Where do I start...Hmmm, my 4 years at good ol' CHS...well before I jump in on that, let me first say that I have been a high school teacher and administrator in north SD County for 27 years, 9 of which were actually at Carlsbad. My point is I hear a lot of non Carlsbad kids, (grads and current students) state "I hate my school", for a variety of reasons. I have NEVER heard 1 kid, during my time as a student or during the 9 years I was the AD, teacher and Head Baseball Coach, say that about Carlsbad. Not one! I'm not saying those kids aren't out there but all things considered, CHS is a great school. Unless maybe you are a female? I have heard from some students there are a lot of "Mean Girls" there who pick on girls who don't look the CHS way. I don't really know anything about that since I didn't have to concern myself with all that. My focus as a student was being friendly to all the ladies! Besides that, you've got waves just a mile or 2 from a gorgeous campus that was completely remodeled in 2011 (I was there). This is why you have the Nation's top competition Surf Team in addition to a premier athletic program and Californias top rated student fan section. Academics are top notch as well as graduates typically are accepted to the nations premier universities. They have a robust AP program as well. The one area that, for me, is a slight "knock" is the student body demographics which is quite homogenous. Maybe that is a plus win in your book? maybe not...regardless of race/ethnicity, the socioeconomic status of 80% of the families, is high many, quite high! read more

Many of these kids do not want to learn. The party culture and misbehaviors affect the school to not value education. The student body is segregated between the majority of whites and hispanics, interacting within their own friend groups. Lack of diversity in the student body. I had a mentor teacher Marissa Considine who was the worst mentor. She never had a student teacher before and wanted to abuse my free labor to her advantage, not contributing to my growth. She affected me psychologically, emotionally, and gave up on me. She wasn't a significant teacher gearing her students toward a mature development. I don't find this school to be the best choice to value education. The good things about this school is extracurriculars, especially sports. read more

I do not think Carlsbad High School is a vape school like SDA and LCC, The school is located close to San Marcos. Carlsbad High School feels like a Cal Poly College on top of a mountain. read more

Their student section was whipping guests with pompoms from other schools and the staff was rude. The"Soft" pretzel was HARD. They false advertise their school on social media. They're racist to African American. Sour patches were stale and the Airheads took 5 seconds too long to finish one. There was no security guards. There was students vaping. I'm disappointed and astonished by this school. I've only heard amazing things but tonight I was proven wrong. Do better Lancers. read more

I have a son who attends Carlsbad High School and as I do like Carlsbad High School, this review to directed towards the counseling department. Specifically, Mrs. Penrod. She was inviting, uplifting and made my child feel comfortable and listened to. She showed genuine interest in his education and journey through his high school AND beyond. She was informative and spoke directly to him. I very much enjoyed the meeting we had with her and am so happy to know my child and the other students have her to talk to. read more

First y'all! This was inspired by Ruggy and his review of Fallbrook High School. Carlsbad High was ( guessing still is) a mixture of every demographic and social level imaginable. Surfers, stoners, jocks, cholos, geeks, goths, etc...... all in one school. We were one of the few campuses that let you leave at lunch time. You could of made many high school movies with the stuff I saw/heard. I would be an extra though cause I was a lame-o. Wasn't thrilled when I was there, but looking back, it was the best place to go to high school. Oh and home of the Carlsbad Gap. One of the most famous skate spots in California..ney...the world. I didn't attend CHS, but had two kids that did and they've forged lifelong friendships and had some great experiences. What I liked about it was that the school was big enough to offer so much in the way of classes, extracurricular activities and clubs, so there's enrichment on a variety of levels. From a parent standpoint, my kids had different interests, yet I found that across the board: sports, clubs and academics, parents and the community cared enough to be involved and supportive in whatever way they could. This speaks volumes to me!! Let's be real and accept that not all students, teachers, coaches and parents are going to be happy shiny people everyday. We all have our bad days. I had a bad experience with one or two at the school, although in retrospect, it wasn't because they didn't care. For a top quality public education, I'll stand in line, put up with the few outliers and pick up where I need to. But, on the other hand, each kid is different so you gotta listen and support them too. I highly recommend this school. read more

I attended CHS from 2001 to 2005. I'm pretty sure much has changed since so much in Carlsbad has changed since the early 2000's! I wasn't one of the "popular kids" or one of the rich kids, but I was involved in the arts and active in the theater program. AND I was definately not on any sports teams. It's rather ironic because a good majority of the football players from my time at CHS are now "famous". It's one of the better high schools, but it's still High School. read more

I went to Carlsbad High School when I was in 9th grade during the 2011-12 school year but transferred to another school after. I don't know if I am complaining or am true, here it goes: While a student here, I had to put up with the extremely loud noises of construction (they were building new academic buildings while tearing down the original buildings from the 1950's). A majority of the students do not want to be here, and it is no wonder why a lot of students end up complaining and are unhappy. The rich kids are really annoying, and usually flaunt about their parties over the weekend getting drunk/smoking weed and are extremely spoiled with their BMW's given to them as a gift from daddy. There are also smart and dedicated students here, but they're pretty hard to approach because, well, they're busy. As a result of the negative atmosphere, students have a hard time giving their teachers respect: for instance, I didn't learn much in my English 1 Class and most of the time spent was disciplining immature children to do their homework and pay attention instead of playing with their phones; no wonder the teacher was so frustrated and retired early. As a result, there isn't a lot of support from the teachers and parents. Skateboarding and Surfing are a huge part of the Carlsbad High culture, and students who do either sport hate each other solely for the competition of getting hot girls who are either in cheer-leading or volleyball (there are a lot of attractive girls at C'bad). And the Carlsbad Gap was a huge popular-culture icon in Carlsbad for skateboarders, until they tore it down due to the aging buildings. But in fair reality, like La Costa Canyon or any High School in the US, Carlsbad High School puts tremendous emphasis on the football team while putting far less on the other sports. Oh yeah, and another note: PARKING SUCKS! Unless you arrive at 7 or earlier in the morning, you won't find a parking spot nearby and you will be late for class. However, I thought my Geometry teacher was amazing and one of the best teachers I ever had, so I gave an additional star for that. The verdict is, unless you are wealthy, able to do well at school, and are into sports, you won't like it here. read more

Laura Ogan is the attendance prison warden at Carlsbad High who interrogates parents by calling them and harassing them every time she thinks a student or parent has committed a serious crime by not showing up even when we have called excusing our child. The AP exam was happening this time at 11:30am in Carmel Valley, she called me 2 days later accusing me over and over 4 times of calling my child in absent for personal reasons because they didn't go to 7:30am class then continues to harass me, berate me and talk over me. This was the most recent time. I told her to stop putting words in my mouth and go and listen to the recording, she refused saying it had been deleted already. How convenient for her. She is consistently is rude, condescending and a bully to students and many other parents, not just me. I refuse to be talked to by her, after I told her I didn't like the way she was talking to me, she hung up on me. Whoever wrote up a nice review of her MUST be her friend, because there is NO WAY IN THE WORLD she has EVER been nice to anyone there. Other than her and Ms Michelle Alfonso the bully math teacher, CHS is a pretty good school. They just need to be fired! I will be filing a formal complaint with the school district. read more

Laura Ogan is incredible and much more than an attendance clerk; I am just a mom who finally introduced myself to her today, after she again helped my son and I turn a rough morning into a learning experience where we felt genuinely supported and empowered. Laura has helped me on several occasions over the years and every time I needed her help, it was because I was ill prepared and made a mistake. Every time she was professional, kind, patient and took the time to teach us what we needed to know, without making me or my son feel small. Laura is a PowerHouse of knowledge and shhumbly helps annoying parents like me all day long. Carlsbad High's staff and student body are fortunate to have Laura and I will continue to sing her praises! Laura thank you for helping us this morning and for taking the time to relate to me personally and print off the entire block schedule that I was so confused by. You are APPRECIATED! read more

Sons finishing up his freshman year. So far, so good. He's loved his classes and the JV baseball team. The only issue we've had is the woman at the attendance desk. If you leave a messsage? No problem. But if she answers? She is nasty. I had to call one morning to make sure he got a pass to leave for an orthodontist appt. I had never done it before and just asked if I was following procedure correctly. She openly mocked me. I'm not sure of her name, but She needs a serious attitude adjustment. read more

I lived in the village for two years and was excited for my daughter to start her 10th grade year here.. Until Mrs. Deluca (I may be spelling that incorrect.) I was taken back when we walked into registration and there she was in her jean ugg boots and a tee shirt. Then to top off her unprofessional appearance she became to speak. First things out of her mouth was bad mouthing the school my daughter came from. Them on to proof of residence, so I have my drivers license and a bill. This isn't good enough for mrs Deluca where she explains to us that carlsbad is very strict on zoning because they have to keep the number of free lunches down to make sure to receive a certain type of funding and people who can't afford carlsbad would get on the free lunch program and change there funding .. I'm appealed by what's she is telling us and then I begin to wonder if she thinks because we are a blended family that we are poor ?? I can tell you I'm sure my salary is twice mrs Deluca's. She makes me bring my rental agreement, another bill and my car registration!!! After all that my AP student was enrolled ! No because we moved 6 miles up the road carlsbad Denys my daughter to return to her high school!! Deluca is awful and this schools is nothing to brag about !!! Can't say high school was the easiest of times for me but this campus is amazing- it's completely changed and been renovated since I was there. Almost all of the teachers are pretty spectacular. A few that truly stood out: Señor Ric, Mrs.Feaster, Mr.Feaster, Mr. Mulenburg (excuse the spellings if they are incorrect), Mrs. lambert, Mr.Feiburg, Mrs.Jones, Mr.Heath, Coach Tomkinson (both of them) and of course, Tony. Very nice school! Well....more than half of it is so far! (still under construction) They really should stagger the morning schedule somehow, because the traffic to drop off your kid in the morning is hellacious! I have to get my daughter to school at least 30 minutes early, or she would be tardy everyday! Other than that...the admin staff and counselors are awesome! read more

What kind of a school is it when summer school for kids who get an F don't have to pay and kids with A's that want to get ahead a class during the summer have to pay $500? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Kids taking up teachers and other students time twice should have to pay. I called and asked Carlsbad High School why that was, and their response was, of course kids with F's don't have to pay! No wonder the school system is so messed up!! read more

One lady in particular that answers the phone at the school's office is setting a horrible example for the school. Her name is Trish Rivier. She is extremely rude and treats your call as if it is not important and your wasting her time. She will cut you off and say "I have other calls waiting hurry up". There are plenty of people that would love to do her job and get paid alot so she should lighten up. Every single time I have called she has not once been friendly. She should find another profession. read more

Can I give less than a star?? My family & extended family has been in Carlsbad since before CHS was around. All of my aunts, cousins & extended family are all grads. I am actually, now, completely embarrassed to even claim to be an alum. The teachers sucked in the `80's and `90's... I had the same teachers my dad did... they were AWFUL!!! Now I have experience with a child there... OMFG. Due to cut backs and the fact that these people who chose to be teachers (to get off at 2:30 in the afternoon) neglect the kids who need help. Even when a new, young, motivated counselor tries to help struggling incoming students (because there were many) with a special new program & then after 2 weeks gets frusterated & quits on them....that's got to mean that something is wrong. I'm hoping that this jacked up school disctrict is just a reflection of a state-wide problem.... but I'm not holding my breath. I haven't seen a teacher, since the elementary school level, that I believe gives a shit. Of the people I know personally, there are quite a few that just want to do the minimum... which is sad. They should have chose a different job. read more
