The staff on the phone were very kind, professional, and helpful, and were able to get me a grooming appointment for my conure quickly. Dr. Kelsey Grunewald and her assistant were able to efficiently and calmly handle my untamed, fearful, and flighted conure for a nail and beak trim. The appointment went smoothly and quickly, my parrot is now much more comfortable with his nails and beak being at an appropriate length, and it was not even close to being as traumatizing of an appointment as I'd imagined it would be considering this was my conure's first vet experience! She let him fly around the room on his own without grabbing him straight from his carrier until he calmed down a bit, which I really appreciated. The staff is professional, and the clinic is clean. I will definitely be coming back for vet and grooming appointments for my parrots and chickens. We just recently switched over from another local vet to Cat & Bird and it has been such a wonderful upgrade. We love Dr. Sellers and were instantly put at ease with her and we could tell our kitties were in absolutely capable and caring hands. She was able to figure out what was wrong with our cat quickly and we were able to correct course from what previous vet had recommended. Lots of car action on their intersection but they have a nice big quiet parking lot in the back which helps a ton when having to unload pet carriers. The staff are friendly and helpful and it's been great being able to just text them with questions and to schedule appointments. Wouldn't recommend this vet for your cats. I've been deeply disappointed with the care offered by this clinic on more than one occasion. Dramatically overpriced fees and for some reason only open until 3pm? Unless you're in the room with the vet for an appointment it's impossible to actually speak with them. If you call or text a question it is the front desk staff that replies- sometimes you can tell there has been a loose game of telephone with a vet. It really feels like the person in charge is just in it for the money, doing what she'd like at her convenience and for the highest price she can get away with. MY FAVORITE VET EVER! And I've been to a ton.... Taco had PTSD from his vile first mother in Tribeca and peed outside the box. It was wholly mental, though I do think putting him on Urinary SO (Royal Canin $$$ Rx food) two years helped curb the problem. Urination outside the box is a complex and difficult thing to fix. Most vets told me he would always do it to some extent, though perhaps less. They were wrong. PTSD is real---in humans and pets. That woman was a truly bad human and it took years of love and safety for Taco to pee 100% in the box. In a year, he's only sprayed once (and only because I had a visitor who accidentally poked him in the ear). And only on a bathmat. No biggie. I love my three Manhattan vets and my Pacific Palisades vet is great (but the staff totally incompetent). But Dr Grunewald is an angel. I dropped Taco off for a wellness check and also second opinion re teeth. Cleaning cat teeth is a big production requiring anesthesia and my Palisades vet said it would take all day. At the Cat and Bird Clinic (which has an aquarium!), it's three hours tops. Range: $200-500 which is way under what my friends in NYC and LA reported as the going rate. Office visits are only $68 and there's no waiting. I dropped Taco at 8:30. Went outside to take a few phone calls and call old vet (again) to get recent bloodwork sent over, then had him home by a little after 9AM. I get annoyed with Santa Barbara's size, sleepiness, and provinciality, but when it comes to stuff like this, it's nice to live in a small-town. This vet is across the street from my chiropractor, Dr Neal Barry (Best of SB in Independent last year and always a finalist). Just a few minutes drive from San Roque/Samarkand. I'm so happy to have found a new vet for Taco, even if I'm moving in 6 or so months. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! NOTE: NEVER EVER GO TO ADOBE PET CLINIC by Kyoto. I won't rehash but trust me. They are very, very bad (the old senior vet, male, if he's still around). The younger woman is good with animals but has no power in the operation and if you want to know how your ex-cat died, you're SOL. Every day I drive by, I hope that clinic has become a Verizon store or La Salsa. Some things are forgivable. Their conduct--and specifically the diabolical senior male---is not. Great experience. My cats see Dr. Grunewald and she is a fantastic vet. All of the employees at the office are personable and helpful. My cats respond really well to the vet and vet techs. Even the way they hold the animals is skilled yet sweet. No vet has been able to keep my cat calm and still before during an exam. My cats have also gotten dentals here and it went smoothly. The prices are fair and the scheduling is great. I was concerned about my cats paw and they were able to them in same day. For regular appointments I have been able to get in same week or next week. I also love that she has her own chickens, and took care of my little girl like she was her own. I live far away, and Dr. Sellers is insanely busy, so I appreciate that I can usually drop my pet off in the early morning and pick it up at the end of the day. Usually if I have to come, it is for an unexpected emergency, and not something I can schedule an appointment for in advance. The only reason I don't come here very frequently anymore (and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) is I had too hard a time actually scheduling apointments with Dr. Sellers because she is too busy/popular. BEWARE! Do not take your bird here for wing clipping. I (and my cockatiel) had a horrific experience. I specifically said to three different employees I wanted a very, very mild clip, not extreme. The result was devastating. I've cried every day since my bird was mutilated by these hacks. My cockatiel drops like a rock, literally straight down so severely she bounces when hitting the ground. Not only was the clip extremely excessive but it left mutilated, ragged, jagged edges to the minimal feathers she has left. Looks like they were put in a grinder, seriously. Hatchet job just doesn't explain how damaged she is. The cherry on top of this nightmare is the quote I asked for when making the appointment on the phone was $20, but my bill was $27. Dr Christine Sellers is the best vet ever. The entire family thinks so ...and we have had a lot of pets & vets growing up and as adults. She understands the food diet impact on cats.. our cat was having problems with her food and weight. Problem solved thanks to Dr Sellers I learned many cats eventually build up intolerance or allergic reaction to meat products. Soy and Fish are not good for them typically. Fish by products can cause internal issues with (liver or gall bladder...i forgot..our cat had some inflammation here and we changed diet and it solved that!). Fish also not good as the fishing industry for cat and dog food is horrendous for the "captive" fishermen and the marine environment esp in SE Asia. (this is me not her). MY grain free pricy wet food (Back country rabbit - as thought so sustainable since rabbits have small footprint) actually has as 3rd or 4th ingredient of meat and meat liver. Cats don't eat cows. She was throwing it up. Now we have switched and much better. We also got a dry food (fowl with no soy, no meat, no fish) that has flax (great for hair ball issues). Thank you Dr Christine for getting us back on track. Our cat had been throwing up & losing weight - we thought due to eating fast but turns out was not able to process and digest the cat food (even our pricy what seemed so pure). Fun environment...birds and cats only... Dr Christine is knowledgeable and does not oversell you She explained why they do the 1 year not 3 yr rabies shot (some studies show the 3 yr is linked to tumors at site of injection). I only wish her front office knew this too as we had asked the same question to them when scheduling the annual vaccine. Dr Sellers also helped us with a fecal issue the year before thanks to an easier non refrigerator pill vs the fridge liquid type (also harder to administer). She gave us a longer dosage and it worked. Finally. The Montecito group we used to frequent was not consistent and even did a dental surgery on our cat. We switched as our cat was doing poorly post surgery & we had no luck with the issues (food throw up/hair ball diet add..and communication stuff). They do not have anyone watching over night. I visited him twice a day and every time he was SOAKED in urine. They said he was leaking urine but when we got him home he could pee just fine under his own control. They discharged him and said would contact with results of a urinary culture and never did or to check to see how he was. Too many options in town to take your animal to a place where they let them sit in their own piss for god knows how long. read more

I regularly brought in my cockatiel each month to see Dr. Sellers for almost a year. He had been originally prescribed antibiotics which seemed to have helped, but then steadily declined in health. Dr. Sellers was kind enough to order a culture without charging me. Through this, she discovered he was resistant to the antibiotics. Although he seemed to respond well to the new antibiotics, he was a very old bird (would have turned 20 this year!) and passed away at the end of last year. I do not blame Dr. Sellers, but I am overall happy at her attentiveness and genuine concern for the welfare of my bird. It is very rare to find such a knowledgeable avian vet that does not over charge. I will say that it is incredibly difficult to book an appointment with her, just due to her demand. I suggest booking early. Receptionists are always sweet and attentive. read more

My mom has an umbrella cockatoo and she layed her first clutch earlier this week. She seemed fine after the first egg, two days later she was not acting herself. Started calling around to see a vet, her in Lompoc the bird vet was not taking clients... so we were calling everywhere frantically trying to get her in, the bird clinic in Pismo told us it wasn't an emergency and didn't have an opening until the following week. Finally found this Cat and Bird clinic and we are so greatful we did! It was so late in the day by the time we got in touch with them they couldn't get us in that day, but we got an appointment for the following day. Five minutes after Coco was taken back the vet called us with a plan to get started with which included a calcium shot and doing xrays. She was not egg bound which was our first concern, but she was and still is calcium deficient... the vet also saw that her heart might have some problems and before she did a final diagnosis needed to see the final radiology report which would be available the following day. We decided it was best for Coco to stay the night at the clinic and not have to travel twice from lompoc to Santa Barbara if they needed to do an ultrasound after the radiology report. The whole staff was so patient, kind and understanding. These were professionals that had never seen us or our animal prior to this but cared for her like she was one of their own! We are so thankful we found the Cat and Bird Clinic here on Mission street. Coco has a long road to recovery but after only two days she is slowly acting more like her silly self again. I do not recommend this veterinary clinic. I had an extremely bad experience with this office last year when I decided to give them a try with my three-old-cat. My cat was essentially healthy when I brought her in for her first appointment, and I actually felt the doctor we saw had some new ideas for managing some behavioral issues she had, and I was pleased by that. Unfortunately, when I took her in for a follow-up appointment two weeks later, my cat became quite ill just minutes after the doctor performed a routine procedure on her. We were still in the office, and despite my cat's clear pain and my insistence that this was not normal for her, the doctor and the other staff just kept telling me that she was totally fine, that her reaction was not typical but still normal. Over the next several days, I could tell that my cat was not well, but every time I called and spoke the doctor about my concerns, she continued to tell me not to worry. Finally, over the weekend, I decided to ignore the apathetic assurances provided to me by the Cat & Bird Clinic, and I took my cat to an emergency vet. It turned out that my cat was extremely sick. She spent 5 nights at the pet hospital (costing me more than $5000), but just a week and half after my last appointment at the Cat & Bird Clinic, I had to have my three-year-old cat euthanized. After the euthanasia of my beloved cat, I wanted to talk to the doctor at the Cat & Bird Clinic to try to better understand how my cat's illness had been missed and if they had any idea what could have caused it. I just wanted more clarity about things. Like why every other veterinarian I've spoken to has told me that the reaction my cat had to the routine procedure sounded incredibly abnormal and concerning. But I have never been able to have a meaningful conversation about my cat with anyone at the Cat & Bird Clinic since her death, despite me making numerous calls and visits to the office in the weeks afterward. To be clear, I do not know that the doctor I saw at the Cat & Bird Clinic did anything medically incorrect, as the vets at the pet hospital could not ever figure out exactly what her underlying illness was. HOWEVER, the lack of concern shown about my cat both when she was clearly ill in their office and when I repeatedly called with my worrisome observations, seems pretty unacceptable to me. I don't know if she could have been saved if anything had been done differently, but I do think her last week or so could have looked very different than it did if the doctor at the Cat & Bird Clinic had taken the time to see that she was not well at all. Given that, I would not recommend this veterinary practice. I'm giving them two stars as an acknowledgment of the fact that they might provide decent medical care under certain circumstances, but the treatment my cat received was deserving of no more than 1 star for sure. read more

My neighborhood pet hospital lost my family's business when our dog died alone on an exam table while their staff were out to lunch. So in looking for a reputable vet for the family cat, a number of friends recommended the cat and bird clinic. Really, the vet's handling of our cat seemed miraculous, because the family cat is a bipolar yowling grumpuss, filled with distaste of the human race and resentful of all the bad cards she perceives life has dealt her. Try to feed her a pill? The room looks like a hair bomb exploded afterwards and still the pill gets coughed up onto the floor. She has a lot to say about life - the emptiness of her food bowl, the state of her bed cushion and how nobody understands her sensitivities. She's a tub o' furry lard, she loathes exercise and only works out in her dreams/nightmares. This means her claws get way too long, and woe to any loving family member who attempts to snip them. But in Dr Sellers willing hands, she passively allows all claw clippings to take place, like she was at a feline nail salon or something. She comes home noticeably untraumatized, and appears actually happy and energized for some time after the vet visit. Even after dental visits! Of course she eventually goes back to her disdainful ways, but that is my family's burden to bear. Needless to say, we've been very impressed with the Cat and Bird Clinic for such good handling of what's normally a perpetually meowing burrito of hate. read more

Dr. Sellers, despite her name, has not sold to them or anyone else. So, while they are not the cheapest, they are certainly not out to gouge you and you will get expert care for your cat or bird. I have been taking our cat Basha to the Cat & Bird Clinic for over 10 years now. About 6 years and some change ago, she had withered away to less than half her weight. We thought the end was near but after a few tests, it was discovered that she had diabetes. We ended up giving her insulin shots and her weight came back and she was fine. Subsequently, Basha came down over the years with glaucoma, high blood pressure, arthritis and lost one of her eyes to a stroke. But she was a tough little beastie and forged on for another year and a half. She finally gave up the ghost last week. I want to thank the amazing staff in general there for always being compassionate both with Basha and with our bank accounts, as sometimes we didn't have the money to pay in full up front. They were clearly more interested in keeping Basha alive and healthy than the money, and I suspect they were equally enamored with our little Ichabod Crane-like feline. I just received a very kind condolence card in the mail this morning from Dr. Sellers and it very much touched my heart that she would take the time out of her day to compose it. Very professional and very compassionate! I would recommend this pet clinic to anybody in the world, and have never left their office feeling anything less than totally satisfied with their work. read more

Looking for a clinic was always a challenge but when we adopted little pancakes from the Humane society they suggested this place, because it only takes birds and cats it would be better there. So we went there and checked in the staff was friendly and we got checked in rather quick, they took care of our little kitty, they examined him and gave him shots, he was the perfect kitty, he didn't even freak out when we got the shot. The vet at Cat & Bird Clinic in Santa Barbara, Ca. killed my gorgeous, spirited Green-winged Macaw. I brought in my beloved 35 yr old (young) macaw who was showing signs of illness. We had been on a family trip and the person in charge of the pets did not really know she was ill. The woman vet at Cat & Bird Clinic and her 'staff ' were unable to diagnose my bird's ailment and seemed completely uninterested in her case. There was no feeling of caring or concern just a sense that they wanted to get home and out of the office. They were almost rude and insisted that they had to go home soon, and that my bird must stay over for observation. I fought this knowing that my bird would be traumatized by being away from her home but they assured that me before the vet herself took off for home, she promised she would thoroughly examine my poor sick girl, She DID NOT. She shirked her duty and her oath to animals when she ignored the severity of my bird's plight and went home!!! The 'staff said she left almost immediately! What I know now is that they wanted the bird to stay over, not for observation, but so they could charge a FEE $$ and not lose the business if I went somewhere else with her. What my bird needed was antibiotics but apparently they neglected her all that afternoon and thru the night because when I called later they said the vet had gone and did not have a diagnosis! Imagine the outright negligence and lack of caring!! I called again and no one knew anything. The following day I called and the vet and reached her only after multiple calls: "Your bird is dying." she told me. There was no explanation. She had simply left the bird alone in a strange cage to sicken even more all those extra hours probably knowing that birds who have been with their owners so long do not do well alone. What she should have said is: "I cannot treat your bird. I am too busy. It is late afternoon and I have plans that are far more important than the life of your bird." Instead she greedily and selfishly hospitalized my bird and ignored her completely during this life and death crisis. It would have made all the difference to medicate the bird then and there or say, "No we cannot help, take her somewhere else." These people KNOW NOTHING of birds and should not be practicing. If I had known this I would have avoided them and probably my dear darling Joaquina would still be with me. She did not deserve to die this way. I took my bird home to die and it was the saddest thing, she kept moaning weakly and calling me. It was too late to seek the advice of a real expert in Exotic bird practice. Too late for Joaquina! No one has suffered more misery than me and Joaquina in those last hours just because of the negligence and lack of knowledge of the Santa Barbara, Ca." Cat & Bird Clinic." Since they were too inexperienced to diagnose the bird I requested a Necropsy and had poor Joaquin's remains sent to UC Davis where the diagnosis of a Bacterial Infection came back along with her remains a week or two later. I buried my poor innocent macaw under her favorite Mulberry tree. She had come into my life 35 years ago . She was my best friend and we went thru so many good and bad times together. Joaquina was so much more than a pet. It is a crime that a Vet would start a practice and hang up a shingle that says BIRD when she obviously has insufficient training in the entire area of Exotic birds and their health and well being! A business like this is capable of causing great harm to animals. read more

I am a huge fan of the cat and bird clinic. The reception folks are awesome, the waiting area is calming and pleasant. They are compassionate and caring, not only toward animals but toward their people as well. The place is always clean and nice-smelling. I would give Cat and Bird five stars, but I've found that their high volume of clients makes it nearly impossible to get an appointment for an acute issue. I usually end up having to leave my pet overnight so someone can get around to examining them after closing time. I trust Dr. Sellers's expertise, but for most stuff I now go to Dr. Brand at San Roque Pet Hospital because she can usually see my pet in a day or two rather than a week or two. read more

The process for getting your cat in the door was handled smoothly and effectively, incorporating all the CDC guidelines for distancing, masks,etc. The Vet called me as I waited in the parking lot and fully explained what had been seen on the needed x-ray, presented options for treatment and answered my questions. The Staff were friendly and efficient, and I got my cat back home quickly. I have always found Dr. Sellers willing to answer questions, listen, and spend time caring for her patients. We are so lucky to have such a great bird vet locally for our feathered friends. A good bird vet is so hard to find. This office is especially great at treating older pets, who often have chronic conditions that needs special care. My sister who is a total cat person only took here cats to here. So, when are cat needed some work done we checked Yelp and read the good reviews here. We brought our cat in for a few different treatments and they really took care of her and even cut her nails for free and did all the extra check ups for free. The staff knows what they are doing. I've never met such caring and competent veternary staff! I've been taking my (senior) kitty to Dr. Pruett since I adopted him and I couldn't be happier. She's always so patient in addressing my concerns; I never get the feeling that I'm wasting their time or asking too many questions. Whenever my cat gets sick she explains what she thinks is happening and suggests all the possible options before proceeding. By her suggestion, I switched my cat to Hill's Science Diet, and the difference in his health and energy is incredible. The staff here are very knowledgable and helpful when explaining how to administer medications, and I've never felt like they perform or charge me for unnecessary diagnostic tests, etc. I find the costs quite reasonable (even for a poor college student such as myself) and I can usually get an appointment within three days. Brought my Silkie Rooster in to treat a feather cyst. I was under the impression that binging him to the vet would cost me and arm and a leg for something easy... I was pleasantly surprised!! The treatment only cost a total of $75! Which is nice when you're prepared to spend double that amount. The staff was very friendly and the Vet was exceptionally knowledgeable in poultry, on top of that very sweet. We went in for a check up (and pedi) and, even with the whole Covid-19 restrictions, I LOVED THIS PLACE!
