This place is quite cheap and very high quality! From the outside, it does look like a small, hole in the wall place. The inside is pretty unassuming, too. However, this seems like a family run place which is always great. I ordered a shredded chicken empanada, 2 shredded beef empanadas, a cachapa, choriqueso empanada, and churros. I really quite liked everything! First of all, I account capitalize the value you get for this place. These empanadas are hefty and can make a decent meal in and of themselves. I especially recommend this spot if you are a student. The shredded beef empanadas were definitely my favorites. It was flavorful, filling, and the corn was not too gritty. In fact, it was more silky. The shredded chicken was also great. Neither of the meat based empanadas had chewy beef. The meat was tender and delicious. I took a risk with the choriqueso empanada, and had mixed feelings about it. If you like chorizo, definitely give it a try, since it is full of chorizo! However, I never tried chorizo, so it was an odd flavor. The cheese was great, though. The cachapa was a bit sweeter than I expected (comparing it to Cilantro and Ajo), but was still very good. It's a little small but also very inexpensive. I ordered the plain version and thought the cheese was delicious, and it had a ton of cheese. The churros were quite good as well (first time having churros). They made them right in front of me as I was picking up the order. You get 6 and a choice of sauce. They were still warm, but a bit too hard. There wasn't a whole lot of sauce on them, too, but they were still soft and tasty in the inside. Overall, this is a great value place and there is a decently large menu. Seems like an authentic Venezuelan place. I recommend trying the beef empanadas most! read more

Hands down one of my favorite lunch places in Pittsburgh! This place was walking distance to me while I was in town for a conference. I needed a quick option for lunch to go between sessions and this place hit the spot. Everything is labeled if not made directly with a gluten-free corn flour mixture. This was the first time since going GF that I could have an empanada! I tried the chicken and beef. Both were cooked to a great golden brown with lots of filling. Seriously, they did not skimp on the meat! I recommend the cilantro sauce. Get one per empanada to pour into it as you're eating. Get some extra napkins because there will be extra juices and drool! SO. GOOD. SC and I were walking around downtown and wanted to pick up some lunch before we headed back to the mitten. We picked Arepittas because of the positive Yelp reviews and we thought Venezuelan food sounded awesome. We've had arepas before but this was the first time we had it fresh (vs from the grocery store) and MANNN was it good! We ordered: Cachapas- sweet corn pancakes that are deep fried and filled with grilled white cheese. I've always loved sweet corn pancakes and these were AMAZING. It was crunchy, sweet, and warm and the cheese added just the right amount of savory balance Pabellon arepa- shredded beef, black beans, sweet plantains, and grated white cheese. There was everything to love about this- meat, veg, sweet and savory, all enveloped in a grilled cornmeal bread. It truly is a meal in itself (handheld too!). I got this with the cilantro sauce which was fantastic and added some creamy texture to the dish Marinera empanada- cornmeal dough fried and filled with shrimp, squid, octopus, mussels and scallops. SC thought this was well seasoned and full of seafood. Chicha Criolla- rice drink with whole milk, condensed milk, sugar, cinnamon, and spices. I got this because I love horchata and thought I would like this too. I liked that it wasn't overly sweet and had good flavor. It was unexpectedly thick, like between milkshake and milk consistency. I preferred it to be a little runnier so I waited for the ice to melt to thin it out a little. Papelon con limon- lemonade with brown cane sugar. SC liked this and thought it tasted a little like tamarind. It was tart and not overly sweet There's a variety of sauces you can choose from (one per item) including non-spicy (ie, cilantro, garlic, avocado, and a couple others) and a few spicy sauces. Definitely come check this place out if you haven't already- the food is homemade and so delicious. The family that runs Arepittas is also very friendly. Please support your local small businesses- this place is well worth it! We are looking forward to eating here again next time we're back in the area! read more

I FINALLY tried Arepittas at the Original Pittsburgh Taco Festival, and can't wait to visit their downtown location. First impression - the employees were SO nice. A man approached us in line and gave us large laminated menus and explained what their most popular dishes were. He gave recommendations for meat tacos/arepas and vegetarian. I really appreciated that because most booths didn't have a vegetarian option. The line was long, but we started looking over the menu while we waited. I ordered 1 eggplant taco: Grilled eggplant saute with house seasoning, caramelized onion, tomatoes and guasacaca chunky. I thought the eggplant filling was unique and was excited to try it. I also got 1 vegan chorizo taco: Soy vegan sausage, sauteed with onions, peppers and tomatoes. We also tried the tres leches cake. I loved watching them make each order since they all had many ingredients. The tacos were amazing!! I loved both of them and actually was concerned for a minute that the soyrizo was actual chorizo. It was cooked perfectly. The eggplant was my favorite though! Unfortunately the tres leches cake had been sitting in the hot sun so it was very warm when I took a bite. I initially had my first Arepittas experience at the Taco Festival and it was love at first bite and I knew that I would visit their actual location. Two weeks ago I had lunch over there and the food was reminiscent of the taste from the festival. It's cozy little spot with amazing food. Delicious dishes. If you've never had an Arepa, you need to remedy that - and there's no better place than the unassuming yet accessible (by foot or parking garage) Arepittas. I work in the Grant Building, so it was an easy walk. Venezuelan food isn't terribly far off from Mexican or Caribbean, so if you've never tried it before don't be overwhelmed. All of the dishes are explained very well on their website and their menu by the cash register. Everything is made fresh, and you can expect to wait at least 8-10 min for your food when they aren't busy - it's worth the wait. The Pabellon Criollo (National Dish) is what I got, and it was a heavy lunch which was perfect for me on this day because I was HUNGRY. The plantains are slightly sweet and compliment the beef, which is so flavorful, and the rice / beans and arepa. There are so many menu options, I plan to go back soon and sample more of what they have to offer. The seating is limited and cozy, but works for their space. Everything was clean and the employees are very accommodating, kind and and efficient. The only thing I'm upset about is that I didn't find out about this place sooner! I stopped by on my lunch break on a whim. It was busy inside. While I waited for my food to be made, I sat by two young professionals. They got to flirting. Chemistry was good, body language was positive. But as the conversation dragged, the woman's food was ready. I held my breath as she grabbed her food and turned to say "well, it was nice to meet you..." I feared the worst. I stopped in Arepittas after arriving downtown mid-afternoon and needing a light meal. After a bit of wandering I ran across Arepittas and, knowing how delicious an authentic arepa can be, decided to give it a shot. It was excellent! I like to keep things basic so the arepa Pelua (shredded beef & cheese) was calling my name. In my view you can best judge the quality of a restaurant's food through dishes with a limited amount of toppings and sauces, and I'm happy to report my arepa was delicious! The corn cakes were hot and fresh and the beef had a very nice savory flavor...definitely on a par with arepas I had while traveling in South America. So, if you know how good arepas can be or want to experience them for the first time I'd definitely recommend Arepittas! read more

The arepas were good, I really liked the cilantro sauce. The sauce added a good savory flavor to the meat . I got the Reina and Shrimp arepa with the Venezuelan horchata (I forgot the name of it). I personally didn't enjoy the drink it had a different cinnamon taste than I'm used to, tasted like artificial cinnamon gum. Other than the cinnamon the drink has potential! It's really thick like a watered down milkshake. I paid about $24 for everything . I had never had Arepas (pronounced a-rape-as) or Venezuelan food at all until I moved across the street from this hidden gem. If you like chalupas, you will love Arepittas! The "bun" is kind of a fried corn pancake that is split like an English muffin. The fillings are so savory and delicious you can't go wrong. I have to hold myself back from eating these every day, they are so good! The owner is super friendly and remembers your name. He even called me by name when we randomly saw one another on the street! If you are in the neighborhood before their 4:00 pm closing time, be sure to give this place a try. read more

Always walked past this place but today decided to give it a try. First thing you notice is the incredible aroma and sound of sizzling oil as you walk in. You encounter a straightforward menu and everything looks incredible. We decided to get the classic vegetarian pabellon arepa and the soy chorizo arepa. The pabellon arepa was truly fantastic- authentic, fresh and went great with the sauce. They soy chorizo version was definitely flavorful but in retrospect we would have loved to try another vegetable one. Taste is quite authentic and we'll be back soon.. maybe even tomorrow read more

Ok this place is BANGIN. I got the Susanna arepa and a Tres leches (because I'm a Tres leches snob and if they have it I'm gonna try it) and they both were so freaking good I could cry.
