Amazing opportunity and efforts from local high school…read more ICYMI, Cabrillo High maintains a small aquarium as a mechanism for their student population to learn marine science, management, and all sorts of responsibilities that you would want your graduating high schoolers to have under their tool belts. This is a facility that most Midwesterners or folks like me in the desert have the opportunity for. The aquarium is run by students (overseen by faculty). My niece invited her out of town family to visit one of her activities that gives her a lot of pride, and rightly so. There are tidal fish, sea stars, anemone, jellyfish, and a small shark hatchery that are managed. We were able to go during the feeding period to feed the aquatic attractions. The kids were able to use the touch tanks for a more tactile experience. I am quite impressed with the efforts, because maintain salt aquariums like this take a lot of work for bigger for profit aquariums, but the Cabrillo Conquerors are learning what it takes to do that. They are providing their school and a community a service, individual customer service, just some life skills that we don't always see in extra curricular activities. It's not huge, but it is a very interesting facility that Cabrillo High and Lompoc have giving limited access to the community. Small but mighty, and just a surprising little aquarium.

I don't think I've ever heard of another high school having such a big, expensive aquarium like this one. The students were running the show, and they were extremely knowledgeable about all of the creatures that they had on display. They even had a touch tank filled with starfish, sea urchins and more! The jellyfish were my favorite sea creatures to observe. Did you know they eat little shrimp? I didn't until last night! It was super fun and you should check this little place out!

They didn't have it in stock and asked me to leave the pump with them so they could figure out how to re-order one. In less than an hour, they called me back and told me they fixed my pump. When I went to pick it up, they showed me how I could fix it. And they didn't charge me anything! They take pride in the service they offer as a small business.

After the event, I wanted to offer my patronage and support them on their wonderful cause. I found their standalone gift shop that happens to be near the centralized restroom area. I saw a shirt that I liked, but the lady behind the counter suggested I check out their gift shop located inside their Heal the Bay Aquarium as they have other shirt selections. I took the lady's recommendation. Upon arrival at their main gift shop, they did not carry the shirt I wanted. Btw, it's a very small aquarium and gift shop. We headed back to the standalone gift shop location and they were closed. OMG... I was so bummed! I guess both gift shops have different operating hours. I didn't get my shirt and I don't know when I'll return to Santa Monica Pier. I guess I was not meant to buy that shirt at that time. Until we meet again, be good my shirt!

I have never been in a fish store before that had every single tank kept with substrate and plants (freshwater) as you would keep them at home. Every tank looked wonderful. We don't have saltwater, only fresh- but their salt water tanks were wonderful, too. Dylan was really helpful. We had stopped by driving back from Cambria to LA and picked up two female electric blue rams. They had been quarantined in the shop already for 3 weeks and looked great. We got those, some Java moss, some feeder snails for our Congo puffer and some frozen bloodworms. A really great store- probably the best one we've been to outside of LA, and ranking at the top of any we've visited in SoCal.

His passion for the hobby and willingness to share his expertise made the entire experience enjoyable and gave us the confidence to get started the right way. If you're new to saltwater aquariums or even an experienced reefer, we highly recommend asking for Dylan. We'll definitely be back for future additions to our reef tank. It's not a big place, but they've got plenty to see in the small little two-floor building they have overlooking the beach at the end of the pier. We saw sharks, different types of fish, many starfish, and jellyfish. They also have a pretty decent-sized touch tank. We easily spent a good 45 minutes just looking at all sea life and learning about the sea creatures that roam the beach. Kids loved every minute of it, and I had a blast watching them enjoy themselves. It's not the Long Beach Aquarium by any means but is amazing for what it is and the small size that it is. Worth checking out anytime you're here visiting the beach.

Just be cautious if you're wearing any sunscreen. I'm not sure if it does any harm but I erred on the side of caution. They have an upstairs but can get tight with not a lot of room if many come at a time. They do have a way to bring up wheelchairs and strollers but you will need the assistance of staff. My favorite tank was the one with the eels in it. I can't remember the fish names but there's a big funky-looking fish in it. I think it was a parrotfish.
