They offer the standard group exercises, my one gripe is the yoga times do not work well with my schedule. Speaking of times, I also wish they had longer hours for the weekend, considering that you pay a premium for the Platinum gym. The pool is warm and good for a few laps. There is a sauna by the pool, which is shared by males and females. It is a bit uncomfortable for me because some guys go in the sauna from the pool with their swimming trunks and lie on the benches a bit too comfortably, it just makes me a bit fidgety and uncomfortable. Or maybe I'm just being too much of a prude. In the ladies locker room, there is a steam room but I've found it to be unappealing because I've seen hairs on the tiles. Like most gyms, you get a fair bit of muscly guys who look like they're just there to show off but generally the crowd here is pretty decent. There is a lounge area near the front with iMacs and free wifi. They also have a play zone for kids but I've never really seen any kids in there.

It's such a relief to get away from nasty corporate gyms like FF and all the rest. UTS Fitness Centre isn't just for university students and staff - anyone can join, and the rates are much cheaper than corporate gyms. It's super cheap for me because I'm a student and a student union member (good tip to remember if you are a UTS student: join the union!) At UTS Fitness no one will push you to sign up for personal training, no one will come up and bother you about your weight or fitness goals (unless you want them to), and there is a wide variety of membership types (including 1 month and 6 month things). The change rooms are small and crowded, and this gym can be a little grotty at times. But to me it feels like home, so this doesn't bother me ... The equipment is generally of a very good standard. A quick run-down on the classes: anything run by Dian, Kirrily or Patricia will be ace. Carly's Super Circuit class is also great, and Carol does a relaxing (but sometimes quite challenging) yoga class on Saturday mornings. Guy's boxing classes are pretty solid, but Kashi's boxing classes freak me out. Suspension is an amazing class (using TRX cables and a lot of body-weight strength work) - turn up early because this one is popular. There is also a new(ish) kettlebell circuit class which is great. A lot of these classes really work on functional fitness, and can be catered to a wide variety of fitness levels, and adapted to take into account injuries, and the like. There is a bit of Les Mills (Body Attack, Body Pump), but it's not all Les Mills stuff. Oh, one thing, this is not a great gym if you like doing your training on the weekends. It closes on Saturdays at 3, and isn't open on Sundays.

What I love about this gym is that there are no roid munching weight lifting types that make you feel intimidated. No Gym Princesses, and no fakery. Everyone Ive met who goes to Hips is a lovely genuine person. The Best thing about it though, is that once youre a paid up member, you can go to pretty much any of the classes for free. Pump, Bootcamp (go on do it) box fit.. pilates.. yoga... Recently renovated, they've managed to fit in a heap more machines. Treadmills, eliptical striders. cross ramps, rowing machines, bikes, stair climbers. and a full range of weights. Owner Richard is genuinely interested in how you are traveling with your fitness goals, will get to know you personally, and is dedicated to running some of the classes such as Boot camp. I was made to feel like i belonged from the get go. The coaches are dedicated, friendly, enthusiastic and FIT. They have the ability to read and assess each member individually and program and coach according to this. You just dont get this anywhere else. The variety of workouts is what will keep you going back. In the 1 1/2 years i have been attending i cant remember doing the same workout twice. Variety, working different muscle groups, high intensity, short duration- these are the elements that get results. I was never a really big person, but i loss 7 kgs, developed muscle tone and finally have a sense of pride about the way i look. I have never felt like this before. Whether you are just looking to get fit, learn to be able to lift weight, climbs ropes, double under, triple under, muscle up, kip, back flip, handstand walk or go to the world championships i would hands down recommend CrossFit Brookvale.
