This place is a hidden gem for anyone that currently is serving or is a veteran. Once your military status has been verified, your welcomed in by the kindest group of people. This is not a USO but a place that runs strictly off of donations. There's a table for those needing to do some work or several really large recliners to sit back and relax in. They even have a couple beds for use as well. Hungry or thirsty? They will cook you a meal as well. The list is always different depending on what is available in the pantry. I truly am not sure how to react. Shocked was the closest I can think of. Being 100% disabled, service connected and having a valid Veterans Administration ID Card with service connected, they still would not let me in. Even the USO lets me in and they suck. The Armed Forces Center at Detroit Metro lets me in and they also run on 100% donations. Every time I am in Detroit, I drop at least a $20.00 in their donation container, whether I go in or not. I was denied access to the establishment all because my veteran Id issued from the Department of Veteran Affairs was not acceptable to them. I could not believe that I was not let in. I did research and because I do have a long layover, I expected this place to be where I could go in between traveling. Only to find out I couldn't enter the premesis. This establishment does not serve the armed forces. honestly USO is better and they need to be replaced for the sake of other member who do not have a purple heart or only have their VA ID card. read more

I visited this facility decades (1990s) ago! I returned to the States on a military charter flight. Due to various regulations concerning the wearing of uniforms, I had to change out of my military uniform before I could board a commercial flight home. I was directed here to change into civilian clothes. I wish I could have taken advantage of more than the bunk room (to change clothes). The volunteers were warm and accommodating, and understood my plight. They got me in and out because my flight was being held specifically for me to board. It is nice to know these volunteer organizations exist and I am so grateful for the assistance provided to me. Keep up the good work! read more

Retired Army traveling home from overseas with my family and a minor guest traveling with us. And although 3 of the 4 of us have ID cards our minor guest wasn't allowed. They said we could come in but our minor guest would have to stay out in outer lobby by herself. Unacceptable. Be better AFSC and have some common sense and courtesy to military families. read more

I am so incredibly thankful for the Armed Forces Service Center. I had a long layover at MSP and planned to come relax at the lounge rather than sit in the airport for multiple hours... come to find out I was going to be staying much longer than anticipated. As soon as I arrived at my gate I found out my flight was delayed overnight for 12+ hours... bummer. But I walked back to the lounge and rented a bunk for the night. Of course, it's no Hilton, but it was much more comfortable than the airport floor or chairs! The volunteers were very welcoming and did their best to make me feel at home and comfortable. They have snacks and drinks available along with some light food upon request (bagels, hot dogs, sandwiches...). I'd definitely recommend checking this out if you're current/past military. It's a much more comfortable way to travel! read more

I have been to the Armed Forces Center in the Minneapolis airport a few times. The appreciate and smiles you get when you walk in gives a warm feeling. Being retired military it's not that common to get a genuine appreciative moment about it. And when I have gotten props from someone before I don't feel worthy of that. But here it's great to walk in and get that hello. It's like walking into a VFW hall and hanging with some people you don't really know but you have a comradery with. A couple weeks ago I was going through and I had to hunt the place down. I had moved from outside security to INSIDE security. In fact it was now a solid 15 minute walk down at the end of a new terminal. The new spot, once inside the construction, was beautiful. There was dozens of lounge chairs, a large TV with the game on, and some complimentary sodas. I kicked back for almost an hour and had time to relax before my flight. They had stay over beds that my daughter and I actually used last time we had 4 hours to layover there. I am grateful for this Armed Forces Center, it's the best I have seen. read more

I don't know how you can give this place anything less than 5 stars!!! Some people just don't know how to appreciate things. This facility is not associated with the USO. It is the Armed Forces Service Center. It's located just outside airport security and a lil funky trying to get to it. But making the visit is well worth it!!! They offer plenty of free food, reclining chairs, free wifi, and a men's and women's sleeping area (bunks beds and setup similar to beds in basic training). The staff was very welcoming and friendly. AND this place is open 24/7!!! Me and the fam stopped here because we had a 4 hour layover. It was great because we were able to eat something, charge all our devices, and relax in the recliners while watching a movie. The facility is funded solely from donations, so no matter how big or small, be sure to leave something in their donation box!! And please don't complain about how something FREE could have been better. Smh. Next time I'm at this airport I'll be hoping for a layover just so I can leave a donation and relax between my flights. read more

THANK YOU. I got stranded on my way back from a wedding and the airline was refusing to pay for hotel because the flight cancelation was due to weather. We arrived around 1 AM and I made my way straight to the center. I cannot emphasize enough how comforting it was to have a place like this that was so organized and able to accept us. There were quite a few people quietly chilling on the comfy recliner chairs as well in the main area. They have separate men and women's bed areas along with what looked like place for person with a small child. They had an optional wake up service and I was able to get back to my flight and back home safe and sound. Note that it is located outside of the gates, right above the check-in area of the airport. read more

I have used many many USO facilities before being that I am retired from the USMC. It's understandable that the place is full and we have to stage outside but if I have been sitting outside with my 6yr old daughter for over and hour and you have seen me sitting there, I'm not a civilian or homeless person just sitting outside a USO for no reason. Obviously I am a veteran who have been stranded because of my flight status had changed or some sort of that matter. Questioning me and IDing me because I Dnt fit your military description was uncalled for. If Dave has an issues working and not being bias of people's Creed, religion, color or believe, he needs to volunteer his time else where. I have always appreciate and support the USO but this morning makes me wonder. Very disappointed! read more

I was so thankful, that my husband, a retired veteran, suggested I find this place to rest in after we found out my flight would be delayed 12 hours at the Minneapolis airport. I was on the phone with my husband telling him about the Delta computer/outages, and he immediately suggested I find this "safe house". I was already exhausted by another delay starting at the Canadian border, and I knew it was going to be a very long journey home to South Carolina. The amazing volunteers who have been operating the centre are truly angels. I can't say enough positive about the gentlemen and ladies who work in the centre. They donate their time to make sure that all the military personnel and their families who come to the centre feel comfortable. From welcoming you as soon as you walk through the doors and asking you how they can help to preparing sandwiches and snacks to bunk assignment and waking you up on time for your flight. It really is a sort of "oasis" for soldiers and military family. There are numerous super cozy lounge chairs, there is a male bunk area and a female bunk area (complete with a little crib/nursery area for a mommy). You just have to make sure to book a bunk and let the front desk know what time you need to wake up at. The beds are pretty comfortable actually. The room temperature was comfortable, and you get a wool blanket, a pillow with clean pillowcase. I found the lights annoying at their dimmest but I guess you have to be able to see your way out of the room too. There is a mini cafeteria area where the volunteers prepare basic eats: grill cheese, hot dogs, ham and cheese, Itchybansoup (which I learned are called Ramen noodles in the US!), PB&J sandwich... Everything is free of charge thanks to donations by retirees and other supporters of this program. There are a variety of bevvys like pop, coffee, tea and water. Snacks like chips, cookies, nuts and pastries are offered too. There is access to Wi-Fi, which was iffy, so I couldn't really watch my Netflix on my own iPhone. The iPads that are offered give limited access to Internet searches and do not have Netflix apps installed. The big screen TV in the main lounge area had the Olympics going, and I'm going to assume that it would be on whatever channel the majority would prefer to watch. There is one common/Uni restroom. It was fairly clean but I noticed that not everybody washes their hands. (I noticed this because I was sitting immediately outside the door, and you couldn't hear the water taps running afterwards! Ewwww!) Also the shower was not in operation/out of service. Overall, everyone who used this service and this area were all very quiet, respectful. The atmosphere was calm and reassuring. It was a very nice place to relax. I think it would've been cool to have had the iPads that are set up or connected to a better Wi-Fi connection. And maybe fresh fruits or veggies would've been nice too. Otherwise, this was an absolutely invaluable and stellar set up! read more

I'm Active Duty military and once was stranded in Minneapolis in 2003 because of a large storm on the East Coast. The Armed Forces Service Center was a God send. They provided me a warm bed, snacks and even woke me up for my flight FREE OF CHARGE! My husband and I had a VERY long and overnight layover. We came into to the center and were warmly welcomed. We went and explored for a few hours after dropping off our bags and were given some tips on navigating. When we arrived back we were once again warmly welcomed and given a place to sleep. When we woke up we were offered breakfast. We had a wonderful experience here. I highly recommend and would use again if we fly back through. Traveling with a teething baby is no fun, but with an extended layover a place to nap becomes even more important. From the second we entered the USO, the staff were so helpful and giving and went the extra mile to get ice for our baby's gums. Great facilities, big comfy chairs, great selection of food and amenities May be smaller than other locations but no less wonderful! Also it's outside of security but they can get you in the employee security line with your ID to speed up getting in. Definitely worth stopping in! read more

5 stars because it's a place where soldiers can go and rest and eat something for free. It even has sleeping quarters a few bunk beds, pretty awesome . Like 10 recliners very cozy. Staff working here are awesome and super friendly. Your a soldier / retiree or spouse with your Mil I.D come by this place 3rd floor. read more
