My family and I were on our way to Austin but stopped by in the Houston area for lunch. We found this place and it was def a great find. The Carne Asada my husband ordered was flavorful and the pupusas I ordered were big and delicious! They also had a dessert that I had not eaten since I was 7. This is probably one of my favorite Salvadoran restaurants in Houston. Their menu is expansive - offering pupusas, soups, seafood, parilladas... If you're new to Salvadoran food, you can't go wrong with the pupusa plate, which comes with two pupusas of choice, tamale of your choice and fried plantains or fried yuca. If you want to eat on the lighter side, the fried mojara plate with rice and salad is a solid choice - the whole fish was cooked perfectly and could easily feed 2-4 people. Salsa wasn't too spicy; curtido (cabbage salad) was great. The tortillas are homemade, too! Aguas frescas, beer, and micheladas are some bevs of choice. My grandmother loved the agua de jamaica; and the michelada mix was good. Wasn't expecting a Salvadoran restaurant to offer up a good michi. Cash and credit are both accepted. Menu has food photos, so no worries about any language barrier. Food comes out hot and fast. For those commenting on it being a rough neighborhood ... how so? The food is great. Pupusas that are not greasy. Crisp curtido. Tamal elotes that tasted like you're processing the kernels on the spot. Prices are reasonable. It's in rough location, and the area is quiet which bothers me more than a place where foot and car traffic are busy like the Gulfton area. The place itself was clean, and quiet for a Saturday evening which reflected the neighbourhood. No one on their staff spoke English though so ordering was somewhat confusing as I puzzled over how plaintains were fried besides "normal". I can't believe I haven't eaten here until recently. I love pupusas and missed eating them ever since I moved from Los Angeles. I am SO thankful this is near our home because it is hands down one of the best pupusas I've had. I ordered 3 pupusas- 1 frijoles con queso and 2 revueltas. They were all delicious, flavorful, and hit the spot. They were also huge- like the size of my hand. You definitely get a good deal with their reasonable prices. 10/10 recommend and will be going back soon! read more

The food is very badly cooked. My pupusa was burnt in some spots. The rice was flavorless and cold. And the pupusa sauce was basically water with a hint of tomato. The service was rude. The BF picked this place out and it was great!!! In fact, I am noticing that when he picks a restaurant it is good and when I pick it is hit or miss..... I ordered the Special A platter which came with Fried Yucca (and some fried pork), a chicken or corn tamale--I opted for the corn, and 2 pupusas--I had the Loroco/Cheese (Salvadorian exotic veggie & cheese) and the Revueltas (pork & cheese). Pupusas came with cabbage and some kind of really good red sauce. I didn't much care for the Loroco pupusas as it didn't have much flavor, but the Pork was EXCELLENT! Fried Yucca--Meh, not so much. It was like a French fry and the pork was really tough. But the Corn tamale was great! I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch, and am already planning on when I am coming back and what I am going to eat!!! :-D read more

Oh man, those pupusas were so delicious. The bean and cheese one, I had really low expectations, but man it was so good. It had a lot of umami flavor and the right balance between the beans and the cheese. The pupusa "special" that had a lot of different mixes was excellent. It went really well with their house-made tomato sauce and pickled cabbage. We also tried the chicharron pupusa that was fatty goodness. While I would not drive 20 minutes for a special trip out here, I did really enjoy the meal. 4 stars for being a fairly special hole-in-the-wall kind of place. Literally, a 5 minute walk away. One of the few places consistently opened during Hurricane Harvey. My mother-in-law and I used to come here all the time before she passed (she loved the pupusas). I have been here a handful of times- food was consistent, service prompt, decent prices. I would give 4 stars, but on this occasion, deduct 1 for the greedy response during hurricane Harvey. I went in requesting a lettuce and tomato salad and was told that they could not sell it to me and it had to keep if to keep the business going. Wow, even after offering to pay I was refused. This is the only Salvadorian spot in this area. Desperately wanted pupusas and sopa de mondongo. The soup is literally just water, no rice, maybe 1 stick or carrot and 2 pieces of mondongo. I went up to the counter to ask for a lime since they never cared to check up on me (and I came alone and it's empty today) and the lady, who was literally blowing her nose, handed me a lime. After reading the reviews I was hesitant because people mentioned bad area multiple times. Well Im a Flight Attendant and I didnt consider this a bad area. Just a typical Latin neighborhood like the one I grew up in. My friend was driving from North Houston and I was driving from Clear Lake to go to the Catholic Charismatic Center which is 6 minutes away, so we decided to meet for dinner first. Great service, great food, and I felt safe. There were people going in and out with to go orders, people sitting at the counter, and I felt very welcome. I got the Especial B with 2 pupusas, a tamale and the fried bananas. Very good and big portion. Having leftovers for lunch now. I absolutely recommend it, especially if you are in the area to go to Mass at the Charismatic Center. read more

Plantains are pronounced Pla-tan-os....I did not try the Plantain empanandas, but might next time..They have 2 kinds of tamales..chicken and corn..in case one might be confused and think that they are just chicken and corn tamales...Elote..(sp?) are the corn ones.. The cheese pupusa with exotic vegetables (as it is explained on the menu)..is rich and yummy..one is a meal (for me), and the exotic vegetables come out in a big container, and it resembles cole slaw, The chips and salsa were served sparingly, but I thought that they were good...the place emitted a pleasant vibe..don't go there expecting fancy..it is not a yuppie dive...they do have quite a reasonable beer menu...and the horchata was interesting and slightly unconventional. read more
