Big Island Candies has cornered the market on shortbreads and chocolate candies produced in Hilo. I was brought here as part of a bus tour and while I wouldn't have stopped here on my own, I'm glad that we did... as you walk in the door, a greeter offers you a little cup of samples. Today we had shortbread and Mac nut brittle. Both were very tasty. Fresh coffee is also sampled... the Kona coffee was great! This shop has tons of offerings from various kinds of shortbreads to all types of chocolate covered macadamia nuts. The items are packaged nicely and many are perfect for gift giving. There's also a large viewing window where you can see the candies being produced & the atmosphere inside was bustling and efficient. I walked out with four little gift boxes and I'm happy that I have some treats for peeps back home. (All sales are final.) Many buses are brought here, so as someone visiting, it does feel a little forced, but it worked out nevertheless. Plenty of car & bus parking. Mahalo.

I am glad Big Island Candies is not located in Kona. If it was, I would be broke and fat. I am obsessed with the dark chocolate macadamia nut rocky road. I stop here to buy it every time I am in Hilo. I also like the dark chocolate macadamia shortbread cookies. This is a great store to buy gifts. They always have cute seasonal gift boxes with a combination of their sweets. I sometimes get these for friends and flight attendants when I travel back to main land. And everyone always loves them. If you are local or visit the island often, make sure to get a punch card. You get discounts on your purchases when you shop.

Looking for a special gift while visiting Hilo and or you have a sweet tooth this is the best place to explore. Not only will you get to taste some local creations, but some souvenirs, but the large windows inside are perfect viewing spots to see where the magic happens. The parking lot was large which was nice. As you arrive you're greeted with samples. I tried the chocolate dipped potato chips. For me it was a perfect blend of salty and sweet. The front entrance table had a gorgeous centerpiece and each station was color coordinated, labeled and separated for any occasion. The decorate boxes are sure to wow anyone. The staff was so sweet like candy factory they worked. It was a great quick stop on the tourist list.

What a great place. It was a trek from Kona to Hilo but it was well worth it. There was plenty of parking and they had a security guard. We were greeted with a sample and some coffee. The workers were friendly and attentive. The smell of chocolate permeated this place. If you like candy, you'll be like a kid in a toy store. Though pricy, it was well worked it. I can't even begin to articulate what they have so visit their website so you can look through the products If you visit the Big Island, this place is a must.

Beautiful new showroom. Selection enormous and service helpful and friendly. Lots of free samples of cookies, candies and coffee! You can view the process of making the delicious goodies. These beautifully packaged items make great Omiyage (gifts) for friends and family. Highly recommend you visit!

Are you planning on bringing something back home? This is the place to get it. A variety of selection from matcha to almond covered shortbread... This is actually better said with pictures. Upon entering you're greeted with the days sample and a sample cup of coffee. The staff is very friendly and if you spend a certain amount you get a free bad to take your loot home. We always come back when we are in Kona

FOOD: The cookies and chocolates here are soooo good!! When you walk in the door, you are greeted with a smile and a sample of chocolate and cookie. Then you can walk over and get a sample of coffee to wash it down! It was so good! SERVICE: The service here was wonderful! Everyone we encountered was so nice and friendly and greeted us with a smile. DECOR/AMBIANCE: Such great decor and vibes. There are plants around so very naturey (Is that a word?). This store is also huge and so much to go around and see. Definitely recommend to visit if you are in Hilo!

The name of this store says candy- but it's mainly cookies and brownies. Delicious ones at that!!! You can stop here for all your Hawai'i gifts to bring back k home. Shortbread cookies dipped in chocolate. Ice cream. If you time it right , you can watch the assembly line. Looks straight out of an episode of I love Lucy!!

Friendly storefront with free samples on arrival. We received a shortbread cookie and brownie sample plus a sample of coffee. You can see the ladies standing behind the windowed factory area hand dipping the cookies into the chocolate. The store was clean, organized, and decorated nicely for the holidays. I liked how sometimes they showed an open sealed box - so you could actually see what was inside each box. We bought 4 or 5 boxes of treats to share with our friends back home. They give you a punch card and for every $100 spent, you can get $5 off your next order. You need it, because their items are pricey!

Shortbread Assortment

I got there just before closing and I was given several samples and a taste of coffee. Workers were friendly and helpful. I walked out with a box of the cookie assortments with taro, lemon, coffee and shortbread cookies. I also got a macadamia chocolate rice crisp candy box

Yes, each item wrapped individually inside the box, makes it nice because they stay much more fresh and crunchy.

I'm also glad I happened to be a couple blocks away at that time, cause it would've stunk if I'd missed out! They have a whole range of great chocolates, from 55-90 percent that were all great, a fantastic matcha chocolate, great dried fruit chocolates, and one very good, *very* spicy dark chocolate (I loved it enough to buy a bar, but much more so than most pepper chocolates I've had, it does *not* play around.) Definitely also loved that they had samples of basically everything they sell. Also loved, we learned, it was actually the chocolatier himself running the shop when we were there, so all our questions were being answered directly from the source. It also worked out in that they didn't actually *have* any bars of the spicy chocolate out, as he'd just made a new batch and hadn't packaged them yet, so when he learned we were leaving the next day, he pressed one for me right then and there! How's that for great service?

Since it was hot and we were traveling by car, we opted for the cacao nibs and THEY ARE INCREDIBLE. We had them on ice cream paired with molten lava cake and I'm still thinking (drooling) about it. Since my time away, they have beautifully renovated the interior to have a sit-down booth area. I love the abundance of nene decor honoring our state bird, along with high quality chocolates made in Hawaii. The store clerk was very knowledgeable and described how each cultivars of chocolate differ in their taste profiles. We had the horchata 50% milk chocolate bar, and I don't have a picture because we devoured it in one sitting! Overall, Puna Chocolate Co. is an elegant, delightful, and elevated experience that rivals big names like Big Island Candies and Dandelion Chocolates in San Francisco. The espresso was strong, not overwhelmingly bitter, and had a good consistency to it. While sitting at the bar, I noticed that they had a Day Drink menu with a bunch of coffee and chocolate cocktails, including an espresso martini and a cacao old fashioned. For $14 and $13 respectively, these seemed like very reasonable prices. Definitely something I'll check out on my next visit. On the right side of the store is a gift shop, while the left side has a bunch of seating for patrons. I noticed there were a few people here with their laptops out, so I can only assume it's also a good place to work as well. The store seemed pretty quiet, street parking outside was easy, and the staff I interacted with here was friendly. Puna Chocolate Company is a good rest spot to stop by to escape from the busyness of Downtown Hilo.

Crack seed. For us…read morelocals in Hawai'i, these snacks were childhood staples. The crack seed store, a classic place where vibes of nostalgia are generated every time I walk into one. 'Cause I grew-up with li hing mui and arare. There's a small number of locally-owned crack seed shops on the Big Island of Hawai'i and in Hawai'i in general. This is one of them, the "local-style candy store" for an island boy like me. I enter 5-Spice, located in East Hawai'i after the intersection of Kilauea Ave and W Puainako St, heading south. I remember frequenting this business when it used to be at Puainako Town Center. Their popularity over the years gave them the ability to move to a larger space. Now independently located in their own building with ample parking. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Would I be able to control myself, holding onto what's desired without adding anything extra? It's always impossible for me to do so. Everytime. Yummy preserved items in large display jars, others placed in vacuum sealed bags. All priced by-the-ounce. I become curious, wanting to taste it again. I go to my favorites, seeking them first while browsing through the visual display of many others. Cracked seed goodness on one side, bagged candies and sweets on the other. I've seen this all before yet, I stand still with the desire to place it all in my hands. And I sure do, my hands are full. I mail them to the U.S. mainland in care packages, travel to the neighbor-islands as omiyage, and personally enjoy them at work or at home as snacks. They make great gifts for friends and coworkers too. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Let's talk about food, where mouth-watering plates and yummy burgers are prepared. Bentos are packed to-go on the countertop. Offering an extensive menu for a take-out, all made to enjoy outside on picnic tables or elsewhere. Daily specials are available along with catering + platters too. Front service by the team at the counter is pleasant, attentive. Gratitude is always extended for every purchase. Comfortable, courteous, welcoming. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ "Meat Jun Plate" A light egg batter and thinly sliced beef served in an upscale fashion due to care in preparation and quality of flavor. "Honey Chicken Plate" Featuring a crazy yummy sweet and savory glaze, sticky and glossy. This sauce, this recipe creation is glorious. Chicken pieces are tender yet slightly crispy on the exterior. "Bibimbap" Freshly made Korean banchan, thinly sliced seasoned beef over white rice. I pour the gochujang over everything and mix-in the sunny side egg, bringing forward a creamy texture along with heat + depth. Choose the sweet potato salad as your side. "Gravy Burger Combo w/ French Fries" This massive burger patty is filling, satisfying. Charred and smothered in rich brown gravy served with lettuce and mayo. Back before 9/11…read moreever took place, we would stop at George's with our cooler bag and stock up on prepared meats (oxtail being my favorite) and head back to Oahu. Once 9/11 occurred it made stopping at George's a little more effort so that we could get frozen meat back home without ice. However, George's came up with their absolutely delicious thin beef jerkies and that has been a must buy ever since!! And now, they have the best snacks and energy bars! I've not been able to go lately but a friend of mine was gracious enough to offer to purchase for me and bring it back to me!! I feel ever so lucky to have bags of beef jerky and energy bars in my hands!! Hoping to get to George's myself soon!!

Have been a fan of crispy beef jerky since the first time I had it on Oahu a few years ago…read more George's Meat Market, you have spoiled me for all other brands. If George's isn't the oldest, original crispy beef jerky, it's certainly one of them. Reading reviews dating back since 2010 referencing their crispy beef chips, they have had many years to perfect their product. And it's true, once you try George's crispy jerky... paper thin, crispy like a chip, deliciously flavored... you won't want any other! There are one or two labels I do enjoy from Oahu still, given the choice... I will choose George's! So happy that Stacey, proprietor of George's, mentioned they can ship. Give them a jingle and get your supply now! So far I have limited my consumption to what I can fit in my suitcase. Traveling friends were laughing when they saw half my suitcase filled with George's crispy beef jerky. After making pre-arrangements with Stacey, my small reunion group was able to taste a number of flavors of crispy jerky. Stacey was so nice and accommodating. It's a good thing as, after gathering a bunch of crispy jerky, energy bars, and other snacks we must have spent about $300. And I will continue to send people over to George's for the most delicious treats and meats. I have tried just about all their flavors. My favorites being the spicy chili pepper and shoyu, their bulgogi Korean bbq, and their sweet char siu flavored crispy jerky. Ohh but wait, they also have really delicious energy bars. And if your lucky enough, grab a container of gummie candies which are kicked up with lemon peel bits. Meats, tender and marinated. ...Whatever your craving, get it at Georges!
