Make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes or trainers because it is a bit of a hike & there are rocky areas/stairs you have to climb through. It can be challenging in spots so you really do need to be ready for uneven terrain. The tour was very informative, especially learning about the bats that live in the caves & the surrounding ecosystem. The guide shared a lot of interesting facts that made the experience engaging & easy to follow. She threw in mad jokes as well. I needed those laughs. We explored multiple caves, not just Cueva Ventana,& each one had its own feel & character, which made the tour even more interesting. Once inside, the views were absolutely stunning. Seeing the ocean framed through the opening of Cueva Ventana was def a highlight, but the other caves added to the sense of adventure & made the whole experience feel like a real exploration. I left feeling like I had gotten a real mix of nature, history, and adventure all in 1 visit. It was worth taking the time & all the walking to see all of it. As a bonus, the tour guide gave me a ripe mamey sapote fruit which I enjoyed @ my Airbnb(b/c I needed to clean & cut it). It tasted somewhat like a mango but less sweet/juicy & more dense. I loved getting a taste of the local culture!

I heard about this beach from the local owners of a cute rockaway beach/long beach style boutique…read moreshop in town. We took their advice after asking about nearby snorkeling locations and were blown away. The flat rocks and reef right off the coast attract all sort of different sea life and as result, this quickly became over favorite snorkeling spot we found on our trip. It really feels as clear as it can get. The feeling of watching hundreds of beautiful and blue fish glide beneath you while you're effortlessly floating along the warm saltwater is like no other. This beach is extremely chill and low key. Parking is super simple as people just park where they can along the side of the very long dirt road that leads down to the beach. You're basically behind the backyards of a long row of houses that line the beach so everyone is mindful of the neighbors. As with many of the beaches in Puerto Pico, the jetty corners of the beach curiously invite you to take a peak around them. One fella set up an entire hammock within a large tree and even started a small campfire. No one seemed to mind, again it was all very chill. The beach gets its name from this set particular of steps (stairs?) that jet out from the water. It must have been from a previous dock or structure that was originally there and it makes for a really and unique cool setting. There is also a swing set that is a popular photo spot on social media but I could not manage to get up up on it (seems like it's easier to do during low-tide). We did however to capture some pretty fun photos of different angles all around the beach. So if you find yourself on the west side of the island and want to experience some phenomenal snorkeling, you've got to find this spot!

There used to be trolleys where they drive you up but they no longer have them so you need to walk the whole way there. Heading to the caves, you are walking down so it's pretty easy. Going back you're heading up which is quite a workout! But there are places with seats along the way if you need a break to catch your breath. Our tour guide "Amy" was really knowledgeable and kind. The whole trip took about an hour and half so we weren't rushed and had plenty of time to take pictures. It is recommended to wear sneakers because in the caves, it's wet so the floors get really slippery.

And then its into the cave itself. The cave is just amazing, and WAY bigger than I would have imagined. There are nine stations where you can listen to an auditour, but also do listen to your guide. Ours was awesome and kept finding vinegaroons. We didn't see any bats, but the hurricane a few years ago mostly wiped them out, and I guess they haven't rebounded yet. :( Still, there were.. signs of many bats. Pro Tip, they warn you that you may get wet. You probably won't, but still be prepared. I nearly took this to mean "wear beach shoes." Don't. Wear good shoes, and make sure they're slip resistant.

You can tell you are there because there is a light, if you turn left it's into the beach area and paid parking ($5). Or turn left and you can park on the street for free. We walked across the whole park and explored, took pictures, ran from chickens (well roosters), etc. If you go later in the week there is a restaurant that is open (Wed - Sat or Thurs - Sat). That would have a pretty cool view and is in a pretty old historic building. On the way back we walked across the civilian bridge towards the beach. The second we got on the bridge we got cooled off because the beach breeze made it that far. Walked back along the beach and had some additional photo opps. Keep this in mind, the heat of the day it does get warm. It's easy, relatively flat walking, but hot non the less. Take some water so you don't get over heated. We'd recommend this as part of your stay in San Juan if you like exploring historical type locations.

Well,…read morewhether you slip, hit your head and hallucinate because you *chose* to skate during bad weather through a 1/2 inch of rain; OOORR you simply safely stroll around looking for a nice spot to take your kids to, just know this park is one of the oldest in the island, and a nice, old-school way to kill time. But as is the case with beaches in Puerto Rico, avoid it during very late afternoon and night time unless there's a special event of some sort. There's an awesome nearby hamburger joint, creatively called "El Hamburger" :-P where you can have the best cheap burger afterwards. Or perhaps go to Old San Juan or Condado, which are both less than 10 minutes away by car. :-)
