Authentic local fish market with great selection and affordable prices. The colorful market is nestled on the creek surrounded by vintage fishing vessels. The shop looks like a scene from a Hemingway novel. The shop was recommended to us by locals. I loved the staff which were helpful even though we were overwhelmed by the holiday crowd and selection. The manager described the different shrimp and crab. Prices were cheap ranging from $5 to $9 per pound for most fish. Crab ran higher up to $25 pound for lump. We bought snapper and two different varieties of shrimp including Royal Reds. They promptly filleted the fish for us and all fish were bagged separately with a generous supply of ice. We also picked up fresh horseradish, which made our eyes water in a good way. The shrimp was delicious.... fresher than any I'd ever had. The snapper was equally delicious. I plan to visit this market often during our stay. Highly recommend and well worth our 13 hour drive. read more

Full disclosure: I have a special affection for this place because I spend a lot of sunrises and sunsets watching their fishing boats going out and coming back in from my back yard because they are located a few hundred yards across from me on the Bon Secour river. With that said I found out years ago that their shrimp is always caught locally and never imported, and I have always been able to get nice selections of flounder, shrimp, crawfish, grouper, lobster, and more. The also offer specials on certain choices of fish and you can get special holiday promotions, and make sure that you're welcome to call to reserve special orders for pickup, I've done that more than a few times. One of their specialty offerings is the awesome Gulf Coast royal red shrimp -- this variety has made a name for itself in the seafood world, and especially in the local restaurants with a bright red shell and a crazy good flavor to match. You'll only find these locally, and they are a real treat. The first time I discovered Gulf Shores back in 1993 I got a platter of these steamed beauties with drawn butter and it blew me away. They are large, set almost rich tasting flavor that reminds me of crab, lobster and shrimp all in one bite. If you haven't had these you're missing out, delicious! In the Gulf Shores area, you will find LOTS of places to purchase seafood, but none will be as good as Aquila. These people were the ORIGINAL "finder" of Royal Reds, a type of shrimp that is located much deeper than most boats can reach. All of their seafood is fresh caught and on ice so you can chose for yourself. It doesn't get any fresher than that. The sales area is spars and cramped. Pretty much only one customer at a time can shop the fish case. But who needs "fluff"? That just ads to the price. Last time I was in the shop they had Royal Red "pieces" at an unheard of $5.99/pound. Trust me, it's worth the drive. read more

Left with 8 lbs. fresh shrimp and 2 lb tub of smoked tuna dip (packed for the road trip home) for under $65.00!!! Aquila's is the real deal. P.S. I was in Gulf Shores for Fall Break this year, and my friends were raving about these Royal Red shrimp. So we found a few places to buy them, and took off in the car. Aquila's was the first and LAST place we went to. They are AMAZING! Right on the river, so you can watch the boats come in with their catch; the absolute friendliest people I have met in years, and the freshest seafood with the lowest prices!!! We only bought a few pounds of royal reds and a dozen blue crabs that visit, but the day before we left, we bought a full 30lb case of royal reds for a steal to take home. Their red and vermilion snapper is amazing, great flounder, crawdaddies in season, four or five different kinds of shrimp (white, pink, brown, royal reds), as well as crabs, mussels, oysters, and other sea goodies. I am already making my list for them to ship us for 4th of July, and we are renting a bigger car for our fall trip back down there, to make sure we have room for plenty of seafood goodies! They are on our MUST DO list, as much as the beach or shrimp fest! We will be back, and we will not shop anywhere else. There employees are not only knowledgeable, but so friendly! So, this year (2019) when we decided on Perdido Key we took the extra time to drive to Foley, north of Gulf Shores and get our 5 lb. bag of Royal Reds. Aquila will be my go to place for fresh seafood whenever I'm in the Gulf Shores, Alabama area. Their boats dock just feet from the retail counter! The staff was very friendly, the seafood and fish was very fresh and the prices were fair! Amanda, one of the owner's many family members who work here, helped me from the moment I walked in the door. She cleaned and filleted the fish and gave me tips on preparation. As I was leaving I asked for a recommendation on an honest charter boat for gulf fishing and she didn't disappoint. Her dad, Captian Ronnie, took me and my daughter out for a great day of fishing on his boat a few days later. The day before leaving Gulf Shores, I headed back to Aquila to pick up some Royal Red shrimp to take back home. They showed me how to easily devein them and suggested a variety of packaged seasonings which were available at reasonable prices. And, they packed the shrimp in plenty of ice for the trip. While this store attracts vacationers they are supported by local wholesale and retail customers.
