Enrolling my daughter into the TK program is probably one of the best educational decisions we made for our daughter. We watched her blossom in every aspect shortly after she joined. Mrs. Krofts is so amazing. Our daughter is more confident and excited to learn than ever. The Principal stands at the entrance to greet the students in the mornings, my daughter always runs up to him to give him a hug. We've had a great experience so far. I 100% recommend the TK program if you have a kid of age. They also have a good 'Home room' program that stays open till 6pm, it's convenient and relatively cheap. Most other schools in the area offer programs that close at 5pm which is not as convenient for working parents. read more

We have had our son here since he was in TK and have had an overall very positive experience the whole time! He's currently in third, and while there have been hiccups (my child has ADHD, so learning is always an adventure), we've felt very nurtured in this family-like environment. The communication is clear and we never feel like we're bothering anyone if we check in. Additionally, the principal has a wild ability to know everyone by name. I've lived in San Jose since I was born, and I've been to 5 schools and this certainly was my least favourite. I went here from 2016-2021 and they were probably the worst 5 years of my schooling career. The curriculum is very good and it's taught me things like parts of sentences, cursive, and even advanced maths (which put me ahead of other kids when i left), but the rest of the school has some things it could work on. School events were also rather nice, including harvest festivals, the car-racing event, teacher vs. student badminton, etc. For one you'd expect a school that's tuition is over 10K+ to not have to make the kids play in an empty parking lot with a few balls, bats, frisbees, etc. Growing up here you weren't even allowed to sit down at recess or you were in trouble. Two, the teachers were like a 50/50 dice roll. Half of them are very kind (notably Ms. Krofts, Ms. Heckman, Mr. Brandon Stubalt) but a lot of the teachers were not as kind. I've spent a school year with a few rough teachers, and it really makes you realise how important the person is teaching the lesson is to you. Three, there's roughly 150 people attending this school from K-8. There's maybe 20 people in each grade, meaning you will know these people for a long time. Some people were socially stunted leaving the school. Not to mention, some of the students were really rude for being a "Christian", I've gotten death and sexual assault wishes and threats multiple times from a student who attended this school. The school didn't have much diversity when I attended, either. Four, this may be a personal reason, but I don't think religious schools should even exist in the first place. The school was okay with how they used religion in schools EXCEPT for memory work. Memory work was probably the worst part of the curriculum. I'm sure half of the memory work I did was just random passages taken out from the Bible. Students had to memorise the disciples names in a specific order, the books of the bible, and hymns for a grade. Five, this school was a tad bit extra with it's homework. In 6th grade, you had 21 classes. Most all periods were 40 minutes, except for lunch and recess which they split into 20 minute periods. There was homework for all students mostly everyday, and one thing I hated about our 6th grade was our teacher made us listen to him read a story whether we liked it or not. 30 minutes every day reading a story from like 60 years ago every day before school ended. You weren't allowed to do anything else, no schoolwork, no nothing. I think this school could also look into its safety. During the 2020 school year, we were permitted to come to school. While the rest of the world was on lockdown, we had crazy and ridiculous measures taken just so we could show up. If you caught COVID, then you still had to show up to school on a google meet with just the teacher for two weeks. Overall, I think this school wasn't quite a good school at all, but it had some good things to its name. Though, if I was a parent, I would certainly not send my kids here. It would be better sending your child to a non-religious public school to learn social skills and normal curriculum and letting them choose their own religion. read more

Our son has been attending Apostles Lutheran School from TK through 8th grade, and we couldn't be more grateful for the experience he's had here. He has received an amazing Christian education, and we truly thank all of the teachers and staff at Apostles for pouring into him academically, spiritually, and personally. The small class sizes have made a big difference, allowing the teachers to give each student more individual attention and support. We've also really come to love the close-knit community at Apostles. It's a place where you can build relationships not only with the teachers and staff, but also with other parents and students. My daughter has been going to this school for 3 years now and we love it. She had an unfortunate experience at our neighborhood school and the moment we started at Apostles, we noticed an immediate change in her. It is a wonderful, close-knit community, where the teachers know all of the students. We also appreciate the communication between all levels at the school. The school emphasizes strong values for all of the kids and they are set for life with a strong foundation in faith. My daughter (2nd grader) transferred to this school about a month ago and we absolutely love it!! She comes home with fun facts about science, stories about God, new Spanish vocabulary, and so much more! She's singing Christian songs in the car everyday. She's more aware of what it means to live a Godly life and be a good person. There's also ZERO conflicts with others at school! It's amazing! Everything I said about curriculum and social life was the complete opposite at her crowded (albeit well-rated, 7/10) public school where she was bored/disengaged everyday, learning by the computer, hungry, and having a hard time navigating conflicts. I'm relieved that we found a good fit at Apostles. The staff here genuinely care about the students and their overall well being, not just their academics. Went there as a student, and now both my children go there. When my wife got the opportunity to become a teacher there it was her dream come true. The staff care deeply for the students. There are sports, plays, choirs, and after school clubs depending on time of year. I'm impressed, I have a great experience here. There website shows it's accredited and it is. Then I heard through word of mouth it's an incredible school so I enrolled my child. It's got a packed acedemic schedule filled with music through out the day for kindergarten. The playground and classroom area is gated for safety. I'm enjoying the binder filled with what he's learning everyday. Theres a little home work reading paper about Bible mixed with daily life applications like not waiting food or God praise prayers. The other hw as well is reading log book of your choice. Students, parents and staff are warm and friendly. They truely walk the Christian walk here at Apostle's Lutheran School and worth the peace of mind sending him here. read more

We moved to Apostles at the beginning of the school year for my second grader. I have to say the school and staff have surpassed all expectations. My child is thriving and happier than ever. The class sizes are small but also large enough to foster friendships. I was worried how my child would adapt since many of the children were together for the last couple years. What I found was that the children all play together and it is incredibly inclusive. I have seen huge leaps in my child academically, socially and spiritually. There are many words to describe this great school, but, because of the limitation of the writing space here, I must be concise. This sentence alone should tell you how I feel about this school. My son is currently in Kindergarten and has been going since TK. I knew I picked the right school for my son since the TK year because he's been getting up on time in the morning just to go to class. I see the positivity in him every day as he is thriving to learn academically, socially, and most importantly, Christian morals. He comes home reciting songs and telling me the bible stories that he's learned in school and interesting school experiments, such as The Elephant Toothpaste Experiment. The staff is wonderful as they all greet him and say his name when passing by. The school principal must have a photographic memory because he knows each one of the children's names while greeting them in the mornings. One of the other benefits is the small classroom size so that the teacher can emphasis the fun in learning and has the time to spend with a student who would need additional help. Another benefit is that the school cares about its community as evidence by the school and public events they host throughout the year. Because of the reasons above, I will enroll my son to 1st grade and continue to do so each year. read more

An amazing Christian school. My child has attended since kindergarten. The teachers are kind, educated and called to the teaching ministry. This is more than a job for them it is a calling. They are exceptionally well trained with a genuine interest in teaching and helping each child reach their potential. The administration and parents work hard to make this a wonderful school to attend. I have watched the children grow up together here and thrive. They are a great group of kids. There are diverse activities too from sports to drama and music and even activities like chess club and girls on the run. My husband attended this school as a child, as did my nephews. Good teachers but poor administration business strategy/structure... My children have attended for several years and overall the teacher experience has been very good with only a few disappointing teachers. The bible teachings are well ingrained into the learning curriculum as well. However, the school has gone through 3 principals in 5 years and has some very outdated and quirky practices. First, all teaching staff and administrators are hired from a trained pool of candidates from and in Wisconsin at Apostles Lutheran Headquarters "WELS". Local qualified teachers and administrators in California with extensive experience and Christian beliefs aren't even considered unless they have trained and certified as church members from the Wisconsin AL program. The local school board of directors in CA for ALS issues a blind request for new personnel to the parent organization in Wisconsin. The parent organization establishes what they deem as a suitable 4 person pool of candidates from an internal church list. The CA board then receives the 4 person list and has to decide on a candidate "sight unseen" for a phone interview. Once the phone interview concludes if the CA board wants to hire, it is now up to the candidate to decide if they want to come out and consider/take the job. If they come out to California and look like a poor candidate, too bad its up to the candidate to take or not take the job. They describe this process as "spirit led" hiring. But in reality it appears to be a very legalistic control model from a "mother ship" in Wisconsin to only place church members that they like and know. Gives one almost a cult-like feeling out of the 60's. Second, the school doesn't operate on any real progress plan and or strategy. It has been operating for nearly 40 years. However 2012 marks the "first" Parent Teacher group in the history of the school! Why? All clubs, groups, capitol projects, have to receive approval from the mother-ship Wisconsin which takes years to happen. In 2010 over neighborhood safety and security concerns the board in CA decided to install security cameras and update its burglar alarm. However since Wisconsin hasn't approved it yet, in 2013 nothing has been done. Lastly the school operates on a tiny footprint where the only school parking lot is also the black-top playground for the kids. it really isn't set up for anything past elementary school. For the discerning Christian parent looking for a structured evangelical Christian school for their children there are many other safer and more modern alternatives in the South San Jose region. read more

However, let me address Mr. Ken B's review. Unfortunately there are some rather erroneous claims made, bordering on slander. Our Divine Call process is taken very seriously as well as our children's safety. The call list itself comes from the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod's (WELS) database of teachers on file. When a congregation across the US has a specific need they will put in a request to the district president. From there the calling body receives a list of five candidates. The congregation then votes on whom they would choose based on the criteria listed. The candidate may choose to accept or decline after a prayerful period of consideration. There is no favoritism. It is like any resume: who is most qualified? We strive for excellence in everything we do while prayerfully considering the proper and most beneficial course of action to take. We provide a well balanced Christian education, not a cult-like classroom. We are Accredited and follow Common Core and CA State Standards. Our students take the same standardized tests that the public school children do, and they excell. I invite anyone to come on our campus and observe any classroom and our excellent teaching staff. So before false accusations and borderline slandering statements are made and believed; I would ask that if you're looking for a great school that you give us a chance! We love our kids. We moved our children to ALS during the pandemic, they were in person and they had all the precautions and safety procedures to provide an amazing learning environment for the children. My kids are very happy, I can see they are learning and developing new abilities. The school is always clean and very organized. I feel their curriculum has a good balance to challenge the kids in many areas, homework is not crazy and it supports what they are learning in the classroom. We've had great teachers: Mrs. Bitcon, Mrs. Graumann, Mrs. Stubalt, Mr. Tomlin, very kind, educated, and great teachers. Mr. Koeppel, the principal, is another great person, he knows every student's name and is always there to support the needs of students and parents, he is very involved in every activity the school has. So far, SO GOOD! If I have a suggestion or any concern, they are always open to listening and helping to solve the situation. read more

An amazing school is all I have to say. Student to teacher ratio is where it needs to be so that the kids get proper attention. The principal, teachers, and pastors are all wondrful. My son has blossomed over the past year thanks in part to Apostles. I can never imagine sending my son to a public school after witnessing how smoothly things go here. Mrs Crofts is in charge of the Pre-k (K-1) class and it's a joy to watch how well she cares for each of her kids and is the sweetest person you will meet! They have an after school care program for parents who work, I think only $4.25 per hour.I highly reccommend this private church-based school to anyone looking to set their child on the right path to success. read more

Why I LOVE Apostles Lutheran School... Because Apostles actually CARES about your kids. The teachers LOVE what they do, and are passionate about teaching. Every teacher gives 100% of their individual time, their day, and their life to the kids. Apostles teachers don't just show up in the morning and leave in the afternoon, they participate in school activities after school, and on the weekends. They make themselves highly available to parents and encourage communication with them. The Apostles faculty includes well seasoned teachers with 30 years of experience as well as young teachers with new ideas. My kids come home excited about stuff, and trying new things with music or telling stories about entertaining teachers. Apostles teachers are in control of their classrooms, and they run like clockwork. Kids thrive on this structure and routine. Discipine is handled in a firm and logical manner, and kids respond. No rumors of fights on the playground or any 'he said she said'. It all gets nipped in the bud from the start, and that takes care and attention. No other faculty in the bay area can compare to the dedicated teachers of Apostles Lutheran. Apostles has an abundance of extracurricular activities for students, so many in fact it is impossible to participate in them all; from sports like basketball, flag football, intramurals, track and field, to instrumental music lessons, chess club, and fall or spring musical productions. Kids get to go on several fun field trips per year. Education here is well rounded. Children are evaluated in math and reading and placed in classes that challenge them. Class sizes are small averaging 15-20 per class and many upper grade classes have been together since kindergarten. My kids have great friends and are proud to be Eagles (the school mascot). Some might shy away from choosing Apostle's Lutheran School because of their Bible based foundation. I on the other hand chose it for that very reason. I want my children to learn how to make good moral decisions for themselves and their own families in the future and the best way to do that is to " Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Apostles Lutheran is just a top notch school. Fantastic teachers in every room providing a well rounded education and more importantly, in a Christian setting. It is a blessing knowing that all of our teachers and administrators come from the same college so I know my two little boys are hearing God's Word on a daily basis and that they are being taught as the Bible teaches. Since all the faculty come from the same college it also creates an extremely tight knit group of educators working together for the same common goals.
