Pretty nice, bring your own targets and ammo and give it a rip. Be courteous and respectful and nobody will have a problem with you.

Wort the Trip, it's a bit remote Bring your own stuff ( food and water ). The bathroom are what you would think being so remote, I go in the morning when its cooler. I shoot my flintlock muzzleloader ( can't shoot it indoors ) and bring my 87 year old dad just to keep him sharp and he really enjoys it. Apalachicola Public Shooting range is pretty decent. It is free which is awesome but definitely be prepared for the ride. You have to take an unpaved road for what seems like an eternity to get there. The road is not very maintained and if you have a car that's a bit low to the ground you will have to do quite a bit of maneuvering. The range seemed to far down the dirt road that I considered just turning around. With that being said, if you have the option to drive an SUV or a Truck - definitely go for it. You'll make it with a car but it'll just be a tad frustrating. Remember, this range is unsupervised and while I did have a good experience I probably would not return due to the inconvenience of the location. The only outdoor free public shooting range in Tallahassee (that I know). Don't be scared to be with nature. This range is a few miles inside of the forest and pretty remote. I've always seen friendly people, but why not bring a friend and make sure that your phones are fully charged before heading out - then pray that you have service. Range has select days for rifles, handguns, and competition shooting. Also be aware of the pre hunting season when ranges get more active. The only down side (which is also what I love about the place) is the open location. The roads are suspect-able to Tallahassee's random rainstorms which is followed by nasty bugs. In addition there isn't a fully manned service station so make sure to grab snacks, earplugs, and ammunition before heading over. I've had enough camping trips where I've learned to hold my bladder so I'll continue to avoid the bathrooms. (If you've gone to camp ... it's like camp). Lastly Google gives crappy directions 1. Head SOUTH on Lake Bradford Rd (It turns into Springhill Rd) and then to County Rd 2203 (After you cross over Capital CircleSW) for about 6.5 miles *(There will be a very small gas station on your LEFT - this is your LAST stop for drinks, snacks, earplugs, etc before you get to the range) ~~ about 2/3 miles from range 2. Make a RIGHT at Tom Roberts Rd (you should see a burgundy sign that says National Forrest Shooting Range) 3. If you live local this place is awesome, doesn't get much better then a free outdoor gun-range in your area in a beautiful rural place.

We've been here 4 times on a Friday or Saturday. Its not been all that busy at any given time. There are approx 6 areas for individual shooters on either side of the covered area for shooters. On the east side 4 targets set at 50yds & 2 set at 100 yds. NO SHOTGUNS ALLOWED EVER. Just about any other size is allowed. We've shot .22, 223, 30cal, 762 x 54R & 308. The west side has 4 areas for handgun/pistol shooters. 4 targets set at 15yds. Theres a couple of open areas where Ive seen other shooters place their own "in the ground metal frames" with their own targets further down the range. They have 2 outhouse style restrooms set in a cement or sinder block style building. Better than hiking into the woods to do your business. No water faucets or food vending machines, so be sure to bring yourself something to drink/eat. And more than likely you wont have cell phone service. Also bring a staplegun &/or thumbtacks, your own targets, earplugs or shooting earmuffs, eye protection & optional would be masking tape (to cover holes in your targets so you can reuse them several times). read more

It really doesn't get any better than this - for a free course, at least. The Apalachicola Shooting Range is out in the bush a bit, but it's worth the drive given the lack of affordable alternatives in the area - that is, unless you want to pay a premium for an indoor shooting range or take the time and money to join a private gun club with its own range. There are some great options in the Panhandle for that, but they are expensive for the casual shooter. This is an unsupervised range, but like anywhere you shoot, you need to bring eye protection, ear protection (for everyone in your group, as soon as you step out of the car, if others are there, it is LOUD), ammo (duh), targets, something to attach your targets to the board, and your gun(s), in its case, not stuffed down your pants. There are two sides to the range - pistol on the left and rifle on the right. Pretty sure there is no rapid fire at any time. The shooting area is covered, and you can sit down. There are also both men's and women's outhouse-style restrooms, so al;l the comforts of home. As long as you understand the basic safety rules of firearms you will be fine. During my most recent weekend visit, it was quite crowded and everyone worked together to make sure the range went "cold" occasionally so that we could all go down and check our targets out attach new ones. It's really one of the best ranges I've been to around here. I really hate shooting at an indoor range where the rangemaster is watching over you like a hawk - I grew up in the country where there were very few rules when shooting, outside of basic common-sense safety rules that apply universally. It can be a bit tricky to get to the range. Highly recommend you visit the range website or follow the directions posted by the other reviewer. It's worth the journey if you want an affordable shooting experience near Tallahassee. read more

For a free outdoor range it's decent. It's probably about 1-2miles off of the main roads. I've taken a car on multiple occasions but would not recommend if there had been any rain recently. The range works I recommend that you bring water as there is no water source. There are two restroom stalls there, septic and generally not clean but it provides more privacy than the neighboring woods. The range has two main sections a short range and a longer range. The long range couldn't be more than 200m and the short range long for any close pistol work (believe it starts at about 20-25ft or so) All in all its a good range, very important to police your own and remain mindful of other shooters and their potential lack of experience. It is in the best traditions of an American Shooting Range, taxpayer supported, cleaned up regularly, and for the most part the shooters are aware of the basic rules while on a range. There is also usually someone to point out the rules if someone is unsure. Having the actual shooting area covered is great as it keeps the sun and rain of your shooting station. It is also neat to pass bear, hawks and other animals on the dirt road that takes you to the range. read more

Only FREE public range in Tallahassee. Its in the middle of the forest, but don't be scared to head out there. Its a very nature good drive. Take Spring Hill road. You will pass a gas station and soon start seeing signs to your right directing you to the range. Follow the signs as it keeps you on paved road for the longest. Highly recommend driving a truck or SUV out here as its pretty bumpy. Very quiet and low key place. Hours are a bit odd but during the week there is rarely anyone there. If you go on the weekend, be prepared to wait to get a spot because its busy. They have a couple of older gentleman out there most of the time to make sure rules are followed and everyone gets along. Never had any problems. Great range, well kept. Take plenty of water or snacks, and anything else you might want if you plan to be out there for a while. They have bathrooms buts basically like a porta potty. Love it here and great range! Check it out. read more

I have used this range for 30 years. It is pretty remote and the roads can be not in the best of shape. I always go in a truck, 4X4 would be even better. It is a nice range. Updated a few years ago. Pretty well maintained. Be sure to check hours of operation. Currently closed Monday and Friday mornings and select weekends for hunter training classes. There are posted rules for everyone's safety. It is unfortunate that there are those who ignore them. I have driven the 20 miles to get there and not even gotten out of my vehicle and left. There is that occasional know-it-all who will do whatever he wants regardless of everyone else's well being. You also get the show offs and those that never shot before or had any training. But, most shooters are well behaved and knowledgeable. I would avoid gun show weekends. Bring your own hearing and eye protection, ammo, bug spray, paper targets and tape, tacks or staple gun. Basic restrooms. Have fun but be safe. (The hospital is far away.) read more
