I stopped by Archestratus this past Sunday after wanting to check it out for a while. I had no idea that it was closing on 4/26 after being open in Greenpoint for 10 years. Archestratus is a hidden gem in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood. Specializing in all things food - Sicilian food, in particular - it is a bookstore and cafe bundled together. The book selection is a combination of cookbooks and titles centered around food as an art form. Dry goods and packaged premade Italian dishes are available in their mini marketplace. But beyond the books and groceries is what everyone raves about: the cafe. The sandwiches at Archestratus are great, and the arancini (arancine) are even better. If there's one thing that's a must-get here, it's this Sicilian staple. I would even make a special trip here just to get my hands on them! read more

I was really excited to try the pistachio butter because one of the ladies at the counter spoke highly of it. Calling it the best pistachio butter I could get. So I had high hopes but when I tried some, it tasted bitter and oxidized. It was discouraging. I have had a couple different brands of pistachio butter that were a fraction of the cost that tasted more...stable? I could tell this brand was trying to stay as true to pistachio being the main ingredient but the shelf life might have failed. Since they don't have a phone number, I tried contacting them on Instagram. They asked if I had tried it before and then never followed I hope. I paid $29 dollars for it and was just trying to get my money back but the whole experience definitely jaded me from wanting to go back which is a shame because I bought a great book from them, League of Kitchens, and would have wanted to explore others in the future. read more

Archestratus is a well curated shop featuring some of my favorite things. Cookbooks, novels relating to food, children's books tied to food, cute tchotchkes, and high-quality ingredients (like Rancho Gordo beans!). The shop hosts events including a book club and a cookbook club (where everyone makes a dish from a selected book, potluck style). They have an adorable cafe in the back with delicious savory and sweet items. The food is Italian. I had a delicious risotto ball ($4.50) with roasted eggplant and ricotta salata inside. It was a generous size and a great snack. You can get three balls for $12. Their cookies all look fabulous! I tried the chocolate chip and I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to return. read more

When I told owner Paige Lipari I wanted to move in ... I wasn't joking. But seriously, this place was almost created for a cookbook nerd slash baker like myself!! Which is why I was introduced to the shop in the first place. Even people who know me knew I would love this place. When I had to downsize my apartment, all my books went to my sisters garage but my cookbooks. My cookbooks! I couldn't dare shove them in a dark room. They are meant to be displayed. They bring me joy and they guide me in creating beautiful meals and treats that make my friends and family happy. The curating of the cookbooks is impressive!! I saw so many of my favorites from local bakeries cookbooks like Baked, Four and Twenty Blackbirds to local restaurants like Buvet and Nomad. Then the treats section had heavy hitters like Dorie Greenspan. Vegetarian cookbooks had all the staples like Moosewood. And there is even a food memoir section. I have meaning to get Colin Atrophy Hagendorf's "Slice Harvester". This little punk rocker ate a slice of pizza at every pizza joint in Manhattan and lived to talk about it. I already started reading this and it's hilarious!!! Oh then there's the cute little kid sized kitchen area with food books like one of my childhood favorites Maurice Sendak's "In the Night Kitchen". And I also had an obsession with child size kitchens from the day my little brother was born. I got to play with one and I wanted one ever since. And if allllllll that wasn't enough. They have more of my favorite past time, coffee and treats!! I wanted the pistachio lace cookie but they were all devoured by the time I got there. From what I hear Lipari makes these Italian treats. I think I feel future BFF coming on. Yesterday was independent bookstore day. If you spent a $100 you got a free tote (Baggu brand so yeah...quality) and if you bought a cookbook you would get a free cookie. I bought a coffee, a good memoir and chatted this young ladies ear off. I'm pretty sure she regretted pouring me regular coffee but she was super sweet. And last but not least. The bathroom here is huge. I absolutely love the Andy Warhol cake print and the measuring cup vase for the flowers. I will be visiting more often until my move in is complete! Ha! Alright... I'll just come for books and cookies. read more

Archestratus Books & Foods is the local Greenpoint quaint bookstore you never knew you needed in your life. Just recently opened this past weekend, Archestratus has hundreds and hundreds of books relating to cooking and cuisines of various cultures around the world, in addition to artistic greeting cards from Studio Sarah and a variety of sketch and journal books. Whether you are seeking books as a carnivore or a vegetarian/vegan, books on paella or books on healing with food - Archestratus has it all. Plus, they have a liquor license (bonus!). So, at the back of the bookstore you'll find a cozy cafe serving beer, wine, and fun homemade snacks. The owner of the place is super sweet, and is there to help anyway she can. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Brooklyn. And really if you're in any of the five boroughs if you're a cook of any kind. Can't wait to visit again soon! read more

Absolutely LOVED this fabulous new cookbook store (!!) in Greenpoint. We read about it in the NYTimes and had to check it out for ourselves. We love to cook so this place was heaven. Books are organized well, with sections for different countries/backgrounds (e.g., Italian, Jewish, Caribbean, Nordic), different techniques (e.g., pickling, farming, baking), as well as by memoir, etc. We spent an hour perusing and could have stayed longer. What was most fantastic was the collection. Yes, all the newest, most up-to-date cookbooks were on display but also community coil-bound cookbooks and other unusual gems. Used books are also included among the mix so that you can score some really great deals - I found two copies of a huge, fantastic grilling book in very good condition for $11 each! Can't wait to visit again and bring friends. The woman at the front counter, who I'm assuming may be the owner, was friendly and very sweet. Cafe in the back with drinks and snacks, too. read more

It took a long time for me to notice this place was a restaurant in addition to a bookstore. I am so glad I did because the food is incredible. I grew up with a true Italian grandma making me food every day, and this place is like stepping into a time machine and tasting it all again. Everything is fresh and made from scratch in a way that no other place around here can touch - especially not for affordable prices. The meatball sandwich is ridiculous - I have a hard time not ordering it every time. But I want to try everything! They are famous for their rice balls, and they really are great. So good that I signed up for the class to learn how to make them. This place is a unique neighborhood gem and I am so happy it is here. Keep doing what you are doing! read more

I knew there had to be a place like this somewhere in the city. I'm glad I finally found it. My wallet may not be so glad about it. Archestratus appeals to three of my senses immediately, sight, smell, and taste. It's very well organized, with a large section on New York City cuisine... but I guess the world does end at Yonkers, because not so much on other parts of New York State (a selection of Moosewood restaurant cookbooks would have gone well here) - not that I can't find those books in upstate New York anyway. I was also surprised at the relatively small number of African cookbooks. But those are minor compared to the wealth of styles of books offered here, and my ethnic cookbook collection appreciates it. But I think I need to buy another bookshelf before returning here. read more

They have pivoted and worked so hard revamping their store to serve the community with fresh bread, fresh farm veggies, homemade delicious Arancines, Rainbow cookies, incredible delicious salads, chicken - different preparation, each time I drop by, vegan dishes and too many other things to name. Book club meetings where everyone cooks a recipe from the cookbook and brings it? Check. I think I'm officially obsessed with this place. I popped in here once a couple of years ago during the day and loved browsing all of the foodie books. I also remember getting a rainbow cookie that blew me away. Fast forward to now- I just got home from their Thursday night eggplant parmesan dinner. OMG. The food was amazing. Everyone who works there is awesome. They let me taste a couple of wines before deciding which glass to order. The amount of food was insane. I took some eggplant parm home but still did manage to clean my dessert plate of peach cobbler with a generous scoop of homemade whipped cream. This store is gorgeous. An immense collection of cookbooks and books about food to satiate your hunger. And every item of food I've had in the cafe has been phenomenally delicious - I dream about the biscuits and pistachio lace cookies. Please try the cookies!!!! So many cookbooks, it's a wonderful place to browse and take home something new, whether you're looking to master a new challenge in the kitchen or just a need a toolkit for quick weeknight dinners. They also have food memoirs, chef's memoirs, used cookbooks, and ones illustrated with comic-style drawings. In addition they have homemade cookies, coffee, food specials by the day, fountain pens, journals, cards, and a great seating area in the back. There's also a nice selection of food magazines and lots of the Short Stack editions, which are little pamphlet-like cookbooks, impeccably designed, each focusing on only one star ingredient. Wandering into this little heaven on a Thursday evening I smelled garlic. Turns out they cook a Sicilian meal on Thursday nights. The aroma made browsing irresistible. I finally decided upon a book and turns to the tiny cafe in the back. I chose two homemade cookies--pistachio lace and jasmine buranelli--and watched the chef/baker prepare for dinner. Archestratus is so amazing! Can't recommend this place enough. All the food is incredible including the Pistachio cookies and pizza. They also have a good selection of beers and some wine. They also have some really interesting events in the evening that I haven't been to but I'm interested in going to (including a drinks fm draw). In December, I booked the space for a private birthday party and the food was excellent and the rates were very reasonable. The staff are wonderful, be sure to say hi to the owner Paige. read more

Wonderful selection of cookbooks! Small and quiet. Large variety--bbq, nyc, local, memoir, baking, etc. It was organized well, bright, and easy to peruse. The space felt warm and friendly. They also have notebooks and stationery items. They have used cookbooks on sale on carts out in front of the shop. There is also a cafe in the back, but it didn't seem open on that day. We were there on Halloween and it looked like they were setting up a movie screening in that section. Really cute shop! read more

Archestratus is a tiny store with the purest heart in Greenpoint. First of all, I love Paige, the owner. You see her heart and soul in everything within these walls. The food and coffee here is so special. Paige cooks fresh italian meals throughout the week, and I usually stop by for their cookies, which are insane. The chocolate chip cookie is made with almond paste, and definitely has pine nuts, giving it a subtle nutty taste and crunch. There's also a pistachio lace cookie, and I kinda have dreams about that creation. From the front, some might never know that there's a little kitchen in the back, and comfy places to sit and do work. The books are a thoughtfully curated collection of cookbooks and books about food. You'll find journals, pens, gifts. I drop in to get a box of cookies before a get-together, or to pick out a gift for a friend. There's happy hour on Saturdays and when you're lucky, you'll remember pizza-making night.
