My son, who has neurodivergence, was punished so HARSHLY here that his neuropsychologist asked, unprompted by me, to send a letter to the school teachers to educate them on how to appropriately handle discipline and how to offer support instead, for young children. My son endured extreme trauma here. There are many other farm, forest and outdoor schools in Olympia. I recommend any of them over Fern Gully. I would stay far away from this place. They do not offer a safe environment for your child - they don't supervise the children and they do not keep them safe emotionally.

Licensing later determined the incident appeared consistent with an accident and found no concerns regarding supervision. What was disappointing was the lack of communication and transparency afterward. During our enrollment, cameras were presented as a benefit for emergency situations. However, despite requesting footage on the day of the incident, I never received the opportunity to view it and was given multiple explanations as to why it could not be shared. The owner did not personally contact me until nearly a week later, at 9:30 PM on a Saturday, after seeing an anonymous post I had made in a local moms group seeking advice. Despite already being aware of my daughter's injury and my concerns, that was the first time the owner reached out. Ultimately, we felt trust had been lost and decided this was not the right fit for our family.

There were tanks filled with sea stars, crabs, and fish on display. A different tank housed a representation of a mud flat. Microscopes lined the perimeter on the inside of the building. Several children were peering into them shouting excitedly that "I saw this HUGE plankton!" "Look at THIS!" After I went outside and sat on the fishing dock, adult volunteers at the Nisqually Reach Nature Center took a group of children to the beach to explore. The volunteer staff at the nature center are excellent with kids. Their strong voices can be heard from a distance giving clear, fun instructions to their charges. I heard later from one staff member the kids were attending a summer camp. I didn't have a lot of time to spend at the nature center yesterday, so I will definitely be back! It's a nice area that has a surprising amount of great blue herons and even more seals. Keep in mind: This is a Discover Pass area. You will need a Discover Pass to park here.
