Picking a hotel in Port Macquarie proved to be a bit tougher than originally anticipated, but I can't tell you how happy we were that The Observatory was our choice. Yes, the room was modern, comfortable, clean, with a stunning patio (refer to ocean face-slapping above) but it was the kindness of the staff that truly made our stay special. From the first chat on the phone with Bronwyn to the surprise champagne upon check-in to the extra shower after we'd already checked out, the staff went above and beyond to make sure our every need (even the unanticipated ones like free underground parking) were attended to. I'll definitely be staying in The Observatory next time I'm in Port Macquarie, which I'm hoping is sooner than later. Have I mentioned the views?

I arrived at night to beautiful chocolates on my bed in my nice clean room. I didn't get to see my beautiful ocean view until the next morning but when I did it was exactly as good as I'd hope. From the moment I called to make my booking the staff where ridiculously kind and helpful a trait that didn't fade with check in. I ended up needing to needed to stay an extra night and they happily moved others around so I wouldn't have to change rooms. My only complaint is that my room was ready for its repaint and recarpeting (not dirty just worn and tired) they are redoing all of them and I just happened to get one that's not done. I saw a few other rooms the same as mine that had already been finished and they really wowed me. Next time I will just ask for one that's already completed.

Staying at this typical New World Motel may well make you feel like you are in David Lynch's film Wild at Heart or any other road movie. The rooms have recently been refurbished and for every standard socket there are also lots of USB points. These are a God-send for travellers who might have enough devices to warrant the use of all of these. TVs and air conditioning come as standard. There's a small pool out front by the roadside. As it was Winter, we didn't get any use out of it, but it looked like a place to cool off and splash around rather than to go for any serious length swimming. Everyone slept like baby logs. Downstairs in the Waterfront Restaurant there's complimentary breakfast in the form of around five cereals as well as toast with marmalade, Vegemite, jam and peanut butter laid on. I raided this extensively, and was full from it. For those who want hot food that is available too at an extra cost. Even if you do stick to the complimentary option, I'd order an espresso-made coffee. (As would most Australians!)

Rude, Insulting and Careless management After a tedious…read moreflight to Sydney, and a 4-and-a-half-hour drive to Port Macquarie where I arrived with my 8-week-old puppy in the late hours of the evening I finally find the Koala Tree Motel where I had booked a deluxe room for the evening, only to find myself stranded outside as the reception was closed for the day. I try the reception's phone number, in hopes that someone would still be onsite to let me into my room, but to no availability. I then see the Emergency phone number which I had to dial several times before anyone would answer, only to hear the man on the other side of the line telling me that he has gone home for the day, and that it was my fault if I had arrived late. As if I am the one supposed to make sure customers arrive during their opening hours. The man, which I assume is the manager or the owner of the hotel, did not seem to care that I was going to spend the night outside because he did not even bother to pick up the phone to see where his clients (in this case me) willing to pay good money to stay in this run down poor excuse for a motel, or even have a contingency plan for late arrivals. He also dared calling me a liar and that there was a long list of people like me on the internet. It seems that I am not the problem here, but management certainly is. I seriously wonder from where they get 4 stars hotel rating, it is a 2-star hotel to me. Thanks to the terrible professionalism of the operator I had to make dozens of phone calls to find a last-minute room, when I finally had the chance to find one at the T's Tennis Resort, where I was greeted by a lovely lady who helped me out with a room. She even gave me a discount as the room she had left was for families, which in all fairness was no problem for me. Anyway, if you ask me, don't bother going to the Koala Tree Motel, find another more pleasant and better rated motel in Port Macquarie, there are plenty of them. I hope this review helps. Cheers
