Antioch CC has been a blessing to me and my family for the past 15 years. It has great pastors, a great discipleship school (my husband and I went through it in 2019), amazing youth pastors (my 3 kids grew in their faith) and so many awesome ministries. I feel sorry for people who say they were hurt by this church, but that hasn't been my experience or anyone I know who goes there. The pastors all have wonderful families and are faithful, loving, and kind people. read more

This place is a cult. Plain and simple. There is no other way to describe my experience here when I went to Baylor. The college ministry was and likely still is rampant with spiritual and psychological abuse, and while you may be lucky in finding a group that isn't like that, my experience has left me unable to attend any other church or have a fulfilling relationship with God. The worst part is knowing that there is no accountability whatsoever aside from "we aren't perfect, oops!" I recently started attending therapy sessions and after years of thinking that something was wrong with me, I realize just how much of my depression, anxiety, trust issues and more stem from the spiritual abuse I endured during my time here while at Baylor. Although I wish I had left when I first started feeling like things weren't right in the college ministry, I am so thankful that I made it out and that I'm finally able to heal and get back on track. Sadly, part of that healing has been realizing that there is not a place for religion in my life anymore. There are a lot of churches in the Waco area and I strongly encourage any Baylor students seeking college ministry, or anyone seeking a church home, to please do research into this place, or any church, before attending. I wish I had just simply googled Antioch Community Church before I attended, because some of the things and accusations that pop up from just that are enough to make anyone run screaming. I fully anticipate this review will be taken down or dismissed by church staff, but for anyone currently attending Antioch who may feel that something is off, you are not alone and you should listen to what your gut is telling you. read more

This review is about 20 years late, but based on other reviews still very relevant. Antioch was the reason I ended up questioning everything I believe. Why I walked away from and have avoided any church even remotely like Antioch. In my senior year of college at Baylor I ended up in a physically and emotionally abusive relationship with a guy in my life group. In hindsight, all leaders in my life group were aware of what was going on. I felt I was treated like I was equally to blame as the abused. The way this was handled by church leadership and the aftermath was appalling. This guy continued to lead and mentor youth even after the full scope of the abuse came out. I recently wrote a church leader at an Antioch church plant where I am living and no response. Which tells me all I need to know. Antioch worships their church leaders and protects their reputation at all costs. I'm lucky I walked away from that situation and was able to move on, but Antioch has a lot to answer for in how they contribute to and facilitate emotional and spiritual harm to some of the most vulnerable in their community. read more

Hear me when I say I loved my time in the college ministry. It was what I needed for the time, and there are some incredible advocates that were there as things got bad. But I cannot recommend this church. This place is a church of deep spiritual abuse, sexism, racism, ableism, and homophobia. They also do not allow for any space to disagree. A friend of mine was kicked out of a volunteer position because she posted about transgender rights on her Instagram story (not even for anything said in church), and when she chose to leave, all of her friends from Antioch completely isolated her. The @dearantioch page on Instagram is full of similar stories from people who experienced isolation, abuse, microaggressions, and even sexual violence that was covered up. I personally know of stories of sexual violence that occurred in the church that was brought to leadership. When confronted, they sided with the assaulter. I personally experienced significant sexism being silenced and talked down to on a regular basis because I am a woman and being called into ministry. I can count on one hand how many women are in pastoral or eldership roles at Antioch, even though there are dozens of men in these roles. The sheer level of purity culture emphasized here is insane. I was taught to hate my body, that my body is sinful, that everything needed to be controlled. Leaders targeted women for what they were wearing frequently and held the mindset that if a woman is assaulted, it is because of her outfit being too tempting for boys as opposed to holding men accountable. Once, on a mission trip, there were some incredibly sexist comments made by male teammates, including the pastor, about how women should submit and not ask men out on dates. It turned into a screaming match, and it ended with the women lamenting how we had no female pastoral help us talk through purity culture and dating and how hard it is to be a woman. I had just finished a book specifically about that, and it was incredibly healing for me. I proposed to the ladies that we start a book club and read it together and invite the women of our ministry to join, but when proposing this to the pastor, I was told that I couldn't because the author had written a blog post about an incident where another pastor at a neighboring church had made some extremely ugly and sexist comments about a woman hitting on him. The pastor agreed what was said was wrong, but because of his friendship with this pastor, I was not allowed to share this book club in Antioch spaces as he did not want to ruin the reputation of the church as a friend of this other space. They care more about their image than actually helping women that needed this. But the worst part was how I was treated because of mental health issues. I have chronic, lifelong mental health conditions. There is an expectation to fit a certain mold at Antioch in how you talk, act, listen to, etc. And I tried to fill that mold faithfully. When it came to my illness, I was expected to be fully healed. That never happened. I had a very nasty episode during which a leader told me I was suicidal for attention. This same family was a major part of barring me from growing in my ministry call because of their hope to see "more freedom" regarding stuff they had very little context about when the comment was made. Through recovery, I was looked down on, talked down to, and told often that I needed to be fully healed and thought I was not going to be able to pastor because of my illness. I was barred and removed from leadership positions with no warning because of gossip. The pastor leading one of these never talked to me but just called and told me that I was supposed to be taking a break because she had talked to others that i was "close to" before deciding to kick me out. She never told me there was an issue. Instead, the team gossiped about me and then kicked me out and avoided me until I left. This is not a safe place to be vulnerable. This place is abusive. I do not recommend. Stay safe. Go somewhere else. read more

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this church. I was a part of the college ministry during my first couple years at Baylor. The people I met here really sparked a fire in my heart for Christ, and for the first time in my life, I felt like I was seeking the Lord of my accord - my faith had become real to me. That being said, things kinda went downhill from there. I would describe Antioch as placing a high value on passion and enthusiasm, and less value on right theology and healthy church praxis. Certainly there is a balance to be had here. There is the pervasive, unspoken idea that an Antioch Christian is somehow better/more of a Christian than a non-Antioch Christian. This idea is never preached explicitly from the pulpit, but it is commonly held among people involved here. I remember even thinking it myself. This is very dangerous and pharisaical, as it can lead to self-righteous and judgmental behavior. Similarly, there is the idea that anyone involved in church leadership or ministry is somehow on a different/elevated level of Christian than laypeople. Also a very dangerous and unbiblical idea. I could list many experiences/anecdotes, but I'll limit myself to just two. The first involved a young, 20-something post-college staffer who was speaking at the college service. During his sermon he said "and to be honest, there really isn't much that I struggle with." I believe he was making the point that because he was abiding in Christ, there wasn't much he struggled with. But as a 19-year old baby Christian, I was crestfallen hearing this. I felt like I was fighting a mountain of besetting sin, and couldn't believe how far I fell short of this person I looked up to. The second experience involved the college pastor on an overseas mission trip. All of the men on the trip went out to lunch with him, and after we had eaten, he said "Ok I want everyone to go around and share with how they've been struggling with lust and pornography recently." I didn't have any issue talking about this subject privately, but in this instance, we had no choice in the matter. We had to say something, or else risk looking like we were hiding something. It was more of a performance for him than contrite, heartfelt repentance. This was a very hurtful experience, and was one of the key reasons I ended up leaving Antioch. On the bright side, I thankfully did not abandon the church completely, even though I went through a few years of confusion, pain, and lack of trust of church leaders. Eventually I found my way to a healthy church that gave me room to be me, and have been slowly growing in my faith since then. I also still keep in touch with several people that I met while at Antioch. Some of them I even count among my closest friends, even though most have either moved on to other churches, or left the church completely. I do appreciate the emphasis Antioch places on global missions, as I find that very exciting and a commendable response to the Great Commission. My advice to leadership would be to realize that in your zest to expand the Antioch "Movement", many people are getting burnt out and hurt. Don't write off people who leave Antioch, but instead take time to sit down and talk with them, it could shed light on some of the blind spots/cultural issues you may not be aware of. read more

My review is coming in as a visitor to Waco and attending Antioch on several occasions. As a first timer visitor, I loved the style of worship as I am used to contemporary music. I formally went to the Village in the DFW area so I am used to music from Hillsong, Bethel and other non-denominational Christian music. People at the front are pressing into worship with hands up and dancing! It's beautiful. I've really enjoyed the teaching from Jimmy and they are focused on making Christ known in the nations of the world so you can see they want to send others out. I understand that call and also realizing we need it here in our cities. I saw the old Antioch campus and have been to the new one. The new one is large to accommodate for the amount of people that come in. As someone said before, parking can be rough so get there early! Antioch Waco is spreading the Gospel in Truth and that's the most important thing to me! read more

My moms response after sharing my experience at this church was,"glad you didn't join a cult today." Although everyone was insanely kind, and the sermon was mainly good, there were things that really seemed off to me. For starters, they feel the Holy Spirit speaks to them to bless particular people. At the end of the service individuals were invited up to the front of the stage to be prayered for, comments were made like, "if you are someone struggling with a car business" or "upper left back pain" as well as "if you are a woman who has struggled with nightmares." I've been to several non denominational churches and never had this happen before. Like, who is telling this entire group of people that they are being called to pray for people with these issues? Also comments made that were taken out of context from scripture such as God answering every prayer or promise with what you want, even physical healing. Seemed more like a performance to me. read more

Just attended church last Sunday. The service in the new sanctuary was just awesome. It is a huge sanctuary. Service times have changed on Sunday's. There are two in the morning that are in English and the one in the evening is a Spanish speaking service. I like all of the pastors I have heard and their emphasis on God. Have been attending regularly since January and on visits to Waco to see my parents. I have great respect for this church they follow the teachings of Christ and the Bible. read more

One of the best church experiences I've had. Solid preaching from the Bible. We're traveling full-time, but a family prayed for my husband as we were walking out. His leg is broken, and they just took the time to stop and pray for him. Then, when we were loading the car up the main pastor was walking out, stopped and talked with us and then prayed for us and for our future travels and journey. He was so kind and genuine. If we're back in Waco, we'll be back to this church. We have 2 kids as well and the kids ministry was welcoming and friendly. Both kids loved it! read more

I am sad to say I wasted my college years at this church. Incoming Baylor or MCC freshman, I advise to find another church. Leadership led me to believe something was wrong with me frequently and the only way I was good was when I "conformed". This place will change you to fit their mold and get defensive when you question it. Don't waste your precious time and mind. read more

I would give this a 3.5 stars out of 5. I used to go to this church during my college years and I wouldn't mind going back there if I ever reside in Waco. I do like how this church strives on being biblical and to how to have a personal relationship with God; it is very focused on global missionaries, therefore you have plenty of opportunities to do missionaries overseas. I have learned so much on how to develop a personal relationship with God. However, as far as fully getting involved and also being "full blown included" into the church, you will have to find the right group for yourself and that could mean trying out different Lifegroups and find the one that is best for you. You'll have a better chance to find the right group if your goals are similar to most of the members and leaders. For singles looking to date someone and eventually settle down with that person, I heard there are rules to follow if you want to remain in the church. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the rules as I never had to go through that during my college years. Like what others have said, this church is not for everybody as far as the style of worship, one-on-one accountability, etc. For those who have a passion to share the gospel overseas, this is the church for you. read more

When a senior pastor calls a single woman weird during a sermon and states he disliked her without really getting to know her (she could have had a mental illness- not her fault) or uses an entire message to focus on local celebrities that attend the church, it's time to find a true church, this one is not it. The few attempts I made to speak with the pastor were rebuffed by his disinterest and an email to the church to discuss the inappropriateness of their actions was ignored. I enjoyed the music but it had too much of a concert atmosphere with flashing lights and fog machine. I don't really feel that is an appropriate worship atmosphere. The Lifegroup concept, while a good concept for a massive church unable to tend to individual needs, was still lacking and left a bad taste in my mouth. I was treated rudely by the leader and another member of my life group and booted from the group at a time of struggle for me when I needed support. When I brought my mistreatment to the attention of church leadership, they made excuses for their behavior and failed to address their unchristian attitudes. It is too late to change my mind about this church. I will never go back. read more

What an incredible and wonderful service today! The worship was honestly as strong, anointed, and talented as I have heard in in any church setting ever - and I was a former pastor for 18 years. The lead pastor was seemingly on a little bit of a break as he has had some recent health issues - but was still present and active in the service. They baptized over 40 people today which was also a joy to see. The facilities, restrooms, friendliness, decor, there's nothing not to like about Antioch - would definitely visit again when back in Waco read more

As a disclaimer, I was involved with this church for a couple years, and their Dallas branch for a couple more. My goal is to take emotions out of this, and to give a balanced review for someone who is church hunting, so they know what to expect and if it could be a potential fit for him/her. The church is one of the larger in Waco. It's multigenerational, with the heaviest draw being college students, although there is a significant representation of families and senior citizens. Dress is mostly casual. Worship is contemporary at Antioch. Plenty of hands in the air and active singing from the congregation. If towards the front, you may encounter jumping up and down from a few. A worship team leads the singing from the stage, accompanied by a small band. The song selection is a combination of songs written in house and from groups, such as Hillsong and Bethel Music. The church is heavily global missions oriented. The preaching style is conversational toned and holistic. Sermons are typically thematically organized into series and supported by Biblical scripture. Due to the global nature of the church, there is a good possibility that on a Sunday when a guest is visiting, the senior pastor might not be preaching. There is a very capable team of associate pastors that also preach. If I had to break the Sundays down, the senior pastor preaches about 40% of the time, and the associate team/guest speakers preach the other 60%. Things to be aware of when visiting: it is wise to show up 30 minutes early. Seating and parking is at a premium. They have coned off all parallel parking and barricaded a through street, so it can be a hike. At the service's conclusion, they have a weekly opportunity called "Next" which allows one to meet staff and learn about how to get further connected. The biggest selling point for this church is its love for the community of Waco. Regardless of whether you connect with the preaching, music, theology or size of the church ... you will realize there are authentic people who want to encounter Jesus and give that away, especially from their board of elders. There are also a lot of programs and ministries within the church. The biggest weakness is the inequity in the church between those who are serving and being served. Having been on the inside, whether it has been volunteering as a small group leader, prayer team member or "taking out the trash" volunteer type duties ... it was a slow burn out. There simply aren't the manpower resources and support available to help those who need it, especially those who lack foundational life skills or are dealing with situations best handled by professional counseling. And so what we are really talking about is an infrastructure breakdown. At the end of the day, what I desire is a community of healthy friendships. I have experienced more of a parent-child relationship with most. Being single, I realize that could be a steeper struggle for me than other chapters of life. For someone coming in with a family, for example ... they may have an easier time connecting with other families who are in a more spiritually grounded place. Antioch is a loving, authentic, spirit-filled body. I believe most will ultimately decide to stay/go based on their success in connecting with others in a meaningful way. read more

This church is amazing! When reading this review, please keep in mind that I am a Christian and church-going person. I understand that church (and religion in general) is a personal preference, so while this church was great for me, it may not be right for you (although, I hope it is!). I'll start with the pros... PROS: You can interact with Jesus in a real way in a variety of ways at this church. They offer tons of out reach programs and lots of ways to get involved and give back (e.g., homeless ministries, children's ministry, college ministry, music ministry, prayer team, etc.). Though, the mission trips at Antioch are really where you encounter Jesus, in my opinion. They are often reaching out to people who don't know anything about Christianity and it's really amazing see people come to know Jesus. They go on trips all over the world. People are generally very welcoming and the culture at the church is really giving. I was struggling financially while in college and several times, I had surprise meals or gift cards given to me by members of my life group. Stuff like this happens all the time in life groups though. One time, a lifegroup pooled their money and bought one of their members a car, as he was in college and working two jobs without proper means of transportation. This person was completely surprised by this, as it was not something he complained about or asked them to do. Even though the church is huge, it feels like a real community because of the way the life group system is set up. The preaching style is applicable (in my opinion), authentic, and biblically driven. I learned something new every week. They have an awesome discipleship program where you can be led deeper in Christ by meeting with someone weekly and going through the bible. This is strongly encouraged if you are part of a life group. CONS: If you are involved in the ministries of this church, you can, at times, feel like you're under a microscope. Also, you may get the feeling people are intrusive. However, this is really subjective and obviously it depends on the people you get to know! This may not be the case anymore, but when I was a member here (2006-2010), if you wanted to date someone that was also in the college ministry, there was a process involved. You had to go on group dates first (or at least get to know this person in a group first, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I wouldn't want to feel like this is what I HAD to do) and also ask permission from their life group leader and get their blessing before you dated someone. I think you were allowed to ask them out on one date, though, before asking for the blessing. I believe there were other rules involved that I can't quite remember now, because I never actually dated someone while going to this church. I don't think people forced you to abide by this dating protocol, but I think it was strongly encouraged if you were trying to date within the college group. I still obviously was apart of this church and just moved past the strange dating protocol. There are some very enthusiastic people that come to this church who may be jumping or lifting their hands during worship. They usually stand at the front. Again, this was something I could look past, but is a personal preference. read more

My husband and I attended this church all through our years at Baylor and we loved it. Aside from the fact that they obviously love Jesus, my favorite thing about them is that they not only preach the Bible, but actually live it. It probably looks unusual to others at times, but they're okay with looking strange if they're obeying Jesus. I love that. It takes guts to do what's right even with others think you're strange. Worship here was amazing, and by that I mean I felt I could actually worship God rather than just singing songs or watching someone else sing songs. The sermons left us inspired to make practical changes in our lives. I need sermons that are both Biblical and practical and sermons here were the best I've heard. All that said, there's no perfect church. Antioch isn't perfect either. Personally, I think all the best churches are made up of people who know what rotten mess ups we all are and who look to Jesus for help. I feel like Antioch gets it. They love others and give up their time and energy helping people who need Jesus and/or have practical needs - I think that fact alone makes them a five star church. read more

I came to Christ and had my life radically transformed by God and through the people of Antioch. I am so thankful for this church!! The people at Antioch really have a heart for glorifying God. When I came to Baylor as a freshman I had no clue what it meant to have a day to day relationship with God. I knew a lot about God because I was raised in a Christian home, but as I began getting involved with Lifegroup and the awesome friends I made there, they taught me what it looks like to have a heartfelt, passionate love for God. I realize that many people have been hurt by churches in general, but I urge you to think about the fact that no one is perfect. People who go to church are NOT perfect people. They are people who realize how imperfect they are and therefore, they accept how desperately they need grace. read more

I went to Antioch beginning my freshman year. I grew up in a nondenominational background very similar to Antioch so honestly seeing so many people incredibly passionate about living for God wasn't new to me. But the difference with this church was how well the people there LOVED me. My whole life (particularly high school) I had been a christian with TONS of junk in my life, lots of secrets and hidden sin. My life was forever changed by God while I was at Antioch because the people there truly LOVED me and accepted me as I was. I knew I could be myself around the people in my life group and my leaders and wasn't gonna be judged because of what I had done. Antioch has been an incredibly healing place. Through being involved in this church I found freedom from sin I never thought I could get away from, and discovered a joy and purpose in life that I never dreamed of. But I'm not gonna give the glory to the church - they merely facilitated this - it was truly God doing the work in my life. The thing I love about this place most is how they always point everything back to Jesus, scripture, and God getting the glory. Never themselves or anything else. There are a bunch of great churches in Waco. Since I got involved at Antioch I never really knew anything about other churches other than the great things our pastor and college pastors say about them. If you're new to Waco I encourage you to visit Antioch as well as some of the other great churches in Waco and find out where you can grow best and where you feel at home. Lastly, I feel compassion for those who had weird/bad experiences at Antioch. It's just a church, after all; full of people who are learning and growing, lots of broken and messed up people: so it's not gonna be perfect. But I think that's the point :) read more

This is a really good church. We are still really young church but we are growing fast because of faithful people who come to this church. We are so grateful for the people who serve at this church! In kids ministry we are so happy to lead these awesome kids to Christianity. And in the "Journey" which is 1st - 4th grade (and where I serve) these kids are the best! We take good care of these kids and they love to be at Antioch. read more

I was a member of Antioch for the three years that I lived in Waco. Antioch exceeded my expectations and challenged me to grow in Christ. I was fairly faithful to study and pray and had been regularly active in church with a hunger and passion for a fresh move of the Lord. Antioch is a place where the people are passionate and purposeful to BE the church. Of course, there are many failures but out of those failures the love of the Lord flows with unexpected beauty. If you are serious about deepening your relationship with the Lord and being an active part of HIS body, then I HIGHLY recommend this church. read more

We came to visit the church 3 different times, the last time I went to the tent outside saying first time guest. We stepped over there and even though I brought a friend, not any of the 8 greeters even said Hi to us. Greeters? Wouldn't that mean they need to greet you? I waited and then decided they were to busy talking with each other to bother with me. The worship was good, the message was good. But the people not friendly at all. I asked my young friend who was with me what did he think about the church? He said well they aren't a community church, it's not like they are reaching out to those around you. But it was nice it was like, COME GET YOUR CHURCH ON AND LEAVE. He was spot on, people only wanted to attend services and not get involved in anyone's lives. Home means I know people have my back and are concerned with what is going on in my life. I guess I'm not home, so I will keep looking. I would say it's great for people who are visiting because they don't need to connect. They just need to get their church on and leave. read more

Freshman year at Baylor this church basically rounds up every freshman and gets them to attend their service lol. I had a lot of friends to liked Antioch for the first couple of years they went. I on the other hand did not. The people were nice (to the point it seemed kind of fake) but It just wasn't the place for me. Now I am Catholic, but I would go to Non Denominational churches a lot in Waco b/c to me, Christian is Christian. The people at Antioch kind of acted like I was a heathen the moment they found out I was Catholic lol They even tried to "convert me to christianity" even though I told them I was Catholic and a Catholic is a christian. I even had a couple tell me Catholic's weren't true Christians, whatever that means. I felt a lot of the people were pushy and trying to change who you were. It also seems all they are concerned about is how many people they converted that week. One time me and my friend organized our own little brown bag lunch and supply thing for some of the homeless people around campus. We just made sandwiches, added some chips, pretzels, crackers, water, bandaids, poncho, chapstick...just basically anything to help out some of the homeless people around Baylor. We passed them out to the people we found and just told them it was something to help them out and have a nice day. They were very appreciative. Well, a couple of Antiochers we knew said what we were doing wasn't in the "christianly way" because we didn't talk about the lord with them, therefore what we did didn't matter in the eyes of the lord. Ok now first off, I wasn't doing this to get God's attention, I did this because I saw people needed help and weren't getting it and it was a little something I could do to help. Secondly, how sad is that when people only are allowed to do something good for the community if they are doing it for recognition? Whether be it from God or anyone else? Anyways, I find many of the people at Antioch to be very unchristianly christian, meaning, they will love their brother and sister IF that brother or sister is the spick and span christian the Antiocher thinks they should be. They will give to the community IF they are able to convert you and get recognition and bragging rights in the process. It seems everything they do needs to benefit them somehow and that just really puts me off. Antioch is pretty much a joke on the Baylor campus, many people call it a cult. I thought that was kind of harsh at first, but the more you learn about the place it almost comes off that way, even though I don't think that is their intensions. Even my friends who initially went to Antioch said after a while they kind of started noticing how "cultish" it kind of was and left and went to other parishes. Sorry I don't mean to bash the Antioch Parish and I in no way am saying they ALL are like this. This is just from my experience. read more

I've seen the church go through lots of changes - mostly growing pains - but through it all they are consistent in their mission and genuinely passionate for Jesus. Antioch is the most loving caring church I have ever attended. They truly love the Lord. I have never seen so many young people on fire for God. They truly are Bible filled Christians. Amazing church for families and young adults! Great worship too! People really love Jesus and are just normal folks living for Him.

I would be careful with this church, they may be passionate about missions, but they are also very judgmental of people who may think differently (yes, this includes other Christians) and even tell members not to date that person because "they're a bad influence" or things like that. I had this happen to me twice by a lifegroup leader, I was the person they didn't want members dating because I was previously married but it didn't matter that I was getting out because it was abusive. As far as they were concerned, I was sinning. I did the whole discipling thing, refuge, early morning prayer, lifegroup, etc, and that wasn't even good enough for them that they shunned me like that. Please consider before becoming a member. Just look at how they run things and see if they don't micromanage you or your kid if they go there during college.
