Originally a private country estate owned by the Shaw family (whose monograms may be seen dotted around on remaining rustic stone bridges and gateposts) the remaining 250 acres of open parkland - the council transgressed the terms of the bequest to build a huge municipal hospital on part of the land - offer a beautiful escape from the surrounding suburban sprawl, complete with isolated woodland walks, golf courses, tennis courts, bowling greens, and a children's playground). The park bears deep exploration; contained within its lands are the splendid Arrowe Hall (in its time having served as a private residence, a WW2 hospital, a cafe - and now presently acting as council offices), the remains of a formerly large lake and waterfall (now somewhat diminished), nature meadows and a beguilingly beautiful winding stream. Sadly, most of the old shelters and pavilions are long gone, but it remains a lovely park - particularly in the warmer months - and worthy of a visit. Free admission, with free car parking spaces on nearby Arrowe Brook Rd. read more
