My point is I hear a lot of non Carlsbad kids, (grads and current students) state "I hate my school", for a variety of reasons. I have NEVER heard 1 kid, during my time as a student or during the 9 years I was the AD, teacher and Head Baseball Coach, say that about Carlsbad. Not one! I'm not saying those kids aren't out there but all things considered, CHS is a great school. Unless maybe you are a female? I have heard from some students there are a lot of "Mean Girls" there who pick on girls who don't look the CHS way. I don't really know anything about that since I didn't have to concern myself with all that. My focus as a student was being friendly to all the ladies! Besides that, you've got waves just a mile or 2 from a gorgeous campus that was completely remodeled in 2011 (I was there). This is why you have the Nation's top competition Surf Team in addition to a premier athletic program and Californias top rated student fan section. Academics are top notch as well as graduates typically are accepted to the nations premier universities. They have a robust AP program as well. The one area that, for me, is a slight "knock" is the student body demographics which is quite homogenous. Maybe that is a plus win in your book? maybe not...regardless of race/ethnicity, the socioeconomic status of 80% of the families, is high many, quite high!

The student body is segregated between the majority of whites and hispanics, interacting within their own friend groups. Lack of diversity in the student body. I had a mentor teacher Marissa Considine who was the worst mentor. She never had a student teacher before and wanted to abuse my free labor to her advantage, not contributing to my growth. She affected me psychologically, emotionally, and gave up on me. She wasn't a significant teacher gearing her students toward a mature development. I don't find this school to be the best choice to value education. The good things about this school is extracurriculars, especially sports.

She didn't follow the CDE requirements for IS at all and used her husband's position as assistant principal to protect her position. Furthermore the interactive learning was far from interactive or synchronous! Instead my child watched boring videos from out of state teachers with no way to connect with anyone! I don't know about the other teachers just this teacher and I can't believe she gets paid to waste my child's time with a joke of an education. Also take what is written her as a long forgetten memory, beyond the statute of limitations. Don't worry most of the staff from back then are dead of retired. I was a terror to this school and it's faculty. Not only was a honor student, athlete and musician, but unlike the rest of those geeks I would ditch, do drugs, mouth off, not necessarily vandalize persay, but deface things and yeah just terrorize people. Fights, suspensions. Basically a Jekyll and Hyde of sorts in that my constant criticism was a waste of talent. Some things I remember was the sports programs of track, basketball, flag football (co-ed). A lot of firsts happened for me here. Most of which I can't publicly talk about (legally), but it was a good school because of the teachers. They cared more about me that I did. I remember eating a lot of pizza and cornuts while I was here. Puberty is rough for everyone too, so being the last full middle school class was nice(top of the class in elementary to middle of the road in middle school), unlike the class below us who went form a year from the top to being bottom rung the next year, never being the kings of the castle until final year in HS. I actually liked the aging campus because it had a full track, sort of sparwling with various levels instead of the track home flatness I'd been used to. It felt like college for a 12 year old. Anyhow I had great times, great memories and I learned a lot from here. I recommend going here from 1995-1997, probably way better than now.

My daughter has crutches and I parked my car by the front office curb to help her. A lady in a hat came over and told me I can't park there, despite there being a row of cars parked right behind me. She said "you can't block the ramp" to which I replied what ramp? There was none, just the same curb everyone was parked at. She told me just move, and pointed to parking spaces on the opposite side of the parking lot. I explained I'm helping my daughter who's injured and will just take a couple minutes. She said park over there and move when she's out. Another security person said "oh yeah, she's like that" when I mentioned the encounter. The other employee was a man who yelled at me when trying to leave the large south parking lot. I merely followed the people in front of me and he started yelling at me "what the hell are you doing!!?" I asked him what's wrong, I'm just following the flow of traffic, sorry I'm just picking up my kid. He apologized, seeming to realize he overreacted. Apparently they want you to circle all the way around the entire parking lot even if no other cars are there. I understand, at least this time he explained it was just an unusual policy, not my fault. Can't wait for my daughter to graduate, I went to Carlsbad high school and this place sounds like a nightmare in comparison. The math teacher and others are troubled individuals with egos and power trips, untouchable due to tenure, what I hear from other parent and students. Only people who were polite were the front office staff, they had better social skills. Hopefully someone speaks to the parking staff.

Ultimately, we were referred to Carlsbad Country Day School by an acquaintance--and we are so grateful we followed that recommendation. From the moment we toured the school, we were impressed. The staff is incredibly warm and welcoming, the campus is clean and beautiful, and the overall atmosphere is calm, joyful, and thoughtfully run. The curriculum is fantastic--our kids enjoy yoga, sports, reading class, and so much more. The school also provides healthy and delicious meals daily, which has been a huge relief for us as busy parents. Even better? The kids love the food! As for their teachers--Mrs. Gina and Ms. Stephanie are absolutely wonderful. You can tell they truly care about their students and pour so much effort into making each day special. Mrs. Gina creates such a positive and engaging learning environment for our older child, and Ms. Stephanie brings so much warmth, fun, and care to our younger child's classroom. We feel so lucky they have these amazing educators in their lives. Our kids are genuinely excited to go to school each day. One of them won't even say goodbye at drop-off, and at pickup, it's like pulling teeth to get them to leave--honestly, we take that as a great sign! The outdoor space is spacious and full of activities to keep them busy and happy. The school also hosts adorable events throughout the year--like a mother/son dance, a Christmas party, and more--which really make families feel connected. They also offer professional school photos twice a year, and the sibling pictures are to die for--some of the cutest we've ever had taken. We truly feel like we won the lottery finding Carlsbad Country Day School. Our only wish is that they went through elementary school too!

When I first went there to sign my boys up, the demeanor of the children were very mellow. A very large number of them are very nice. Regarding how they dress, well, they're kids who can dress themselves 4-12th grade to be exact. They have to make their own decisions on some things at some point in their lives. We won't agree with them but they have to start somewhere (in my opinion). I would suggest the person from Carlsbad (Crystal) that had an issue with how the children looked, should stick to Carlsbad where she's more comfortable with how children look in a more affluent neighborhood. The receptionist has her moments but if it bothers you that much the director is very approachable. However regarding the students and faculty, for those who want their children to learn in a diverse environment with children that represents the US and the world, give it a try. I give it only 4 stars because their online educational software is extremely frustrating. On your child's end (their school issued laptop) you see the completed work with their score but on the teacher's end they don't see it completed. I was being a little tough on my son until I had him show me and realized that a large number of assignments his teacher said wasn't completed were completed on the days they were assigned. So, if they are still using that system, have your child take screenshots for their own proof if the teacher begins to say they are missing assignments but your child is adamant they completed them - double check just in case.
