Panorama of the sun setting from the top of Mauna Kea over the telescopes.
    Maricar A.

I went on their Mauna Kea tour which was excellent. They keep the prices really competitive. We went with Edan and he was so knowledgeable about star systems. He used this laser pointer that identified all the major constellations. He gave us a really good tip, he said we lucked out because we went close to the new moon. The closer you are to the new moon the darker the sky is and the more stars you will see. The closer you are to a full moon, then the stars get washed out by the light of the full moon and it's harder to see the stars. The star gazing actually happens at the visitor center because the lower altitude allows your eyes to work better. This company or the tour guide has no control over whether you'll see the stars because they can't control the clouds or the moon any more than you can. So, if you really need to see the stars, then check the day's weather for yourself. In any case, that's just one part of the tour. There are the telescopes, the breath-taking view of the sunset above the clouds, the telescopes, and the nature preserve itself. I was just so floored on how knowledgeable Edan was about the stars and constellations. He pointed them out with a laser pointer like a professor. I have never seen the big dipper on my own but after he pointed them out with the laser pointer, it looked so obvious. This tour is a must-do and this is a great company to go with. They are thoughtful, communicative, and they keep prices competitive. Lastly, you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to access Mauna Kea after the visitor center because the road past the visitor center isn't paved, and in some cases steep. This tour company picked me me up from my hotel at Grand Naniloa in a 4 wheel drive vehicle. From pick up to drop off the tour lasted from about 3:30 pm to about 9:00 pm.

Helpful, Friendly staff. Clean facility. Good Price. I stayed 4 nights in the private dorm room and did the Mauna Kea Tour through them.

We stayed in a queen room with a private bath, fridge and coffee in room, a little dining table in the room plus a little dining table outside sliding doors. The bed and sheets were beautiful, clean and very tastefully designed. There was also a shared kitchen that was very clean and well stocked with pots pans utensils dishes stove microwave magic bullet, seating at counter, next to a spacious area for a living room. Everything is relatively updated and a very relaxed island vibe. On the grounds are several common rooms for tv watching, dining, and a smoking lounge. All are open air meaning they have roof and a couple walls but one or more walls are left open (missing). As with many structures on the big island walls are optional. (Even the Airport has no walls.) We took a tour up Mauna Loa on August 15 to see the observatories at the top. Our guide Donna told us about each observatory as well as all the news and history of the area. We drove up in a Jeep and she had warm coats and cocoa for us. (We didn't expect that and brought our own cold weather gear). The car was perfectly clean and the ride was nice. The sunset was spectacular above the clouds. After it became dark, Donna gave a star show demonstration pointing out all the constellations. Better and more knowledgeable than the one for the visitors center.

Keep in mind there is no snorkeling on this excursion and the area around the Hilton is not safe or appropriate for snorkeling. I am writing the review solely on the lava field excursion part. My wife was very dissapointed that there was no snorkeling as we purchased new snorkeling equipment. Roxy was our tour guide and was probably the most knowledgeable and professional tour guide we have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Roxy was knowledgeable in the history of volcanoes on Hilo and elsewhere, horticulture, bird species, animals, Hawaiian culture, tourist attractions, history of the Hawaiian Islands, tribes and Capt. Cook, beaches, teachings, burial practices and so much more. Roxy told stories of the early days in Hawaii and how it evolved. Also as a noted her driving and safety practices were impeccable. If you are planning to come to Hilo you must make it a point to reach out to Roxy. We spent approximately 8 hours on the tour and it was so enriching although the lack of snorkeling was a dissapointment . Highly recommended Mahalo

We went on the Ahiu guided lava tour about a month ago during a trip to the big island. We knew…read morethat the active lava areas were not visible from the volcano national park. so we wanted to get up close and personal with the lava. From what we could tell, this was the best, and it didn't disappoint. They take care of all the arrangements on the phone and when you show up they have a backpack, light, snacks, water, gloves, and poncho ready for you. The tour starts at 2 pm, but it's a little drive out to the start of the hike. The guides will help you find a walking stick to help you keep your balance. Now, the hike itself is totally insane, and not for the faint of heart. It's about 3 hours of hiking through the rainforest, where there is ankle deep mud, fallen trees, puddles, and a lot of up/down and switchbacks. I've got to be honest with you, this is a pretty hard hike and not for the faint of heart. We were somewhat ill-prepared, as we only had regular sneakers. I'd definitely recommend real hiking boots. Then it's about another mile on the cooled lava fields to get to an area where the lava is actively coming out. All in all, you arrive at the lava around or just after dusk. The lava itself is one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It is so hot, that once you get within about 10 feet it starts to scorch your face and arms. You can stick your walking stick in the actively flowing lava, and the tip immediately catches on fire! Amazing, just to dip a stick in liquid rock and watch as it cools to a solid. The guide themselves are totally legit. We had 2 guides for a group of about 13, with one leading the way and another bringing up the rear. We spent a fair amount of time talking to one of the guides, Tomas, a native Hawaiian who is pretty much an all around badass. When he isn't guiding tours, hunting boar, surfing, or other stuff with the company, he does mixed martial arts training and fighting. At the time of our tour, he was still undefeated. Big ups to Tomas. The worst part is the hike out. Because you're starting at about 8 pm, and it's another 4 hours of hiking, you don't get back until midnight or so. I can safely say that it was one of the most exhausting experiences I've ever had. Well worth it though. Overall, Ahiu provided us with one of the more amazing moments in my life. I'll always remember it, and I don't say that in many reviews on Yelp. Definitely do it, but bring hiking boots!

We had to email them the reservation they sent us in the first place. Then they told us the hike was about 2 hours when it was more than double that one way. I was totally fine with that, but just be honest about it. I would like to give them less stars just for the way the front office handled the whole thing. The tour was a long hike through a rainy jungle. Then you come up to the lava fields and hike to the spot where the current flows are coming up out of the ground. This tour was an absolute must and I was extremely happy that I did it. We were definitely worn out in the end, but it was all worth it. The guides were extremely friendly and polite. You could ask for anything better. I would have given this five stars if it were not for the front office.
