The most hole-in-the-wall of hole-in-the-walls, with some awesome food. Like a lot of Latin America, they eat a lot of white rice, beef, pork, and plantains. They also have mashed red beans in a sort of potaje, but they added cheese curds on top, which was an I treating twist. They also serve three different kinds of Gotchas, which was news to me. For a to-go box of Carne Asada and a big cup of gotchas, it cost me $13. Not as inexpensive as I was expecting, but the food was very, very good, and it was super filling. Sometimes you gotta just dig deep for the hidden treasures... Sifting through all the tex-mex and wanna-be mexican restaurants, the adventurous few stumble upon this little beauty of a food joint. This place is focused on specializing in HONDURAN food. The restaurant itself is pretty tiny and accommodates about twenty people max (5-6tables.) I heard about this little hidden treasure through some friends, its definitely a dive in every sense of the word. The area is a shady part of town but it's worth the small detour out of our monotonous routine. The service was good (slightly awkward at times) but very friendly atmosphere. The waitress took her time to explain the menu, slowly and carefully, recommending several favorites and specialites of the house. The price of this place is very cheap (about $5-$8 a plate) My absolute favorite that BLEW my socks OFF was the fried plantains with fried chicken. The Honduran-style fried chicken was to die for. I get weak at the knees for good fried food, this fried chicken was cooked to perfection, it had unique breading and was PERFECTLY seasoned, providing a flavorful piece of meat. Additionally this chicken was doused in a tasty "honey mustard" flavor type sauce that brought an amazing contrast. This was all served over a bed of fried plantains and lettuce. This is one of those meals that just makes your palate go off the charts because of the unique flavors. There was some consistency problems but they'll get those kinks out. We also ordered a grilled beef plate, perfectly seasoned but WAY over cooked. It came with black refried beans and rice with fresh avocado slices and some pico de gallo type mixture. My other friend ordered another dish (I forget the name) but it looked sort of like curry, it had a pickled slight vinegar taste, they paired it with a refreshing beet and cabbage salad. Great contrast and idea. You have your choice of fried plantains or flour tortillas, I totally loved the fried plantains, crispy but not too crispy. This place is definitely worth the shady drive to this location. I've never had Honduran food or was told what it tasted like, but if this dish is a representation of what Honduran food represents. read more

The place is definitely a hole in the wall and pretty small. There were two waitresses. My brother and I definitely felt out of place because we did not speak spanish and the signs are in spanish too. Good thing the meny was bilingual however. The funny part was that when we went to order our food, the waitress did not know any english, so she got one of the cooks to come and take our order. The prices were very reasonable and cheap in fact and they give you a lot of food. Service was terribly slow and so was the getting the food and definitely not worth the wait. It took them 30 minutes and it was not busy at al. We got the fried chicken, but not the orange sauce on it unfortunately and that is something I really wanted to try. Anyways the bananas were good and so were the side dishes, however they definitely messed up on the meat (asada and chicken), it was terribly dried and needed a lot of water. Anyways I felt that the fried chicken at KFC was much better than that crap. The wait for the food was not worth the wait. We left disapointed and we never want to eat here again. This place is a nice little hidden gem. The staff's English is shaky at best but the menu is printed in Spanish with the English translation below. The service can be kind of slow sometimes but that is more a function of the kitchen than the waitstaff. At least you know your plate was made to order. #18 and #2 are my favorite dishes. If I knew more Spanish you would have the name of the dishes up now. Oh and more importantly I found on my last visit there that they now take debit and credit cards with a minimum of a $10 order. "Antojitos" translates roughly as "cravings." We found that we still had plenty of antojitos after our meal. Lets see ... sad, dingy, unhappy staff, slow.... there was this whole vibe of indifference. Oh ... and my food? Lets just say that I was unpleasantly surprised to discover that their version of chicharones, which can be a delicious pork dish, was instead opening a bag of fried pork rinds over a bed of shredded cabbage and dousing it in taco sauce. Up until recently, the only places I could find Honduran food were in Honduras and a little place on Spring Valley and Coit in Dallas. Thanks to the Austin Chronicle and my brother living on the EAst Side, I am in Catracho heaven! Antojitos has got to be one of my all time favourite restaurants in Austin. Boyfriend and I went on our first date here and we return every time we have a bad meal somewhere else (i.e. when I cook). Plantains and beans with cream, baleadas, tamales de elote, and carne asada are totally awesome. They also sell Honduran goods such as Naturas frijoles, Don Julio spices, juices and sodas, and pastries. The staff has always been good to us and the prices are decent. This place is hiding in your face. It's right off of the 183 feeder but I'd have never thought to go here. Some friends were going so we tagged along. Glad we were going with veterans because the English in the place was not around. Ordering would have been impossible. Our friend explained to us what was on the menu and everyone ordered. I got to sample the baleades, tamales honduren, and the pollo con tajadas. The baleades is a mix between a quesadilla and a taco. Much bigger than a taco and served filled with things but almost served flat. Really good and if you get there for the special they are ridiculously cheap. The tamales were a spin on your typical tamales but I don't recall anything fancy about them. The pollo was con tajadas was awesome. It's a Honduran chicken salad with lettuce, rotisserie chicken, and a special dressing. Really good mix with some good chicken. I forget the night of the special (Wednesday or Tuesday) but if you can make it. it's more than worth the drive. read more

Got the seafood soup in coconut milk to go; container had a cracked lid and was not covered in plastic so had a lot of liquid leak into the bag. Container was mostly filled with a small whole crab that had no meat, and "krab" slices with some other slimy fish pieces of some sort. Most of it went into the trash. Be sure you can speak some Spanish if you frequent this place because they certainly don't speak English. read more

This is great for some tradicional food from Honduras. There are sometimes when they never have all the option on the menus that are out on some item but items are still visibles on the menus by the time you are ready to place your order they said sorry we are out or we do t serve that anymore. Another problem is when you send something back to the kitchen they are not that good fixing the issues My food was not good on flavor they claim that's the way how their food taste but I been to this place before so I tried same dish before and I know what I'm talking about. I highly recommend the steak dish featured on the menu, the red beans (they use red beans instead of black beans which is traditional in Honduras), baliadas, and their fried plantains. This is my go to place when I get the craving for some fried plantains and my favorite here Baleadas. Baleadas is what I crave when I am just not in the mood for breakfast tacos. They have the simple Baleada which is just a thick delicious flour tortilla with re-fried beans, a mix of some sort of cheese and sour cream. I always order the special Baleada, which has all the same ingredients as a simple but the special comes with chunks of pork meat and it is amazing!!! I do recommend visiting this place with someone that speaks Spanish. I am a fluent Spanish speaker and even then, sometimes I feel a little lost do to the difference in the culture and cuisine terminology. But The food makes it all worth it, so at the end it doesn't really matter, you will still walk out with great tasting food! =)) read more

I really wanted to like this place ... but left feeling slightly disappointed and unsure of whether or not I would return. First off the place is very small, dingy, and in a small shopping center next to knappy or knot. The atmosphere is Walmart automotive waiting room meets abuelas kitchen. The service was slow, only 2 girls serving the floor and what appeared to be two cooking in the back. We had the fried chicken with plantains and the carne asada plate. The chicken had potential to be delicious. It was fried with a really tasty breading, but the cheapest cut you can buy. It was a fried leg quarter sitting on top of a bed of cabbage and coated with an orange mayo-y type sauce. Next time I would def get the sauce on the side. The carne asada was overcooked and appeared to have been prepared the day before. It did come on a nice plate with rice, beans, avocado, and pickled cabbage. Some of the other food coming out looked amazing so I wonder if we just didn't order well. Oh, the plates had mounds of yummy fried plantains which led me to 3 stars instead of two. read more

We ate here last night after reading about this restaurant in The Austin Chronicle. I was very pleased with the food and the service. Our waitress was a beautiful spanish speaking woman who was new to the job. She went out of her way to make us feel comfortable. We ordered the hondurean tamales and they were delicious with the finest corn masa, chicken, potatoes and pork. Very yummy. We also ordered shrimp in coconut sauce that came with cabbage and beet salad and white rice and a chicken dish in a tomato sauce that was very delicious also. The only disappointment were the plaintains. They were served plain and were tasteless. Later we found out that they do fry them but you have to request that. It helps to know Spanish here because the entire menu was in spanish. Anyway I would still go there again and try other dishes and definitely get those tamales again. read more

I loved baleadas when I was a kid, but I hadn't had one since I've been in the U.S. They are sooo good!
