I spent six nights at this Fairfield Inn and Suites. It's in Mendota Heights, which is next door to Eagan where I typically stay. I went with affordability. It was cheaper staying here than at the Four Points in Bloomington. The change was great. I had no problem finding this place. I parked and hauled everything into the hotel. Checking in was a breeze. I had the best woman at the front desk. She found my reservation, got my credit card and photo ID, and gave me two room card keys and a parking permit. I had a question for her about printing a waiver to see the Minnesota Wild practice. I got it in a PDF while I was in flight. I asked her if there was a printer that I could use. She was great letting me know that the business centre around the corner had one. Otherwise, if I had problems printing, she'd print it herself. Perfect! I printed out two waiver forms. I was set! I went back to my rental vehicle to hang the parking pass on the rearview mirror. Done! I thanked the woman and hauled my goods up to the third floor. My room was in front of the elevators, next to the ice machine. Convenient. Not as loud as I thought. It was more the folks standing around in the hallway, talking loudly, who were annoying. I liked my room. I asked for cleaning, but I ended up working and hibernating in it. I never needed it. I had a mini suite. There was a living room with a TV, small couch, and a chair. It was great unwinding in the evening or having a meal in this area. The best part of this room was the microwave and fridge. I used them often. I heated up food when there was a blizzard. It worked well. The fridge housed 24 cans of pop, food, and fruit at one point. It kept everything cold. The washroom was clean. I liked the shower pressure. The shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel lasted my entire stay. The counter area was generous to house all my toiletries and electric toothbrush. I had a king bed. It was comfortable and firm for my back. The pillows were perfect. They supported my head nicely. There was another TV in the bedroom. The problem was a delay between what folks were saying and their mouth movements. I ended up not watching TV there, opting for the living room's TV. The TV in the bedroom also had random names of guests on the welcome screen. Instead of welcoming me, it welcomed other folks. Weird. It is an older room. It meant that I had to be creative with charging my various devices. The alarm clock had a couple of USB ports, which helped. I plugged my laptop charger into the socket behind my nightstand. The wall socket chargers by the garbage bins did not work. It was a bummer. Most of my charging happened next to the TV in the living room. I pulled out my USB hub and a charger with three USB ports to charge my phone and watch. This setup also powered my mini humidifier. I enjoyed having breakfast for most days, except the weekend where I ended up sleeping in and missing everything. Oops! I loved that I could get fresh fruit and oat beverage. The hot breakfasts were excellent. I liked everything from mini omelettes, to bacon and sausage patties. It was nice having a leisurely breakfast in the dining area before I headed back upstairs to work remotely during weekdays. My biggest beef was parking. Paying $3 a night wasn't bad. It was trying to find a parking spot that was a pain. If you are not back at the hotel by 5 pm, you are not going to find a free parking spot at this hotel. I went out for a couple of Wild hockey games. I got back to the hotel at roughly 9 pm and midnight. I couldn't find a parking spot. The combination of March break, hockey and basketball tournaments, and folks hibernating at the hotel made parking horrible. I ended up parking half the time at the Courtyard hotel next door. Walking from the back of Courtyard's parking lot to Fairfield's main entrance at the start of a blizzard was not fun. I looked like a snow woman in white when I walked into the lobby area. I did find parking when I ran errands during my lunch hour on my last full day at this hotel. At 5 pm, I walked to my car to fetch some items that I forgot to bring back to the room. There wasn't an available parking spot. I'd love to return to this hotel, as I slept well and it was comfortable. The rooms were made clean each day with fresh towels and the beds made too. My one hang up about this place was the small refrigerator, it has just 2 settings. It is either set to completely freeze the entire contents in it or totally thaw it out. I could not find a middle ground during my stay. I probably should have asked someone? I'm certain that the front desk crew can handle anything including a lobby full of people checking in at the same time. Good people for sure. This is will be my spot to stay when I get back up this way for sure.

For this reason, the project manager for our work trip had to book this dump because it was all she could afford to put down, thanks to our nonprofit paychecks. We knew it would be kind of a dump from looking at the website ("amenities" listed included "lit parking lot" and "dial phone"), but wow, we didn't know what awaited us. First of all, the place is located right on (and I mean RIGHT ON) the metro tracks, which makes it impossible to approach from any but one direction. We arrived around midnight and had to drive half a mile out of the way to make a U-turn to get back to the motel. Upon entry, we noted that the clerk was behind bulletproof glass (always a great sign) and that the rules posted on said glass specified "No Prostitution" (also always a good sign). We got our keys and trudged up the shaky, bad-smelling, ugly carpet-covered stairway to our rooms, ready to collapse. Because there were three of us, two female coworkers and myself -the lone guy - we'd booked two rooms: a single queen bed for me, two twin beds for them. We open the door to find that both rooms are single bed rooms. So back down the stairs we go, explaining to the clerk that there'd been a mistake and that my coworkers wanted a room with two beds. Considering that there were all of 3 cars in the parking lot, including ours and, presumably, his, we didn't think this would be a problem. But the clerk got a scary look in his eye and said, angrily, "I upgraded you to a king bed for FREE. That bed is big enough for ten people!" - he flat-out refused to change them to a room with two beds! Too tired to argue with this asshole, we go back upstairs to hit the sack. Before bed I wanted to plug my phone in, so I unplugged the charming Dallas Cowboys alarm clock covered in South Park stickers provided by the motel and tried to plug in my phone, but the outlets were so shitty that the plug kept falling right out of the socket. I had to rig my shoes up in a pile to keep the plug from tilting and falling out. Exhausted, I laid my head down on a way too thick to be comfortable pillow, too tired to notice until the next morning that it was smeared in someone's mascara, and pulled the horrible cheap, spongy polyester blanket over me. Alas, sleep was to be fleeting, because the metro train whizzed by the window regularly through the night and early morning. The next morning my coworkers had slept very little thanks to having to share a bed, listen to the metro train go by, AND sleep on their pillows, which, in opposition to mine, were rock hard and flatter than pizza boxes (and also smeared with someone else's makeup). We resolved to ask the daytime clerk to change their room again, but our business hosts took us out to dinner, and by the time we got back, Crazy-Eyed Asshole had resumed his post. We went back up to our rooms and found that our linens had been replaced and belongings seemed to have been riffled through - no "Do Not Disturb" sign was provided, naturally. Having to just laugh at it all at this point, we entertained ourselves by comparing the grossness of our respective rooms: theirs had discarded contact lenses on the floor of the bathroom, mine had someone else's toenail clippings next to the bed, mysterious stains on the lamp shade, and duct tape repairs to a door. All of our linens, towels and bedding, had some sort of makeup or other stains. All of us had stayed in some pretty terrible places - one used to work for Greenpeace and stay in all kinds of hovels in underdeveloped countries, one toured with a punk band and crashed in squats, vehicles, and all manner of places, and I lived out of a car and cheap motels at a point in my youth, so it's not like we are squeamish - but we all thought this place was a real dump. Pros: no bedbugs that we could ascertain, free (very poor) WiFi and limited cable TV as offered by every other motel in the country, plus a roof and walls. Cons: everything, literally everything, else. In summary, as the previous reviewer noted, a fine place to take a prostitute if you feel like breaking the no prostitution rule. Not a fine place to stay if you have any other option at all for housing. There are plenty of cheap, shitty motels by the airport that at the very least have franchise standards, like Motel 6. Stay there instead!

If you arriving after front desk hours, I recommend you contacting the front desk. The front desk will advise you on how you can pick up keys via the lock boxes. Manager had a similar demeanor as the lady the night before when I told her about the vermin infestation she said they set mouse traps to control them. Neither of them apologized for the inconvenience. I left the hotel when 2 other classmates had mice in their rooms and when one of them told the front, they laughed at her for being afraid of it since she was on the bed panicked when she called.

I took advantage of the SPAC- Saint Paul Athletic Club facilities while I was there- Sauna, Steam room, and pool. Sad they didn't have a hot tub, but I made due. This is a hotel that you can go to and be very low key. They don't have a restaurant on site but their continental breakfast is a great deal. Everything was fresh. I didn't want a generic hotel room so the New Victorian Mansion allowed me to have comfort as if I was in my own home. Some of my favorite highlights include: wrap around front porch, view of the Cathedral, large bathroom with a nautical theme, breakfast in the dining room and overall peacefulness and serenity of the space. Upon arrival, there is a free parking lot wrapped around the building and a main entry (you'll ring the doorbell) to get access to your room key pad number and front door code. Depending on what wing and room you stay in, you will travel either inside or out and have the option for both if you stay in the penthouse. The mansion is separated by two sections and anyone staying in the penthouse is on an opposite wing of the building. There is no elevator in the penthouse and it's clearly advertised online so you'll know what to expect in advance without any surprises. The penthouse is technically meant for large group gatherings as there is only shared 1 bathroom. Contrary, I saw others in the penthouse when I was there and we never overlapped on bathroom use. I enjoy the New Victorian because you can customize how you want to stay whether that is luxurious or a more modern dorm style. No matter what you choose, the common shared spaces in each wing are adorable being it's all a mansion. Even the penthouse kitchen was just enough with every accommodation possible: Nespresso machine, coffee cups, wine glasses, blender, fridge, pots, pans, etc. While I only stayed one night and had to depart early, I couldn't fully enjoy the breakfast as I was in rush mode to get married. Contrary, the staff accommodated a slightly early meal for me which was very thoughtful. Rating this a 4 as there is some generic wear and tear, missing paint, carpet stains, and cleaning supplies and cords in the open spaces. With some paint, hiding of tools, carpet stain remover, small porch sweeping with added flowers, this would get a 5 star. My understanding is that there are new owners so perhaps repairs are all in the works after being handed off? Don't be fooled: the place is clean but it looks more dirty due to the slight repairs that need to be done to keep the upscale vibe going.
