I arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon and they said my room wasn't ready yet and to try back at 3 PM. No worries. I was able to hang out for a few minutes waiting and went back and my room was ready. I was able to bring up my things and get settled. The 3rd floor of the wing is under renovations but that never was an issue. I went to go turn on the TV and the remote didn't work. Not a huge deal since I wouldn't be in the room long but I mentioned it to the front desk and they said they would find a replacement but it didn't happen until the next day when we found a maintenance worker. Which is fine because the channels weren't working at all on the tv the next morning anyways. The breakfast was better in the past. They replaced all the real plates with paper and the silverware is all plastic now. They even downsized the offerings for food and it's still a good breakfast but it the very basics. Overall, this is an okay experience. It is in a good location that is easy to navigate to but the amenities seem to be dwindling here. Next year when I come up to Brantford, I'll definitely debate staying here or somewhere else.

We learned that our fireplace was not functional when we tried to turn it on, and Joanne Brooks, General Manager must be fully aware by now that the rooms in the East wing have non‑functioning fireplaces and the rooms are in poor, worn, dirty condition. The fireplaces continue to be listed as an amenity on their website in the East wing, which is misleading to customers and was not indicated at time of booking which is what was claimed we were told at reception. We doubt this is the first complaint, and it appears the fireplace photo for these rooms are actually from the Gretzky wing. We were provided an adjusted the rate and bonus points for the non‑functioning fireplace. Besides the one on the door, we did not see one NO SMOKING sign in the room next to the detectors as is the norm in other hotels in Canada. This would contribute to the evidence of smoking of cigarettes and marijuana observed from the hallways at various times of day. There are only heat detectors wired to the alarm system. The battery operated smoke/CO detectors can easily be pulled from the wall allowing smoking to go undetected. This is a loophole in Ontario law according to the Brantford Fire Department. We have stayed in the past at the other three major chains in Brantford, and all of these hotels are much newer and cleaner. We have never complained about these hotels as their standards appear higher despite being a budget offering. I can say at least the bathroom is clean though the door makes it hard to get in and out of the room. The pool area had a Grade B rating for the spa earlier that week when inspected by the Grand Erie health department. Everyone raves about the Gretzky wing, and there is no way we would ever stay in the East wing again unless it is fully renovated.

I spent the extra $10 a night for a jacuzzi in my room. The room was $129/night. The bed was comfy and I slept well. There was a mini fridge and microwave oven in my room. Parking was free as is WIFI (it's fast). There was a complimentary continental breakfast with hot options (I grab some yogurt and an apple to go in the mornings). There is a salt water pool but I didn't use it. There is no restaurant in the hotel and no options within walking distance. Last evening there was a reception ... free appies and drinks from 6pm to 8pm. It happens Monday to Thursday evenings. I checked it out. They set out bottles of wine, beer and pop along with veggies, chicken wings and pepperoni pizza (which I'm assuming they ordered from a nearby pizza place) and you helped yourself. I had enough wings and pizza that I didn't need to have supper (I'd had a big lunch). I liked the hotel, my room and the friendliness of the staff but I found it was a bit too isolated.

This proprietor does not care about anybody and will gladly take your money and put you in a situation that traps you and leaves you desperate. For a motel room that nearly put me in the hospital I had an allergic reaction thought that I was going to die and then I was put into another room hesitantly beg him I practically had to beg for a roll toilet paper or soap for nearly $700 they wanted to provide nothing. The rooms are infested with insects and mold, and I had to clean my room thoroughly myself and the towels that I use to clean it with were literally black and I'm not talking one towel. I'm talking this was several times. I Brant County health unit should get involved with this place and health. Canada should also be involved because it is completely unfair that this person. Leaving me destitute as I'm already in a situation where I'm sick and I was illegally evicted after living in my home for 33 years. And like us to take advantage of people that are truly a need actual Canadians who were born here get treated like garbage. But if we were to go to India or Pakistan. Entry the beautiful people of those countries and their culture with the disrespect and hatred that they treat us with I'm sure the consequences would severe! I'm appalled I'm hurt I feel taken advantage of $700 was all the money I have in the world moldy, dirty rodent and insect infested room, and this person Would rather see me die, than me die, then take care of me. Now I know that for $60 you can't expect a lot but the room was the worst I have seen in any motel in my extensive travels. I would not stay there due to the horrible condition of the room and the manager refused to refund my money. The carpet was stained black and had obviously beed flooded more than once. The carpet had wrinkles and lumps from whatever nightmares it had seen. There were brown stains on the wall that were beyond nicotine. I don't even want to describe the stains on the bedspread but the phrase primordial ooze came to mind. The window blinds were broken with missing slats. The bathroom was disgusting. There were burn marks on the carpet, comforter and sink, which did not give me the feeling that this place was in anyway going to be a good place to be when it finally burns down. I cannot describe the mattress or sheet thread count because frankly there was no way I was going to lie down on that bed without a hazmat suit and decontamination team. The room was tiny. They had not aired it out before we got there which for a smoking room is not great but that was not the deal breaker. The manager told us that he often has people refusing to stay in the room which he blames on it being a smoking room. My suggestion to the motel owners is that they spend a night in their own motel and then call for a disaster clean up crew and a priest. Don't get fooled by reviews and the small town family run exterior. Check the room before you pay and plan for backup accommodations.

Hosts Kim and Kevin are so welcoming and knowledgeable about all the doings in Stratford. The house is impeccably decorated, with tons of books to read and spaces to sit outside and enjoy the gardens. Refrigerators for personal use. Rooms and beds are comfortable and many have private decks. Tea and cookies always available. The most wonderful thing is that a big thermos of coffee is brought up into hallway in early morning for self serve. How great is that? No getting dressed! Outstanding ample breakfast each day featuring top notch very fresh and innovative breakfast items. A station with granola, fresh breads, croissants, biscuits and homemade jams starts one off. Then a hot item of astonishing quality. Dietary restrictions accommodated. Cannot wait to return next year!

Kevin got back to me immediately and replied to my inquiry and we quickly and efficiently arranged everything. My friend and I arrived a bit earlier than we'd initially indicated, but both Kevin and Kim were welcoming and helpful. We were shown to a reasonable sized room on the second floor and all necessary amenities were explained to us. The decor of the place wasn't really my cup of tea, but the room was clean and cozy, so I can put aside my own personal aesthetic. The private bathroom was a decent size and well laid out. The bed was a wee bit smaller than I'd imagined, but it was very comfortable. My favourite part of my stay though hands down had to be my breakfast! Because Kevin and Kim knew we had an early start, they got breakfast going extra early for us. We started with freshly baked croissants, lemon poppy seed cake, and assorted fresh berries. DEELISH! Then we had poached eggs with hollandaise sauce with heirloom tomato on a wonderfully salty rosti. SO SO GOOD!!! The eggs were cooked to perfection and the splash of pesto on the tomato added a perfect kick. I was in heaven. I love coming to Stratford to see the theatre. Next year, I am totally coming back here, but I am going to make sure that I have dinner at the Old Rectory too!

The room had 2 queen sized beds along the left wall, and along the right wall there was a wardrobe, a small desk area with one chair, a dresser, and a small fridge. I found out that the rooms are all the same size, but there were at least 3 other room designs: you could get a room with 1 bed and a sitting area; one bed with sitting area and 2 bathrooms, or a separate bedroom with 1 bath, a sitting room, and a kitchen. For this stay, I wish we had gotten a 1-bed with sitting area, but what we got worked. Staff were friendly and helpful. This hotel is really compact inside. The one thing I missed was a lounging area in the lobby. To gather in larger groups and people-watch. Here they had a couple of couches and a chair in front of the elevator and in between the check in desk and breakfast area. But the staff monitoring breakfast activities sat there until they were needed in the breakfast nook, sometimes drinking their own beverages and talking amongst themselves.

It's a historic building from 1889 that now houses several local vendors. Feel like having a pint? Try the Paris Beer Co. Interested in local meats and and sausages? Try the Link Street Sausage House. Fresh bread? Try the Good Bread Company, which sells delicious loaves, gourmet ketchup, and butter tarts. Fresh seafood? They have that too. I'm sure the vendors have changed throughout the pandemic but several mainstays include Cake and Crumb, and the Bird and Bee Vintage. I loved the wonderfully curated eclectic vintage items at the Bird and Bee. I wanted to buy so many things, from unique pins to clothing to candles and jewelry. While I resisted the urge to buy the delicious sweet treats that Cake and Crumb sells, there were several amazing looking brownies, macarons, and cakes that were whispering "eat me!" They also had beautiful market bouquets of flowers, and amazing Instagram worthy rainbow grilled cheese sandwiches from The Grilled Cheese Effect. We opted for the Lumber Jill grilled cheese sandwich with multigrain bread, peameal bacon, generous amounts of melted cheddar, maple syrup and lots of blueberry compote. It was like French toast and grilled cheese had a delicious (albeit messy) baby. I appreciated that they limit the number of people in the hall and conduct Covid screening and enforce the wearing of masks while in the market hall. The washrooms are clean. I also liked that there was some multicultural influences evident in the market, from pierogies to Arepa Love. Surprisingly there wasn't a place for coffee in the food hall at the time of my visit. Also since they enforce use of masks in the market hall, there really wasn't a place to sit and eat your food unless you went to an outside bench, or were seated at the Paris Beer Co patio.
