What an amazing place! The highlight of my trip to Eugene was visiting Ann and her alpacas. Located just 15 minutes away from Downtown Eugene, you can escape to farm life. This is Ann's home with her husband, but she opens it up to visitors on a reservation basis and she accepts donations instead of an entrance fee. She carves out time from her day to host people, so please make sure to show up if you make a reservation. I definitely felt like my stress melted away during the hour I spent at the farm. The males and female alpacas were separated by a fence. They were quite a hoot. I heard a male alpaca fart! Then on the female side, this one alpaca kept messing with another alpaca who was so furious she spit everywhere. At one point, the "bully" hopped on another alpaca's back to get a closer look at the males over the fence. They love eating apples from the tree above, which was very cute to watch. I didn't get to pet them b/c they don't like being touched. The field was covered with daisies and chamomile flowers. There were a few farm cats, who were very sweet too. Overall, it was so nice to meet Ann, who happens to be a fellow Texan, and learn about the alpacas. read more

What a serendipitous discovery! My wife and I were visiting Eugene, Oregon, and the Pacific Northwest for the first time in our lives, driving towards the coast -- and a good friend told us about Aragon Alpacas. We were loving the pastoral scenic farmland on the way to Aragon Alpacas, and found it easily. Ann was an amazing hostess, she answered so many of our questions about alpacas, let us feed them carrots, we discovered some great clothing items, socks, vests, sweaters, mittens, scarves, all made from the amazing alpaca fleece. It was so much fun. The alpacas are amazing - they were mesmerized (by us, or our dog? Our dog.) They reminded me of meerkats, all standing, seemingly at alert because of their long necks, looking in the same direction, all swiveling their heads in unison. Each alpaca has a unique, fantastical, exotic or literary in origin name... eg. Bubinga (African rosewood, which he in fact resembles, and his mother has a south African name), Gryffin (a la Gryffindor, he is red with a white flash)... You really must meet them. Ann and Mike Dockendorf from Aragon raise the most adorable alpacas in town, and if you want to drown in cuteness, go visit them and pet the alpacas! You can arrange ranch visits through their website, but they also have special open days, and you can usually see them when you visit the gift shop on the farm which sells alpaca woollen clothing, scarves, skeins, etc. We stopped by this week only to discover that Aragon is built on the old ranch of a family friend of ours! They've been here for about seven years now, and during the holidays they're open noon to 4pm from Thursday through Sunday, so you can go see the alpacas and pick up christmas gifts. The owner, Ann, came out right away when we drove up and offered to let us into the fenced area to come hug the alpacas :) They have close to 50 in total, in all different colors, and all equally goofy and fluffy looking. Many came up to sniff my hand, not all wanted to be petted today. I finally found an adorable beige one who was lying on the ground and seemed really happy for me to pet his neck and rub him behind the ears for a long time. Sooo adorable!!! I only wish I could have my own alpacas. Aragon sometimes takes their alpacas to events and I think Ann said they do some charitable work with them as well. I'm sure children would love to visit them. The alpacas are well socialized, well behaved, and seem very happy at Aragon. They also have alpacas for sale, for breeding or as pets is you live on a farm or a place with enough grass land. You need about an acre to have a couple of them, and you need at least two because they're pack animals and will be unhappy alone. Highly suggest you watch "The Emperor's New Groove" before or after going here. I know the movie was about a llama, but llamas and alpacas are close enough. I definitely have a different opinion about the movie after seeing the alpacas here. If you don't know what the movie is about, essentially an emperor turns into a llama. When he becomes a llama, he really doesn't like it. When I saw this movie as a kid I was so glad to be a human and not a llama. After coming to this place I realized it might not be so bad to be a llama/alpaca after all. Some were more friendly than others, but they all seemed pretty content. There seemed to be different groups and cliques and a few loners out there. It was kind of like high school. It seemed immature of them, but maybe that's just where they were developmentally at in their lives. Anyways, I had a great time here learning more about alpaca dynamics and I like the new perspective I've gained for the movie, The Emperor's New Groove. read more

Ann & her adorable alpacas are a yearly ritual for our retirement home. We absolutely love visiting the Aragon Alpaca farm. The beautiful, pristine farm is amazing as is Ann. She treats everyone like royalty and is the most hospitable and genuine lady one could ask for. She has shown us the spinning wheels in motion outside in the fresh air, the barn that is now a "artists retreat" and naturally the wonderful gift shop.
