My first meal in Germany! After landing in Frankfurt, I was looking for a spot for lunch before checking into my hotel. I took a bus there so I can't comment on the parking situation in the area. Ambiance (4/5): From the outside, Atschel looks like a homey, traditional restaurant. Which is exactly what I was looking for when it cam to my first dining experience in Germany. There's a charming inside area with wooden walls as well as a patio area in the back. I sat inside. Drinks (4/5): Frankfurt is known for apelwein or apple wine. So when in Rome...I had the apelwein spritz which adds soda and Aperol. I will say that straight up apelwein is not my jam. It's nice to try while you're in Frankfurt, but it's too bitter and vinegar-ey for me. With that being said, when you mix it in with Aperol and soda, it's pretty solid. And if you're in a group, you can get the apelwein served in large stone mugs which is pretty cool. Outside of that, they have a lot of beer, as you would expect, and pretty much everything else. Service (4.5/5): I was pleasantly surprised with how friendly and attentive the service was (which is typically not the norm in Europe). Our waitress checked on me, thanked me and said goodbye as I was leaving, and overall, did a great job. Food (4/5): Since this is a traditional German restaurant, I had to go with another Frankfurt specialty: Viener schitznel with green sauce. Schnitzel just means a thin cutlet (often pork) that is breaded. The green sauce is made from seven herbs and while it's a tad bit herb-ey for my taste, it was still interesting to try. The dish is served with fried potatoes. Filling and hearty as you would expect from a German meal. For my first meal in Germany, it was a great start to my trip. read more

Ordered Apfelwein which was not very good - but to be fair I'm sure there's different versions like every other type of wine. Ordered the green sauce dish - a staple of cold green sauce, eggs, potatoes. It was tasty but the eggs were ever so slightly overcooked (the grayish on the outside of the yolk) but the sauce was pretty dang good! Never checked in on me once to see how it was or if I wanted anything else. Finally I just decided to leave and even asked her for the rechnung twice! A no frills establishment serving up some fine German cuisine! Inside is rustic and warm. The staff is standing behind the bar, waiting to greet you. And you're immediately sat at bench like accommodations.We had our dinner a bit early since we had just landed, but keep in mind during busier hours, you may have to share your table with another party. We ordered the spaetzle, the vegan schnitzel, a lemonade and an apple wine. It took a bit but everything (but the drinks) were delivered piping hot and generously portioned. The spaetzle itself was cheesy and tender,with a lovely pile of caramelized onions on top.The salad provided helped to cut through the richness. The apple wine was nice and tart. And for 3 euros they pour with a heavy hand! The vegan schitznel,could not tell it was vegan as all. Very similar to chicken, with a crisp outer shell. The herb sauce served on the side was a nice burst of freshness on an otherwise heavy dish. The staff was overall kind. Maybe a bit slow, but nothing to scoff at. We had a reservation but that did not help us get a decent table; thinking because we're not German. (Local). Service was adequate at best. Food was authentic but in my opinion not high quality. Make a reservation, make a reservation, make a reservation! I can't stress this enough because this place is tiny. They allow for walk-ins in their beer garden, which is also very small. We were asked to get up from our table that we had grabbed after walking in because a large group was coming in after us and wanted to sit together. We had no issue moving. They were very kind and we understood entirely. Food was outstanding, my husband had the Frankfurt schnitzel, which was massive. I don't think the photo properly shows how big the two pieces of schnitzel was, yes, there's two in that photo one on top of the other. I had the Wienerschnitzel in Calb aka veal. It was delicious, piping, hot, and very tender. Veal can be extremely tricky to cook, and it was definitely done properly here. All the sides and the salads were refreshing. Flavors and seasoning were perfect. This place has great food and fantastic service, its only downfall is how tight things are in the restaurant and Biergarten. They're using the space to the best of their ability, but just like to give review readers a heads up in advance. Again, I can't stress enough to make a reservation so you can eat inside, the beer garden is only outside and it can get a bit chilly since it is shaded after 4 PM. read more

Cute little restaurant tucked away where the locals go...luckily someone at Atomix recommended this place to my mom so coming from a Frankfurt local we had to give it a try! Called in advanced while walking to see if we needed reservations; they do but for 2 people around 5:00pm they were able to seat us! Known for the apple wine I had to give it a try, I ordered with still/natural and it was pretty good and smooth. I ordered the beef tenderloin with potatoes on the side thinking it was just going to be the beef, however, it appeared to look like a hamburger patty with capers, didn't really appeal to me but the sautéed onions and potatoes were delicious, my mother actually enjoyed my dish. She ordered the Schnitzel with the homemade 7 herb green sauce which tasted amazing I was dipping everything in it! My mother and I were actually 1 of the first people to be seated, however, once 5:30ish came around people coming in non stop and the atmosphere just light up with families/friends having a good time! Wonderful traditional Frankfurter backyard restaurant. Nothing beats sitting outside, sipping their own Apfelwein, served in a traditional bembl. The pork cheeks (Schweinebacken) were insane tender and tasty. The service lacked the traditional Frankfurter rudeness. A piece of nostalgia that I can skip. It is great to have a traditional restaurant survive, while almost everything around it turned into noisy shiki-miki with cocktails and beer. Apfelwein must rule Sachsenhausen. read more

Last night in Frankfurt and we wanted one last taste of Germany (after visiting the Porsche museum in Stuttgart!!!) before heading back to the Big Apple . "Atschel" was open late and we were able to get schweinshaxe, veal schnitzel, braised pork cheeks and gallons of beer on tap before wrapping up a great Automechanika Frankfurt 2024. We came here as a family with kids on May 29th 2025. We had a confirmed reservation. Despite that we waited over 20 minutes to get menus. The table was dirty and still had an ashtray with cigarette butts and ashes. We ordered drinks. Only half arrived and even those were wrong. We had to remind the staff twice just to get two juices for the kids. When the food came there were no forks napkins or condiments on the table. Everything had to be requested again. The pork knuckle was dry and flavorless. Sausages had no character. Schnitzel was fine but not enough to save the experience. Staff were distracted and unhelpful throughout. The final bill had mistakes too. We corrected it ourselves. This place felt like they were operating on autopilot. We originally posted this experience on Google Maps. Finally! I lived in Frankfurt 20 years ago, and am back for a visit. The food scene has changed! I was looking for a Jaegerschnitzel, and I finally found a great one. I really miss my traditonal German food at home, and was pretty disappointed with other places that used to be stellar. But most of all, the customer service was great. Staff here actually acted as if they were happy to see you and bring you food, which is not the norm here. I might be spoiled from the U.S., but we have encountered some of the rudest wait staff at other places. Beautiful outside seating, We arrived around 4pm, so it was still early. If you go later, I would suggest reserving. So, we ordered Jaegerschnitzel with Spaetzl, Sulze, and Bratworscht mit Kartoffelbrei, and all of it was fabulous! Warning, the portions are huge! No doggy bags here, so be hungry. Of course: Apfelwein. I am here during Corona, so a vacine pass, negative test, or recory statement is necessary to enter the restaurant. I felt awkward not speaking German and not having a reservation but the friendly folks at Atschel made room for us in the garden room, which was covered, warm, had plenty of sunlight and was absolutely perfect! We ordered two types of schnitzel and it was by far the best I've had in my life. Thin, hot, and tender meat with a delicious crunch to the coating. We also had some apfel wine, a dark beer, a blonde beer, and some shots with some sort of fruit in them. Everything was delicious, well priced, and we felt so well taken care of. The frankfurter schnitzel is out of this world. It is just simply the best. Thus, coming here is a Frankfurt experience that every self respecting yelper should have. Apfelwein is another speciality of this joint, so use that to chase down the schnitzel. That will lead to a rather pleasant evening that will be remembered. Another surprise of the meal was the frankfurter salad, which was phenomenal. Essentially tons of bologna with pickled vegetables. The understanding of a salad must be different in this part of the world and it was simply awesome. Just don't expect "healthy". Service is a bit cold, but is not uncommon for Germany. For Americans coming here, that's just a reality one has to accept. There is a very pleasant patio and beergarten, with communal tables, so be prepared to get close with the neighbors. The patio cover was covered with mold, so that was a bit unpleasant to look at, but hopefully you are already here for the food, not the design or aesthetics. The impression I left with was extremely positive and the taste of the food and the memories still linger. Would strongly recommend the establishment. Ps. They do not take credit cards! When we arrived it was almost empty but they told us we needed to be done by 8pm which was about 2.5hrs so we figured no problem at all. Well it very quickly got extremely busy and there was only one server but she was amazing. She held down the fort! Pretty intimidating women but man did she know how to run a restaurant. We ended up being there until almost 8 when we really thought we would be gone way before then. We waited a while for food and in between courses but the patio and company was so good the time flew by. Try the apple wine of course but also suggest getting a dessert. The tables are community style so get ready to meet new people. reservation are really highly suggested. You'll make the restaurant happy which will keep you happier. "Hessian" food and I ended up sticking with the schnitzel which was excellent. I had a mostly comfy stool at the bar and the service there was excellent. Cold beer followed by a very tart cider. The schnitzel was perfect. Two large pieces (the "men's portion") with potatoes and this time, I got the special "green sauce" that is a Frankfurt specialty. No idea what's in this specific one, but the recipe calls for sour cream and herbs including cress and parsley and chives. It was awesome. This was cash only when I was here. On a rainy Saturday, it was not surprising that the crowded place didn't have a table for a solo customer like me visiting Frankfurt for two days. I found a place for myself at the bar. I ordered Schaufelchen. Pork shoulder with fried potatoes and salad. The meat was a bit dry but delicious and apple wine was a necessary company for that. My Stephen and I spent our Valentine's Day dinner at this busy restaurant and totally loved it! It was just down the street from our hotel and when we walked inside the place was warm from all the people, and loud from all the friends talking. We had to wait a little bit for a table, and while waiting we ordered the apple wine, which seems to be the drink for most people. Stephen ordered the schnitzel with green sauce, a local food item, and I got the schnitzel with mushroom cream sauce. The platters are BIG portions, and we left very satisfied. Atschel is a very busy restaurant, it has a reputation for some of the best Bavarian food and the crowds prove it. We didn't have a reservation on a busy Saturday night and was told it would be a two hour wait. We just walked out when a table of 4 got up to leave. We asked if the table was available and a server said yes, take it and enjoy. Not sure if we were lucky or cheated our way to a table but we would up with a table. Advice for next time.... get a reservation! Menu is broad with lots of "German Specialties". We started with a Caprese Salad and a bowl of onion soup. Both were tasty and large portions. Large portions is a recurring theme here :). For entrees we had Pork Cheeks in a red wine sauce that came with mixed vegetables and homemade spaetzle. Another entree was Pork Medallions with sliced apples and Calvados cream, fried potatoes and a small salad. Both the Pork Cheek and Pork Medallion entrees were delicious, large hearty portions that were easily shared. The other two people ordered the Schnitzel with creamed mushrooms, homemade spaetzel and a small salad. Like the other entrees the Schnitzel was tasty and huge. You don't leave here hungry. Even though we were very full, could not resist ordering a slice of Apple Strudel that came with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Great way to finish a feast. Service was good even with the place being super busy. Atschel is a good choice for hearty German food in Frankfurt. read more

Oh man, you know it's a local's favorite here when they don't speak much English and when it's crowded. We arrived here fresh from Amsterdam yesterday at 8 PM and boy was it crowded. Seating is based on a first come, first serve basis. Don't be surprised if other people share a table with you as it is a German tradition(think of it as a great way to get to know new people). Luckily, we didn't have to wait too long to get a table. While we were waiting for a table, we ordered some Krüg Brau beers at the bar. Pretty cheap for a half liter of beer at €3.70. For dinner, we ordered two Frankfurt schnitzels with grünsoß and it was delicious. The pork was juicy and not salty and the sauce was phenomenally good with the potatoes. Also, we tried the two frankfurters with sauerkraut that was also good. No doubt about it here that the food is indeed authentic German cuisine. From the schnitzel to the sauerkraut, whatever you had in the US isn't as good/authentic as this. Definitely a must try for those just getting into Deutschland! Sehr gut! read more

Apparently it's suggested to have them because it fills up fast. They have an outdoor beer garden in the summer. A wonderful local Apple wine and food place in Sachsenhausen. Friends who live in the area invited me to dinner here and I loved it. One of the other such places I have been to is literally next door to this one. Both great places to check out. Small interior with a handful of tables and an outdoor back terrace with a bunch of tables, it's an ideal way to spend an evening drinking apple wine and having a meal. The menu is full of classic Hessen food and, they have a small daily specials board. We ordered a bamble of apple wine and some mineral water to mix it with. I had the schäufelchen- marinated and roasted pork shoulder and, it was simply amazing. With a side of grünsoße it was just perfect and, I could not finish it all. Portions are big so careful you don't over order. You need to reserve here if you want to sit outside, as it was packed the whole evening. Great mix of people young and old sharing tables and enjoying the warm evening. Prices are reasonable and service is friendly albeit slow. I would be back here in a heartbeat :-) Abelwoi is an acquired taste and many people don't like. Wow. Atschel was the (food) highlight of our trip to Frankfurt. I would HIGHLY recommend making a reservation. We popped in on a Saturday evening (~6:00 pm) and there were no tables available, but we were lucky enough to snag the last two stools at the bar. It was obvious this is a local hotspot - almost everyone who entered recieved a handshake or a hug from the bartender, some special guests were even offered a homemade cookie. English was definitely not the primary language of many other diners, but the staff were accommodating. We promptly ordered the local specialties of an Apfelwein each, the Haxe (a grilled pork knuckle with saurkraut and bread) for my husband and Schnitzel Frankfurt style (with the local Green Sauce). The Haxe was AMAZING. The pork was tender, juicy and paired so well with the warm pickling liquids of the sauerkraut. Equally as delicious was the schnitzel with Frankfurt's Green Sauce. We'd had a number of schnitzels that were nothing to write home about, but this one...just wow. The breading wasn't soggy and held up well to the frying process, and continued to under the Green Sauce. If you haven't heard about the Green Sauce, you really haven't been to Frankfurt. The bartender kept the Apfelwein filled, the kitchen kept our bellies full and we were sent on our way with Mispelchen (a brandy apertif with an apricot? - super good). read more

This dinner wound up being a wonderfully warm welcome to this lovely country. We we're looking for the real Frankfurt experience and this place certainly offers it, its its traditional as traditional gets. When you walk in the decor really hits you like a ton of bricks, you feel like Hansel and Gretel are going to leap in front of you at any moment. Goethe supposedly lathered heaps of the famous Grüne Sobe ("Frankfurt Green Sauce") on most everything he ate. An emulsification of herbs, eggs and dairy It tastes/feels like a somewhat more fluffy and effervescent version of green goddess dressing. While I was glad to have tried it, I'm not sure I necessarily ever have to have it again. The wonderful Frankfurter schnitzel it was served alongside, the first of many schnitzels I was to inhale on this trip, however I would happily eat anytime along with he perfectly crisp fried potato chunks. The same can surely NOT be said of the traditional Frankfurt apple brandy schnapps that was forced upon us by our lovely and welcoming native Frankfurter co-patrons seated beside us in tandem with our equally if not exceedingly lovely server, which can most appropriately be described as super sweet-window cleaner.
