Twelfth Street in New West is not usually on my radar for walking and window shopping, but it's got…read moresome pretty cool stuff if you care to look. Such as a bright orange Eames reproduction chair - hey, what is this place? It's the Banana Lab, a hidden treasure trove of mid-century modern furniture and little design-y things. Hidden in plain sight, really, as it's just across the street from a Yelper fave, Big Star Sandwich. Frankly, I'm heartened there's now another MCM-focused vintage store in town! Packed into the Lab's small space is a number of nifty teak sideboards, record cabinets, chairs and other Danish modern furnishings and housewares for my soon-to-be groovier living room. Prices compare favourably to the *other* MCM store, and the proprietors here seem really nice and friendly and enthusiastic about their wares.

There's plenty of mid century furniture to choose from and upon inspection of some of their refinished items, they do an incredible job. Like with vintage and hard wood furnitures, some of the pieces are not cheap but they're unique and will last a long time. The other plus to this store is their kitschy (and sometimes original) art pieces and tchotchkes. I prefer this place to the shop in the Quay so I'll most likely come back as a few items tweaked my fancy (especially the sunburst table) and I'll be sure to let people know about this place.

Urban Treasures definitely has some of these gems among its merchandise. For example, a line of glass chip-and-dip bowls atop a cabinet caught my eye, so striking, yet practical with the dip bowl that hangs on the rim of the chip bowl. When I expressed my admiration for them, the gentleman minding the store confirmed that he collected these and other retro serving dishes. Upstairs I found the exact set of condiment dishes that my Mom has been serving sauces with fondue for years (we're so 70s, my family), as well as a wondrous coffee set with coordinating tray, and those dishes with multiple wells, perfect for setting out an array of peanuts and little crackers. There were some nice big ticket items as well, including a lovely red corner cabinet on the landing, a red chair-and-ottoman set, and a surprisingly comfy brown loveseat. I practically drooled on a Danish teak dining set. Oh yes, and some artworks that would look right at home in the old Brady den, or hanging over the tiki bar of my dreams.

Looking at some of the furniture, we found several pieces of retro furniture we liked, but they were damaged. The chair I liked, in particular, had a cracked leg and water damage, and was up for an outrageous price. I had heard a man commenting on fake antiques, but I don't know, as I'm not an antique aficionado. When I tried to ask about the damage on the chair, the man tending the store was excessively rude, and treated me like I didn't know what I was talking about. I would not suggest this store to anyone, at least until they get a friendly face to tend the place.
