A view of the Matterhorn from our room seemed like an empty promise, given that we were visiting in November and the weather in the weeks leading up to our Zermatt trip was terrible, but the Focus delivered! Sunny, Matterhorn views from our bed and patio every day! I could go on about all the additional touches that made our trip so special, from the convenience of the in-hotel massages, included spa privileges, location a few steps from the ski lift and ski rental shop, excellent bar and service, but for now I'll suffice it to say you won't find better. 5 stars!!!

It's unfortunate that yelp! reviews for hotels outside of the U.S. are scarce, which makes it so much harder avoid mistakes. This is particularly true when you are making a special vacation to Switzerland. On such a special trip you deserve and expect that distinctive atmosphere, service, decor, and hospitality that are unique to Swiss culture. In my experience, this place truly lacks such attributes or qualities. In terms of facilities, the room had a fly though it was the middle of winter. In my particular room, spotlights in the parking lot shone directly at my window and hit my eyes while I was trying to fall sleep. Also, the bathtub was dangerously high, hard to climb into, and easy to fall out off. The place gave me a general grossed-out feeling. Even more disturbing was their deceptive description on booking.com stating "The Alpenhotel features a restaurant serving Swiss and Italian specialities and every day you can start with the complimentary buffet breakfast." However, after you make your reservation, the booking.com website prompts you to respond whether you are interested in breakfast at CHF10 per person. I immediately called booking.com (call cost me nearly $9) and was promised they'd resolve this with the hotel owners and call me back. To date, they have not called back. At that point it was not possible to cancel my reservation without incurring a penalty of CHF 120 (over $133). Upon arriving to the hotel, the clerk asked me how many breakfasts I would like to purchase. I explained her the ad of complimentary breakfast and she said that under no circumstances would she honor that ad. She again inappropriately demanded 20 Francs from me. I declined breakfast, since at that point why would I want to eat with these folks? Almost week later, the false advertising still on ad hasn't been taken down from booking.com on the Internet.... Hello? Unlike other hotels in Switzerland where the staff has an excellent command of English (the language of travelers) and German (the official local language), the desk person at Alpenhotel exhibited proficiency in neither, which made it impossible for them to understand my complaints and me explaining the unfairness of their advertising. There is nothing Authentic or Authentically Swiss about this hotel, thus even the name "Alpenhotel" is deceiving and misleading. If you're on a budget, you're better off going to a "Jugendherberge" where you pay less for better facilities and enjoy an Authentic Swiss experience. Again, their facilities get two stars. It would take fewer stars to rating my experience with their misleading advertising and lack of integrity in their customer service.

The hotel has nice finishes, kind of modern mountain style, and our room was on the top floor with wood beam paneled vaulted ceilings. The bath tub was big enough for both of us, and the spa amenities were great. There is a humid sauna, dry sauna, upstairs sauna and outdoor hot tub, and a massage treatment room. The bartender gave us a Welcome drink (you can choose from prosecco, beer, or wine), and we got a cocktail afterwards as well. Mine was the 22 Summit cocktail which was a cucumber refresher and it was one of the best cocktails that I had the entire time I was in Zermatt. Staying here made us not want to leave, and I wish we had stayed here another night before our trip ended! Great hotel.

Checking in was super easy. The front staff is super sweet and walked us to the room, helping us with our luggage. A warm welcome after walking outside in the cold. The room itself is awesome. It's a bit bigger than I thought it would be, which is a total plus! My only complaint is that there isn't too much room for large suitcases. Other than that, I love it. Bed firmness is perfect. Similar to my bed at home. Soft top layer but firm base mattress. Not too firm, just right! The spa is small but very clean and relaxing. The jacuzzi is a nice size and has a beautiful view is the snow covered rooftops. Breathtaking! The location to me is ideal! It's about a 15 minute walk from the city center, but the streets are quiet and peaceful. Which is what I wanted! Overall, this place has been amazing so far! The breakfast selection, restaurant cleanliness, and quality of food were above average. The single occupancy room was cozy and adequate. It had all the necessities. But the bed and the mattress made annoying squeaky noise as you rolled around naturally. Probably a little to thin for a full size adult. This would be main constructive feedback. The location is of course beautiful but you do need to plan and be comfortable for a 10-15 walk to the main parts of the village, unless you call a taxi. I'd recommend the place and have no problem going back, but would try a room with higher quality bedding.

We stayed in mid-August and had a room with a balcony facing the main drag. This means a Matterhorn view when weather permits. We were fortunate to have good weather. Since there's no air conditioning at the hotel, having a window open is necessary on hot summer evenings. Unfortunately, there's always lots of activity on the main street so the noise level may bother some people if a window and/or balcony door are left open for ventilation. The hotel is luxurious but some areas have eclectic decor. We enjoyed the comfortable king bed, the ice cold tap water, and the quick hot water. The bathroom had niceties like a heated floor and heated towel rack, but the toiletries were inferior. We missed having an in-room safe. Our room and en suite bathroom were spacious by most European standards. Hanging and drawer space were adequate, and there were USB ports for charging electronics. Breakfast was included with our accommodations and was a buffet (actually 2 buffet set-ups, with one having gluten free selections) plus a choice of individually prepared eggs. While the selection of hot and cold foods was good, the food in the buffet chafing dishes was far from hot during our visit. There are 2 elevators serving the 4 guest floors in the hotel, so there can be backups during group check-ins and checkouts. This happened for our group and for at least one other we saw. The stairs are adjacent to the elevator, but the poor lighting in the stairwell made for an uncomfortable experience. We didn't use any of the spa facilities. While we enjoyed our stay, I might consider a different hotel if I return to Zermatt.
