on the side of the road. - the second is at the other end, the Toll House Parking Lot, which has an actual parking space that fits a good amount of cars. However, it is much further and you'd have to hike ~3 miles to the main view of Anthony's Nose. - the last one would be at the middle, although it's actually closer to Anthony's Nose and is about ~1.5 miles to get to the main viewpoint. We ended up parking at the Toll House Parking Lot so it was a looong hike. We passed through several streams of water, went up multiple inclines and rocky steps and then down, which eventually led to the parking lot closer to Anthony's Nose. And then had to hike from there to the main viewpoint. If we had started at the other end, we would've gone straight up to the viewpoint first but I'd recommend starting from the other 2 parking areas cause I'm one who prefers to have something to hike towards. It was a lovely hike overall with plenty of fresh air! The path is also easy to follow regardless of where you start, you just have to follow the blue. read more

One of the best hike we had. A great views of the Bear Mountain bridge, the mountain and Hudson River as rewards after the hike. Definitely worth the trip. Coming from downstate NY is not that bad. About an hour and half drive from our location.( Southern Queens) . There is no intended parking lot if using the Camp Smith trail only parking in the shoulder. If coming earlier, you may get lucky getting a spot just like what happened to us. It is a bit steep in the beginning and the walking stick helped me a lot. I need to made several rest along the way but once passed that particular climb, it has been an easy path after. Bring drinks and snacks as the trail takes about an hour to climb , about half hour to soak in the views and another hour to go down. A recommended trail for a beginner like me. read more

This is a great hike. Beginner's friendly. Its a Moderate hike but it has steep incline at the beginning. Then it levels up for a bit. There are signposts thaindicates where the trail spit and very easy to follow. I recommend you come early in the morning as it is a busy trail and parking might be a problem. And the trails might get crowded. Parking is on the side of the road except where there are no parking signs. They do give out tickets This place have Amazing views at the overlook. Everybody loves Anthony's nose! It's definitely not as easy to get up as it used to be with quite a few fallen logs now blocking the way and some erosion creeping up here and there but it's still a great path. I think of it as the hardest easy path in the area ... as in, if you're able bodied and like hiking it's not a problem but I wouldn't take it for granted that everyone will love it etc. Everything else, that I know of at least, is either a pretty gentle walk or a more intense climb. It's a great sweet spot because you feel like you moved afterwards but you're not dead or anything. And the views are gorg. Check it out! And don't be afraid to smile on the path if you see someone you don't know. Stranger danger is so 80's, people. read more

Anthony's Nose: One of the most popular hiking trails in the Hudson River area. There are two starting points/trailheads for this hike, one is along 9D and one is along route 202 (camp smith parking), I took the Camp smith parking area, just a heads up, limited cars only, probably 5-7 can fit if cars are properly parked. If you took either of the two it will lead you to the peak with amazing views of the Bear Mountain bridge. From the Camp smith trailhead, just follow the blue blazes marker. You will be able to pass through an area near a New York Sate Military live firing range, KEEP OUT!!!! Anyway, you will see a few warnings posted along the trail. The trail is just a 2.6 miles out and back. Difficulty of the hike is about 6/10. It is important to pace yourself and just enjoy the nature around. One section of the trail intersects with the Appalachian trail. It will take you about 2 hours to finish this trail out and back. If you want to enjoy the view at the top and soak in the terrific view + the hike will take you about 3 hours. Once you reach the peak you will enjoy the fantastic overlook view, you will notice an American flag which was placed there. This is a pleasant trail to hike for everyone, not that far from NYC. read more

With the pandemic still going on, Anthony's Nose is a good decent hiking spot that's not so far of a drive (about 1hr away) from NYC. Thankfully the trails were not too crowded when I went around 2-3pm. PARKING I found cars parked along the road and in front of the trailhead #2. I don't think there is a specific parking lot, but just found a bunch of cars parked along highway 9D. TRAIL - Trail up to the top of Anthony's Nose is basically just following the blue markers on the tree. - The trail itself is fairly rocky with some elevation. There were dogs on leashes and kids on the trails, so definitely not the most challenging hike out there. Just be careful on the way down. I found myself slipping a little. - There are signs warning of ticks, so always check your skin while on the trails. But with a little caution, you will be fine. - There were some points which seem like the top because people were sitting on the rocks and there was a decent view, but the real summit is where the flag is. From the top, you can see views of Bear Mountain, Bear Mountain bridge & the Hudson River. read more

Anthony's Nose is definitely one of the best hiking places around NYC and the drive is not bad about 2 hours. The trial is challenging and not easy for beginners. We don't recommend to visit with elders or kids. It took us about 1 hour to finish the trail. The view from the top is amazingly magnificent and memorable. I originally wanted to go to Bear Mountain, as there are more trail options, but was told that there was a lot of damage from previous flooding so it may not be the safest. Someone suggested Anthony's Nose and I went n checked it out. On Christmas Day, I just wanted to squeeze in some light physical activity and fresh air and still make it back in time to prep for dinner. Anthony's Nose was to me considered an easy and short hike, with some incline in the first half. It was enough to get some cool air and enjoy the view. I loved how fresh it felt up there. Once I got to the top, it was a nice moment for a light snack or lunch. Plenty of rocks and places to sit , considering the influx of crowd it was getting. Arriving at 9am, it was a great time to go because it wasn't too crowded. I'm glad I started my hike before others did, we were maybe the 3rd car parked in the area upon arrival. The trailhead may be hard to find at first, but if you come from the bridge and go down 9D, you'll see the kiosk/trailhead on the right side. I can imagine how beautiful this may be during the fall... coming on a day that was a day or two after some rain may not be the best idea since some parts can get muddy and slippery. It's doable though as there are an ample amount of rocks and logs that friction up the mud. Dog and children friendly/doable. Great spot for a quick nature fix! read more

This section of The Appalachian Trail is only an hour drive from NYC. So when it's 80 degrees and sunny, it's a perfect day for hiking!!! The trailhead is right off Route 90. You can park your car on a shoulder nearby. There are three sections of this trail to Anthony's Nose. The first part is steep and strenuous. It takes roughly 25 minutes to the split which is a flat trail. You will need to make right and follow the blue markers. This flat trail lasts for about 10 minutes before it get to the last part which is somewhat steep and rocky for another 20 minutes to the top. Once I got to Anthony's Nose, I took half an hour to rest and take it all in. The view of The Hudson River and Bear Mountain Bridge are pretty stunning! So it's 55 minutes up and 30 minutes down; it's totally worth the views! Just drive! read more

2 mile hike ending up with great views of the Hudson River and valley. Parking on the shoulder along route 9, just be careful walking back to the trail head. The first 1/3 of a mile after you climb up the intial flight of stairs is a dirt path followed by a half mile of steep stepsv and rocks. Just take your time and it should be no problem as you see plenty of small children and older adults navigate it. Once you reach the top the final mole is just a nice level hike until you reach the clearing offering views of the Hudson River and West for miles. read more

Distance: 2.5 Miles (Round Trip) Elevation Gain: 654 FT One of my absolute FAVORITE short hikes with a breath taking view of the Bear Mountain bridge and Hudson. This is my go to hike that I take ALL my noobs on when I'm introducing my love of hiking to others. It's like when you take someone fishing and you pick the very best lake so that they don't hate it afterwards. Hiking is the same, you don't want to take someone on a hard hike with a shit view cause they will hate you & hiking altogether. Seriously! What's amazing about this hike is not only that it's short, not very difficult, has an absolutely stunning view at the top for that instant gratification but you can even change this hike up to make it a challenge. Taking the marked trail up will have you hiking about 2.5 miles round trip with some elevation gain but nothing that would deter a new hiker. Once I intro a new hiker to this route we return and attempt climbing the rock face of Anthony's nose right by the bridge (near gate/fence). Climbing the rock face gets you to the top much faster but it's a much more strenuous route which makes this a great short hike to challenge a new hiker. I suggest taking the noobs up the marked trail first then see if they want the extra challenge of climbing the rock face near bridge to get up faster while increasing the difficulty a little. This was a perfect hike that isn't super long, it is steep the first .06-.08 mile but we were at the top within the hour and we stopped a bunch of times along the way. There is not a parking lot so you do have to park on the shoulder of the road. It is a pretty busy road but I felt safe leaving the car on it. Waze does not lead you directly to the trailhead but with AllTrails it brought us directly to the opening. A few minutes before the trailhead they do have a few scenic pull offs that might be worth checking out. One viewpoint did have porta potty's but they were locked durning the week but worth a try since there is no bathrooms at the trailhead. I'd recommend hiking sticks they made it so much easier especially when coming back down. The view at the top has plenty of spots to sit even if it's a little crowded. There isn't much shade so wear sunscreen and definitely pack a lunch. You can easily sit here for an hour or so. You get a really cool view of the bridge and water. read more

Anthony's nose has not-too-steep trails which makes it perfect for people who are beginner hikers. The hike is not too long and the view at the top is very well worth it (look at that amazing view with the bridge and bear mountain right across). It's also not very crowded unless you're going on a holiday. The great thing about Anthony's nose is that the trails are mostly covered by tall trees that make them cool because of the shade, the hikers are saved from the harsh sunlight which is always a plus. One caveat would be the 1.5 mile walk from the Manitou station to the trail entrance but honestly it's not too bad if the weather is good. read more

This hike is great. The views are incredible and it's short and sweet but equally tough. We drove up here and parked along the side of the highway, but I believe you can take the Metro North up as well. The hike is basically an uphill set of natural stairs, and once you hit an overlook, you make a right and there site a beautiful view of Bear mountain and the bride between the Hudson. I'd recommend hiking boots but I did it trail running sneakers. You definitely work up a sweat. read more

Great hike for beginners with a big payoff at the end! The start of the hike may be a bit intense for some. There's heavy incline, but no rock scrambling. Super short! By the time you start feeling it, the tough part is already over and the rest of the hike turns into an easy stroll before you hit the top. Gorgeous views up top! If you're driving, you'll have to park along the road. Makes the hike a short one. If you're taking the train from NYC, it gets tricky. You'll have to catch the Metro-North train on the Hudson line and make sure that you get on a train going to Maitou (a.k.a. The Breakneck Train). There are only a few trains that make stops at this station each day; I believe only three-a-day each way. From Manitou, you'll have to walk 2 miles to the trailhead. It's an easy walk along the road, but you'd have to add 4 miles to your otherwise short and simple hike. Pay attention to return trains to make sure you give yourself enough time to walk back to the Manitou station or you may be stuck out there for a bit. There's nothing there in terms of shops, restaurants, or even restrooms. read more

This spot is a bit rough to hike up to but the view is amazing! Also very breezy when you're at the top. If you're not a fan of steep rocks or if you're up for a challenge cause you're out of shape like me, then go for it! Breathtaking views of Hudson River & Bear mountain bridge. Very crowded tho, which was only negative.

A moderately strenuous trail with a very rewarding view! We hiked this trail when it was covered in snow, which made it quite strenuous since we didn't have traction devices and couldn't see the trail properly. There are apparently two ways to get on the trailhead, but we took the hard way inadvertently. We took the train from NYC's Grand Central Terminal to Manitou. Highly recommend! Great views. Afterwards, we walked through a street with private properties flanking both sides until reaching the highway. This was the sketchy part because cars were driving from both directions at 45 - 55 mph and you are walking on a very narrow shoulder. I thought death was coming for me everytime a car whizzed by. After walking for about 2 miles on this sketch highway, you will reach this sign (attached picture below). It's VERY EASY TO MISS, especially if the trail is covered in snow!! We missed it and hard to turn back. Another group went all the way around the curve of the hill and went to another trailhead via the parking lot (which involves less strenuous climbing). Once you reach the trailhead, it's about a couple miles of upwards hiking until you reach a flat area, and then more upwards climbing until you reach another flatter terrain, passing by small lakes, before reaching the peak of Anthony's Nose! It was incredibly beautiful at the top and we even saw a woodpecker! The upwards hiking at the beginning of the trail was the hardest, mainly because we didn't have the right gear and the trail was covered with snow, making it difficult to see if we were going the right way. This was a great hike though and it took us about 2 hours to finish the out-and-back. Some very fit people took about 45 minutes. :-) ' No rock scramblings / drop offs. I am terrified of heights but this hike was doable. read more

If you're coming from New York and getting off at Manitou, only one train car's doors open. It's the only car where the doors open because the station has a really small platform. It's either the very front or very back car so be sure to ask. Otherwise you won't be able to get off and will have to wait until the next stop (like we did). read more

1. Time: 2 hours needed. Allow one hour from parking on 9D right pass the bear mountain bridge to Anthony's nose lookout. 45 minutes back down. 2. Parking: GPS: 41.32033, -73.97879, on shoulder of road after taking left onto 9D northbound towards Cold Springs after crossing Bear Mountain bridge. Please note that there is another approach from Bear Mountain Toll Booth if your are coming from Peekskill direction on hwy 202 northbound. 3. Trailhead: right after Putnam County sign and hikers sign. Information sign and rock steps start you on your way up. 4. Path: starts rocky and steep. Look for steep rock outcropping about twenty minutes in after tree that is split into three to your right. Follow rock with two white vertical lines up hillside. Just remember go RIGHT if in doubt at any point on trail. After climbing up hillside, you will reach a T intersection where you go right. Follow path up and around to the right where you will go left under fallen tree to get to Anthony's nose read more

Great hike. 1) This is the perfect hike for a beginner. 2) The trails are excellently marked and easy to reach the nose. 3) From the parking, use the white trail up, then once you see the blue trail, use that to reach the overlook (i.e. nose). 4) Amazing views. Tip: 1) Park at the Fort Montgomery additional parking lot, which is stones throw away from Fort Montgomery itself (which closes at 5pm). The additional parking lot is 24/7. 2) This helps you save money from paying the toll for the Bear Mountain Bridge. 3) It is safer to park there, because the parking for Anthony's Nose is not good. read more

I'm not going to knock off stars for how difficult this trail was for me. When going up I saw kids aged 6+, dogs, grandparents for crying out loud and there I was, a decently in shape 21 year old and I was huffing and puffing the whole way up. I stopped multiple, like maybe 10 times on the way up, and I got up the mountain in 40 minutes, so it would probably be even faster for a more fit person. After multiple inclines there is a long flat part you have to walk on to get to the top, which was nice for me. The view was spectacular and definitely worth my pain and suffering on the way up. Going down is very steep but there are plenty of branches to hold onto. read more

This is one of the shorter hikes in the area that can be done in about 2.5 hours but is probably a 6/10 in difficulty. While it only takes 2.5 hours to complete, it's a nice steady incline. Incline is never an issue for me. The decline is usually more challenging for my knees. Along the way, there's minimal rock scrambling. If you really want rock scrambling try Breakneck. Trails are nicely marked on the trees and easy to follow. There is usually a good am light of folks hiking in a nice sunny day with their dogs. But there's room for everyone. Great Cardio and strength training on this hike. By the time we made it up top we were a hot mess but it was worth it. Those million dollar views up top are to totally worth all the sweating! Up top is a great spot to take a break and picnic as well. We saw many folks chilling out and having their lunch up at the top. This is suitable for kids and elder folks. Brought my parents last time and they enjoyed it thoroughly. read more

We had a great time walking this trail on the 4th of july. My friend tells me their are always people on the trail, and the parking area can get pretty crowded so keep that in mind when coming to the trailhead. From what i read it's a 2.6 mile roundtrip trail, so it's pretty short, and not to difficult as the trail is pretty much free of rocks and well maintained as well as blazed. The climb to the top isn't to bad, i'd recommend hiking poles, but i recommend them for all hikes. The view from the top is really nice and worth the effort. It's also not to crowded up there......To be honest this is a great cardio trail....If i lived nearby, i'd try to hike this trail a couple times a week for good heart health and a break from the world.....Your just not gonna get away from people here, that's all. read more

Great hike. Get ready to feel it in your glutes, thighs and calfs! The trail involves several steep climbs up a step-like rocks. Then it plateaus out further toward the top and you walk through a beautiful Forrest/wooded area. Definitely worth the hike to see the view from the top! read more
