This little market on Hwy 54 doesn't look like much form the outside. However, on the inside it's probably the best-stocked Indian market in Durham -- at least that I know of. They have a small selection of produce that's usually of good quality; I've gotten ginger and cilantro there. The focus is on Indian cuisine and they definitely have a good selection. We've bought rice, naan, snacks and some frozen items like samosas and pakoras. I don't cook much Indian cuisine so it's easier for me to get the pre-packaged items. They do have some other international ingredients and also frozen meat in the back freezer. Definitely a little gem of a store. read more

We love Around the World market. My partner is Indian, so we cool Indian food regularly. This market has everything that we need from vegetables to spices to snacks. The staff is very friendly. They recognize us and always ask how we are doing. Additionally, the store is well-stocked and very well organized, which allows for quick and efficient shopping trips. The prices are average compared to other Indian grocery stores. We always buy spices/herbs/etc. from this market, because it is almost always cheaper than buying them at Walmart, Harris Teeter, etc. For example, for the same price that we would buy a small container of sesame seeds at a larger chain grocery store, we get a large jar of them from this store. The also have fresh mithai and samosas, which are always delicious. In the past, they have also had fresh rotis available but only by phone order ahead of time. read more

Holy chole - this place is amazing! Dedicated to items from India and her neighbors, they have every kind of rice imaginable (did you know there was such a thing as flattened rice?) plus hundreds of spices, pickles, curry powders, sauces, mixes, pastes, oils, essences, ghee, bread, yogurt, lentils, beans, prepared meals, frozen entrees, desserts, snacks, and teas as well as utensils, incense, and South Asian beauty/toiletry items. There is also a small produce section with veggies I've never seen before (many of these and more are also available frozen). I stocked up on spices to make chana masala and bought some really nice methi paratha. The prices were just right. It's heaven for Desis and Desi wannabes like me. read more

I walked into Around the World Market and was inspired by ideas. Not only do they have dried goods, spices, oils (who knew almond oil was a thing?), and most anything to stock your kitchen; but they also have produce and a huge supply of frozen items. Produce is seasonal, everything from FRESH curry leaves to mint, limes, green and ripe papaya, fresh baby coconuts, etc. They also have a handful of religious items and imported chocolates (anybody looking for Cadbury chocolates, look no further!) They also have a handful of dairy products, whole milk in a gallon and lots of plain yogurt. It's called "Around the World" but it's essentially an Indian food store. I come here for their prepackaged foods - the parathas and naans close to the register. They also have a frozen vegetarian section around the corner - I like the masala dosas - 4 for $2. For frozen, they are pretty tasty and a good deal. There is even prepackaged vegetarian food in the aisle - it's not frozen and only takes 2 minutes to heat up. The "Swad" brand is my favorite because it's dairy free. There is another frozen section with meat is in a separate freezer in the back - the chicken dishes I've tried are delicious - especially the "Tandoor Chef" chicken curry. They also have assorted snacks, dips, sauces, and teas. You can even purchase a hot chai tea for 50 cents or $1 at the register - nice in the winter . And try the mango creamsicle in the summertime - so good. Staff are friendly, professional and helpful. My only complaint is the store could be bigger! read more

Thank goodness for this place! Long story short, I needed extra fine bulgur. I was dreading the search. I told myself, "I'll go to Kroger, I'll go to Harris Teeter... and if they don't have it, I will have to go all the way to Cary." Also, to add how much I was dreading this, my local Kroger does not even carry MALT VINEGAR (as in the delicious condiment for fish and chips), so I was pretty sure they were not going to have extra fine bulgur! Luckily before I stepped foot in a large chain grocery store, I remembered Around the World Market, as I must have passed it a hundred times. I guess I never went in before, because I didn't know what to expect... turns out it is a pretty awesome Indian grocery store. But the awesome thing about Indian food is that it can cover a lot of different cuisines.... so YES, this story has a happy ending: I found my bulgur! And for quite cheap, too. I would recommend this place if you are looking for anything related to Indian food/cuisine (and maybe even middle eastern food, as I did find my bulgur and see some cous cous). I was really surprised to see how huge it is. There is also a really huge frozen food section. If you like to cook, or just like Indian food, this place is the best. It's very unassuming from the front, But it has the best selection of Middle Eastern spices I've ever seen. They also have an amazing selection of food in the frozen sections, with several types of naan, paneer, frozen dinners and sides. They even have hard-to-find fresh produce, such as curry leaves and hot green peppers. All that would be a very good reason to shop here, but when you add in the fact that everything is very inexpensive it's impossible to beat. read more

I just came back from my first visit to Around the World Market. It will certainly not be my last. They are well-stocked with just about anything you'll need for your Desi meals. What impressed me most of all was the warm welcome and customer service. Everyone I met there was nice. I asked the lady at the cash register a couple of questions about recipes (mainly to start up a conversation) and she had several ideas. She also suggested I try youtube for other recipes and techniques. Then she even suggested that I just write down ingredients of dishes I want to try and bring them by the store, and "anyone will be happy to help you." What more could you ask for? My go to place for almonds, coconut flour, herbs, and spices. Fresh herbs, limes and ginger are cheaper here than the other grocery stores. Sure BJ's has cheaper almonds, but those don't blend into almond butter as well as the Swad almonds this place has. I love browsing all the different veges and spices that aren't carried in other stores. Every trip I try to find something new to experiment with. I only buy ingredients, but some of the prepared frozen and boxed foods do look interesting. My only complaint is some of the items and shelves don't list a price so it's a surprise at the register. I used to live close to this store, and boy do I wish I had gone more often. I now live in North Raleigh, and it is still worth the trip. The spices are a BARGAIN, the staff is friendly, and there is tons of selection packed into a small space. I could spend a long time just looking at all the products. I like the mix of basics (for Indian cooking) as well as a nice selection of prepared food for when I'm in the mood but short on time. I like this location better than the store they have in Cary. It is smaller though. Very easy to get to if you are working in the RTP. Good selection of snacks, chocolates apart from the items you find in most Indian stores. Very clean in here. The manager is a very nice and friendly man.
