Antique Cupboard/Antique Silver of Waukesha gave a very fair price AND excellent service - had my check within a week of sending the silverware in the mail. I had no idea how to sell silverware but knew I did not want to sell it on Ebay... so here's what I did- Step #1: Before even getting quote at ANY store (step 2) figure out what the scrap metal silver content is by using a free app like coinapps.com in computer. First weigh your silverware WITHOUT the dinner knives in grams (convert to grams), then weigh dinner knives separately (select silver, then sterling since sterling is typically 92.5% silver...take 1/4 the weight of dinner knives since approximately only 1/4 of a knife is silver. The blade is usually stainless steel & the handle is filled with gypsum/etc). #2 See if your silverware has intrinsic value outside of the scrap value. You can look it up & look at sellers - if they have a lot of your pattern - probably not a good sign! Remember EBAY sellers jack up prices in hopes that someone will grab it - doesn't mean it sells. Plus, most silverware sets in general don't have the same "value" as they did years ago because let's face it - most "kids" don't want their parent's silverware/china - too much upkeep! Step #2: Go to some silverware/gold buyers storefronts & perhaps antique dealers to get quotes (I went to 5 just to see how varied prices were - varied by 250 dollars - of course all were below scrap price which is to be expected - as they need to make $$ too). #4 Then checked out a few online dealers. Antique Cupboard gave me the best quote by $ 30 of the 2 online dealers & $75 over the actual storefronts AND they reimbursed for shipping. #5 Also, if you don't have to or want to sell right away - you may want to wait until silver prices go up because you will get a better price. All dealers know the spot price of silver on that day. Kind of fun to "play the market" which is what they do too. Quite a long-winded review - but wish someone had these steps BEFORE I started my quest! LOL! Bottom-line - Antique Cupboard did well by me - I would not hesitate to do business with them again. Yes, they have every pattern imaginable. Yes, their prices are crazy. This store is for the desparate and uninformed. Long story short, I called (Spring 2018) posing as a buyer of a full set of stainless flatware, they quoted me a very HIGH price to purchase. After getting that quote I immediately said (to the owner, Phil) "I am actually selling that set". Silence.......then he quoted me a very fair price to purchase it. I said "great", and sent him an email to confirm our conversation and price. By the time I sent the email and called him back he said that he was no longer interested in the set at that price (that was about thirty minutes later). By this time, his quote to purchase dropped by $600 (yes, really) You be the judge and try my technique if you are a seller of a popular (in demand) flatware. They think the customer is too stupid to know anything about silver. I some years ago, purchased a carving set in Frontenac by SHM. It was sold with the old carbon blade and tines, which I was happy to have. Between the time I paid for the set, and when it was received, they had plated the items, so no more o c. More recently, I purchased two fruit spoons in Old Colony by Rogers. They were supposed to have had gold washed bowls, hoping to match the other six already in my set. They were not. Called and spoke to Patricia in web sales. Was told that a mailing label would be sent for a correction of the pieces. It has yet to arrive. Once she understood that the items were silver plate, her attitude changed. She though I meant Old Colonial by Towle. So even thought I had chosen items with gold washed bowls and had a paid receipt showing the same, I got the opposite. Customer service is awful. They really do think they know much more than the customer. If you are looking to complete your set, try Ebay. The prices are much better and because of their strict rules regarding citing a complete and accurate description of items, this issue very seldom comes up. BUYER BEWARE!!!!! read more

There website goes into a long description of why a matching service is better than other avenues. Just to do a sanity check, I went to a local coin shop, which the Antique Sterling website says is a bad option for sellers, and received a quote 25% higher than Antique Cupboard. Perhaps they provide a service for people looking for matching pieces, but I would take a hard look at other resources if you're looking for an outlet to sell silverware for a decent price. read more

Is it worth it? No, but I can ask that. Antique cupboard will pay you very close to what you could realize on eBay for desirable patterns with no hassle, no problems with dissatisfied buyers, and a check which will clear the bank. As a highly experienced collector of antique silver, I would say that two words more than any other capture the essence of Antique Cupboard: GROSSLY OVERPRICED. Much like Replacements, Antique Cupboard relies for its business on the ignorant and INexperienced, who do not realize that far more affordable alternatives are available for most of the items it sells. Otherwise, who would ever pay these fantasy prices? Beyond that critical issue, this business will not cheat you in any way. It is honest, if you are willing to pay through the nose. A few other gripes: Their photos are horrible. Tiny. How could anyone possibly make a thousand-dollar-plus decision based on a single, tiny, grainy photo? And yet, people do. Amazing. Even more irritating is the statement accompanying the photo that the item pictured may not even be the item available! Some of the items their website represents as being in stock are not. Try to buy it, and you may get an email informing you, that, regrettably, the item is no longer in stock. The website is careless with details of spelling and accuracy, too. And very little information is actually provided. Brief, terse, useless descriptions. And the troy weight of items, an important consideration in any silver purchase as a mark of quality, is totally glossed over. As a silversmith specializing in restoration, conservation, and preservation, I like polishing the silver myself in order to match what my customers own. The sales rep is letting thousands of dollars slip through the owner's fingers. To make a very long story short, I tried to buy a large set of Tiffany silver flatware. He sent me a spreadsheet. I called him with questions. He said the pieces "may be gone," and he would have to check. I got no call back. I then asked questions by email, and got no response. I waited for weeks. Here's the kicker: the pieces he said he didn't have, I bought from him through eCrate (after he said he didn't have them). I spent twice as much with a competitor for other pieces. I called today in curiosity. He said the "owner isn't really reachable", and therefor he never knows what the inventory is. In this last discussion, he sounded a bit, um, impaired. My partner and I have placed two orders with Antique Cupboard over the past few years. The first order was for several pieces of flatware that were advertised as having no monograms. We received pieces with obvious monogram removals, and had to return the entire lot. The second order was for a discontinued, high-end, handmade sterling pattern. The quoted prices were extremely high, but we bit the bullet and ordered anyway, negotiating a best price for about 40 pieces of sterling flatware to almost complete a large set in this pattern. The silver we received was heavily used - and even abused, exhibited pattern wear, had lots of nicks and deep scratches, and had numerous dents in the knife handles. It was about the worst condition of any items of this pattern I had seen in over 30 years of collecting the pattern. It was certainly not worth the price paid, and, most definitely, not worth the original prices quoted. We returned about 85% of the order because of quality issues. We sent a detailed list of what was being returned and why. Two days after USPS tracking information informed us that package was delivered, we emailed asking about the return. I was told it was being processed through PayPal and would take 4 - 5 days. A check of our PayPal account shows the refund amount to be incorrect. Another email was sent asking for an accounting of the refund amount. The accounting received had the number of pieces returned incorrect. Another email was sent, to which we received a reply of "OK, I'll adjust". No apology, no explanation. And this was from one of the owners who has a principal stake in the company, not from some minimum wage customer service rep! So, after being out a lot of time, inconvenience, and shipping charges, I don't feel I can recommend Antique Cupboard. Their ethics and values are not what I expect when purchasing high-end, high-dollar merchandise. If value and customer service are important in your discretionary spending decisions on tabletop and antique items, this is not the place to spend your money. My experience was the same as Josie K. Antique Cupboard accepted my offer for an item, charged my credit card, and then informed me later that the item was no longer in stock. They refused to credit my account without a hassle, telling me to rectify their mistake by going through Paypal. (I don't often use Paypal, and could not remember my password.)
