The property is run down and filthy. The parking lot is filled with trash and abandoned vehicles. This property blights the neighborhood.

Wow, you can review church? The idea is either sacrilege or divinely inspired, I guess, depending…read moreon your point of view. I'm okay with either. (Background moment: I grew up Lutheran -- and I can never really get away from it. No matter how hard I try, the liturgy and the fellowship and the really bad coffee keep calling me back.) So last December, I got nostalgic for the beautiful Advent services I attended as a kid. I Googled Lutheran churches in the area that offer them. It turns out that the conservative Missouri Synod is the only branch of local Lutherans that still do these, so I found myself at Living Savior on a Wednesday evening. Now, I am not anything that might be called conservative in a political or religious sense, so I thought it might be a little odd attending at a place where the belief structure is likely to be the polar opposite of my own. Nope. I was greeted sincerely by literally every person I encountered. Nobody was pushy, but everyone invited me to ask questions, attend on Sundays, check out the choir, etc. The pastor, a calm, confident sort of person who made me feel quite at home, made a point of talking with me after service. The service itself was Holden Evening Prayer, a modern sung liturgy that I've loved since I first encountered it years ago. If you have ever sung H.E.P, this will be a major plus point in your book. I enjoyed my experience, and I went back twice. (Then I ran out of Advent.) I still get the newsletter, and I'm not opposed to going back sometime. I'd definitely recommend Living Savior to anyone looking to attend service as a visitor or as a potential member.

This is a VERY friendly and caring church! What's more, they have excellent musicians in their…read moremembership, and often call on them to lead in worship. The pastor is energetic, engaged, transparent, and not afraid to speak Truth. A most accessible church, both emotionally and physically, I recommend it to anyone looking for a fresh take on Scripture, and some Words for today's issues. Bring your singing voice too, because this congregation needs no organ to fill out its voice, but it's led by a top-notch, professional pianist, and professionally trained volunteers, toggling or intersecting at time with guitar, banjo, trumpet, flute, drums, violins, accordions, and other instruments. You'll sing both traditional and contemporary hymns and responses. There is nothing "holier-than-thou" about this place. The grounds are also lovely, and lovingly cared for, by devoted church members. Right next door to Little Woodrose Park in Tualatin, Tualatin Pres offers a treed view from the large, clear glass windows its sanctuary, there is a memorial garden outside, the place is serene and cheerful, and groups love to meet there. From opera singers to quilters to gardeners to knitters to Scouts - many community groups make Tualatin Pres their home. There is also a preschool that runs daytimes downstairs. The worship space was originally an octagon, but was redesigned for more worship space some years ago and is now a square. But the acoustics could not be more favorable for singing! It is a favored space for local concerts as well. In the worship services you'll find reverence, humility, jollity, excellence, casualness, family oriented atmosphere, traditions, openness, and acceptance. It's a place to get centered quietly and also to connect with brothers and sisters in the faith. It's a place to take out old practices and beliefs and examine them, re-evaluate their purpose, and perhaps re-invent them, or honor them anew just as they are. And it's a place to bring the depths of your heart to the Mercy Seat at times. It's a congregation who will help launch you on whatever adventure life calls you to, and help you settle in a stable place if that's what you're seeking. It's a place for meeting with friends and for meeting new friends. It's a place where all are welcome, and they really want to hear your "Joys and Concerns." What more can you ask from a family? Perhaps I'll see you there! Gratefully submitted by Patty Farrell July 2018 P.S. I only put 4 stars because I've been in churches all my life, and love everything. No church has everything, and neither does this one, but I can dream, can't I? Heaven will! P.S. To paraphrase from a very favorite musical, I don't think any congregation has ever been the best it can be, but this one tries.
