Many years ago, I went to law school with a lady from Germany. Post graduation, she moved back to Germany. When I visited Frankfurt, we got to hang out. She recommended Apfelwein Wagner so we stopped by for dinner. Ambiance (5/5): This is where this traditional German restaurant shines. The building in which it is housed has some awesome art on the exterior. Once you get inside, there's an open air area that makes you feel like you're outside but your'e actually inside. I recommend sitting here. It's lively and the design is awesome. In the back of the restaurant, you'll find an indoor area. Service (2.5/5): European service tends to be lackluster, but our service experience was a little below even that standard. We had to track our waiter down several times. Overall, quite slow. Drinks (4/5): If you can't tell by the name, Apfelwein Wagner specializes in apple wine. The largest size is served in beautiful handmade blue and white carafes. I personally am not a fan of apple wine, but it's definitely worth trying. Instead, I went with a beer or two. You can't go wrong with that in Germany. Food (3/5): They have several schnitzels (different meats) served with potatoes and green sauce (another Frankfurt specialty). You can't really mess this one up. For my first time in Frankfurt, I am so happy I decided to check out the locally-recommended Apfelwein Wagner. The ambiance is German to a T, it's full of Frankfurt locals, Germanic art, wooden benches and fun energy. I got the side salad and Schnitzel with creamy mushroom sauce, paired with home-fried potatoes. The side salad was delicious. The vegetables were crispy and fresh, while the red wine vinaigrette was tangy and delicious. The schnitzel I ordered was beyond delicious. I've never had authentic German food like this schnitzel. The breading was light, salty and savory, with the pork being tender yet filling. The mushroom sauce was decadent and creamy and absorbed perfectly into the breading. The potatoes also offered a good amount of starchiness which balanced the sauce level. Our waiter was kind, patient and gave us great advice as Americans in Frankfurt. read more

We were with local Frankfurters and we got half a table and a group of girls got the other half. It is a fun experience to share a table and stories. Food: got the pork knuckle. The pork knuckle was okay. The skin was too salty and the meat was a bit tough and hard to ge off the bone. It took work to get the meat off the bone but the flavor was good. I got a side of sauerkraut and that was delicious. The potato was okay but lacked some seasoning. My husband got the stuffed schnitzel and he said it was the best he had on our trip. It was unique for it to be stuffed. Dessert: got the hand cheese. It is sliced bread and butter and this cheese that is topped with onions. The server were pushing the "special": goose (while goose for 4 people) not on menu. We also ordered rindwurst (beef sausage, pork knuckle, spare ribs, veal schnitzel. The goose leg was yummy!, however, the grilled spare ribs were hard & dried as it has been deep fried after grilled. The knuckle also seemed to have flash fried after braised. When you are at Apfelwein Wagner, you really feel like you are in Germany. This is a classic spot for the famous apple wine and authentic German food. I ordered a homemade bratwurst with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes (12.90 EUR). For the price, the portion size was pretty large. It was a sizeable and good quality bratwurst. The mashed potatoes were just standard and I wasn't a huge fan of the sauerkraut though (just my personal preference). I also tried a non alcoholic apple wine (2.90 EUR), which was quite good - not just like apple juice, but with a sort of wine flavor even though it was a non-alcoholic version. Note that this restaurant gets super busy during peak times. I was lucky to get a spot without a wait because I went a bit on the early side but before long, the place was totally packed. Everyone had to share the large tables to fit. But that actually just added to the vibes and there was a buzzing atmosphere in there. The restaurant has a historic feel with all the plain wooden tables and German artwork / decor on the walls. It's a family run restaurant and you can tell the staff really care about the place - even though they are busy, the staff are still friendly and move quickly. Overall, Apfelwein Wagner is a really great place for an authentic German food (and apple wine) experience. Went here for dinner fairly early in the evening without reservations. They were able to seat us outside on the patio. The restaurant is huge with several dining sections and was busy and vibrant. We came for the green sauce and the apple wine. Neither disappointed. Glad they served it on the side. It was a nice addition to the schnitzel, but probably wouldn't order it regularly. The entire dining experience took a while, but made for a nice evening. My wife and I shared the entree, which I don't think the waiter appreciated. We knew the portions were huge and we had no way to take leftovers, so no reason to waste money or food. Lots of other entree options, so likely will go back next time we're in Frankfurt. read more

When we travel we ask a local for recommendations of best local restaurants to eat at. Not tourist traps. So that is how we stumble across this location. Ambiance great authentic German culture warm and inviting. Service fast and efficient only hick up our waitress did not speak or didn't want to speak English. We had to use google to translate the menu. With the assistance of other restaurants customers nearby we not only worked through the hiccup we found out. That they do not serve beer in this German restaurant. But ordering the Apple wine that they make on property in their cellars in the basement of the restaurant is highly recommended. You can order it by the glass or pitcher and if you want some bubbles in it just add a little sparkling water. We visited on Good Friday so we both ordered the baked fish the Friday special I got the potato salad my wife the fried home potatoes. Don't ask for French fries u r in Germany. Wow this place was one of the best on our entire trip to German. I still think about how good the food was. This place was packed. We had thankfully made a reservation and were sat right away. We had a booth and the restaurant was very much like an indoor beer garden vibe. We had to order the apfelwein. We got a pitcher to share and it was more than enough. When drinking it you add a little bit of sparkling water to it. I ordered the chopped steak with onions and potatoes. I dream about how good those potatoes and diced onions were. I think they're just understaffed and probably overworked, but we went inside to let the server know we wanted a table and he said okay for two? we said yes. He responded with "okay? (There's tables outside by the street - we just didn't see a server nearby those tables so that's why we walked all the way inside) and the server said "outside? May I ask why?" My friends and I ventured into Frankfurt for a half day to check the city out (we were staying in Mainz). We were told to go to Sachsenhausen to try some apfelwein, and so we stumbled upon this bar while it started to rain. While the man at the bar/cashier was a bit grumpy looking, the waitresses were very friendly and sat the group of us 8 in the glass covered area "outside." The bench seemed a bit precariously weighted down as there were so many of us sitting on it, but it held up and we all had a joyous time. We ordered a pitcher of the apfelwein and it was delicious! Some of us added sparkling water for additional bubbles. We also ordered some seasonal/traditional German foods, like the white asparagus (spargelzeit) and pork knuckle. We're all Americans and used to large portions, but we were all amazed at how big the portions were here! If you asked my group of friends what dish they would think most fondly of from our trip in Germany, many of us would say the white asparagus salad or pork knuckle! First time trying German food, and was so glad we came here because it was an absolutely fantastic introduction to the cuisine. Was able to come and get seated without any reservation and almost right away which was quite nice. The waiter was also absolutely fantastic as he was very jokey with the customers and was extremely friendly. Apfelwein Wagner markets itself as a gastropub but I would argue that it is more like a restaurant than a pub as the place is quite clean and has a lot of personalities. - Wagner's green sauce (seven different herbs) with hard-boiled eggs and home fried potatoes - At first this dish looks a little scary because you don't exactly know what the "green sauce" is, but it turned out to be legitimately the most delicious thing I've had on this trip. The sauce is essentially herbs and yogurt which was fantastic as it was quite light but still flavorful. Contrasted well with perhaps the best home fried potatoes I've ever had which had a lot of different seasoning on it. Went well with the hard-boiled egg which in contrast, had no flavor on it. - Crispy Pork Knuckle and Home Fried Potatoes - This is another traditional German food that Apfelwein is known for and when it first came, I thought the restaurant was joking because the pork knuckle was humongous! Side note: Something that has been really surprising to me about Germany is how big their portion sizes are. Honestly, might be even bigger than in the US. Regardless, the crispy pork skin was delicious with the layer of fat even though it congealed pretty quickly and the meat itself was very tender. The potatoes were fantastic as usual. I could really only finish 1/3 of this plate, definitely, two people could comfortably share this dish and feel full. - Apfelwein - The most surprising part of the whole meal was that they gave us apefelwein (apple beer) for free. It was quite good, not really bitter like normal beer. Doesn't have a whole ton of apple flavor though. Overall, fantastic experience at Apfelwein Wagner. Located in Sachsenhausen district, an area just south of the Main River, it is through a large Beer garden that guests navigate to the Restaurant itself, the presence of bilingual servers as well as menus most fortunate and a layout across two rooms offering plenty of space at one of several communal tables. Producing Apple Wine through an entirely organic process since 1931, and even offering the bottled Beverage via online website, it was with a 2€ glass in hand that choices were perused and appetite gauged, large portions and low prices no doubt an aspect of Wagner's appeal. Playing traditional music overhead, the heavily wooded space interestingly wrapped around a large tree growing at the center, it was with decisions made that a heavily tattooed server soon brought a bowl of Green Sauce, the sourness and Herbs more pronounced that what was served at Zum Eichkatzerl and the Apfelwein also better thanks to more crispness plus developed vinegary notes. Waiting perhaps fifteen minutes for Food, a pair of older Women fluent in English making conversation that unfortunately turned to American Politics, it was with good timing that two plates arrived simultaneously, the "Frankfurt Style" Pork Schnitzel more thickly breaded than some, perhaps to stand up to the Green Sauce, while Fried Potatoes were buttery, soft and liberally salted. This most recent experience again with a work trip with my two co-worker who have been trying to eat here. The second visit was as good as I remember. The restaurant is a popular destination for out of town era, seems like a lot of tourists, we hear from a lot of people that mention the need to check it out. A very historic, old-school restaurant opened since 1931. There are a lot of seats but it seemed like most tables were held under reservation. One dining room had four big tables reserved, but those tables remained unoccupied for the 1.5 hours that we were there. It also didn't help that patrons just seat themselves. We had to wander around and seek empty seats since all tables are communal. For appetizer, we had the handkas doppio which is homemade cheese with onions that you spread on bread. It is a very typical German dish to try and it wasn't particularly to my liking. It was very oily and I'm typically not a big fan of onions. To get our meal started, we also ordered a jug of apple wine, another typical German delicacy. Note, the apple wine is served with a bottle of water. You are supposed to fill half of your glass with apple wine and then mix in the water. The drink is similar to hard cider but it's less sweet and it has a sparkling texture. For my entree, I had the Frankfurt specialty, pork shank with rosemary potatoes. It is a huge portion that can easily be shared by two. Finishing it by myself required a strong effort and willpower that I did not have. The pork skin was roasted to a crisp texture and there was some slight fat under the skin. Locals say apple wine is a tradition and they are proud of it. DO NOT come here if you're craving a variety of beers. They only serve apple wine and other wines/champagnes. To our surprise, we liked the apple wine. It's definitely an acquired taste. I ordered the non-alcoholic one and my bf tried the regular. The nonalcoholic one tasted like apple juice, just not as sweet, and was surprisingly more expensive than the regular one. You can taste the crisp acidity in both apple wines. Food: We were impressed with the food portions. They were huge and I barely finished mine. I ordered the homemade bratwurst w/ sauerkraut and potato puree. My bf ordered schnitzel w/ their green sauce. Overall, food was okay, very filling but nothing was "standout" delicious-to-die-for. Tasty nonethless and worth the price. We were cooped up at the airport hotels due to all our business meetings happening near the hotel. However, one of my colleagues is from Germany so we asked him to set us up at a very casual place to dine and experience good local food. Apfelwein Wagner or Cider Wagner is pretty much a winebar like place with plenty of bench seating. The number one thing here is the Apple Wine and we ordered a jug of this along with sparkling water. My German colleague recommended that we put a bit of water in it. Very refreshing and very easy to drink. I can imagine in Summer this is a very nice drink and nearly as good as just sipping down some great watered down draft beer like PBR when you are in a US bar. The seating is crowded and in the restaurant it is noisy. We were "outside" but it was covered and in nice weather, they retract all the awnings and covers so you are truly outside. Fun, casual, plenty of food options. I took pictures of the english menu so you can see. Of course, I ordered the Pork Knuckle, and here it was the right size and very delicious! Tender and moist. The skin was just crispy and not overly tough as in some of the beer halls in Germany. My colleagues ordered a pork dish called Frankfurter Schnitzel with a special "green sauce" that is made from herbs in the region. Tasty. Another colleague ordered the Cabbage Roll with Mashed Potatoes and Cider Sauce. We were not quite sure of the meat, but believe it was pork. Definitely a Frankfurt speciality! The place was getting quite packed and our picnic table was getting filled with another party, locals out to eat with their huge and love sheep dog. Probably one of the rudest waiters and worst dining I've ever experienced in my life. The stage was set when we walked in and two waiters (one of which ended up being ours) were in a loud verbal argument right at the entrance of the restaurant, in front of lots of diners. It was as if we were infringing on his pleasant night experience by being customers there. He berated and somehow scolded us during our order, slammed dishes down on our table, took things away before people were finished, and ignored us when we wanted the bill. It was so bad, that a good-humored waiter had to come by several times to try and joke with us about his colleague being stressed. That same waiter tried to calm his colleague but ended up fighting with him just as we'd seen at the entrance. I've always gone to Zum Gemalten Haus, next door, because I'd heard about experiences like this. We went because of a farewell meal for a colleague and all these rumors were basically confirmed - and then some. On top of that, the food was bad, served cold and not corrected. Great food. Bad service. Decent prices. Visited the restaurant on my birthday and wanted to give it 5 stars for the food, but could not look past the mediocre (and that's being generous) service. Server took a long time to take our initial order and then made us feel rushed thereafter; didn't show any desire to assist in our ordering process, and was generally curt (while some may say that's a German thing, but I disagree). The restaurant has 2 outdoor section - garden in the back and curbside patio in the front of the house - and is very charming. We ordered apple wine (which was enjoyable enough but definitely an acquired taste if one is to love it), pork schnitzel with green sauce and home fried potatoes (their specialty) which was the best schnitzel I've ever had, and hand made klass (cheese with onions, vinegar, and paprika), which I didn't have a taste for. Cannot give enough praise for the green sauce. Overall an average experience which could have been way better if not for feeling rushed. It took us an hour to get here and it was going to be the only meal we were having in Frankfurt, so wanted to love it. Also, I did have to find and fetch a high chair for my daughter myself, since the wait staff wasn't willing to do it. They just pointed me in the direction of the chair. read more

I found this tavern to be so satisfying both in food and the celebratory atmosphere. Yes, a tiny bit touristy but also plenty of Germans. The staff was friendly and accommodating, so that you truly feel welcome. While the wine hall aspect makes the experience unique and the apfelwein and a plate of traditional frankfurt meats makes it an experience that you won't soon forget. My only regret is that I was not there when the courtyard was open. read more

So I'm no authority on German schnitzel. All I can say is that I've tried some of the schnitzel we have in New York, and it's all right, but I told myself I don't really need to try it again. Then I ended up stuck in Frankfurt due to visa issues on a business trip. I booked an airbnb and the super friendly host Jerry told me I had to try some schnitzel while I'm here! I was like, okay, sure -- lets see what you've got. Hands down the BEST FREAKIN' SCHNITZEL I've ever had, and I will be searching for something equivalent in New York from now on. I don't know why, but the New York schnitzel just made me think bready and crusty and kinda dry. This was soft and juicy on the inside, and still a little crisp on the outside, and EVERYTHING was delicious! The potatoes have a nice garlic and herb mix, and were soft on the inside with a little caramelization on the outside. The cutlet with the mushrooms and gravy was heavenly. We had a giant jug of apfelvine cider that helped cut and balance the heavy meal too. Spot on. The flavors in the cutlet and the potatoes gave my stomach a warm and cozy craving for the sort of home food you imagine in European fairy tales. Heavy but soooo satisfying and portions were really solid (when compared to NY). Absolutely coming back if I'm ever stuck in Frankfurt again. Why four stars? Because I can't justify a five star rating if I haven't at least tried schnitzel at a few different places, but boy this is way beyond the schnitzel in New York! read more
